What a fun day setting up that ginormous booth. You never appreciate those giant Tinker Toy sets when they are together, but I surely will from now on.

Completed my 10 day training program tonight...2 days early.
I think I'm gifted.

Penn State Invitational results. (6k) Guelph women were 9th of 25 teams. Lindsay Carson came second again, this time within 3 seconds of the winner. Jen was 136 of 278 runners at 23:31. She said it was a tough hilly course compared to Stanford, but she gave it everything she had and sprinted uphill at the end to move up a few places. That'sa my girl!!

It's 9 degrees and overcast. Sounds perfect!

I'm only running a little less than and 8th of a full. See you down there, jc.

*yawn*...us 5k people have to rise an hour earlier for this.

That's a pretty good race Jim, especially for someone who hasn't been training.

Yeah, I can't complain too much. Got 2nd in my a/g, at least I was under 21...I wasn't sure I could even do that today. Weather was perfect, just a slight cross breeze so no pounding wind in your face like last year.

Hey, maybe we'll have a fall and winter like last year.

I'm thinking there might be something to this training thing.

I have been on my feet all day for the past 2 weeks either setting up the new outlet store or setting up the RR booth for the race expo.

That, combined with my 8 training runs in the past 6 weeks made a PB rather doubtful...I crack me up.

We cruised along just fine beating all the snails and a good portion of the slugs and even a few of the walkers. Oace was nice and even...and slow. My legs hurt more than they ever have for a half before...even the ones I ran 25 minutes faster.

Perhaps it's just old age...nah!!!

Met a homeless guy in the park who said he was JimR...looked like him except the hair was too short.

tigger, we saw several very flat cousins of Earl's on Yonge St.
BTW, your daughter is really rockin and rollin. If she needs any help with speedwork I would be happy to tell her what not to do.

.

No wonder, I didn't see you at the outlet store. Had to stop in and buy a couple of pairs of the $99 Nimbi

My daughter was handing out the water for the marathoners at Ontario place. It was only a small hop over to the outlet store. Sub 21 great time Jim all things considered. Carolyn ran 23:50 official about 23:30 chip time. Not too bad considering she only started running a month ago with me. When I got injured, everyone stopped running around our house..............WHIMPS,...... but I got them going again

I didn't even catch tigger's post. I think I'm going blind, or these long work hours are getting to me. I've been at work all day today and all day yesterday till 11 last night trying to meet a deadline. Tigg, jen's doing great! It must be your coaching.....

HI Jim,

I resigned in August from all coaching responsibilities. Her new coach is Dave Scott-Thomas, who is head coach of Track & Field at Guelph. More notably, he coaches Reid Coolsaet, who recently ran a 28:15 10k race in Berlin. Ha! Right now I doubt if I could do half that distance in that time!

Hello, I'm new to the community but not to running. I'm training for a half marathon. I live west side of downtown in Toronto. I usually run in High Park or along Harbord to Queen's Park or in the Poplar Plains area and Beltline.
I am wondering about indoor and outdoor running tracks. Any favourites ? Any recommendations ?
I usually go to Central Tech, but with darkness and cooler weather my thoughts are turning indoors. Is U of T the only option and how do I come in out of the cold ?
Thanks for all thoughts posted.

U of T has the only reasonably-sized indoor track (200 m) around downtown. I'm sure a YMCA somewhere has one that's smaller (probably ~140 metres). Unless you run a couple of miles at a time, you don't want to be running on one of those.

I'd suggest running outside all winter. Assuming you're dressed properly, it's a lot more fun than 60 laps of the indoor track ever could be. I go to U of T and therefore have access to that track year-round, but I've probably run there twice in the last three years.

Yes, I'd rather run on a treadmill than a 140m track. I didn't realize the UofT track was only 200m. I've run outside the last two winters, but thought perhaps I was missing something being only on the streets (face pressed against glass as if looking into the candy store; grass always greener, etc.).

I've just started a new training program and until I get a pace watch, I need to gauge my pace by distance covered, which is easier on a track obviously.

Thanks Aurang. Anyone else ? What about the best outdoor track in the city ? I sometimes wonder if I could turn an ankle in the ruts on the Central Tech track ...

If I need a track, I usually just go to the closest one which is East York Collegiate for me. One of the nicest tracks I've seen is at Birchmount and Kingston Rd, but that's a bit far for you.

Birchmount is the second nicest track in the city, the best one has to be at Varsity Stadium. I just saw the new one last Sunday. AWSOME! Royal Blue with the white lines looks great. Other than that just run in the parks, indoor running sucks.

can you just show up and run at Varsity Stadium, or do you have to be a member at U of T or Hart House ?

A couple of weeks ago I ran at the Saskatoon Fieldhouse, which has an excellent indoor 200 meter track. The inner lane is 200 meters and each lane increases to the sixth, which I think is around 233 meters. After running on a standard track it felt really tight in the corners, but I quickly got used to them and managed a 15k progression run with the final 5k at threshold pace. When I first started running I belonged to a rec center with a small indoor track. It was 9 laps per kilometer if I recall correctly, and I used it exclusively for my first couple of years of running. I never went outdoors until I moved back to Timmins, where there are no indoor facilities other than around the outside of the hockey ice.

I would sooner run on a track than a treadmill regardless of track length.

I'll have to ask the kids, let you know later or tomorrow. Son says they domed the field last year, but the track wasn't in the dome..........Too bad.

OK the bad news is you have to be a member of the athletic center.....$605 per year or $40 per week or $15 per day. The schedule is also limited, the facility has no time allocated after 4pm. However members would be able to use the indoor track (200 meters) as well.

Students get free use.

So like I said earlier the trails around the city are great places to run

I imagine Birchmount has a similar system, cheaper though I bet

in one case they are cheaper ... compare prices of Garmin Forerunner 205 at Running Room ($250) and Mountain Equipment Co-op ($305) ... and I thought the Co-op was a not-for-profit.
Despite the strong C$, prices of US made shoes have not dropped ... but I was told recently, and have no way of confirming or denying this, by a RR employee that the wholesaler prices have not come down.

Thanks for the pricing information on U of T's athletic centre.

Actually people have been coming into the store saying the prices of the shoes they wanted were less at RR than SportMart.

Personaly, I have found that I can buy Asics cheaper in Atlanta than at RR with my discount.

Asics is esoecially high because there is no Asics Canada and they are purchased by a distributor in Canada from Asics USA from Asics Japan. I have no idea why.

I do know wholesale prices of most manufactured goods entering Canada bear no relation to the value of ther Canajun dollar right now.

I have no problems buying shoes online as long as I know what I want, but I prefer to buy in person from a run specific store, particularly one I visit often. It gives me the channce to bring them back if I have problems. What do the onliners do?

Here in Smithers I deal with a tri store called McBikes, where I buy shoes about 50% of the time. I also buy from RR in Vancouver (Denham St.) when I am there because it suits my purpose for running in Vancouver. I am there often and keep a set of gear at the corporate office. They cost me list price, wheras McBikes gives me a small discount, but then again I know I can go talk to the top dog in the company on a personal basis if I choose to do so. That's got to be worth something! (My daughter had her pic taken with him last May, but after winning her division of the HM I think JS will want to have HIS pic taken with HER this spring!)

I would not experiment with new shoes online but I buy most of my other gear online through Raceready. I am moving towards high socks (XC ski) now, and am buying them locally, but not at McBikes.

I was at the Detroit Marathon expo over the weekend. I can't believe how cheap everything was. That said, shoes in stores now were purchased well before dollar parity.

even with those goofy discounts that RR comes out with every few weeks RR is still over priced. however, thank goodness for RR's sake they suck in the learn to runners to buy all the gear at RR when they sign on for the clinics, but not all stick with the programs. anyways, it has been a very long time since i shopped at RR. prices too high and many are flakey staff - here today, gone tomorrow. better deals eleswhere. great deals in the usa and expos. some cdn dealers will haggle to. i looked at sportsmart once...pass, not great shoes for what i want.
