I am going to skip out on the “Chisel” class at my gym to do the NCRC run this week. We can talk about the long run this weekend if you make it to the NCRC run.

Has anyone ran Falls Dam after 5:30 when the gates close? Is it OK to run there up until sunset, or because being it managed by USACE, we are not allowed.

Travis - I still plan to make tomorrow evening's run, but in case I don't see you, my plan for this weekend is to do 17 miles starting at 6:30 am on *saturday*. I'll probably launch from N Cary Park again, but I'm also considering parking on Old Ready Creek at the bridge that crosses over I-40.

I'm a gadget geek and finally got a Garmin Forerunner. Here's tonight's NCRC 12k:

Jay,

I have to skip out on the run tomorrow. I literally ran out of my shoes(I tore a hole in them) on the run yesterday. I have to wait till I get my new pair next week before I can run again.

How did your Garmin workout last night? I forgot to ask you about it, sorry. I am a gadget freak and an incompetent pacer so I definitely could use one of those if they work well.

The August group run was fun last night. It was extremely hot and the course was challenging but there was a fairly good turnout. I ended up drinking 44 ounces in the first 6 miles. I had two water bottles with me and I had to refill them once just to have enough water to finish! Gotta love running in North Carolina in the Summer! I still don’t see how you guys run without water? I would shrivel up and die without water(See Thunder road marathon results for proof).

Anyway I felt pretty strong on the run last night. I thought I had paced myself pretty well and I still had some left at the end. I can’t wait for the racing season to start. I really enjoy the shorter runs. These medium and long runs just take so much out of you. See you guys at the next event!

Amazon. Also consider the 305, it's the 205 + heart rate monitoring.

I also have a Polar RS200sd, but I got tired of having to deal with the footpod, the watch, and the heart rate strap. I just wanted something I could put on my wrist and go which the Garmin gives you.

I have an iPod Nano/Nike+ combo too (you can use the shoe sensor with any shoes, you don't need the Nike+ shoes) but I don't always want to run with music.

I don't think there's any other gadgets out there for me to buy. :-)

Sorry you can't make the run tomorrow. Maybe next weekend.

Anybody in Durham?

I recently relocated. I am a beginner. Only 6mths running. But managed to do a long, slow run of 10 miles yesterday. Emphasis on slow.

Just wondering if there are any other beginners in Durham. I am near RTP.

Hello all. I have been so busy with work and travel I have not posted for awhile. Had a great run this morning on the Umstead loop. Best run I had this year I think.

I'm getting ready for the Pinehurst Internation distance triathlon. The work, travel and heat has held me back a bit. Looking forward to a break in the temperature. Sorry I missed the August runs in Umstead with all of you.

It looks like the posts have dwindled to almost nothing. I hope everyone will report back once the season starts?

My first race will be the magnificent mile. I actually have been training pretty hard for that which is definitely counter productive to my ultimate goal(Race every single major distance from the mile to the marathon in a 3 month span). I have been doing a lot of short(5K or less) sprints and I have been doing a lot of intense workouts at the gym.

If I can get a decent start I think I should be able to at least get under 5:00 minutes for the mile. That is going to be one crazy start though!

I plan on concentrating on the 2nd empire series so I don’t think I will have enough time to ramp up to the Marathon distance by the time the Raleigh Marathon comes around. Since they moved the inside out half to next year I might actually run the Oaks half and then try the Thunder Road marathon again. There is just something that makes me want to beat that marathon after it so thoroughly destroyed me last year!

I hope to see everyone at the races. There are so many good ones that you can really race every single weekend. Let us know how your training is coming and don’t forget to update your goals for this season on your profile page!

I've been late in thanking NCRC for putting on a great (and hot) August running series in Umstead Park. Well-organized group runs, door prizes, post-run water and Gatorade -- done very well and a lot fun for everyone (averaging about 40 runners a week).

Give serious thought to coming out to the new NCRC *September* series, running on Raleigh's Crabtree Creek greenway each Thursday night. No charge, just show up and run. All the details are at http://www.ncroadrunners.org/Series/septemberseries.pdf.

I have to second Brad’s recommendation of the September series. The August series was a lot of fun but frankly it was just too hot. The September series should be warm but doable.

If you like running and you like hanging out then the September series is for you!

Your welcome. It was definetly the hottest Aug series yet, but everyone had a good time. We had between 43 and 60 runners every week and despite the heat some impressive times were posted each week on a tough course.

I'm sure Olga and Josh will do a finejob with the Sept series and I look forward to running and let someone else do the work.

Joey,

Thanks again! You are the only person I know that can make 95+ degree runs on crazy hilly courses seem fun! Another plus the September series has on the August series is the Beer! Unfortunately, I don’t think Umstead would have allowed that! That is ok though, it wouldn’t have stayed cold anyway.

Can’t wait to see everyone out there on Thursday night!

If anyone wants to get the season started this weekend then there are quite a few races. My personal favorite is the “Run for Healthier Babies”. The course doesn’t have any big hills but it does have some short steep ones. If anyone is interested then here is a link to the info and the gmaps elevations.

Hi all,

I need to start trail running at Umstead to train for the 50 miler in April 2008.
I've never been there, so I have no clue of which areas are safe/good for Sunday runs. This upcoming Sunday, I have a 10-12 miler on schedule. So, I will appreciate if you guys can give me some feedback:

1) What's safe at am on a Sunday (I am assuming there will be a ton of people biking and running)
2) What's the best loop or double loop for that distance?
3) What is relativelly rolling hills, instead of steep/heavy hills? (I am coming back from a nasty injury and need to keep the hills not as agressive right now).

Thanks in advance

TY

The entire park is safe at all times of day. I've never had any trouble with the cyclists. The bike/bridle trails are plenty wide and the park is huge ... it's never been what I'd call "crowded" by any stretch of the imagination. However, if you want to avoid cyclists, show up early. You'll start to see the cyclists show up after 8:30 AM or so, getting heavier as the morning wears on.

In any case, the cyclists/horses are restricted to the bike/bridle trails. You can always run the single track stuff and there the only thing you'll have to worry about is families/dog walkers typically later in the day (and still not a problem).

2) What's the best loop or double loop for that distance?

There are so many options, I don't know what to recommend. You haven't said if you wanted to run single-track or not, or where you are likely to park (common entrances are the two parking lots, Graylyn, and the Ready Creek "West Gate"). Here's a map with fairly accurate distances:

http://umsteadcoalition.org/trailmap.htm

quote:

3) What is relativelly rolling hills, instead of steep/heavy hills? (I am coming back from a nasty injury and need to keep the hills not as agressive right now).

Reedy Creek is probably the gentlest of the bike/bridle trails with only one significantly steep hill (cemetery hill), but that's a short hill. Graylyn and the Reedy Creek spur up to the Harrison lot are probably the next steepest. Turkey Creek Trail (esp N Turkey Creek) is probably the most aggressive bike/bridle trail, so avoid that one initially. :-)

As for single track, Company Mill isn't too bad. The initial descent from the Harrison Parking lot to the loop portion is kinda steep, the rest is fairly gentle except for one or two short climbs (as I recall... I don't run single track there much).

For this weekend, you could park at the Reedy Creek neighborhood entrance (go north on Reedy Creek road off of Weston Parkway and park just before the bridge which goes over 40). Then do an out and back on Reedy Creek Trail. That will give you about 10 miles.

For longer runs, I like to park at N Cary Park:

http://townofcary.org/depts/prdept/parks/north.htm

Then take the Blackcreek Greenway into Umstead. From N Cary Park to the West Gate entrance is a little over two miles.

BTW - if you're looking for a flat bike/bridle trail of similar surface to Umstead, consider the ATT in Wake County. That's where I run when I want to give my achilles a break.

HTH.

Are you a male or female? I would not recommend that any females run anywhere before it is light out. I also don’t recommend running alone to anyone. I know that it is a necessity. Therefore, if you have to run alone in Umstead then I would start no earlier than 7:15 AM on Sundays. There are always people running in the park by that time on Sundays.

My favorite course is to start at the Reedy Creek entrance off of Weston Parkway and then run over to the Harrison Park entrance. That is about 6-7 miles each way and it is only hilly at the start and turn around points.

Don’t forget that the September series starts tonight with a 5 mile run or a 5K option. It is going to be a glorious day and it will be a fun event. I plan on getting drinks after the run also! Running then Beer, what could be better?

Sorry, I totally misinterpreted the "what's safe" question to mean "will I have any problem with cyclists running me over" as opposed to "do I need to worry about getting mugged or worse...".

What a terrific run last night. Great job on organizing this one. The
course is absolutely flat until the last kilometer. There is a decent
hill up that last kilometer but it really wasn't that bad. Next week
is the 7K that eliminates the hill. This is one fast course!

I was hoping it wouldn't be to hot last night but in the end my car
read 96 degrees right before we started. It was a lot hotter than I
thought it would be. I sucked down 22 ounces of water before the run
and about 35 ounces during the short 5 mile run. It was that hot!
Maybe next week will be a little cooler. I guess that is what you get
for running in the NC summer!

The after race festivities were equally as good! They had $2 adult
beverages and half price appetizers all night long! You can not beat
that! Hope everyone can make it out next week. This is the perfect
tune up(Minus the 32 ounce adult beverage and 20 buffalo wings I ate) for the ultra fast magnificent mile run next Saturday.

Here is a link to my race report from the race for healthier babies this morning. If you missed this race then you need to put it on the calendar for next year. It was extremely fast and accurate and it was one of the best run events I have been to!

http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum8/HTML/010521.shtml

See you all at the Thursday night NCRC(Road Runners) session(4.34 miles or 7 kilometers this week) and at the magnificent mile on Saturday.

Tks jasoffian and JDF! Awesome input! I copied all the info and will def take a look at the map I JUST got from the race package

I am a 35 yo female. I am mainly a road runner, and this will be my first trail run. As safety, my main concern is about to run by myself early in the morning. But 7:15 sounds reasonable, although I was planning on 6:30.

Now, the newbiest question. If the park only officially opens at 8am, I just need to park my car outside and walk in? I thought people were not allowed in before or after park hours...

The official response is that the park is only open during the park hours. I was once stopped by a park ranger and informed of such. He let me finish my run (This was in the winter when it ws dark out and I had a headlamp on). The reality is that people run in the park before and after park hours. They don't regularly patrol that I am aware of. They are probably concerned more with liability a night in the dark then they are in the morning when it is light out. During the summer there are often a number of vehicles parked just outside the gate before the park officially opens.
