The shin splint on my left leg remains and I do not anticipate this injury recovering. My goal is to prevent it from becoming worse. I started using a half water/half Gatorade solution on my long runs today and it does help.

Core program and drills consume the majority of my time. Just looking forward to running without any specific purpose in mind.......

... the site of the"shin splint" on your left legs.. is how big?..... the whole front of your leg or just a specific spot? if you poke that specific spot does it hurt? does the pain go after about 15 minutes of running? Before running, if you were to hop on your left leg for 2 minutes how does it feel?

IMVHO.... if you can't do the hopping thing comfortably, don't run. If it's only one leg and it's in a specific spot, don't run because it might not be a shin splint. Stress fractures tend to feel better after about 15 minutes of running.... well at least mine did! but the next day is the problem... very painful!

..... it was a whole season (2004) without races due to stress fractures that sent me looking for softer surfaces to run on.... the frustration of not being able to run drove me insane.... not a pretty sight!

.....there are some exercises that might help.....

hey merc.... wot e-mail address do you use these days?

roly.... please don't get hurt

ss: I can think of two or three little places that wouldn't interfere with your career

no run for mr today.... just work! Ho Humm

Hi Gary. Are you home now? Actually, all my various email accounts are interconnected, but I recently have used <mercuryrunner@hotmail.com> for running purposes but the others are all still active.

SS I'm thinking one of those places rymes with career

Grommit, Hurt, what me?

Sherpa John who is designing the Pittsfield ultra wrote back to me in the ultra forum and looks like there will be a 3 mountain (half) bailout if one can't finish the course.

"Roly.. I'm designing the course for the June event as well. It's going to be tough. Racers will have the option to go for 3 peaks or all 6.. more to come in the next week or two. Glad you signed up.. I'll be running as well.
DO HILL WORK! "

So why does this come out after I register. But there will still be the 2 lb Lobster and all the shrimp you can eat at the end.

Grommit: It's a shin splint. Two inches long, located in the inner shin an inch above the left ankle. Waking up in the morning is quite a doozy as I take my first few steps of the day. Guess my PF is flaring up as well. Gosh I feel like an horse destined to the glue factory. Pain goes away after 15 minutes of running.

Stop running? Nah.. Mr Stubborn over here will just keep plugging away until the race in April. In the interim, I'm focusing more on biomechanics. We'll see what it reveals.

I've ordered Jack Daniel's, "The Art and Science of Running" on dvd and it should be arriving any day now. With any luck I'll pickup a few things so I won't end up Johnnie Walker-ing my behind to the finish line.

OH MY GOD.

Grommit, Sorry for getting you into this it's now a 24 hour time limit to finish all 6 peaks. 3 peaks in 14 hours. Lord Help me. They would change the rules a few days after we're registered. Oh well lets see how far I can go.

Hey Hugh! Anyone running outdoors today was nuts. Brutal wind. Did the TM at the Y. Three straight (ha ha) days of training.....unbelievable! Ran 9 miles in 62 minutes - which is just over Boston race pace - to test out the neuroma in the right foot. Ouch after 45 minutes. 8.8 mph with the last 5 minutes at 10.0. Highest heart rate was 170 which is about right. Hopefully it will be at 165 - 168 by Boston.

Anyone else run today? Roly. Do you like the changes?

Hi Mercury - also ran indoors, 14k for the run I missed on the weekend. On Sunday I I woke up at 4 in the morning, gastro thingy, kinda rough, wondering if I had finally bought it. Scared my munchkin half to death while I was at it, she came close to calling for help cause I passed out by my bed.

I was pleased tonight to see I could manage what I did. My pace and your pace are in two different worlds, but it felt good nevertheless. Went to the pool afterwards for some slow paddling...thought of DR - hope you are feeling better.

Now to stretch and get some sleep.

N0 running yesterday but got in 35 km on the spin bike, about an hour.

I may try to get in a run on the mountain today at 3:00pm (Off work this week, Spring Break) Since the kids will be at the movies, If it warms up.

I think those changes are just another race member trying to hype their race to get people to sign up. We will see once the race day is over.

Welcome back Gro. Why am I not surprised that your all gung ho about the new course description.

I guess this will be my punishment for missing Jay.

Got in about 6 miles in the snowy trails near home. Didn't feel like messing with traffic when I have some nice trails five minutes away. I'll be running them again tomorrow and on Saturday afternoon if anyone cares to join me.

BTW good to see Df7 getting in a nice long run. Go Fly, Go Fly, Go Fly

Thanks Roly, put in a faster 5 tonight, of course, all things being relative, this would still be a snail/slug pace for some of the folks here.... just to see how ole honeycakes would hold up... folllowed by some slow paddling in the pooool...MY QUADS ARE KILLING ME AND I'M STARVED, hah ! BUT no major creaking and groaning...oh joy, oh joy...

Okay, have had enough of this winter thing already...though kinda nice out there right now... gotta eat gotta eat gotta eat...

RUNNINGAG'S ICEPACKS HOTPACKS GIVEWAY!!!

If anyone is interested to get icepacks of all sizes and shapes, very useful for bringing food for a race out of town the day after or to put on an injury, I have about 20 to give away.

I'm in town until Saturday, so maybe at Hurley's Thursday or Friday.

If interested, just let me know here. It could be later in April.

Gag: Count me in for one. I'm downtown all the time. Allow me buy you a drink at Hurley's and we can discuss the race strategy as I head into April: 5 minute km vs 8 minute mile a treatise. As for timing after 7pm is best for me I was thinking that it would come in handy to keep my breakfast cool on race day. Storing food in the washroom sink under buckets of ice isn't ideal

Regards,

TB

COOL!!!

What about tonight at 7:30? I have also 3 coolers to give. My wife was about to get rid of all those icepacks, because it was taking all the place in our freezer. But I knew that you guys would be interested.

Thinking about it, if some of you can't go but are interested to get icepacks, I can give them to one of those who'll be present. Just place your order.

Finally starting to feel optimistic about Boston. Had a good TM workout today which saw me do a 25 minute "tempo" @ 6:20 / mile pace and it felt relatively easy. The last 5 minutes were cranked up to 9.9 mph or 6:10 / mile pace. All the while-and more importantly-was that the heart rate maxed out at 170. My estimated MHR is 185 so that leaves plenty of room for going faster. I am finally feeling some relief.

Still having mucho neuroma & hamstring discomfort but at least it's not slowing me down. Now a marathon is a whole other story, right Gro / Gomez?

Many thanks to DF, RG and Merc for the fun evening. Despite the loud jazz band we were still able to enjoy the conversation. All the best to our goals for the year. It's really nice to kick back and relax every now and then following training. RG, thanks for the ice packs. Let's hope they will only be applied to keep food chilled.

Time to turn in

Had alot of fun tonight, can't recall the last time I laughed so much, it was needed.

Gag - you're always full of surprises, Nicaragua (sp.) last week, Ottawa for a 4th time, and that crazy a$$ french marathon you were telling us about, post the site.

TB-

Mercury - how great to see you, you know I didn't mean it about your training and racing, well, maybe a bit Here is the site we told you about :
http://www.rtbrelay.com/index.shtml

Gro - hope you enjoyed your paaaarty...Mercury is now up to speed about July - thought something about a TENT - I don't think so, I'm getting a tad old for that...

And as you couldn't make it, Merc figures we'll be getting an invite soon for some delicious Thai food...seeing as you like to mess around a kitchen.

Now to figure out what to do with the longer arm..from carrying all that ice

G'night - 'fly

Thanks to DF, Merc and TB for a great evening last night. Sorry for the extra weight DF. And as TB says, let's hope you'll use it only to carry lunch.

If other coolrunners want some, ask TB or Merc. They have more than enough.

Here's the link for my fall "pure fun" marathon:

www.marathondumedoc.com

The English link does not work, but you have all info in French. Here's my favorite part:

Le spectacle de départ, les animations dans la course avec plus de 90% coureurs déguisés, animations autour de la course avec les 52 animations, les 22 points de ravitaillement, les 21 points de dégustation, les ravitaillements spéciaux (huîtres, jambon, entrecôtes, fromage, glaces, grenier médocain, etc.), et la présence de centaines d'enfants des écoles déguisés et ravis.
