I think a good marathon course would be from the vicinity of Fuquay-Varina to RTP via Hwy 55, also incorporating some of the backroads. I drive this way to work and it comes out pretty close to 26 miles.

Travis, did I read correctly that you are considering Umstead after being sidelined for so long? Wow.

I was able to get out and run and bike this week. Yesterday was a great day to swim. Looks like next week may be really cold, so I may need to do more indoor running and biking. Training is going well, and I feel better. But yesterday my back started acting up again and today it is worse. I'll try my normal remidies and see where that gets me.

Saturday I was able to get four miles in on the Wake ATT then I went to the Gym lifted and ran another two miles on the treed. Felt fine, but on Sunday a felt ragged on the bike ride and with fifteen minutes left on a two hour ride I got dropped. I was expecting to happen throughout the ride. My muscles just felt real tired--I stepped over a magic line. I took Monday off because my leg muscles felt sore. Today was better so I lifted , stretched and swam. I think tomorrow I'll be ready to run and bike.

You know me, I never back down from a good challenge. However, this is a little different. I am not considering doing the Umstead Marathon anymore. I ran several times this past weekend and my foot actually feels really good. The problem is that I am back to square 1 on my training. I have lost about 3 minutes on my 5K time alone and I doubt I could even run more than a half right now. I will try to get them to let me transfer my registration but I don’t think that is likely. I know I could finish the marathon probably on will power alone. Heck I made it through most of the thunder road one on a broken foot and not enough water. However, I think it is unfair for me to take a spot from someone else who is prepared to give their best effort. I know I wouldn’t be able to make a reasonable showing at Umstead. I didn’t post a good time in Charlotte but considering the conditions(22 degrees and what felt like zero humidity) I thought I gave it my best effort. I wouldn’t be able to come anywhere near that effort at Umstead. I will probably stick to some local 5K and 10K events with the stroller. I will get myself ready for Fall 5K/10K and marathon season. By then I should be able to get back in shape. I will let you all know if they let me transfer the registration.

Ran two miles this morning and biked 15 miles for lunch. Run felt great, but the ride was difficult. It was windy, and my muscles were not 100% ready.

Bought a new Polar S120 heart monitor watch to replace my broken S120 watch. I haven't been wearing a watch for a month. I miss not having my runs timed, but I also have not been doing speed work or tempo runs. Tomorrow my plan is to do four 880 sprints with five minute jogs in-between.

Hope everyone is dealing with the cold weather OK. Today was good, but this weekend looks tough.

Thinking about running the loop at Umstead for old times sake this weekend.

Well I am back into! I went for a longer run this morning. It feels so great to get back to running. Bob and BrookTrout I know you guys know this feeling! I only did 8 miles but it was mighty cold so I didn’t want to stay out for too long. I felt great. I brought plenty of water this time. I had 5 eight ounce bottles in my water belt and a 22 ounce water bottle. I drank about 54 ounces during the 8 miles. That is 10 more ounces than I drank in the whole first 22 miles of the Thunder Road marathon. That made all of the difference. I felt great at the end of 8 miles today under almost the same conditions as the marathon(low 20’s with almost no humidity). In the marathon I had already started to fade by mile 8. I ended up finishing the 8 miles in 1:01:58 today. That is a lot better than I thought I would do coming off of a 9 week layoff. Oh well I will probably do another longer run on Sunday. Heck I might even try to get into Umstead on my run. That is a little further than I want to go right now though. It is about 16 miles there and back to the start of Umstead for me. Anyway just let me know when you are planning to run and I will try to meet up with you.

I know you all will think I am crazy but I might actually run the Umstead marathon. They won’t let me transfer the entry so I am considering just going and taking it really easy and trying to finish. The soft ground is really enticing to me because running on the pavement has taken such a toll on me. I know I am taking a big risk because of my lack of training but I feel if you don’t take big risks then the rewards are not as great. Oh well I have a few more weeks of running to do in order to determine if I really can do it or not.

Travis,
Glad you're feeling better--seems like the layoff didn't take much out of you. It would have been better if you'd been injured during this cold snap! It just goes on and on... my wife has been sick for over a week. I've felt like I was getting a sore throat or some kind of tiredness every morning, and feel better as each day goes on. I may not be able to work in a long run this weekend, though, if she's in bed the whole time.

I saw in your profile that you said Run for the Oaks is the fastest 5k in Raleigh. I was planning to do one on 3/3, but I'd like to set a pr, of course, so maybe I'll switch. I'm doing Umstead as a long run--if it's killing me, I'll drop out at 20 miles, but I'll probably just try to run slowly for the whole 26, stopping at water stops.

Travis I would not recommend running Umstead--just not enough time to prepare. You also have a chance of injury if you boost your mileage up too quickly. Still I wish you the best of luck if you do run it.

Good news on the Wake American Tobacco Trail: they have added another mile to the end of the Wake part for a total of over 6.5 miles in Wake and Chatham has nearly finished their trail except for two bridges--so you can run nine miles continuously before you get to the Panther Creek Trestle that is getting near completion. Chatham will have a dual surface trail--six feet of screened granite like Wake and a ten foot paved surface--a compromise to bikers. I am not sure where the dual trail will begin in Chatham. All of Durham's ATT will be a paved surface.

Well I had a great swim on Friday. I was able to finish one of my twenty-five yard sprints in 23 seconds (a record for me) and almost finished 1000 yards of swimming when a cramp hit me in my left calf. I was in the deep section of the pool at I couldn't get it to go away, so I used my arms to pull myself to the side. Still it took almost a minute for it to go away even using my pull toe technique that has always worked in the past. I had some muscle damage and had a limp for the rest of the day. All I can think was slight dehydration combined with overuse.

I have spared myself a little this weekend. Just a slow four miles on the ATT yesterday and a 5k tempo run today--Sunday--instead of my two hour bike ride.

Well my wife talked some sense into to me and I will not attempt Umstead this year. I just have not done enough training. I am however, definitely going to do the run for the Oaks! This course is actually the Autism Ribbon run “Backwards”. I knocked about 40 seconds off of my 5K PR at the Autism run last year with the double. The Oaks course starts up a pretty decent hill but after that it is just a series of mild long uphills and down hills. It finishes up with a ¼ + mile downhill. If you don’t PR here then you are not trying.

How fast is the run for the Oaks?

About this fast!

Mark Andrews (14:23) holds the course mark for the men. Tara Wojcieckowski (16:58) holds the women’s course mark.

Those times are just sick!

JDF, as I mentioned last month, if you're not going to attempt Umstead, I'm interested in taking your spot. Since they won't let you transfer your entry, will you allow someone to run under your assumed name? :-) Allowing, of course, you don't mind seeing a 5+ hour marathon time next to your name on the Internet. :-)

Funny, I always thought the Autism Ribbon Run was the Run for the Oaks course backwards... ;-)

Man I would love to give my spot up. I tried everything I could think of to do it through the proper channels. They just do not allow it. Frankly, I am not willing to let someone run in my place. Sorry I just don't think it is right to have someone run under my name. For example what if you placed in my age group yet you would have finished last in your age group. That is not fair. I hope you understand.

Yes, good one! Anyway you put it, that course is smokin fast. I wish all of the local speedsters would show up and really go for it. I bet someone could break 14. It is that fast! So who is in it to win it? How many people are going for their PR in this race? Maybe this would be a good shot for all of us to finally run together?

Here is the gmaps for the Oaks course. The elevation change looks drastic. However, you have to look at the scale. It only rises about 40 feet in half a mile on the longest hill.

Your best bet is to literally do an all out sprint both times you are on blount street. It is down hill both times. It is amazing how much time you can make up on that stretch.

From Umstead's website, the only individual awards are to the top fifteen male and female finishers -- no age group consideration at all. And I can guarantee I won't be a threat to finish among the award winners anyway. :-) My best marathon time, from last year's Marine Corps, would have placed me 124th in last year's Umstead. Let me know if you change your mind.

Brad, since it is a public park, you could run with the marathoners. You would need to bring your own fluids and food, but other than that you can run the same course.

Ya, I've got a friend coming to run about 15 miles with me. He couldn't get into the marathon, so he'll just wait for me at Graylin and carry his own water.

Well I rode my bike up the Wake ATT and saw the new trail that extends past 5.25 mile area--looks good. When I got to about 6.25 I ran across a sign saying American Tobacco Trail, rough uneven trail ahead and proceed at your own risk. I assumed I was in Chatham county at this point. I went forward and within 1/10 of a mile the trail was a mixture of stones, mud and pine shavings--so I turned around. The whole ride was difficult. The soil was soft and it felt like my bike was riding through sand, and I was pushing myself. When I got back to the car, I stripped down to shorts and short sleev shirt and ran a 5k. I pushed myself to see how I would do after a hard bike ride and I was happy with 28:30. I got pretty exhausted, but felt I needed the training.

I signed up for two sprint triathlons, Riverwood in Clayton April 28th and Sportsplex in the Durham area March 18th. I looking forward to doing these events. Thinking about running the Oaks 5k and Cary 5k also.

We are getting really close to the Umstead race. This weekend should be one of the toughest for training. Hope everyone is doing well.

Hey everyone, take a look at our local hero:
http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum13/HTML/009048.shtml

Ran the loop at Umstead today. Cannot say when I ran that last. I remember running Umstead in May 2006 to check out my PF, but I didn't do the loop. Anyways, great run. Felt good. I really think I'm getting faster. Signed up for Sportsplex triathlon March 18th and Riverwood triathlon April 28th. Looking forward to this new challenge.

Hey, Bob; yep, I know I can just show up and run at Umstead, but it was important to me to do it officially so that I could make use of the support stations and of course earn the official t-shirt. Since JDF was concerned about the integrity of the age groups, I just wanted to point out that Umstead doesn't have age groups and I'm no threat to be in the top 75% of the finishers anyway. Shame to have a spot in a limited local event go unused. :-(

Congrats to all on good weekend workouts and to those who did well at Myrtle Beach! Did that groundhog say when early spring would get here?

I wish the Umstead race authorities would give up the slot. Seems a waste.

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to introduce myself as a newer member of CoolRunning, and a semi-new runner in the area (I've been running for a few months). I was wondering if anyone on here is participating in some shorter races in March, such as the Cary Distance Festival or the Triple S? These will be my first competitive 5ks, and if all goes well, I'll do the Oaks too. Hope to meet some of you eventually!

Captain, good luck with your race. Your first is always the best. I might do the Cary Wake Med race, but have not yet decided.

City of Oaks Marathon registration is now open. $50 for the marathon -- $30 for the half -- through May 2. Limit of 5,000 entries in both races combined. Lots more information on the website.

Im also doing the Cary WakeMed 5K and the Run for the Oaks 5K this month. Im not expecting great times because ive been fairly slack lately because of travel and work but am working back into shape.

I see they run the Raleigh marathon down Umstead's trails Graylon and Reedy Creek Trail. That makes the marathon a bit tougher. I would love to run the Raleigh marathon, but for now I'm forgoing marathons.

Signed up for Run for the Oaks. Still thinking of Cary Wake Med 5k race. I feel my speed increasing. Want to get 24 minutes or better.
