rlemert, congrats on your Turkey Trot. I was in the same race. It felt good to get the racing shoes on again. Finsihed 40:12 right in the middle of my age group. I didn't have a chip, they ran out, but they marked down my time when I finsihed and entered me in the results.

Bitbit, Congrats on your win!

Happy holidays runners.

Went down to the middle of nowhere for the Derby 50K this weekend. Not a Turkey Trot but the course goes by a couple of poultry farms. Not sure if they are turkeys or chickens in there. Just stinks is all I know. Anyway, I ran another PR in 4:48:58 and was first over age 50 for the second year in a row. Too bad they don't give age-group awards. No more racing this year for me. Time to rest.

I probably should consider myself fortunate that I was able to even stay within sight of her.

Yea rlemert my wife was definitely giving you a run for your money. The double stroller actually weighs more than she does! You had a really good kick though so I think you edged her out at the line. I have a video of it. I will post it when I get the chance.

I on the other hand had a pretty disappointing race. Something wasn’t right for me that day. I am not sure if it was the heat or something I had eaten the night before. I was throwing up by mile 4! Anyway I finished but way behind my competition in the second empire series and that was without the stroller. I will have to have a ridiculous 5K this weekend to still place in my age group. At least the 5k is on a course I know and love. Hopefully, I can run it with the kids if it doesn’t rain!

On another note I have been doing my marathon training lately. I was able to get in 23 miles yesterday. Here is the report from my garmin. The course was VERY hilly. However, I held my pace fairly well and I was still in pretty good shape when I finished. Hopefully that means I will be ready for the Charlotte Thunder Road Marathon on December 8th. Wish me luck.

Check out the hills at mile 8-9, 11-13, and one from 17 to 17.1 really hurt. See you guys at the races!

Yeah, I'm looking forward to that course too. The races that usually go out there (i.e. the 2nd Empire 5k) put that long uphill stretch on out-bound Hillsborough in the second mile, and that's usually where I lose my pace - too far from the start for the legs/lungs to still be fresh, too far from the end to put on my finishing kick. Saturday's race will put that second mile on the down-hill in-bound segment, and I'm hoping that will help keep my pace up.

BTW - I noticed they didn't have your wife's name in the Turkey Trot results, so I sent Jim Young an email telling him she was missing. I told him if you went by the stroller then I thought she beat me, but if you went by the runner then I thought I beat her. He said he'll have her in the revised results posted later this week.

It was a photo finish so I will have to review the tape to see who finished first. Good race by the way. You are running really well right now. Keep it up.

I thought I memorized the URL that was on the flyer to find out more about it and see if they had identified a course, but the URL I memorized doesn't mention anything about it or have it on their '08 schedule. Anybody else see the flyer or remember what it was promoting? Curiosity has the best of me. :-)

I probably won't get to do the Jingle Bell 5k because of our Christmas musical at church, but I plan to do either the Reindeer Romp 5k or the Rocky Mount half depending on how cold it is on the 8th. Hope to see y'all at a race before the end of the year!

Thanks,

If so, it is fancy seeing you here! By reading, it looks like you have had a good year since running the Outer Banks in '06. That is great. I haven't been running as much as I would have liked, but I did win one 4 mile race here (thanks to a lack of competition).

I have signed up for the Umstead Marathon in March and can't wait, mainly because that means I am home. I will only have a week or so at home before the race so I hope to get out there for a little course familiarization. The running is going good here, but not a lot for hills.

rlemert, Joey, Chris and mythreeduaghters: Thanks for the Umstead course help! Hope to meet many of you in the future!

Brad, we share the same fav Bible verse, too! I have a great story about that! Will have to tell you some time.

I have had a great running year in 2007, but I'm at Providence, not Good Hope. :-) (Look for me in the Christmas concert!) Haven't done OBX yet, either; maybe in '08. And it *is* a great verse! :-) Also, Paul uses some great allusions to running in his letters, as examples of staying with his ministry and fighting through obstacles.

I did get into Umstead Trail Marathon 2008, too. That race filled up all its slots in eight days! That's a pretty good showing by the Triangle running community.

Running in such a way as to win the prize,
Brad

Brad, Best wishes at your Christmas Concert. My wife is in ours at Good Hope.

That is great about Umstead filling up that fast! I was tenative about signing up, not knowing if I would be fully ready and only being home for a short time prior to. Still surprised my wife allowed me to sign up after being gone for 15 months! We will see how supportive she is when I can't walk afterwards!!

I hope to have a decent year in 2008 missing this year for an extended stay in the big "sandbox"! I can't wait to get home and back to a semi-normal life (runners are not normal; we are a little out there) I am considering moving up to the ultra distances, any suggestions in NC? I don't think I can jump into the Umstead 100, but 50 miles seems possible.

Hope to see many of you after the New Year!

The route we are doing is 11 miles. We trimmed the couse two miles for the training run. We hope to have between 10-20 runners, and always welcome more.

Here is information about our run including the map (see the Run RSVP post): http://rockymounttrainingteam.blogspot.com/

You can find information about the actual race on 12/08, at ncraces.com

Here is a link to my report on last years Umstead Trail Marathon. There is a link to some photos I took along the course too so you can see what some of it is like.

http://runjoey.blogspot.com/2007/03/umstead-trail-marathon-2007.html

As far as considering ultra's, it's too late for Umstead this year. It filled in 3 days. There is a calender of ultra's at www.ncultra.org

We have a good mix of trail, road and mixed and there are plenty more in close driving distance in VA. www.vhtrc.org and www.extremeultrarunning.com

Joey, thanks for the help!

I hope to do a couple marathons next year and maybe a 50 miler. Umstead is scheduled to be my first marathon of the year. Do they post the list of entrants before race day? I signed up on NOV 19 and Active took my money, but I am a little nervous that I didn't get anything from the race.

Does anyone know?

The Umstead website will have an entrants list at some point. It just hasn't been updated since 2007. Just check periodically but I imagine they'll update around the first of the year. I was lucky to get in. I had decided not to run it and try for a Boston Qualifier at Shamrock a week later. Then I came to my senses and realized trying for a fast road marathon made know sense with my 100 miler three weeks later.

I'm glad marathon training is coming along for you. I know how hilly Umstead is, but just FYI, you should take the altitude readings from the Garmin with a grain of salt. Check out their FAQ about it:

http://wiki.motionbased.com/mb/MB_Gravity_Web_Service
http://clarque.typepad.com/mblog/2005/05/mb_gravity_elev.html

I had a PR in my Turkey Trot. 5 miles in 34.51 on a very flat course -- I went out way too fast and died on mile 4, but managed to pick it back up for the last mile.

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/4496463

I'm strongly considering the Miami Marathon as my next race, not sure if I want to do the full or the half though. If I don't make that, maybe the Shamrock or the Bi-Lo.

Has anyone here run either the Shamrock or the Bi-Lo? Any recommendations between those two?

j.

I've run both at Bi-Lo M.B. (3 times) and Shamrock once. Both are very good races and have fast courses. There weather is usually perfect for a good run too. MB is a destination event for a lot of the NCRC and Galloway folks from Raleigh area. We had over a hundred at the party last year. There was a bit of a problem with a couple of the mile markers being off but otherwise a great race.
Shamrock has a few minor hills in the middle miles in Fort Story but not too bad and still a fast course. They have modified the course a bit since I was there in 05.

I'll be back at MB this year. Had considered Shamrock but it's too close to Umstead.

Jay,

Awesome job on the PR. We need to run again sometime. You have been posting some impressive times.

Yea I have read up on the elevation stuff. It looks like the MB elevation correction has been working out well for me. It seems to be much more accurate than the GPS device alone. I apply it to all of my profiles.

Check out my Jingle Bell profile and my 12 mile run in Umstead yesterday. Man Umstead is HILLY!

Jay,

That course wasn';t just "Flat"! It was down right glassy! I think my driveway is hillier than that. +79 Feet -79 feet over 5 miles is crazy. Wish we could find a course like that around here.

Great job though. You ran a very smart race and posted a really good time.

Man! You guys are making me nervous about running the Umstead Marathon! There aren't a lot of hills where I am at overseas to train on. I ran the DC marathon in '06 and the hills in the second half kicked my butt! Hopefully I will have a couple of weeks to run at Umstead park prior to the marathon. That would really help with the nerves on race day!

Jay, great job on the PR! That's about my 4 mile time!

Here is my race and training report from this weekend. The Charlotte marathon is looking to have mid 40's temps and clear skies. That is a lot better than the 22 degrees at the start last year.

Anyone else running the half-marathon in Rocky Mount this weekend? I'm hoping to be able to make it out but I messed up my ankle in soccer yesterday. I'm hoping it'll shape up by the weekend, its already to the point that I can make it up and down stairs reasonably well. A pretty quick turnaround from waking up last night because of it, so we'll see.

I was passed by a stroller JDF on the Jingle Bell run and thought perhaps it was you but from your description and race report I was never close enough, it must've been someone else. Good luck in Charlotte, I decided one marathon was enough for me this year.

We are over 500 total runners for the race, and the weather forecast has us expecting another 100+ will sign up by race day. Hope the ankle gets better. We would love to have you join us.

If anyone is still trying to decide, the forecast is low 40s for the race start and 67 for the high. We will have music, food, drinks, race medals for the half, some very cool long sleeve shirts, a great course, fun stuff for the kids, and more.

Today is the last day to register online. www.ncraces.com

My ankle feels better so I'm going to try to knock out the Half. Does anyone know the headphone policy? I looked through the site but couldn't find anything saying they weren't allowed. Given the choice I'd definitely like to wear mine if possible. Anyone know? Hokie?

Nevermind, i found it. No headphones....bah.
