Easygo,

Sunday is no good for me. The little one is having her Birthday Party that day with he girlfriends from school.
Saturday Afternoon I will probably be running loops on the trails at Mount-Royal.

So far no running this week took two days rest and yesterday my nose was running like a faucet and sneezed about 100 times also felt rundown and crappy. So I'll try a run tonight maybe.

Now this is crazy.

Gag: When comparing the effectiveness of running no more than 2:15 to a longer distance run, say a 20 miler, did the reading refer other variables in the, French style of traning?

The variables that spring to mind in any training program are: frequency, intensity and duration. I think that it is safe to argue that the long the distance run the greater the recovery time required. Recovery time would be the duration of time required to overcome any residual effects from previous one
as measured by effort and heart rate

Nominally speaking, running a series of 20 mile runs provides more benefit than mid 20km run. However, in the greater context, the cost of the 20 mile run would be that an additional speed workout that would have been utilised in the form of a recovery day. One could also argue that running longer distance predisposes the runner to injury.

20 mile runs are long slow distance (lsd) runs and in order to record fast times in marathon races, speed work is key. I do not run 3 hour long runs because I like to, I run them because I'm too slow.

In the end, assuming that the runner is running the same volume, my preference is to change the allocation to run more mid 20km distances, and use the time savings from the shortened recovery time to focus on speed work. Running marathons is more than just an exercise in slow twitch muscles.

Any thoughts?

I'm off to Hamilton this weekend for the Around the Bay race. It should be quite an exciting event, It is sold out and it will be interesting running with the other 5200 runners.

Have a good weekend.

TB

That girl ran around 250km a week... And she did long runs of around 30k... of course in around 2h or so probably.

Small group speed run in the rain this evening, nice to not have all the layers on, gloves etc. Extra daylight bonus.

Good luck TB, be good, be safe, have a most excellent time.

Good luck to other racers as well, have a great weekend everyone, weather will be warmer.

Hi Df. Still need a drive? Give me a call.

TB. Good luck in the Around-the-Bay. I thought about it briefly but opted for Lasalle instead. Need a faster race to boost my confidence prior to Boston. We'll be watching for you from afar.

Chop? You're alive. Nice to hear from you. All we are missing is Truxx. He was running up a storm for a while (2 runs within 7 days), but has gone into hibernation again.

TB Good luck in Hamilton.

Merc, good luck in LaSalle. Anyone going to have a camera to take lots of photos.

Took 4 days rest and ran a 5k this morning 23.55 min. I think I'll cut back a bit this week-end and keep my long run to 2-2.5 hours max. Still have the sniffles and I am achooing(sneezing) alot. maybe my allergies, I"ll take my anti-histamines and see.

Enjoy the week-end maybe able to run in shorts,

Roly

The variable they refer to is running part of it at marathon pace.

I've decided to run only a 20miler and put a little more speed in my other runs. So far, so good, I'm getting stronger already, I can feel it. Running hills everyday pays I guess. I tried it two years ago and it paid off. But I tried 4 20milers the year before and it paid off too.

Good luck to all racers this weekend

Hey, seems like I'm going to be in Lasalle this weekend. With a little organization, it's amazing what one can do. I might even think of bringing my camera.

Df, are you still coming?

When is it warm enough to wear shorts? I dont remember from one year to the next. I often end up overdressing.

Good luck with your event, TB!

Problems with my internet provider, rare, but it happens, servers..whatever. Anyone trying to reach me - thats what it is, haven't fallen off the face of the planet.

Genou- yep, trying to be there. As you and I know, last minute things can happen but so far so good. I'm not running but I'll holler my lungs out.

Gag - as Gro would say, "the experiment continues"

Roly - get better, no injuries or sickness allowed..

Hello once again all!!!!

Chops, Welcome Back!
Mars... I have been terrible with communication lately... Have meant to call to wish both of you a fast recovery (from illness & work overload).
TB, Good luck in Hamilton... don't try to win this one... keep that for europe - it would be so much more impressive.
Sally, News about the tat/ink/art? I am in the market for a new bike this year, should be fun!
Merc, DF, KJ, Good luck in Lasalle. I will probably be there, but not to run. Cordelia (4y/o) will be signed up for the 1K, so we will probably get there for most people to finish. I will try to remember to bring a camera. Who am I kidding, my 4 y/o daughter is running, of course there will be a camera.

Anyway, I should try to get out there and run one of these days.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend, in Lasalle or in Hamilton!

Gag: J-Y is a big believer in running long runs (part of them) at marathon race pace or faster... From observing results from friends (with different coaches), I tend to agree with that philosophy. BTW, are you still swimming? Ta conjointe n'est-elle pas une nageuse?

Silly: Rest, rest rest rest rest. Eat well (no junk, lots of nutrients) and you'll get better faster. Be patient, it's not fun. You need to cut down though, you might be physically able to do all the things you do but it will slow down your recovery. I learnt the hard way!

Actually, I'm following the Mtl marathon program for speedwork, but my longs runs are longer. For the last 10 weeks, I'll probably follow an old J.-Y. program. Just one 20miler but more volume during the week.

As I spent pratically all winter in Mt-Ste-Anne, I haven't swim for a while. But I'll probably go in the pool when I'll be back in Mtl for good. And yes, my conjointe est une nageuse, but she has not swim for a while as well. BTW have you heard about her coach Nadine, who's the best in town?

Merci, Merc. Good Luck today.

Now can someone unplug that damn snow making machine it's enough. I want to start running in mud, with the fresh smell of melting dog poo in the air. Ah Spring.

Thanks to my personal cheering section of Df7, Mitch and the rest of the crew for their strong support on this breezy, cool day. I guess an unspectacular 39:00min - 10K got me the place I deserve, namely 4th place in my class.....boo hoo. Anything in the 38:30's would have been saisfying as a first race of the year, but breathing problems (forgot my pump) had me gasping at 5K. Hit my target of 19:00 minutes at 5K, but realized I couldn't maintain that, so made a pace adjustment of 10 additional seconds/ kilometer, for the last half. It didn't quite work out that way. Turned out to be more than that......oh well. When it warms up a bit, add a few more miles, roll up the sleeves & get to work time! Thanks again everyone.

How is Ninja doing in Niagara? Anyone following?

Hello everyone,

Congratulations Merc! You did so well again. It was nice to be able to catch a hug from you.

Df, I'm sorry, I had to rush home immediately after the race! It was great seeing you but too short! I did'nt have time to tell you all about the last chapter... We have to do a Hurley's very soon -Sallyyyy!

I'm sorry to have missed the O's and the JB clan.

My friend Norm had an amazing 43-something for his very first 10k. very promising...

I did my average time... I felt heavy and slugish during the 1st half but things went a bit better at toward the end and I think I could do better next time.

I want more spring please.

Where is TB???

Hope everyone had fun in Lasalle and Hamilton, I was a tad dissappointed when I woke to find that it wasn't going to be anywhere near 16 degrees C that Ed Cowell (spelling) had promised us, Ed and I will need to have a little chat about that...

Hahaha! DR, I hear you : I took meteomedia.com off my 'favorites' this weekend and am now using the Canoe weather report because meteomedia always promises warmer weather than reality
