It was indeed a great weekend for running outside; when it hits the low 70s in mid-January, you can't stay indoors. I got a slow jog in Umstead on Saturday morning and a 10k through downtown on Sunday afternoon. My own tie to Knoxville is that I was in school at UT there for four+ years. I want to do the Knox Marathon at some point, but it usually, like this year, conflicts with Cooper River weekend in Charleston. I may skip Cooper next year in order to get the Knox Marathon so my family can come cheer me on. Finishing in Neyland Stadium is a rush, I'm sure. I survived the Goofy run at Disney. The Goofy Challenge is where you sign up to run both the half-marathon on Saturday and the full marathon on Sunday. My plan for the half was to jog slowly and save energy for Sunday's full. Felt great at the end of the half other than a small blister, but Sunday's full turned out to be two separate races: a nice, cool run for about three hours and then a blistering hot death march (80s, high humidity) for the next three. I got through the 15-mile point in good shape, but when the heat arrived I folded like an accordion in full polka. There's a five-mile stretch after Animal Kingdom that's on highway with no shade and nothing to draw your attention until you get to MGM, and it was rough. A friend hours ahead of me saw people go down like they were shot when the heat got to them, but in my slower group we just took walk breaks and soldiered on as best as we could. The last four miles are really nice around the boardwalk areas and EPCOT's lake, but at that point I just wanted to finish. Many of us had wished a PR upon a star, but it made no difference who we are -- the heat made us happy just to be done. Mickey puts on a nice race -- running through the parks was a hoot -- and if I go back next year I'll only focus on one race. :-) Brad Isaiah 40:31

Hey all,Haven't posted in ages. JDF, BT, sorry to hear about your injuries. Bob, glad to hear your running again. As you may recall, I was scheduled to run the OBX marathon. An injury, sick kids that week, and insane work hours caused me to miss running it. Mostly the injury, 10 days out is what did it. Bummer since I'm pretty confident I could've made my 3:30 goal. Oh well. Anyway, after seeing the foot doc it turns out it was an overuse injury. Basically I had a dull pain in my right foot just behind my second toe. If you look at this foot anatomy pic: http://www.nefca.ca/find-ft-nurse/images/foot-prob/ft-anatomy6.gif It was basically a swelling of the joint between the metatarsal and the proximal phalange. So the doc fitted me for orthotics and I ended up taking off from running all of Nov/Dec and the first part of Jan. I'm just starting back up again and taking it easy while I adjust to the orthotics. Not sure what my next race will be. I need to work back up to a 35-40 mpw base before I get into a training plan. (And lose the weight I put on while not running, sigh...) Glad to see all the new runners to this thread. Also, thanks to JDF for creating a new thread. I will point out that I suggested doing this on like page 30-something of the old thread and y'all said no. Guess it finally got slow enough to annoy someone besides me.

Yes you are right. I was the one who wanted to keep it in one thread originally. Sorry about that. It definitely was getting slow because of the number of posts. Yea I have not posted in awhile because I just can't bare to think about running. I have been out of it for so long that I am just itching to get back into it. I know I can't though. The bone has fused back together. I can actually feel that now. I won't go into the gory details. However, it is still pretty messed up. That injury turned out to be a lot worse than I thought. I am not upset that I ran the marathon though. It probably wasn't an overuse injury. It was probably just the fact that I came down on it just in the right way. Since it happened at mile 5 it could have happened on any run. I have a spot in the Umstead marathon that I will probably have to give up. I won't be able to run again to Feb atleast. I will ask if I can transfer the registration. If so then someone on this board can get my spot. I guess I got ready for a marathon in 6 weeks before but I wasn't coming off an injury then. This is actually the first running injury I have ever had and the first broken bone I have ever had. Fine time to get it Huh? Oh well you live and you learn! I will get back into by the time the April race season gets here. I might stick to the shorter races with the double jogger though. Running with the stroller is far less stressfull on your body as weird as that sounds.

Hello, first-time poster here...I am looking for recommendations for a runner-friendly massage therapist in the Triangle who can help loosen my calves... I've had this problem for five months, and it has led to bouts with shin splints and plantar fasciatis, along with several interruptions in my training schedule...Stretching upon stretching has been unable to completely correct the problem... A local ortho even said I had the tightest calves he has ever seen... The amount of web info on Raleigh massage therapists is staggering, so hoping y'all could help me narrow down the search... Thanks in advance and hope everyone reaches his/her goals this season...

Hi Raleigh folks from your neighbor a couple hours to the east in the very, very Dismal Swamp.I'll be in town in a few weekends for a workshop -- has Raleigh got a good not too hilly trail for long runs? Something w/the occasional water fountain and bathroom and mile markers would be ideal. I will probably do a 20+ miler that weekend. Also I am crewing and/or pacing at Umstead and am so looking forward to it!! Thanks! Andrea

JDF, I understand exactly your itching to get back to running again. Every time I have to take some time off for an injury I end up counting the days until I can get back out there again. If you do end up having to punt on Umstead, I would love to take your spot, so keep us posted on your recovery.Jessb, I would recomend George Umberger at the Cary Family YMCA. George is a former triathlete and understands running injuries. I don't know if you have to be a YMCA member to book time with either of their massage therapists. sister, Raleigh has several good running areas. If you want to avoid hills and want mile markers and bathrooms/fountains, try Lake Lynn or Shelly Lake -- although they're only 2 or 3 miles. Lake Johnson (3 miles) has bathrooms/fountains, but also some hills. Umstead may be the best place to do a 20+ miler without having to do a small loop over and over, but there are hills and no mile markers (there are maps w/ mileage online). There is a longer trail at Falls Lake but I don't know much about it. The American Tobacco Trail is another option, and you should also look into Raleigh's greenway system. Just to stir everyone else up, anybody else heard the rumor that RRO may start up an all-new Raleigh Marathon in November?!? I haven't heard any detail beyond that. Brad Isaiah 40:31

"Just to stir everyone else up, anybody else heard the rumor that RRO may start up an all-new Raleigh Marathon in November?!? I haven't heard any detail beyond that." I stopped in at Raleigh Running Outfitters on Saturday, and they had a sign announcing their marathon and half-marathon on November 4th. I asked about a web page, and it's www.cityofoaksmarathon.com but all it has so far is the home page. The guy told me it looks like it's going to be a double-loop course starting somewhere around the fair grounds or the RBC center. The first loop/half-marathon course would go downtown and back, and the second loop would go out towards Umstead and back. I wonder how it's going to affect the Inside-Out half - they can't be more than a couple of weeks apart.

Oh yea! A Raleigh Road marathon! Sounds like fun to me! Think they would let me do that one with the stroller? My son would probably love to do that one. Just kidding! Kind of?Yea I am almost ready to get back into it! I can feel that the bone has fused again. I almost went for a run this morning but I set a date for my return(Feb 1st) and I am sticking to that. My foot still isn’t perfect yet(There is a lot of tingling and numbness). But at least the bone is whole again. Anyway, I am going to try to get back into training and still try to do Umstead. I will just try to finish it at a consistent pace. I might back out of it if the first few runs do not go well. I will definitely give my spot up then. I really want to train with the stroller for the shorter distances in the spring. I know that I can get back into 5k and maybe 10K shape pretty quickly. 2 months off really destroys your training. I will be lucky to break 22 for the 5k now. That is a long way from where I was in early December! Anyway you live and you learn. See you guys at the next race.

JDF--the Umstead website says that entries are non-transferable. However, if they do let you, and misterfun changes his mind, I've got a friend who wants to get in.Misterfun--can you point me to a good Umstead map with mileage online? The one from the marathon website is hard to read and has some omissions. A Raleigh marathon would be great news. Here's hoping they pull it off. ------------------ My Profile My Log

The City of Oaks Marathon has posted a sponsor packet that includes the proposed race map: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=585463This is not going to be an easy marathon, but the half-marathon looks very nice. The race starts at the RBC Center and follows Hillsborough Street to the new Fayetteville Street, then it circles the Capitol and goes out Glenwood South to Peace Street and back towards Cameron Village. (It's like they stole my 7-mile downtown loop! :-) Then it goes by the Rose Garden on Clark Avenue back out to Hillsborough and a return around the fairgrounds to the RBC Center. OK, tighten those shoelaces, cause here's where it gets tough. You go out Trinity Road, up that hill to the intersection with Nowell Road and on out Trinity past the farms and the SAS back-door to the Umstead entrance on Reedy Creek. (Very similar to when the Carabba/Stonewood Classic left the RBC Center on its way to Umstead.) You go on into Umstead, down a gradual downhill, then up Five Curve Hill, to the intersection with Graylyn Trail and up Powerline Hill to the Umstead entrance on Graylyn Road. At least you get to come down a long downhill on Ebenezer Church Road all the way back to Edwards Mill and the RBC Center. That's a tough second-half to the marathon, with some long, long uphills. (I would have suggested incorporating Schenck Forest, and please, please find a way to include the pedestrian bridge over 440.) I can't wait to see a course profile, because those hills in Umstead are not going to be fun in the second half of a marathon. The rest of the sponsor kit (they've taken it off the website now, but I saved a PDF copy) gives some good information as to what they're expecting. They're expecting between 4,000 and 5,000 entries (10,000 spectators and 500 volunteers), and the race will benefit the American Heart Association and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Speaking of spectators, I guess there are plenty of opportunities to watch the runners, but you would have to do some serious driving to get to the good vantage points. They've taken the sponsor kit offline, but the map is there. Thanks for the detailed description. I talked to someone at RRO today; he said that InsideOut is canceling their October HM because of this one. Any word on if this will be a Boston qualifier? I don't know what's involved in becoming one, so I don't know if that's realistic or not. ------------------ My Profile My Log

Jay, good to hear from you. Keep us posted. Hope your healing goes well.Been busy and also have not felt 100% since I got back from China. My training has not been as much as I wanted, but I still push myself to get 30-120 minutes five days a week. Running Wake ATT, Saturday, tomorrow. Want to see if I can do ten, but will gage how I feel and back-off it is too tough. Umstead Marathon Trainers: How has thw colder weather affected your training? I'm wearing more when I run, like gloves and a hat. I've demoted Umstead to a "C" race, since I got started late, and will race Nashville on 4/28. Umstead will be lsd for me. ------------------ My Profile My Log

Bones, good luck with Umstead. It can be alot of fun, but it takes a big bite out of you.Boy was it nice this weekend. I waited until late morning to do my ten miler and was I enjoying the weather! My watch battery died, so I ran to a pace I felt comfortable. I had no problems and the run felt easy. My PF had little to say, so I was happy. Did my 33 mile bike group ride and that was enjoyable in this warm weather. This coming week looks like a bear. I might find myself more at the gym this week. It is nice to swim on a cold day. Hey guys. I just came across this thread when I was trying to find the official results for the Cary Turkey Trot 8K. Thanks for posting that link by the way JDF. I had been looking for it for a while now.Ive been doing running for a little over a year now. I started out really because it was easier to run than to get somewhere I could bike last year while I was trying to get in shape for the Austin Livestrong Challenge (2nd time). Now Ive gotten really into it and will be doing a bunch of races this year. Im glad to hear there will be a marathon in town this year. Ive been looking for one to do in 2007 because now that im cycling and enjoying running I want to go for an Ironman next year and want to do each distance separately to see if its feasible. I should share that the reason I was looking again for the 8K results is I found a site called www.athlinks.com when I was looking for my name in google one day and it tracks all your race results. Turns out they data mine the internet and pull in race results and automatically create records for every athlete. The allow you to submit results you missed and they missed the 8K so I wanted to upload it so it would be in my profile. Thought id share that since im sure there are probably a bunch of people on here who already have records. And im not a troll trying to pimp the site , i just liked it. My first race this year will be the Cary Wakemed Distance Run but am not sure which distance yet. ------------------ Please click here to sponsor me for the 2007 Austin LIVESTRONG Challenge and help the Lance Armstrong Foundation support those affected by cancer and find a cure. Great find! Don’t worry about pimping that site. It looks pretty good to me. It listed most of my races. Good luck in your races. I hope to run the Wakemed Distance festival also. However, my broken foot has kept me sidelined for 2 months now. I definitely am not in shape now.------------------ My Profile

Cool deal. I see from your profile that you did the Raleigh Grand Prix, I ended up placing sixth in my age group. I think the same group as yours, I wont be knocking you off anytime soon with paces like those. That site was missing a lot of those races and I submitted them and got them imported. We're probably in there as rivals on the site a feature which I dig. I got a couple of friends to sign up so we could compare our times. Hopefully your foot will be good to go for the Wakemed race, if there's an upside its that the timing was pretty good in that it happened in the offseason or at least the offseason around here. ------------------ Please click here to sponsor me for the 2007 Austin LIVESTRONG Challenge and help the Lance Armstrong Foundation support those affected by cancer and find a cure. I couldn't get gmap.com to generate an elevation map for the proposed City of Oaks marathon course, so I re-drew it in mapmyrun and generated an annotated elevation map:http://www.bradzone.com/CityOfOaksElevation.jpg The second half is definitely up-and-down, but I hadn't realized the first half had as much elevation change as it does. JDF, have you made a decision whether to stay in the Umstead Marathon next month? Hope everybody's enjoying running in the snow! :-) Brad Isaiah 40:31

Cool map. Personally I hate those cause they remind me just how hard its going to be. Everything just looks way more drastic when put on a chart. I love them after the fact though.I wish I had done the Friesen 5K at the RBC last year to get a sense of at least some of the hills. I know it covered some of them. ------------------ Please click here to sponsor me for the 2007 Austin LIVESTRONG Challenge and help the Lance Armstrong Foundation support those affected by cancer and find a cure. Yes I was able to finish everyone of the Grand Prix races with the stroller(3 of them with the double). I am afraid that I will be way off the pace now. I was training pretty hard back then. My foot has kept me sidelined for too long now. I might try to run in the morning if I don't have to get up too many times with my daughter tonight. She still is not sleeping through the night. My wife has picked up running since I have stopped. Jeez that might be weird if I struggle to keep up with her. Oh well I will get back into soon enough. As crazy as it sounds I might still try to do umstead. Not sure yet though. I will know by the end of the weekend. See you at the races! Maybe my son will be able to push me in the stroller this time. He is 3 but he can easily run the mile now! ------------------ My Profile
