Rlemert:

Great job! You are coming on strong! I saw you out there but I didn't get the chance to stop and talk with you.

Keep up the good work. A little more speed work and we will have you back to 5:00 mile shape in no time!

I was able to finally meet my goal of sub 6 minute mile average today. You can read about it on my race report below.

Great job to everyone out there today. That was one fast race!

That last uphill segment just before the last block was what killed me, I think. I could feel myself slowing down until I got over the top and back into the downhill segment. Still, it's a lot better than I expect to do on next weekend's course.

I'm finally getting my times down to where they're respectable within my AG in the Grand Prix series (50-54). The only reason I've finished as I as I have in the Grand Prix standings for the last two years is because I was the last person who completed at least four of the five races. This year I'm actually beating someone. I was still a minute behind Stig Olson, who I think keeps finishing ahead of me in the standings, but at least he's in sight now so I can start making him my target - once I figure out who he is at the races. (If you're reading this, Stig, it's just a little competitive fun.)

My full race report is in the Boomers and Beyond forum ("A measly four seconds 5k RR").

Anyone know how the Conquistadore did. I saw him before the race and watched for awhile to see him finish, but I either missed him or left before he was done. I wouldn't have wanted to be wearing that outfit last weekend!

The reports from the Autism Ribbon Run 5K are very encouraging. It seems conditions were perfect for PRs. Congratulations to all who ran well today! (rlemert, JDF, woo hoo!)

I ran 25:16 chip time 25:24 gun time today; that's a new PR for me too! My old PR was 26:04. This is the first time I've worn a watch (and looked at it) during a race. I checked my 1 mile time (approx 8 min), and realized that if I held my pace I could PR. I switched to cruise control until the last downhill before the finish line. A kid who was running near me took off sprinting. Clearly he wanted to play, so I went right with him. We crossed the finish line at about the same time. What a blast that was! The finish was a little tricky because folks weren't running very quickly as they were crossing the finish line. At least I said, "excuse me" as I squeezed between 2 folks jogging across the line:-)

Today's run was particularly gratifying because on the day before the 2nd Empire 5K, I caught a terrible head cold. I felt well enough to toe the line, but my arms and legs felt like they were made out of lead! I was very disappointed in my performance (or lack thereof) that day. This run makes up for it. Now on to the 24:XX!
Cheers!

Here is the Gmaps profile for the St. Augs race on Sunday. This is the 4th race in the 2nd empire series. It is an extremely difficult course because of the very long hill on the backside.

I saw the ATT ten miler Saturday when I was running up the trail. I wish I could have run it. My running has fallen off. I have a strain either in my aductor, inner thigh muscle, or a sciatic nerve problem. Either way, I have reduced my running. I raced the Pinehurst internation distance triathlon two weeks ago. I met my goal to break three hours. Running was my weak point due to my injury, but I felt I put everything I had into the race. I was sooo tired at the end.

Second Empire Grand Prix standings through four races have just been/are being posted (as of 9:30 am Sat.). I guess they're still posting the men's standings, but the women's list, the alphabetical list, and the age group lists all look to be updated.

Good luck to anyone running the Raleigh half or marathon this weekend! I'm not running, but I hope to be out there cheering/spectating on Sunday morning.

Look for me at the finish-line food area. I'm volunteering for this (along with my son, who's earning some scouting community service hours), and that's where I've been told I'll be working. Look for the guy with glasses and a mustache bossing an early teen around.

If my brain is still functional after 26.2, I'll try.

Hey, bit! Congrats on the Ridge2Bridge! That's one I would like to knock out sometime; I'd love to get your input on it. We'll take all the encouragement we can get on Sunday; thanks for coming out and providing support! I'll be wearing my NCRC singlet over my usual Tennessee marathon shirt. :-)

Thanks Brad!
R2B is a great little race! I really only have good things to say about the RD, the volunteers, the organisation, etc. The race is deceptively hard, because of what the downhill can do to your legs and because pacing can be a real challenge. But I think it's a fun course!

I'll look for you on Sunday! (Helps that I know what you look like now!) Good luck.

Weather was perfect. Course was challenging, but not as bad as I expected. I knew I had 3:40 in the bag by mile 20. So I started setting new goals: don't let anyone pass me from here to the finish. Check. Don't walk any of the hills (almost a check -- I took at 10 second walk on a tiny hill on the last mile). Don't give up any of my time (almost...). Here's the splits from my garmin -- it read 26.44 miles for the course, so these are off a little:

It was impossible to not go out fast. For one thing, that first 6 miles is a nice gradual down hill. For another, you're running the first half of the race with the half-marathon runners. I figured I'd give all that time back, but I just kept cranking out the miles. The only time I felt like lying down on the side of the road and going to sleep was the last mile. I had to really dig for that. The mile 23 hill was tough too.

BTW - the race was well run. Volunteers were great. The folks who were out cheer made a lot of noise. I hope this race grows so it can get more course support from the locals, but I don't want it to get too big. It was a nice sized race.

I'll try to write up a proper race report if I think of anything interesting after my brain recovers.

Congratulations, Jay. From my vantage point at the post-race food I was able to eavesdrop on a lot of post-race conversations, and the overwhelming majority of the comments I heard were along the lines of "that was a tough course!" Beating your target like that suggest some serious training.

If your interested, I've posted my 'volunteer' race report in the Boomers and Beyond forum. We probably didn't cross-paths at the post-race food, though. About the time you finished, I was still trying to get caught up with all the trash that had accumulated in the area. You may have seen my digging into the trash barrels with my bare hands - that's how far I went to support your efforts today, and I had a blast doing it.

Thank you so much for volunteering. The volunteers, all of them, were awesome. I'd really like to thank each one personally (and I thanked as many as I could), as well as the committee that organized the race.

I know it's you guys that make the race, so thank you again.

I totally forgot to even look for anyone at the end of the race besides my wife and kids. I plead glycogen depletion!

BTW, free pizza and beer -- whoever thought of that is a friggen genius! (Some folks were walking away from the Papa Johns' truck with whole pizza's --- it was pretty amusing.)

You have no need to apologize for not looking me up. After doing what you've done, you've earned a little slack.

Now if it had been your wife and kids you forgot about, you might have found yourself in a little hot water <g>.

Great job Jay!
I'm so glad you had a good race!
I stood near the finish cheering, yelling, and clapping for about four hours. It was great seeing all the runners come in, and especially cool to see the fast people come in. Seems like the race was a success. : )

Travis - I'm sorry to hear you didn't make the half yesterday. I hope you feel better. I searched the results and I think your wife ran? Was she happy with her time?

As far as Charlotte goes, there is no way I can get from 3:36 (8:15 miles) to 3:15:59 (7:28 miles) between now and December, though I appreciate the encouragement! I'm considering running Miami. I ran it a couple years ago and it's a nice flat course, as long as the weather isn't too warm.

Jay, honestly man I really think you could get close to that BQ. Anyway, great job on Sunday. Take a rest and feel proud about your great accomplishment.

I feel better and I am planning to Annihilate the Old Reliable 10K on Sunday. I lost a lot by not training at all last week. However, I plan to make up for it this week. If you recover in time for this weekend you should come out and do the old reliable 10K. It is a really fun event.

I wanted to post a reminder of the First Carolina State Bank Half Marathon for everyone. The race is just a month a way in Rocky Mount, NC (50 minutes from Raleigh).

It is a low cost race, on a PR friendly course. Despite the name Rocky Mount does not have hills. The entry fee is only $35 before 11/15, and includes a medal and a shirt. It is $45 after the 15th. Take advanage of your marathon training a get in another half before 2008!

The course is great. The first half is in quite neighborhoods, and the second half is on the city green ways. You run over a few bridges and beside the Tar River for much of the race.

http://ncraces.com/Tar_River_Race.php

Hope to see lots of Raleigh Runners in my hometown for the race!

On November 4th at the ridiculous hour of 6am, my husband, a good friend, and I traveled to the State Fair grounds for the inaugural City of Oaks Marathon and Rex Health Care Half Marathon. I ran the half marathon. The weather was beautiful, a little chilly, but the running warmed me up pretty quickly!

I am terrible at splits. Here is what I have:
Mile 3 - time 29:13 - not breathing heavy, smiling and waving at cops, and volunteers in Viking helmets - I think to myself...maybe I should speed up a little.
Mile 6 - 54:26 - feeling good, waving to my friends....maybe I should slow down a little...nah!
Mile 7 - I am rolling. I feel like I am getting faster and faster, not sure. (waving at people - not looking at watch:-(
Mile 10? - Knee pain, not too bad...at least it did not happen at mile 8. As I approached Dorton arena, my watch said 1:26. Even if I completely blow-up, I still have a PR. Knee pain getting worse...slowing down.
Mile 11 - The pain radiated up, my right thigh to my hip, 30 step walk break. My friend Rachel passes me.
Mile 11.5 - Caught up with Rachel, but I could not stay with her. She looks strong and comfortable. She passes me again, this time for good. I am limping at this point. I discover that uphill running does not hurt, so I surge up that last long hill. Downhill sucks, walk 30 steps, speed limping ....more 30 step walk breaks.
Last 200 meters: A runner surges, I go with her because I can't help it. I discover that sprinting is less painful than that limping shuffle of the past couple of miles. I really wish I discovered that 2 miles ago. GRRRRR! I finish a step behind the girl I was racing.
Time: 2 hours 8 minutes *PR* (I am pleased, but not happy with my run.) My husband and friends are there to greet me at the finish line. I am so happy they came out! Hugs, kisses, etc.

The medals are nice. The race organization was better than most of the races I've run. The crowd support was wonderful! Much love to all who came out to cheer! It really made me feel special. I can't thank you enough!

The only complaints I am aware of are from the flea market vendors and customers who couldn't get to the fair grounds because of the traffic. Today (Tuesday) both thighs (all muscles therein) hurt like hell. I am just now noticing the wicked blisters on my toes. My right knee keeps doing uncomfortable things. I am applying ice, Advil, bourbon as needed.

I'll probably be at the Old Reliable. I love that race. I'll run the 10K, probably go for a PR but I think I'll hold back from 100% effort if I can. I sure hope they get the splits right this year ... I seem to recall some confusion last year w/volunteers not showing up or some such.

I owe my kids a fun run -- I promised them the fun run at the Anna's Angels but little did I know that fun run was scheduled to occur while the 10 milers were still out on the course (grrrr).

Anyway, whether or not I run the 10K, I'd like to do the 1 mile run with my kids.

Travis, Are you planning on doing the 10K or the 5K?

HokieNC - that half-marathon looks intriguing.

runwrath66 - congrats! For future reference, you might consider an ice bath after a race. I soaked myself in one for 15 minutes after the marathon and I have very little soreness.

UPDATE LINK FOR THE RACE BROCHURE:
http://ncraces.com/media/NCSB_Half_Marathon_Race.pdf

I really think this will be a great race. In fact I made most of the course. It will be something different from the ordinary race. I run the greenways daily, and never get tired of them.

The race director is Butch Robertson (who also does the Old Reliable). As with any first year event it may have a few kinks, but you can count on a certified and well marked course, great traffic control, and a friendly atmoshphere.

Because we start in a park it is a great event for the family, complete with a 5k, 1 mile fun run, and a 100 yard kids dash.

Hope to see you in "Rock Vegas" (aka Rocky Mount)
