Does bitbit post here anymore? I ran into her and her friend out at Umstead a week or two ago while riding with my son. She's looking fit and is running the RTB marathon in Morganton (she won, last year - that's the race where I got injured, btw).

I have not seen her around these parts lately. Did she ever look not fit?

Bit if you are out there let us know how you are doing!

I think I'm going to run the Virginia Creeper marathon in the spring. Someone else here was going to run it last year (jaysoffian?).

BT - glad to hear you're running again.

I had registered for the '07 VA Creeper this past spring. I ended up not running it, though I can't recall why. I think I hadn't recovered from my foot injury I got training for the OBX, but I'm not sure.

As of right now, I plan to do the City of Oaks. My running is as strong as it has ever been. I'd like to do a spring marathon as well and I'm thinking about the ING Miami or Georgia marathons, but the VA Creeper is a possibility.

Jay,

You are an animal! You posted some pretty good Marathon times last year as I recall. I can't imagine what you are capable of this year. When I ran with you in Umstead you were running pretty strong. Are you going to do the Anna's Angels 10 miler on Sunday? You did it last year right?

We need to do another Umstead run again. This time I won't run to the park first so I can keep up with you. Hope to see you at the races soon. Keep up the good work!

Hey guys!

I am around, but I haven't posted here in a long time! Joel, it was good to see you again! I am glad you are considering another marathon.

What's going on with me:
I hurt my hamstring this summer and had to cut way back on mileage. It seems to be better (for the most part) and I think the lower mileage has been good for me. We'll see how Ridge2Bridge goes in a few weeks!

I did run a few races while recovering. A 10K in 44:24, a half in 1:37, and a couple relays, which were a lot of fun.
And I ran a couple of the August series runs. (saw Brad there too.)

JDF: Congrats on all the racing! You have posted some great times.

I still think some of us should try to meet up for a run sometime!

Here is the Anna’s Angels 5k incase anyone wants to run that. It is probably the flattest course in the entire area. The second mile is insanely fast!

Cool - this is like a reunion. Nice to hear from bit and jaysoffian! Good luck with your upcoming races.

I'm still a ways away from racing. I put on a lot of weight over the winter, with my injury, but I'm having fun just running lots of slow miles for now.

Here's my son finishing the 2nd Empire:

Yes and yes. Hope to see you there tomorrow. I posted a 1:13 last year. I'm going to try to better that a little bit, but that was a good time, so who knows if I'll match it. Weather was great last year. Tomorrow will be a tad warmer, so we'll see.

Thanks for the encouragement. I did my 17 on yesterday (Fri) evening at Umstead so I'd have this weekend available for the 10m. It was drizzling most of it, but I pretty much had the park to myself. It was a great time to run. I was finishing just as the sun was going down, and saw 4 or 5 deer at the end of the run. I love that. (Turkey Creek humbled me again though -- man that trail is tough.)

I'm definitely up for a group run, but I'm too lazy to organize it! Next Sunday I've got a 20 I'll be doing if you want to join me for that (or any part of it). I'll probably take the same route I did for my last 20:

20 Mile Route

The weekend after that I've got the ATT 10m on Sat, and then on Sunday I've got 16 as I'll be starting my taper for the City of Oaks.

I might be up for 10 miler in Umstead on Fri Oct 12th in the evening also.

Let me know if any of those work for you.

Amen to that! I was +2 and some change also. I had a great first 5 miles and an aweful last 5 miles. That was the first race in my life where I almost quit. If it wasn’t for my son cheering for me at the finish line I was going to walk up that last hill.

The sun was just sooo intense yesterday. I was staying hydrated(I drank an incredible 80 ounces in 10 miles!). However, I started to overheat once the sun really came out. I had a 6:16 mile and an 8:16 mile. That is how much the heat affected me.

A good friend of mine won the masters division with a pretty sick time of under 1:05. He managed to beat some pretty impressive competition also. Way to go Tim!

JDF - you're running great man - keep it up!

Was impressed by your 2nd Empire effort, that's a great time, especially with the stroller.

Enjoyed running the 1 mile with the kids also. They seemed to really enjoy it. [ Thanks for posting the photos... I think I
need to work on my form a bit. ]

I'm not going to be able to do all the Series races this year as I am still planning on Richmond next month. I'm going to try to do as many as I can though, and will look forward to seeing you at those! Keep up the good work.

GreeneHouse,

Good job to you also! You have really been running strong lately. Are you going for any set time at Richmond? BQ?

I can’t believe how competitive the masters division has become lately. There have been some pretty sick times from some 40+ guys. Keep up the good work and let us know how Richmond goes.

Great finishes, but boy, what a goat rodeo it was for the rest of us. I'm sure it's a great event, but this year I think they were overwhelmed by the size (45,000 for the first time) and the heat and humidity (88+ degrees and 70+% humidity, depending on where you measured). It was so packed at the start that we were already drenched before we even started. I saw water at every aid station, but Gatorade was hit-or-miss, and sometimes there were missing cups or overmatched volunteers trying to pour fluids as fast as runners arrived. It was an easy day to realize that the weather wasn't going to cooperate for a PR, so it was time to just jog along and see the sights and enjoy the experience and look forward to the finish. I was very surprised that my halfway split was only three minutes off my PR pace, but I knew the second half would be slower.

Just before the seventeen mile mark they started announcing that the race was being canceled because of the extreme heat (I didn't know at that point of the number of medical emergencies) and we should continue moving east rather than taking the next turn of the course. Going straight kept us on course back to the start/finish area at Grant Park where we would merge into the finish chutes. It was about a two-mile walk back, but our group had a shorter walk than others had from some of the other cutoff places. If I had been about fifteen minutes faster I might have been with one of the groups that got to run the whole way.

It was disappointing not to get to "finish". We heard about the course support through Little Italy, Chinatown and the Latin section, and I would have liked to experience it. But I think it really was the right decision to shut everything down. There wasn't much they could do about wild rumors going around about how many people were hospitalized or fatalities -- or that police would arrest you if you tried to continue running along the course. :-)

Big kudos to the Chicago businesses, spectators and residents who went out on their own to improvise hoses, sprinklers and water stops on their own -- the situation would have been far, far worse without them. The crowds were *great* everywhere I ran, and I can see why this race normally gets such great press. The medals are very beautiful with embroidered ribbons, but the t-shirts are surprisingly plain. I would like to return and do the full course in better weather. :-)

B,

Glad to hear that you are ok. That conditions at that race were brutal! Heck, the low 80’s heat took its toll on me in a 10 mile race here on Sunday. I couldn’t imagine doing a marry in worse conditions.

I am also glad that you recognized when enough is enough. I doubt I would have stopped which is the wrong thing to do. They were definitely right to stop the race. When people are dying then it needs to be shut down.

Anyway, glad to hear you were going strong even in that oppressive heat. When is your next marathon? Are you going to be at the Autism 5k this weekend? It is going to be a fast race. The conditions will be absolutely ideal. Upper 40’s no wind and sunny on a flat fast course! Great weekend for a PR!

Hey, Travis -- yep, I'll be there for the Autism 5k; I'm among the leaders of the Garner division of the Grand Prix! :-) I'll probably work it into a longer jog, so I won't be shooting for a PR, but you're right that it should be a very fast course!

Should be a good month; you can run a local race just about every weekend. Sunday is the Walk for Hope (I'll be jogging), then next weekend is the NCRC's 10-miler, then there's another Grand Prix race or two before November kicks off with the new City of Oaks Marathon and HillFest, which should be the last marathon I'll be in this year. (Thought about going to Kiawah in December, but fortunately I have to be here for our church's Christmas musical.) Then for Christmas I'm getting new feet. :-)

Just got back from the Autism Ribbon Run, where I just missed my goal of completely skipping over the 26:xx range. I finished 26:03 chip time (26:12 gun) for a PR by >1:15 - not a bad improvement, considering it's about 20 seconds per mile. That last uphill segment just before the last block was what killed me, I think. I could feel myself slowing down until I got over the top and back into the downhill segment. Still, it's a lot better than I expect to do on next weekend's course.

I'm finally getting my times down to where they're respectable within my AG in the Grand Prix series (50-54). The only reason I've finished as I as I have in the Grand Prix standings for the last two years is because I was the last person who completed at least four of the five races. This year I'm actually beating someone. I was still a minute behind Stig Olson, who I think keeps finishing ahead of me in the standings, but at least he's in sight now so I can start making him my target - once I figure out who he is at the races. (If you're reading this, Stig, it's just a little competitive fun.)

My full race report is in the Boomers and Beyond forum ("A measly four seconds 5k RR").

Anyone know how the Conquistadore did. I saw him before the race and watched for awhile to see him finish, but I either missed him or left before he was done. I wouldn't have wanted to be wearing that outfit last weekend!
