I owe my kids a fun run -- I promised them the fun run at the Anna's Angels but little did I know that fun run was scheduled to occur while the 10 milers were still out on the course (grrrr).

Anyway, whether or not I run the 10K, I'd like to do the 1 mile run with my kids.

Travis, Are you planning on doing the 10K or the 5K?

HokieNC - that half-marathon looks intriguing.

runwrath66 - congrats! For future reference, you might consider an ice bath after a race. I soaked myself in one for 15 minutes after the marathon and I have very little soreness.

j.

Jay,

I will be doing the 10K with my Daughter. I hope to break 40:00 for that race. You still have your Garmin right? It shouldn't matter what splits they call if you have that, right? I got my 205 today. That thing rocks!

Alert!

The Inside Out Sports 8K Turkey trot has an entirley new course. I don't believe it is certified yet. It is advertised to be flat and fast. I will run it with my new garmin 205 and let you guys know if that is true.

Gee, are some of us questioning your veracity after the Free to Breath 5K? <g>

(Speaking of which, I got my most Grand Prix points ever despite running a minute off my PR. Seems like everyone - including the winner - was running slower last Sat.)

Yea I was struggling at the FTB race. I just could not overcome the wind that day. In the parts where I usually make up time I was actually loosing time. Oh well, that is what makes running with the stroller so tough. You are totally at the mercy of the elements.

This Sunday’s Old Reliable should be good though. Little to no wind and nice temps. I will definitely be looking for a PR there!

I got a new Garmin 205 GPS tracking watch online for $165. This thing is unreal! You don’t even have to mark your splits at all. It automatically marks your splits for you. Check out the info from our training run at RRO and around Shelley Lake last night.

Congratulations on winning the Ridge to Bridge for the second year in a row! I couldn't get up there to volunteer like I had wanted to, but I think I may run that one again next year - perhaps in the relay (and the bottom half, thank you).
Glad to hear it was a fun race, again - though much bigger from the looks of things.

Thanks, Brook Trout!
You are right; I think there were 40 people last year and 109 this year! I hope you can make it back next year!

It's such a fun little race!

Great Job Bit. You are just amazing!

Well I tried but I just didn’t quite have enough today. My official time was 40:13 for the 10K with my daughter in the single stroller. You can read my race report below. I actually wasn’t that disappointed in not getting the sub 40:00 because I won the very competitive stroller division by 30 seconds over the guy who beat me last year by 6 seconds.

What a great weekend. The Rocky Mount Endurance Club (RMEC) took 18 people to the Richmond Marathon. 14 ran the full, two ran the 8k, and two were on-the-course coaches (myself included). Out of 14 marathoners we set 11 PRs! Richmond puts on a great race weekend, and this year was no exception.

Our little crowd in Rocky Mount is hoping some of the Raleigh group will join us for one of our two upcoming races.

11/17 Turkey Trot:
http://www.rockymountnc.gov/parks/athletics.html

This is your standard Turkey Trot. We have a 10k, 3 mile, and 1 mile race. It is a small town race, but a great chance to get some hardware. From the link above you will see more links to the entry forms, and course maps. Last year this race gave out heavy weight long sleeve cotton shirts, and plenty of age group awards.

12/08 First Carolina State Bank Half Marathon:
http://ncraces.com/FCSB_Half_Marathon.php

I have posted before on the race. It is directed by Butch Robertson, and is the first race in the new NC Half Marathon series. The price increase for this race is tomorrow. The course is a beautiful course. Butch just put the map up on his site (http://ncraces.com/images/FCSB-Half-Marathon-Map.gif). We really hope to see this race succeed. It also has a 5k and two kid races. Please come join us, and help spread the word! We are having a mini running boom in Rocky Mount right now, and hope to see the energy continue. That is why I am some passionate about the Half Marathon succeeding.

Thanks!

11/15 Update: This event now has over 300 people entered in all races!

Anybody going to the Turkey Trot in Apex this weekend?

Small article in the Rocky Mount Telegram about the race mentioned above by Hokie dude.

http://www.rockymounttelegram.com/news/content/news/stories/2007/11/16/marathon.html

All runners in the Raleigh area should really consider participating in this event. The course along the river is just great. Also, we have a great core group of runners here in Rocky Mount and the success of this event will help us to grow. Please come run and help us out!

Uh, yea it is! I would give my right leg to run a sub 3:20! Just kidding, I think?

My wife talked me into doing the Apex Turkey trot tomorrow. I think I will run it with the double jogger since my wife wanted to try for a PR. I used to train on that course so I guess I can’t slack off on tomorrow!

Did you sign up for the race already? There is no race day registration, right? I signed up at Raleigh Running Outfitters yesterday. Come say Hi to me if you are running in it.

You don’t happen to know anyone from the Cruze family in Strawberry Plains Tennessee do you? I am originally from Knoxville and I saw you used to run there.

Does anyone in this forum use www.bigfootrunning.com?

I find this to be a great race calendar. Not much out there as far as race reviews, but they do a good job of keeping it updated, and include results.

Are their other reliable sources for North Carolina?

Yea I use bigfootrunning as a race calendar. I prefer the active.com site for results though.

I heard that the guy running bigfootrunning was trying to compile everyone's results in order to eventually do a 20 race Series like the second empire one. That would be pretty cool.

Big Congrats goes to Greenhouse! A 2:58:15 Marry is quite impressive! Keep it going man, you are smoking it!

Also nice to finally meet you BitBit. Good race. That was a fun event.

By show of hands, how many people are doing the Cary Turkey Trot on Thursday? Raleigh Turkey Trot? Here is the motionbased info for the Cary one. We did the course twice today as part of an 18.25 mile long run.

The one on Ridge Road used to be part of the Grand Prix series, so I ran it two years ago (while still fairly inexperienced - I went out way too fast). I remember the part on Ridge Road being a steady uphill going out, and therefore a nice downhill for the finish. However, it's a gradual slope so nothing too taxing. The loop through the neighborhood off of Ridge Road had a little more up-and-down, but I don't remember anything too bad.

The one in Cary (that used to be the one on Ridge Road) is using a new course this year, so last year's impressions don't count. JDF has posted a couple of course profiles above, if that helps.

Thanks JDF! Yeah, somehow the planets did align for me at Richmond, and I was sure grateful for that. Kept checking my watch on all the mile splits after 20 to see if/when the wheels might fall off (like they normally do for me), but this time it didn't happen. First time I've been able to keep my splits this even (especially in the marathon).

I found Richmond to be a great course, with great crowds and well-organized. Weather was really good, though some noticeable wind especially on the 2nd half of the race.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, have fun at the those Turkey Trots and afterwards!

Actually the Raleigh Turkey Trot is downhill from the Shopping Center and then back up hill to finish. It is not steep but gradual and long. They changed the course in the middle miles that took out a hill but there ares still a couple of hills in the neighborhoods. Not a particularly fast course but it is very easy to go out too fast.

Paul was awesome at Richmond.

Hi BitBit. Wish I could have been in Apex again and got another plastic turkey to go with last years.

Just got in from running the Cary Inside-Out Sports Turkey Trot - except in my case we're having ham today. I've posted my full race report in the Boomers and Beyond forum (running in an Escher painting). I know it wasn't uphill all the way because I distinctly remember a couple of good downhill segments, but there were times I was wondering. It was a more-entertaining course than last year's, but I haven't decided if it was any better. (At least there were no car crashes like last year, although there was a lot of traffic trying to get through different parts of the course.) Some things also felt like they were done very well (post-race food, for example), but other things seemed to be totally disorganized (running out of chips, the afore-mentioned traffic problems).

JDF - I actually found it a bit disconcerting trying to outrace your wife to the finish. Here I am a grown man, picking on a poor young lady who's been pushing a double-stroller for five miles. She just wouldn't let me pass her! Of course I'm dieing out there and she isn't even breathing hard - she's even talking to the kids. I probably should consider myself fortunate that I was able to even stay within sight of her.

Hey, folks! Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and got some Turkey Day miles in one way or another!

After the Old Reliable Run, they were handing out flyers about some 10k that was being promoted for Raleigh next April, but with a limited-size field. I thought I memorized the URL that was on the flyer to find out more about it and see if they had identified a course, but the URL I memorized doesn't mention anything about it or have it on their '08 schedule. Anybody else see the flyer or remember what it was promoting? Curiosity has the best of me. :-)

I probably won't get to do the Jingle Bell 5k because of our Christmas musical at church, but I plan to do either the Reindeer Romp 5k or the Rocky Mount half depending on how cold it is on the 8th. Hope to see y'all at a race before the end of the year!

Thanks,
Brad
