2 hours of running this morning in Bois Papineau on the trails
got good and muddy (sorry Gro.)

I've been googling some hiking areas in Quebec and found some trails in Mont Tremblant that seem to be interesting to run. I'd like to organize a week-end run if anyone is interested. We can find a 15 - 20 k trail to run and follow up with a nice BBQ pinic. let me know if your interested and when would be best. I can wait until everone is all healed up and back in form.

Here are a few I found but if you have any suggestions lets hear them.

Parc Mont Tremblant

Lac Ernie to Lac des Sables to Cute aux Rats Trails: Expert, 30 km. Essentially a backpacking trail you can hike sections of it as out and backs. The trail begins at the parking lot at Chutes Croches and travels 5 km to Lac Ernie then continues 10 km to Lac des Sables with 2 particular points of interest along the way. It then takes you another 15 km through the a forested section with 2 lookouts on the way to Chute aux Rats. There is a hut at Lac des Sables.

Sentier du Centenaire: Expert, 10 km one way. This is a demanding trail that has an elevation change along the trail of 400 meters but rewards you with 9 interesting points or lookouts along its 10 km lengh. The trail follows the tops of the mountains that fall off into the winding river below.

Backpacking

The park has an extended hike in the form of the Longue Randonee Pedestre. This 74km trail includes a loop in the Lac Monroe section then a long linear section leading to the Saint Donat entrance. Their are several huts along the routes which accommodate 16-20 and are spaced 10 to 20km apart, but you still have to carry all your essentials with a few exceptions. The hike can be started from either end and includes some excellent overlooks. This is a great trail to take with a group of friends. The trail is used by backcountry skiers in the winter

I'm also a Pheonix runner. We had just about 20 of us out this AM in Ile-Bizard. Not so bad!

Seriously though, all fun, very social, bake sale almost once a week, you can't beat it. This AM was a long run through the woods. Nice and cool, great scenery, and sheltered from the rain! Maybe we'll see some of y'all out there one day.

Time to let that Phoenix flyyyyyyy!

Hope everyone is doing well. Just wanted to check in and send my regards. I've been keeping up with my reading and welcome the new presences on the board. Hope to run with you soon.

So many events coming up and at this moment it looks like I won't be running any of them. Following the 1/2 in April I decided to take some time off on the mend. The recovery is long and complicated; managing the headspace and the physio has proven to be more demanding that ever anticipated.

I'm managing the PF in my left foot and my left hamstring is tight these days. Work is fine and have recommenced running. I won't be able to attend tomorrow.

Take care,

TB

Oh poor you Turtleboy, you looked so good running up the last hill at the Ile Bizard 1/2 in April, looked like you didn't have a care in the world, when I allowed you to whip right past me. Had trouble keeping up to you, and now you're injured. Well, I hope you heal quickly. Maybe try heading to the pool, for some pool running, or even swimming, works for me. Happy mending.

As June approaches and the Whiteface uphill footrace looms near (June 4th) I found it appropriate to entice the entire crew of Montreal CR with these interesting findings...

Hi Speedy & Daski and all the regulars. Am I the only one running Ste. Therese tomorrow? It's gonna be burrrrrr, glove wearing weather. My Phoenix folks will hopefully excuse my absence this morning in prep for Sunday.

TB. No pain no gain? The pool advice was right on. Hey Gro. How's the foot/leg. Take it easy on the long run. If you or Chops et al., are running this week, let me know. Give me a ring. (except Mon./Wed. when I do the Phoenix runs)

Hi all, and welcome to the phoenix'ers as well. I probably won't join some of your runs unless you end up on the mountain. I must admit that Ile Bizzard is a little far of a commute to go for a run.

Anyway, I too have been keeping up on the reading, just not much posting... for good reason I suppose. Since I opened my last show of the season, I have been very sick for about a week now. Depending on the lungs, I might try a little 5K tomorrow (Sunday), but I won't be anywhere near in good enough shape to make the mountain. From an earlier survey... I have not been to any type of fizzio's, running or ortherwise. Maybe I should?

Anyway, this post is mostly directed to those semi-recent "new parents" ('chops, truxx, omni... and any other I might not know about.) I have a child backpack that I am not using, and tryng to sell. I am having a garage sale next weekend, and was going to offer it to you guys first. It's one of those hiking type backpacks that your kid rides along in. It has a detachable canopy great for wind or rain. Brand is infinity sport, colour is blue. Has zippered storage underneath. No rips or tears. Great padding. Has a sort of kick stand to make it possible to get on and off with only one adult. Bought 2 years ago at Sports Experts,

I have posted 4 pictures at the following link:
http://ca.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/mtldweller/album?.dir=/cd23&.src=ph&.tok=phfzSvEBloGDutEP

As I said, the canopy is removable. It also has removable sides, for an even more closed in rainy windy kind of day. The sides and front of the canopy are mesh for ventilation that the child can see through, with plastic that comes down over each section for more wind/weatherproof.

Child's harness has a chest strap, and the parent harness has a good waist belt.

It's a darker blue than it photographed!

you can email me if you have any interest, otherwise, it's into the garage sale pile.

Anyway, I don't think I have posted enough lately to deserve the honour of starting the new thread, but when someone does....

Hej Roly, I would so much like to go there with you. I hope that one day we can do something like this.

Parc Mont Tremblant

Lac Ernie to Lac des Sables to Cute aux Rats Trails: Expert, 30 km. Essentially a backpacking trail you can hike sections of it as out and backs. I do not know this particular trail in Mont-Tremblant. I always wanted to hike there, since I think that this is one of the most interesting parts of the parc. However, I never found somebody to pick me up at the end of the trail.

quote:

Sentier du Centenaire: Expert, 10 km one way. This is a demanding trail that has an elevation change along the trail of 400 meters but rewards you with 9 interesting points or lookouts along its 10 km lengh. The trail follows the tops of the mountains that fall off into the winding river below.

It's a lovely trail that is really worth the effort. However, I did not understand why it is classified as an expert trail. You can even do this with one car, only. From the end of the trail you only have to follow the main route through the parc for about 3 or 3.5 km to get back to the parking at La Sablonnière where you started.

Another nice trail in this part of the parc is the "Sentier du Toit-des-Laurentides" starting also at "La Sablonnière". Only disadvantage is that you have to get back on the same trail.

I have hiked the loop in the Lac Monroe section, twice. I will never forget the first time. Since I had been hiking there all alone for three days, I learned only two days later what had happened in the U.S. Anyway, the trail is interesting and not to hard for beginners. The fact that there are huts makes things at lot easier since you don't have to carry a tent with you. I just prepared some pictures from my second hike there.

Food advice (attention DR): If you go to Mont-Tremblant you shouldn't miss to following two places: "Le petit poucet" au Val David et "La Chaumière du Village" à St.-Agathe.

Ah, and before I forget it: If you go there between mid May and mid July, don't forget the "Off".

Two other suggestions:

Parc de la Mauricie

Some of the MtlCR might remember that last year I proposed a canoe outing there. However, you can also do some some good hiking there. There are a several short hiking trails in the parc (the longest one being the 17 km "Sentier des Deux-Criques" many of which you shold also be able to run. And there is the "Sentier Laurentien". This is a wonderful 75 km backpacking trail that takes you about 5 days. This, however, is not for beginnners. Here you are completely on your own. There are no huts, but a number of camp-grounds. The campgrounds consist of four platforms for the tents, a roofed cooking area (just roof, no walls) and a construction to hang your backpack high enough that the bears won't get it. And believe me, there are bears. One morning I found just 25 m from my tent a foot print that hadn't been there the night before.

Parc du Saguenay
Apart from a number of shorter hikes (The "Sentier-de la Statue" is a good cardio training) there is a good hiking trail from Rivière-Éternité to L'Anse-St.-Jean and further on to Petit-Saguenay. Last year I thought about running the part from Rivière-Éternité to L'anse-St.Jean (about 25km), but finally I didn't do it since it didn't fit to wel in my marathon preparation.

Food advice: Auberge des Cévennes à L'Anse-St.-Jean

Hmmm, I think I will stop here. So many memories are coming back. Maybe I should think of writing a travel guide of Quebec for German tourist.

Take care

Ralf

WOW Ralf, beautiful pictures!! What kind of camera do you have??

You should write a travel guide especially with great pictures like that! I'm still working on my photography skills... And thanks for the food advice! I will definitely keep that in mind!

On another note I found yet another race calculator/predictor on the www :

Enjoy the sun! It ain't hot out but it's definitely sunny!

Beautiful weather for a run at the mountain. But going out at 9:00 on a freezing morning was definitely not an option, 'cause I don't want to wear tights and jacket before next fall. So I'll run at around 11:30. I can't wait.

I notice that a lot of you guys are injured. So I wish you a "prompt rétablissement".

Who's part of the team that will keep the legacy alive?

Chops... In my absence, as the ol'man of Whiteface, you definitely have to organize this year's MTL CR Whiteface team!

TB... hurry up with the recovery... you only have 4 weeks to anchor the Whiteface team.

Sally... your strength on the hills shows that you are ready for this. And you'll NEVER forget the thrill of finishing this one. The mental confidence will stay with you through your IM.

Grommit, Roly, Omni... you definitely have the fitness to see this through. I do believe that you'll find this is a race unlike anything else you've done. And it's in a spectacular environment. The feeling at the end is just undescribable.

DF, Truxx... you have to be in HM shape for this. Is it time for this level of challenge?

The timing is bad for me this year, but this is a race I would fly east for.

On to other news... this is the time of year I wish I was back in MTL for my runs. Temperatures have been hitting the mid-90s on a regular basis already. I could sure use some glove weather.

No physio for me. The body is feeling really strong. But between working on my stride mechanics (such a slooooooooow process) and the cycling I'm doing (100-120 K a week right now), I'm still having trouble running over 1:15 h without needing several days to recover. I've even cut out weight training for the legs altogether to minimize the constant heaviness and fatigue in the legs. I'm rarely going over 25 K a week running right now, and I'm often barely making 20 K.

The extra cardio on the bike, and the metabolism-accelerating effects of the weight teraining are making an impact on the weight, though. Down from 220 lbs to 215. To help with running, I'd probably like to get down to a really chiseled 205. I say chiseled because I'll get complaints from The Wife if I lose in size without other muscular compensations...

That's the update from the southwest. Stay healthy, guys and girls.

The MTL CR are always in my training thoughts.

Mars

Just got back from Ste. Therese, where it was freezing for our 10K run. If you ran the 5K, you were luckier as it warmed up nicely in the 1 1/2 hour time difference. Couldn't find any CR's there. Tough course with a one K hill at the start that never seemed to end and it had to be done twice, as the 10K was two laps. Times were from 30 - 60 seconds off for everyone, from the hills alone.

Inspite all that I finished 17th overall, 2nd in my age class with a time of 39:20. Respectable. The first one K time was 4:00 minutes, so I knew that a fast time was out of the question, so I just relaxed somewhat and tried to finish in the top twenty with the youngsters. Success! Felt great though, all things considered. Basically ran each each other kilometer 5 seconds faster to break 39 minutes but floundered a bit from 7Km onwards.

The Ottawa Half is looking better at this point. I may run Laval in two weeks as a prep/training run. We'll see. No terrible after affects except for pain when I coughed or sneezed, which I did a lot of afterwards from allegies (sucking in all that O2) Had to hold my abdominals to keep from splitting apart otherwise everything is back on track.

hi, newbie here.

i am a person who used to run ages ago and is just getting into it again, interested in trail running, i have found this thread very useful, the previous posts contained great suggestions. i would be grateful for advice in how to start again slowly but surely and good trails in and around mtl (live around the lachine canal, fine to get back into it, but kind of flat) other than the mountain.

also, is anyone out there also at the beginning-again end of the range (you all sound like dedicated experts) to share runs on the mountain (or elsewhere) with until i catch up?

thanks!
