I think I'm finally getting healthy enough to run some descent times. I did an interval workout with my cross country team today, and my times haven't been that good in a couple of years. The most important thing is that my heel doesn't feel that bad. Ever since the Alaska marathon, after a hard workout or race, I could barely walk without limping. Even after the Atlanta Ekiden, I couldn't do a cool-down run because my foot was killing me. So, did anyone do the Gordon Fall Line 5K? I know Josh didn't run it, because he was at the Bleckley Invitational with me. My next race is the Peachtree City Classic 15K. I'll be looking for a little pay back from my dismal performance last year. Then, it's on to the Macon Race for the Cure 5K. ------------------ Perry My User Profile

Hey Perry, I considered running in Gordon but changed my mind and did a 16 miler instead. I'm not sure why. I think Bill was planning to run there though. My next race will be the Race for the Cure so I'll see you there. Good luck in Peachtree City. Steve

Hi Perry,I'll be heading down to Peachtree City too. It's well worth the trip from Alpharetta. I've done this race almost every year since I've lived in the Atlanta area. Michael

I turned 35 today. So, I'll be running my first race in my new age group (35-39) at the Peachtree City Classic 15K next Saturday. Michael, maybe I'll see you there. Do you usually stay for awards at the amphitheatre? In addition to my age-group award last year, I got a Runner's World calendar for running a PR. Funny, my 15K PR is 59 minutes, but my 10 mile PR (Stone Mountain 10 miler) is 58 minutes. Then again, I've only run 2 15Ks in my life.Steve, I'll see you at the Race for the Cure 5K. I'm sending in my entry today. ------------------ Perry My User Profile

I've never run the Peachtree City 15k, how is it? How'd the Jones Co. Invitational go yesterday Perry? I saw the results in the paper..but thats all I've got from it so far. Next saturday, I think I"m going to run that 5k in Sandersville...it's a nice course..I ran it last year. Josh

I'm not sure the Peachtree City Classic is all that fast, because of all the turns and quick ups and downs. But, I think it's fun to run on the golf cart paths, through tunnels, over bridges, etc.The Jones County Invitational went well. The top guys hit the mile at about 5:00 flat, but the winner only ran low 17. So, obviously they went out way too fast My top 5 guys all ran sub 20, with the first in 18:40 (all ran PRs). I'm not sure if we can beat West Laurens at Region. But, it won't be a blow out. The girls were hit and miss. Several of them are running with shin splints (from not making up missed workouts and not running on the weekends early in the season). As usual, Bleckley County ran well. I hope you do well in Sandersville. Sub 16? ------------------ Perry My User Profile

Na, I still think sub 16 is a little ways away right now. Not to mention that last year when I ran this race, I won by almost a minute, so unless some competition shows up, there wont be anyone to run with and push me, but even if there were, I dont think I'm ready for a sub 16 just yet.Just to let you guys know, I spoke to Alan sunday afternoon and he ran 2:26 at Chicago....while it's not an olympic qualifer, missing by 4 minutes, it's still a great feat and something I could only dream of running, so if you guys see him, congradulate him. So, is Alan going to try to qualify again before February?I saw that his first half split was 1:09. That's a 2:18 pace. Did he give details about how the race played out?

He is going to try again in December at Rocket City....I think I may even run it...with my only goal to be to break 2:58.He said he was on pace through 20 or 21 miles then he just lost it and started running 6 minute miles...I didn't get much more than that...but I didn't ask...but it was still a great time...just not quiet what he was looking for... I'll see you all at the Komen Race for the Cure. John is wanting to come in sub 17:00 in that one, as his XC PR is 17:02. He has State tomorrow, and he's hoping to get All State this year. Did you see that the FPD Varsity boys got 8 out of the top 10 in Region? Of course I'll be happy to get sub 23:00 for Komen! Scott------------------

I ran a 57 min. 15K at Peachtree City. Not what I wanted, but I'll take it. Didn't fair too well in my new age-group (5th), and I was 14th overall (I think).I don't think I'm ready to run a 16 minute 5K again (I may never run a 16 again, who knows). But, I plan to be in the 17 minute range at the Race for the Cure. I saw the Viking CC results. Very impressive. I hope my guys will be ready to edge out West Laurens on Thursday (our Region Championships). It was homecoming week this week, and the team was far from focused. The girls have a good shot to be Region Champs (they are unbeaten this season by Region opponents). After Race for the Cure, David and I are headed to Birmingham for the Vulcan 10K. Let me know if any of y'all want to join us. Josh, how did the Sandersville Race go? ------------------ Perry My User Profile

Well, the State meet went very well. John placed 6th overall, so he met his goal of being All State. Anna's JV girls team won the meet also, so they were both in good moods!Augusta Christian pushed the FPD Varsity girls into second place by 2 points, and Augusta Prep did the same thing to the JV boys but with 4 points. The Academy XC coach has asked me to run tether with a student at GHSA Region after I finish at Susan Komen. I'd like to help the kid out, but that's a little too much for this old man. Anyone out there feel like being the eyes for a blind runner? Scott------------------

Not a bad race Perry. Bleckley's region meet is this saturday, but I'll be in Athens at the Georgia game.As far as Sandersville, I didn't go. I've learned working with young kids isn't good for your body as far as sickness goes. I'm picking up every cold, every little virus...I came down with a cold on thursday, and I thought it would be gone in time to run saturday, but I still had a fever friday night and still woke up like I was going to go run, but just didnt' have any energy...so I didn't run. Alan said he ran 15:08 and was first overall.....second was Clint Watkins in 17:something. When is the Vulcan? I've always wanted to give it a shot, so when is it? Perry, That was a dang good pace for a 15K. Your heel must be feeling better.Scott, What kind of pace is the school runner doing? I may be too slow. See you guys Saturday. Steve

Thanks Steve. The heel problem is manageable. You shouldn't have any problem keeping up with the blind runner. You just need a pretty decent sprint finish (right Scott??).Josh, the Vulcan 10K is on November 1st You can register on race day (I plan to). David wants to drive up early that morning. ------------------ Perry My User Profile

Steve, the kid is running about a 7:30 pace at race day. I have been able to guide him, but I'm running real close to max, and I'm not always able to talk. If you can manage 7:30 at a conversational pace, you'll be fine. I'll mention to his coach if you're still interested. He and I are running 6 miles today, but we'll be at about 8:30 in practice. Our 6 miler at 8:30 pace became a 5K in 32:07. I must admit I'm disappointed in him. The coach had the meet time wrong, and it's at 9:00am. We'll be at Wesleyan then. The coach has found him a runner, so he'll be ok. Thanks for ofering, Steve. Scott

Thanks Josh. It was a real showdown. In the girls race, my ace runner, Amanda, collapsed 50 meters from the finish and could not get back up. It was scary. But, the other girls, especially one of my freshman, ran fantastic and won over Dublin by 7 points. The guys race was a work of art! My guys were trailing the masses as it started, running pace and under control. Ryan Potts of Central went out too fast (5:38) for a guy that I haven't seen break 18:30. My guys were maybe the 3rd or 4th team at the mile, but dead on their pace targets. As the fast pace took its toll on the other teams, my guys were neck-in-neck with West Laurens team at the 2 mile. Ryan Potts was still leading, but he was slowing badly. Our first and second guys were 4th and 5th overall, with the rest of the team not far behind. As everyone waited at the finish, 2 guys broke over the horizon. It was our top 2 guys, running like scalded dogs! Our next three guys had caught just about all the West Laurens guys, and I was pretty sure that we would pull it off. When the results were completed, we had won by 3 points. The guys ran great, with only 59 seconds separating our 1st from our 5th guy. You know the chant West Laurens always does before a meet? The "we run this show" chant. That's what our guys were chanting as they gathered for the Region Champ photo. It was an exciting day. This is the first time in the history of the school that both teams won Region. I hope that all the excitement hasn't drained me too much. I'd really like to do well at the race tomorrow. I haven't run a 5K since the Peach Festival. ------------------ Perry My User Profile

Congrats to John Tankard (Scott's son)!! Overall winner of the Race for the Cure 5K in Macon!!! Time: 17:11. He outran me, Clark Walker, and Kelly Sanders (who won the GISA State Meet in FPDs classification). He had never finished ahead of any of us. On a better course, he would have definitely been in the 16 minute range. I'd say he has a bright future (he's just 16, right Scott?).I haven't run a 5K in so long, I lost my sense of pace. I went out too fast, slowed the next 2 miles, and ran an 18:04. Oh well, I did place first in my new 35 - 39 age division, and was 4th overall. On to Birmingham! ------------------ Perry My User Profile

Congrats John....thats an awesome time..espically compaired to what he was running back during the summer. Does anyone know where the complete results are at, there were a few guys from Cochran there in the 10 and under age group...our HS team had region, boys finished 2nd to Southeast Bulloch, and the girls beat Southeast Bulloch to win...SE Bulloch won the girls state meet last year (or the year before)...so it was a HUGE win for our girls.I considered running the Run for the Cure, bur I went up to Athens for the very scary, dissapointing Georgia game...and I stopped at Alans house on the way up and we did a 6 miler at a little under 6:30 pace on some of those killer hills up his way...then we headed up to Athens... Next week it's on to Jacksonville, Alan and myself are going to go down to the biggest cocktail party in the world and hope for a Dawgs win....I think we're going to try and hook up and run some 5k cross country race in Jacksonville that morning before the game....Good Luck Perry at the Vulcan... GO DAWGS!! Josh ------------------ Running Stats

Josh, congrats on the Region meet! I was looking at the proposed Region line-up for next year. I see that West Laurens will be back in Bleckley's Region. We lose W. Laurens & Dublin and pick up Washington County and Spalding. Know anything about Washington County? I know Spalding usually makes it to the state meet every year. So, they may be our new competition.------------------ Perry My User Profile
