Last year I ran it in 1:18:15, so if I get 1:15:00 I'll be very pleased. Saturday I'll be doing the 12K over in Centerville, so that ought to be a good warm-up. Looks like it might rain though, and on the Indian Springs race Sunday.

Maybe we'll have nice weather for the Al Tol, Forsythia and Cherry Blossom!

Last year I wasn't able to run the Lion's Club Run for Sight, because I was coaching my daughter's soccer team. This year I was glad to be able to run it, especially as I work with blind students on a daily basis. However when I let the dog out this morning I was sad to see a light rain coming down onto the already wet ground. Nonetheless, I had comitted to run it, although another member of my family who had also done so chose to remain in his warm, dry bed. So I made the short trip down to the Galleria Mall.
It wasn't a good day for driving either, as the 18 wheelers were kicking up a lot of spray, but I got there in plenty of time to get my race packages and to stretch. I chose to jog a little in the mall as a warm-up, to try to keep dry as long as possible. There were a few hard-core folks outside warming up, but most folks just jumped up and down a few times to get ready.
The race started off close to on time, and I saw Josh heading out in front. I took off at what I thought was a reasonable pace, and watched in dismay as what seemed like half the runners passed me. I stuck to my guns, though, and was rewarded in the second mile as I cruised past a lot of them. By mile 3 I had a small pack ahead of me. Jerome Douglas, a guy with a salt & pepper mustache, and a tiny little teenage girl, who looked to be of Indian origin. We kept even for the next 2 miles, then at mile 5 they appeared to slow down a little. Able to maintain pace still, I was able to pass Jerome and the other guy, and for a few seconds was ahead of the high schooler, but she passed me at mile 6. I continued my 7:30 pace for the next 2.44 miles as she slowly distanced herself from me. I cruised under the clock with a gun time of 55:17, and a watch time of 55:13. I was very pleased with my performance, as I beat my 10K PR average pace by 29 seconds per mile for 1st in age group. That speedwork must be paying off!
Josh got 3rd overall, and James Baldwin also ran the 12K and got second in his age group. I didn't see many other Macon Tracks runners there, it seemed to be mostly a Pacers' event.
The trophy is real cool. It has a big heart stuck right in the middle of it. I got a Valentine for running in the rain!

Well, I had the same attitude as the member of your family who stayed in the bed...but Mike and I had decided on running this race a long while back...so I knew I had to go. Met Mike and we rode together...and I've been sick all week, spent friday hugging the toilet...I love working at the school, but I pick up every single virus that goes around..Well, we get to the mall around 7:30 and sign up...and head out into the rain to get in a two mile warmup...when we got done..we had about 5 mins to change and get ready...so I didn't get to stretch at all! Got to the line as they shot the gun...and off we went...Ran with Justin Parker for about half a mile with Mike and Robert Bonalia trailing...then about half a mile into it..Robert went flying by and Justin went with him..at that point the race for first was over for me...and I was just focused on getting done to get warm and trying to beat Mike. I either missed the first mile split...or it wasn't there...so I hit the two mile marker with a 10:50 split, took a right and I took a quick glance back to see Mike about 20 yards back..and Mike is the style runner that he tries to pick it up as the race goes on...so I was pretty worried that he had me. Got to the 3 mile in 16:21 (5:31)..I knew I had only slowed down 6 seconds..but I feared when I looked back he was going to be right on me...about a quarter mile later we took a left onto a pretty busy road it seemed so I glanced back to see him still about the same distance back. This road really sucked to me..because it was a straight shot and you could see for about a mile to where you had to get to next to turn...passed the 4 mile mark in 22:04 for an even slower split of 5:42, so I was dropping back pretty bad...I couldn't feel my feet anymore they were so cold..come up to a caution light where we took another left and I look back and I've actually put a little distance on Mike...about a quarter mile later we turned into a sub-division and pass some 5k runners...this area was pretty curvy with a few turns..but I tried my best not to look back and during this mile, I tried to pound away to do my best to put the race out of reach..I reached 5 miles in 27:28 (5:23 split) and I was worried the wheels were going to come off...we stayed in that sub-division for about 3/4's of a mile and when we turned out...I took a look back and Mike was no where to be seen...I reached 6 miles in 33:08 (5:40 split) and just tried to keep pushing towards the finish line...I knew the leaders were out of the question..but I never knew what Mike up his sleeve...reached 7 in 38:44 (5:36 split) and I almost knew 3rd was in the bag but wanted to push it the last .45 miles...crossed the line in 3rd with a time of 41:16....about 20something seconds off of last years time, but I guessed if you factored in the weather and the sickness...I feel like I'm in better shape than I was in last year...I think I'll find out at CRR10K...Justin Parker beat Robert..which really suprised me..I think they ran 39:19 and 39:29...and Mike finished about 1-2 minutes behind me...but had re-injured his heel....traffic controll wasn't at it's best and he said he had to step off the road and think he hurt his heel again....he was limping pretty bad...so atleast he stuck it through and finished...I was freezing after the race..so I didn't a 20 min. cooldown inside the mall and headed home for a nap...I just hate that kind of weather unless your running cross country...

2 races in 2 days seemed like a good idea at the time, but this old man, he played two, and he's paying for it right now. We (Anna, John, Kim, Winston the black lab, and I) arrived at Indian Springs at about 1:30, plenty of time to pick up race packages, and get loosened up, as Anna's Dog Jog started at 2:00. They started on time and Winston and Anna came in about 9th. Poor Winston had some problems and had to stop a few times on the course!
Bill showed up about 2:30, and looked very strong warming up. I ran the loop for a warm-up, and I could feel that I had left a lot of leg strength down at Centerville yesterday, so I figured he was going to leave me behind early. We lined up and the gun went off, and off we went. John was in 3rd place as we turned into the the park, and Bill and I were shoulder to shoulder way back in the pack. We ran this one last year so we knew we were going to have to save something for the hills on the way out. We stayed together the first mile (7:46) passing bunches of folks, and just before the turnaround I felt something slapping at my left ankle. I hopped off the course and tied my shoelace, and jumped back in. Bill had gotten a 25 yard gain on me, and my legs were really feeling the 12K from the day before. I kept him in sight, as most of the way back is downhill, and got my second mile in 7:41. Close to the end of the second mile I pushed real hard and passed him. Coming back onto the hiway, I could hear him still hanging in, and I pushed a little more, but I didn't have enough left. At the 3 mile mark he passed me, and the final 10th he gained 7 seconds on me. The final 1.1 I ran in 7:22, so I really put in negative splits, for a time of 22:53. I was quite happy to settle for second in age group, though. John won 1st overall in 18:31. Then came the wry twist. They announced the age groups backwards. When they got to the winner of the 50-54 it was Bill! He had moved up an age group and I didn't know it. I got 1st in age group 2 days in a row! Thank goodness tomorrow is President's Day and the Academy will be closed. I need a break.

2 races in 2 days is never easy...not to mention...your 10k split would be a PR...and one of the courses you ran was a beast! Your really doing to great improving....whatever your doing seems to be working....keep it up man!

Perry,

Where were you at saturday? Are you still planning on running CRR10K? What other races do you have coming up?

Josh,

Before Birmingham, I told David that if I didn't run well, I wouldn't race on the 14th. And I didn't run well at all in Birmingham.

I don't like to step up to the line unless I'm ready to race. It's too depressing to run slow times or to get outrun by guys that I should be ahead of. That's the logic that will probably cause me to retire from racing in the future (but not yet!).

I plan to run the Al Toll 5K next weekend (the 28th), then the Chattahoochee 10K, the Silver Comet 10K on March 20th, and the US Half-Marathon the next weekend. After that, who knows...

Scott,

A friend of mine at Delta ran the McIntosh Classic, finishing just behind you & Bill in 23 min. He also won the Air Tran tickets, but turned them back in to be won by someone who doesn't have Delta flight benefits.

Guys,
I've recovered well from Tybee I think because there are thoughts in my head to run the Cherry Blossom Marathon. The course is probably much tougher than the nice flat island.

Al Toll 15k, then Cherry Blossom.

I have a question for anyone having done a marathon. Did it slow you down much on your typical runs after? I seem to be slogging along. Maybe I'm still recovering.

My first week back (I'd always take a week off to recover) would always be like that...no matter how I felt as far as the run went..my times looked like I was just out there jogging around...just give it time...you'll come back a lot stronger than you were before your marathon...atleast thats how it has worked for me....

Perry,

What do you know about that US Half Marathon...I'm looking for a half marathon to run in the near future...before it gets TOO hot...and the only one I could find was that Seaside FL one..but thats the day after CRR10K and I've been set on that one for a while..US Half just seems to fall perfect...it's on a week I dont have any racing plans. I'm going to either run Al Toll or the Sweetheart this weekend in Tifton..then I'm doing CRR10K, then the Leprechaun in Dublin on the 20th...no plans any farther past that...

Perry, I remember that guy. That was a great gesture. I would have liked those tickets myself, maybe could have traded them in for air miles against my trip to the UK & Greek Islands this summer!
Steve, what are you looking at for Al Toll? After the 12K I'm thinking I ought to be able to get closer to 1:13:00 or 1:14:00 for the 15K, but then the Centerville course is pretty flat, and Al Toll isn't. We'll find out in a couple of weeks.
Perry, any idea why the 15K is masters only? I can't figure the rationale on that one.

Josh,
Glad to hear it's not just me. Frustrating though.

Scott,
I did 1:14:46 last year so I hope to do a little better. My legs aren't wanting to move very fast right now so I'll see.

The Al Toll is a masters only so the young fellas won't have to watch us old guys die on those hills. And the Geritol stations
would embarrass us.

Wow, after today's 8 mile long run I don't think I'll be doing very well at Al Toll. Way too many 9+ miles, though I was only 1 second slower coming home than I was going out. I hope the adrenaline cuts in next Saturday, or the truck that picks up the mile markers will be right behind my butt! Maybe a little speedwork next week will pick me up, but my calves are still achy after sprinting downhill for 1.1 miles at Indian Springs.
I ought not to complain, it's a beautiful Saturday, if a little windy, a balmy 61 degrees at 11:00AM.

Steve,

I can use all the help I can get. So, yes, I could use you at the finish area helping Steve Corkery or David. Let me know for sure if you can make it.

Josh,

The U.S. Half has a link from the www.rungeorgia.com site. It sounds like a pretty decent course.

I'll see all of you at the Al Toll on Saturday. Forecast: 31 degrees (brrrrr!).

I think I'm going to sit Al Toll out this year. I ran a 5k in Tifton this past saturday...and I'm taking this weekend off from racing. I want to have a really good race at CRR10K...so you guys burn (or freeze) it up for me....

Perry, I still have your medal from the MoA Relay. I'll bring it to Al Toll. Do you know if David is planning on running the 15K?
I ran the 5K course with Kim Sunday, and the guard there didn't want us parking in the IKON parking lot. Steve had said something about them not wanting us to use their building this year. Are we still meeting at the IKON building? If not, do you know where we are meeting?

David will run the 5K if he comes. Like Josh, he wants to save himself for the Chattahoochee Road Runners 10K.

I didn't know that there was a problem with using the IKON building. If we can't use it, it's going to be a cold day to be having an awards ceremony outside.

How about this weather! Getting any snow up your way Perry? Nothing but rain mixed with a little ice for us...but all of my UGA buddies are rubbing it in all the snow they are getting in Athens... I know this is miserable running weather. Did 10 miles in it last night and it might have just been the most aweful run I've had in my 9 years of running!

I can't wait til spring. This is nasty weather to try and get any miles in and I hate the treadmill. Hope Saturday morning improves like they are forecasting.

If this continues through the weekend, who's running? I will just to prove to my wife I'm insane. She thinks I'm nuts to get up at 4am to run.

See you all Saturday.

Looks like tomorrow will be a beautiful morning. By 9:00am it ought to be low to mid 40s and sunny. The high is forcasted to be 68, so by the time the old guys finish the 15K it'll be warm. Sounds like Spring!

The sun had just started warming up the world when Steve Corkery hollered "Go!" It had been really cold that morning, but there seemed to be a good showing at the Al Toll Memorial 20th Annual in 2004. As usual, a really cool long sleeved shirt that I will treasure, and for the Masters 15K at least, several runners showed up in Atlanta Track Club singlets. There was stiff competition, as I chatted with a couple of folks from the Chatahoochie Road Runners club who had also showed up for "the scenic route." (I talked again afterwards with one of the CRR members and he said that was the toughest course he's ever run)
The races started uneventfully, which always amazes me, with that crazy 2 direction start. I ran the Masters, so I know very little about how the 5K went. Bill Harrison and I started out together, and we chugged up Bass Road to Riverside, where there was a lot of traffic sitting there waiting for us to go on by. Throughout the race traffic was extremely well managed by the local police, for which I thank them. Bill lagged behind at the 2 mile mark and I set my sights on Jerome Douglas. As I came up beside him at mile 3 we chatted a little, and then I took off up the next hill and tried to put him behind me. For the next 4 miles I went back and forth with a guy in a soccer tee shirt, then at mile 7, the motor fell out of my legs. I slowed way down, and was passed by 2 guys, Then at about mile 8.9 Jerome blasted by me. I tried to catch him back, but too little too late. He got me by 8 seconds, even though my time was 1:12:22, a great improvement on last year.
I had to leave before the awards, but I hear Jerome got 3rd in age group, and he earned it. I've got to work on that kick.

Scott,
Great improvement over last year. I saw you and Bill ahead of me but the legs didn't want to get me there. You are doing something right in your training. I agree, the course is a pretty tough run and I needed that.

I learned a few things from my run which had me finishing at 1.15.02, 16 seconds off last year. I need to get back to some speed work. I have been shying away from it, afraid of injury but need to just be smarter. Another thing is the need to get more hill work in my runs. I have been doing most of my runs on relatively flat surfaces and Al Toll was not flat.

My next race(slow jog) is the Cherry Blossom 26.2 so I intend to start the hills this afternoon. Maybe a few weeks of hills will help. I'll work on speed starting a few weeks after that.

Perry,
I know you were a little disappointed with your time but I'm still impressed with those type times. Third place overall is great.

Steve
