Ok...I ran a mile in 8 minutes...holy moly I think that must be near the world record. Three weeks ago I was struggling to run 3 miles at ANY speed and now I'm up there with the Ferraris. It only took me 3 hours to recover. ...geesh it wasn't all THAT long ago I managed to go faster than that and string 26 of them together.
...perhaps a bit more training is still required.

JC - you'll get there - you know you will. You always seem to bounce back rather quickly.Strep - your running has been so consistent and strong. Maybe you just need an off week to recover a bit to get back at it. Whenever my motivation is lacking, I try to take an extra day off. Sometimes my head needs the day off more than my body. Eddie - you know we'll be waiting for pictures, but I don't think you could top last year!! Went for a run with the XSNRG running group last night at Sunnybrook. Super nice people and good hard running. We did a long warmup and then 15 x (1' on/1' off). I think I'm going to keep going since it will definitely help me. I can't always make the runs due to family commitments, but I'll go as often as I can. Today I'm planning my first ride after my race. I haven't even taken the number stickers off my bike yet!!

Hi all,I trust everyone is having a great summer and enjoying the recent cooler temps. Belated congrats to Dawn on your great result in Lake Placid! I had my knee surgery three weeks ago. The good news is the recovery has been very good. The bad news is the damage was worse than the MRI showed. In addition to the meniscus tear (easily cleaned up) I have level IV cartilage loss of the inner (medial) portion of my knee. Basically level IV loss is complete loss and I have bone on bone in one spot. There was a flap of cartilage that did not appear on the MRI – the flap had to be removed as it can be repaired and the damage was right to the bone. The flap was in the exact location of where I was experiencing the most pain – so it is good that I had the scope. I am working on strengthening the muscles around my knee and have resumed using the elliptical. It is likely that my running days are over and I think I will switch to biking and swimming. I could maybe run but it is highly likely I will need more knee surgery in the future so I think I will avoid high impact activities to but it off as long as possible. Enjoy the rest of the summer and best of luck with everyone’s fall races. Cheers, Craig

That sucks to hear, Craig. I hope that you can stay involved with the sport on some level, or that you can find another sport that interests you in the same way as running.I knew that there was a reason I've run almost 50k in the last two days. Well, it was partly the great weather and partly not running Monday or Tuesday. My goal is to break 37 minutes at the Toronto Island 10k (PB 37:43) and my runs are going really well. I ran an 8k tempo in just over 31 minutes last night, which was much faster than I could've expected and almost as fast as my time at the Spring Run-Off. ------------------ My profile

I'm so sorry to hear that, Craig. Keep the faith - doctors aren't always right. The body has an amazing capacity to heal. Also, you're not alone with your running problems. Many triathlon races are now offering an aquabike division (swim/bike only) because there are so many people who don't want to or can't run.

Glad the recovery's going well Craig, but the knee thing sure does suck. Did they offer up any explanations as to why here's so much cartilege loss? I assume it's related to the tear.No immediate plans for me. I'm just trying to keep one foot in front of the other, but summer is a tough time to be trying to get to bed earlier enough so I can get a morning run in. As the kids get older the hours get later...a lot of runs have been moved to the afternoon and it ain't always pleasant running when it's 30+ and high noon.

Thanks for the update Craig, hope you can find something that rings your chimes for fitness and competition.I have run 5...count em 5 days in a row. I even ran a mile under 8 minutes....my skin almost fell off at that speed. I will be much happier when I'm 10 pounds lighter.

Road / race results has a new rankings page that covers the top 2000 performances for each category on the list for 2007. I'm only in there for two races, the Mississauga half and the Nightcrawler. At least I'm on page 1 for the age group rankings (106 for 8k/5 mile in 40-49, 125th for the half in 40-49), page 2 for the overall rankings. Neat stuff.

I'm in there a few times, though they don't have me listed in my specialty, the 9k, where I have the second-fastest time in the province this year.

Hi AllCraig, sorry to hear the news, but hopefully your recovery will be better than expected. JC, nothing like jumping back into it! Are you heading to the Crim. I'm not going this year as I'll be halfway to Hilton Head as the race is run. Thanks Eddie and Dawn for the push. I took Dawn's advice and took a few days off, and feel much better. Part of it is I can't always make my group workout due to family/work commitments and then I guilt myself out. But when I look at what I've done I'm on track so a few days of unguilting myself gave me a new perspective. Jim, your post helped. I'm on the second page, 232 out of 780 something in my age group and that made me feel much more confident. Its all about balance! Looking forward to a week in Hilton Head but doing my long run Thursday morning (31 K) so I won't have to do it in the South Carolina heat on Saturday!! Patti

Too bad you're not going to be doing your long run there. My friend's sister spotted Ryan Hall running there.

Good luck Jim. Are you going to go under 20 or try and get a benchmark for your fitness?I was going to do that one, but I ran a fast, flat 5k on Centre Island on Sunday and got the sub-18 I wanted. Don River's slower and I never have a good run there, though I do want to go back just for that reason.

I'll be manning the finish line. Want me to slip the results guy a few bucks to shave a minute or two off your time? Good Luck

Yesterday for a change I thought I'd go for a blade rather than an 8K run. I went along the trail on the Burlington each strip and did a total of 28K in about 90 minutes. It really wasn't much of a workout at all...almost effortless. Probably my HR never got above about 90. I was thinking though that if my 15 year old $39 blades had a meltdown it would be a long walk back on scorching asphalt in my stocking feet. That was a sobering thought. I'm thinking that's probably not all that useful for cross-training

Thanks guys. Eddie, you can slip some money to the results guy at my race (his name's Paddy, I think). I'd like it if they could shave off the four-tenths of a second they added to my time, and acknowledge that I outkicked the attractive blonde that got my time.------------------ My profile

Hey folks,Thanks for all the good wishes. Rehab is going well and my knee and leg are getting stronger. I was out of the bike this morning (first ride post surgery) and had a great hour-long ride on the waterfront - the knee feels fairly good. Good luck to everyone in their fall races. I will check-in once in a while to see how everyone is doing. Cheers, Craig

Hi Craig, glad you're out and about (and not out in a boat....although that would be nice too).I didn't do the Don. Did watch part of it. I should have run it cuz there was a big gap between the couple of talented runners who did show up, and everyone else. I did 2 hours worth with some quick trail stuff in Sunnybrook. I was standing at the turn just below the stables back towards the race finish talking with the guy manning that corner and watching the runners. So a small cluster of guys in the 10k head past, he directs them to stay left as they go...but about 100 meters past they instead turn right and head up the wrong hill. So we're both yelling at them to go back left. The guys near the back of the cluster clue in and turn left, while 2 of them keep going. So I take off on a sprint to catch them but they were too far ahead of me and gone. I opt to stick around and redirect everyone at the section to the left. About 10 minutes later, those same two guys return down the hill and start giving me sh|t for not directing them the right way. Hah. The course was severely undermanned, but that race always seems to be that way.

That's one reason I don't like doing the Don River Run. It has amazing potential for getting lost because of the many turns on the course and the size of Sunnybrook Park. The first time I did it, my friend was on track for sub-17 until he got lost. He crossed the line in 42 minutes.I did 8 x 800 at Queen's Park today. I thought it was pretty hot while running, but not hot enough to justify just how slowly I was running. Then I found it that it was 32 degrees.

Well, where I grew up it's called Labah Day, so I've come a long way. Just got back from a very hot 5 mile run. I should have gone out earlier because it looked beautiful then, but I couldn't get my butt out the door.
