This weekend I decided to run Loblolly's full length, from the Umstead Harrison entrance out of the park all the way to the RBC Center. Having done it, this is not a trail run I'd generally recommend, unless you enjoy climbing over gates (well, one anyway), running through spider webs, tall grass and a wet culvert/tunnel, with some occassional bushwhacking to find your way thrown in for good measure. :-)That being said, Loblolly is very nice inside Schenk Forest. If I were going to do the run again, I'd probably take Loblolly inside Umstead till it intersects with S Turkey Creek, make a right turn onto S Turkey Creek and run to Reedy Creek, then turn left and exit the park on the Reedy Creek greenway. Keep a lookout on your right about 1/4 mile later and you'll see where Loblolly trail enters Schenck. I'd then follow that part of Loblolly taking it no farther than where it makes a left in order to parallel I-40/Wade Ave as that part of the trail then becomes completely overgrown and you also get all the noise from the highway. The parts of Loblolly that connect Umstead to Schenk and then from Shchenk to the RBC Center weren't particularly enjoyable. Here's the run: Motion Based Google Maps

Jay,Holy C@#$ you climbed 250 feet in 1 mile? That is nuts. I have done the 150+ foot scent in .9 miles in Umstead but that is ridiculous! Where exactly is that last climb? ------------------ My Profile

Ignore the elevation data ... the GPS is useless for that. In fact, I have motionbased setup to use their topographic data instead of my GPS records, but even that is way off.The only way to get something approaching accurate elevation is with a GPS that includes a barometric altimeter such as the Garmin Edge 305. http://wiki.motionbased.com/mb/MB_Gravity_Web_Service http://wiki.motionbased.com/mb/Accuracy http://blog.motionbased.com/2005/05/mb_gravity_elev.html The last mile is the climb up from Reedy Creek lake out to the Harrison entrance. j. Took the plunge and signed up for the Pinehurst international distance triathlon: http://www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=event_detail&eventID=565My training for the last two weeks has been awful, so I don't have much time until the race to make the best of it. I plan on making my long weekend run in Umstead for the next two weekends. I plan on doing the loop and now that the temperature has broke, I will try to extend the miles to ten. Here is the gmaps elevation for the magnificent mile on Sunday. This is going to be one fast race! The whole course only changes 12 feet in elevation. The first 1/8 of a mile is uphill. If you can call 12 feet a hill! The next half mile is up and down about 6-7 feet. And the final quarter mile drops off of that 12 foot cliff! The winners will be absolutely flying down Hillsborough on the return trip!Does anyone know if the quarter mile splits will be marked on the course? http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1317533

Here is a little better version of the gmaps for the magnificent mile. This one shows the elevation a little more accurately. Also the quarter mile marks are where the shadow starts between McDowell and S. Salisbury. And then even with the words New Bern on the other side of the capital building.http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1320113

Well, I managed to start off the fall racing season with a bang. I ran the Magnificent Mile today and totally smashed my goals. This is the first time I've run an open mile since high school (I was about 5:00 back then, back before the printing press had been invented), and I've managed to move my training up a notch over the summer, but I still didn't really have a good feel for what I was capable of. I was therefore targetting about 8:00 flat based on the 10k I ran out in Oregon six weeks ago. I under-estimated my abilities, though, and busted through with an unofficial 7:38! I may actually be somewhat competitive in the Grand Prix series this year. (A more complete race report in over in Boomers And Beyond, titled "Where'd that come from" RR.

I hope those who ran the Magnificent Mile had a great run. I had a magnificent 20 miles yesterday. I started at the Umstead Harrison entrance, ran down Reedy Creek to Graylyn out to the Graylyn gate, then back to Reedy Creek out the Trenton gate and followed the Reedy Creek greenway all the way to where it ends in Meridith at the corner of Hillsborough and Faircloth, then back. I finished w/a couple laps around the Harrison parking lot to round out the 20. The weather was great and I felt really strong the whole run. Bob - I said hello to you on Reedy Creek trail on my way back in, but I'm not sure if you heard and/or recognized me (or maybe you were just in the zone). :-) After the brutal summer the Fall weather is quite welcome. Yes the magnificent mile was a fantastic race. It was so cool to get to stand up there right next to some pretty awesome runners. That really was an elite field! There is a new guy in town now. This Jason Jabaut is someone to look out for. He is an incredible runner and he has been blowing away all of the course records in the area. This race was extremely well run and I would like to congratulate Mr. Walsh on a fantastic event! Even if his son can run a faster mile than he can! There is one other thing about this race. It was the start of the second empire grand prix series. This was an extremely fast race so it was hard to get some decent points. However, the race series is now 7 races instead of 5 and they only take your best 6 races. So it is not too late to get into the series. Shoot for 5 or 6 races and you should still be able to be competitive in your age group. An interesting thing about the series this year is that someone who runs 5 of the 7 races and wins them all will beat someone who scores 832 points in 6 of the races. That was not the case last year since it was the best 4 out of 5 races. Back then a person who ran 4 races at 80% of the winner would have scored 3200 points as opposed to the 3000 points a person would have received for winning 3 races. It is going to be extremely hard to be in the top 5 this year. I suspect that the overall winner will run only 5 or 6 races so the key is to run the races that he does not. That way you can score bonus points because the winning time will be slower. There is a race the day before the Raleigh Marathon and one on Thanksgiving day. Expect those to be great races to score some bonus points. That may sound a little cheap but a major part of the series is can you sustain your speed through an entire season. That is why they give anyone who runs all of the races an invitation to the banquet. Richard, Congrats on your run man! You smoked it. Just remember you still have 16 seconds on me even if that was 15 years ago ! Also Brad had a very impressive showing as well. You guys are blasting away your PRs. Keep it up!

Here is an awesome website to see all of your results for your races. If you sign-up for a login you can go in and verify the races you have done. Once you have done that you can see how many points you have scored for the year. It is actually pretty cool to see how you compare with everyone who is from NC.I checked out what the fastest 5K times are for someone from NC this year. 14:02 is flying! http://www.active.com/rankings/index.cfm?active=do.home&ref= 1 David Langat 33 Chapel Hill, NC 281 Debbie Green 5K Run/Walk for Leukemia WV 5K 08/03/07 14:02 2 David Langat 33 Chapel Hill, NC 4 Virginia Derby Day 5K and Party on the Green VA 5K 07/21/07 14:23

I think I saw just about everyone this morning. I ran from my house to the Reedy creek entrance of Umstead. Then I met my wife and we did 5.75 miles in Umstead.I did about 13.2 miles today and I felt pretty good. It was really nice to see everyone on the run. Next week is the 2nd Empire race(Sunday at 2:00 PM). It is going to be crazy fast. Hope to see everyone there! Also we have a great 5K tune up run on Thursday night with the NCRC September series last run of the season. Hopefully, everyone can make it out on Thursday and Sunday. ------------------ My Profile

Bah - 5k, too short for my taste. :-)I just registered for the Anna's Angels 10 miler in a few weeks. I ran this race last year and I thought it was a great race. If you like the longer distances, I recommend this one. I'm also going to be running the ATT 10 Miler, but registration for that is sold-out. Maybe some of you are registered? I did 17 this morning and though it started out sluggish, I finished strong. I'm feeling pretty good about my training for the City of Oaks. I'd like to run that in 3:30 (and I'm confident I could on a flat course ... just not sure about all those hills). I'll see how the 10 milers go before I commit to that time though. I just noticed today that the City of Oaks will have a variety of pace groups. This is a wonderful asset, esp with a good pace group leader. Nice seeing you this morning Travis. I also saw Mike Walsh a couple times, but he doesn't know me from Adam. I'll have to introduce myself at one of the NCRC runs eventually. j.

Yea it was good seeing you yesterday. My wife and I were actually trying to catch backup to you on the way back. We lost you shortly after the airport lookout. What mile were you on at that point? You were still running pretty strong then.I also ran the Anna’s Angels last year. It is a very flat fast course. I am scheduled to run it and ATT this year. That will be tough doing so many 10 milers in a short period of time. Oh yea I plan on running a few 5k’s on those weekends also. Don’t forget the short distance races. The speed those races give you can really help you finish strong even in the longer distances. See you all at the races and on Thursday night for some light running and heavy drinking! quote: Originally posted by jaysoffian: Bah - 5k, too short for my taste. :-)I just registered for the Anna's Angels 10 miler in a few weeks. I was around mile 14 at that point, doing about 8:30 pace. The climb from the bottom of Grayln to the top of Cemetery Hill is a killer, but I'm usually going strong again by the time I get to the water fountain. From airport lookout back to N Cary Park it's pretty much a slight downhill or level, so I try to run that as fast as I can. Sometimes if I hear folks behind me, I use that as motivation to speed up. :-)Here's the run: http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/4029524 I won't be able to make the run this Thu due to a work obligation.

I'm training for the Marines Corp marathon, and so far it's going well. I was thinking of getting a sports massage to help my legs loosen up (they are starting to get tight, and this is even with yoga in my training schedule weekly). So I was wondering if anyone can recommend a place or person that they have gone to in the Raleigh area. Thanks!

Moving from Raleigh out to Clayton and am looking for some running trails/routes out that way. Have heard about Lake Benson but the internet tubes have revealed no real information. Is there a trail that goes around that lake? If anyone knows would appreciate the help. Thanks.

Well the second empire race was another successful event. Great job to everyone out there. There were some pretty impressive times. See you guys at the Anna's angels 10 miler next week. That is a good medium distance course to post a fast time on.I was finally able to break 19:00 for a 5k with the kids. Here is my race report.
