Yep once the mind goes then you start wanting to run these races. jay is proving to be a bit of a logistics nightmere this year. Someone needs a crew the week before which falls into the middle of my vacation and the wife wants to vist family in NY, I have already decided on another race a little sooner than Jay, and Jay will not be at Jay this year (so I've heard). But if all comes into some sort of universal agreement I may still lbe able to run at least the half.

TB I may not be able to run Whiteface this year, It all depends on one race if I can get in shape enough to run hike and crawl it.

I read somewhere (I don't remember where-some blog), that the so-called "change of venue" for the race was only a false-rumor. According to the web site, it's the same miserable place, unless they plan to move the mountain to a different location.

Just spoke to the medical team this morning... and GOOD NEWS!

The MRI showd not one, but 2 herniated discs - right at the very base of the spine. So in order to operate, they would have to cut through the hip - not a pleasant thought. So before they did anything drastic, they took the images from the MRI to the head Imaging person for a more detailed look.

It turns out that there are in fact 2 herniated discs, but they are not putting pressure on the spinal cord. Both discs are inflamed/swollen, and are putting pressure on another nerve - which is what is causing the intermittant "lameness". The intermittant lameness, is also what seemed to baffling the dr.'s. So, because the spinal cord is not in danger, the swelling can be controlled medically (as opposed to surgically). So, he is going onto a decently strong dosage of cortical (sp?) steroids, and to be re-evaluated in one month's time.

So, there are more PB's in our future... here's hoping there are no blood tests!

Thanks for the good vibes and thoughts.

Hey Grommit, thanks for reminding me about Michael Quinion, I used to subscribe to his word-a-day...

resorting to name-calling, are we... !

Running and swimming about 4/5 times a week each these days nothing special to report but damn have you tried that walnut bread from Premiere Moisson? It's purple coloured but don't be afraid, it's normal, it ain't moldy... It's really delicious hmmmmmmm... I believe Pain Dore has walnut RAISIN bread ... hmmmm So that was saturday's food tip of the week, have a great week!

I love annoying the skiers there! Hey....we're doing X-country too. It's just that we don't have those awkward sticks on our feet and can get out of the way fast if we need to.

Too cold today though. TM at the YMCA. 11,5 miles in 85 minutes (8.0 mph). Suffering again with a painful neuroma under the right forefoot, same place as Boston in '05. Starting to get concerned. Hamstring on the left leg not much better so the run was rather pedestrian. My heart rate finally peaked at 155bpm's as I cranked it up to 8.8mph for the last 5 minutes.

2 hours on the trails in the woods near home. Lots of nice fresh snow, couple of inches on the trails. You really want to piss off the skiers run up quietly behind them and yell coming thru as you pass. I'll I heard was "Mon Dieu @!&*&....) Yes they were very slow skiers.
Now off to prepare some nice home made pizza.
So who's running tomorrow?

Argh! Just tried posting and because of an invalid password submission, when I clicked on the, "back" but to resubmit, the post was no longer there. Has this happened to anyone?

Merc: It wasn't that cold out there. Then again I credit my winter jacket and my glorified track pants with the plastic shell in the front. Remember: Plastic shell in the front is your best friend with howling winds. I recall a time when I wore regular tights and almost froze my nether regions off! Yes, too much information but I don't want you to pay the tuition I did for the lessons I've learned.

Ran outside for 1.5 hours this morning. Legs were heavy and unresponsvie. I'm really hoping that this new program that I'm that I'm followng from ptonthenet.com is worth it. I'm experiencing a pain in the lower part of my left shine (just above the foot) that I am unable to explain. It feels tender to the touch and running wise, more inelastic when comparing strides against the right leg. Hope it's nothing too serious. The only thing that spring to mind is that we run in a counter clock wise fashion at the banked track. Hmm...

Thanks for the weather update, Long run Sunday and I need to pay inadvance for the indulgence of Superbowl Sunday . Go Colts! Which team are you guys rooting for? I'll try to be at the statue for 9am.

TB

I'm not gonna be anywhere near your back door tomorow. I'll start at 9:00 am at the monument. Starting 1.5 hours before the meeting at the monument is to much for me all I need tomorrow is about 10 miles total. But if you want to meet at 8;15 am at the cemetary gates I ok with that, let me know.

Hello everybody,

after a veeeeryyy looong time, I can submit once more a race report. Today was the first race of the ASV-Winterserie taking place in my town. This is a three race series and I opted for the small series comprising two 5k's and one 10k. The large series (10,15,1/2) would have required that I increase my milage too fast.

I arrived rather late at the race area since I forgot my timing-chip at home. In Germany, you have to pay a small fee at most races if you don't have your own timing chip. Therefore, I bought a chip more than year ago, but never had a chance to use it. Still, I arrived with a bit more than 30 minutes to go. Luckily, the weather gods were with us (+7 degree and a partiallly clouded sky) and I decided to run in T-shirt and shorts (most other runners didn't). It was a bit cold until we started, but once on the road I felt good.

I started the race to far back in the pack since I had misjudged the position of the starting line (I expected it to be beneath the START-banner, although there were suspiciously few people in front of me given that 1050 people were registered for the small series [actually 883 runners finished the 5k today]. So, when the race started, I found out that the starting line was much farther than I expected and for the first km I had to run an exhausting slalom through a pack of very uncooperative runners. Due to this, I missed the 1 km sign and had no idea whether I was on pace or not. Remember, my last races were the 2005 Montreal marathon and the Dragon-run in October 2005. So, I have lost much of my pace-feeling.

Since I didn't know what was possible after my long break, I had planned to use this race to find out about my current fitness level. After a shorter trial a week ago, I set my goal to 27:30. Now, about 1km into the race, things calmed as I was now among runners of about my pace. Still, I was overtaking more runners than overtook me. At the 2km mark I finally managed to gauge my pace: 10:41 - Bingo. From than on, I was simply feeling good. I continued to run steadily during the third and fourth km and only picked up the pace for the last 1000 m. Final time: 26:40. Much better than I had dared to hope.

In retrospective, I know that I could have gone faster. But I had no intention to hit a wall during the race and I am going to find my way to my limits step by step during the next races. I am still astonished how good I felt during the race. Since I started a regular training again, I have worked on my technique and I believe that this pays off now. Running felt incredibly light during most of the race. I hope that this feeling will continue (March 3 will tell). The only sore point at the moment is in fact not a point but my shin. Most of the time everything is fine now. However, every time I run a bit harder, my right shin acts up again.

Enjoy your weekend

Ralf

P.S.: JB, I was very sad when I read about Titus. I am happy that he probably can avoid surgery.

TB: watch the banked track! I benched myself for 3 weeks in february 03 just before Boston.... doing clockwise repeats/intervals on the CEPSUM track......I used to run as much as 8 miles a couple of times a week on the track......Dah!! ....... any thicker and I'd be a tree

Merc: You're gonna have to give up the asphalt.... it hurts too much! .... you could consider some nice gentle trail runs.... jay for example.... where ever it may be

Hello everyone, chilly one today. Got out for 40 minutes as a snow squall hit (?)… it lasted until I was almost home…it was like a couple of huge pillows had burst open above my head. The sun was gone but had left some faint traces of pink and peach behind. Followed this up with some core work and early supper.

Great to hear from you Ralf, back at it… take care of that shin.

JB – good to hear that Titus can pull this off without a surgery.

Mercury – take care of the foot…

DR – thought about you this week when I finally made it back to the pool after this sinus thingy I had. I was taking my time at the end of the lane and sure enough some young chap starts in with the conversation…jeez…

TB – you may want to wear those fancy pants again in the morning - will “feel like -24” ---- bundle up people, wouldn’t want to be losing any body parts.

Chops – where the heck are you ? Saw someone this aft while doing errands that reminded me of you.

Mars - haven`t heard from you in a while, do you have time to run these days ?

Hi to everyone!

I am finishing the C25K program next week... well I am supposed to but I am not really a big fan of the too cold weather that we had lately... And I have been checking the Montreal tread for a while now, it's nice to know that Montrealers are a big part of the cool running site.

A little bit about me.. I am 31 year old, never did run in my life before novembre. But I always wanted to do it. Now I know I can do it... and I think it's amazing how our mind let us do (almost) everything that we want! I love running and I am looking forward to some nice weather to do it more!

I have a question for you all. I am looking into my first 5k race and I was thinking of doing Lasalle. Do you think it's a good run to start with? I am really slow right now but I know that I will be able to increase my speed for the end of march!

Thank you all very much...

Any

Welcome aboard Lifeany,

Big congratulations on your near completion of the C25K program, Your getting thru one of the toughest parts of running just getting started.

I am no expert and have never run the LaSalle race but from what I've heard it's a well organized and should be a great place for a first 5K.

Don't worry about speed right now concentrate on developing a strong base, building up the mileage slowly, from my own expeirence and the experiences from the cool runners trying to run to fast to soon or building up the mileage to fast will result in injuries.

Thats my 2 cents worth.

Good luck.

Roly

welcome any...... lasalle is as good a place to start as any! it's a good race, well organised and has a pretty good turn out..... it's like the first race of the season..... I've run the 10k a bunch of times.... sometimes the weather can be like a perfect spring morning and other times.....it can be like january....

and as roly says.... dont worry about the speed thing....

Lasalle is a good race, it's local, easy to get to, can't speak for the food, I think it's just bananas and stuff but it's a good solid well organized race (they've been organizing it for decades) and it'll be warm enough and most likely around 5 degrees or warmer. Besides... there's a tim hortons near by...
