The pain and frustration of my Alaska marathon has faded, and I've gotten the itch to tackle the marathon one more time. So, David and I are looking at running one in late March. As David chases his goal of running a marathon in all 50 states, Hawaii seems the next logical choice. Delta is shaky right now, and if something happens with my job, the cost of a Hawaii marathon goes up dramatically. Better do it now while I still have flight benefits. The question is: Do I run it easy and enjoy the scenery, or try to run it sub 2:50? I haven't run a PR in 2 years (well, except for oddball distances), so sub 2:40 is not likely. But, sub 2:50 is doable. Heat may be a factor, but I ran 2:49 in California with temps in the 70s with no problems. The key is having good support at the aid stations. In my last 2 marathons, aid was lacking and I paid for it. Well, I hope everyone's training is going well, and I'll see you in Warner Robins on the 10th. ------------------ Perry My User Profile

New Years Day I'll be at my brother's house, and as luck would have it we'll be 18 miles from the 7K in Hiram, Ga, so it looks like I'll be starting the new year out with a race. Sorta starting as I mean to continue! Anyone run that race ever? I hear it's on the old railroad, but I don't have that confirmed. My hip is still bothering me so the Museum run might not include me. It's been two weeks today since I've gotten in a good workout. I've mostly only been doing about 45 minutes on the stairstepper since because it doesn't seem to aggravate the hip.I know you guys have been through this too, so I'll vent here. I'm pi$$ed because i was in fairly good shape and did 4 20+ mile runs leading up to this race. Okay thats enough. Hope all of you are doing well and Merry Christmas.

There was ice on the windshield of my van New Year's morning at 7:30 as three of us braved the cold to run in the Hiram 7K. Luckily for us, we were in Rockmart, Ga, having celebrated the New Year with my brother, so we had a mere 20 miles to go to race. While we were registering I saw Jim Baldwin. I know he had to get up real early to make that race. Also while we were registering we kept hearing "Did we break even yet?" I guess a peril of a race without sponsors. The race had around 150 to 200 runners, very heavy in the 40-60+ age groups, but there were a few younger runners. The RD assured us that this year there would be someone at the turnaround, then he started the race. We took off down the asphalt road, then took a tight U turn onto the Silver Comet Trail. My stomach sank as we hit the trail and I saw ahead of me 6.75 Kilometers of running on concrete. The race was uneventful. A few cyclists passed us as we ran. The course was fairly flat. There were hills but they were long and gentle. The pace of the race was fast, but the surface was hard. After the race was over we had to walk almost half a mile to fill out our POF cards. I did so then went back to watch Kimberly finish, but I met her trecking up as I was trekking back. There was a professional masseuse plying her trade at the building and plenty of after race goodies, even hot chocolate, and I mean HOT! Of the Macon Tracks members that ran only one placed. Kimberly won first in her age group running a 9:50 pace and received a plaque. The Hiram 7K is a neat little local race, and I'd love to cycle the Silver Comet Trail, but running on concrete is hard on my ankles, shins and knees. Maybe next year we'll look at running the Atlanta Track Club race New Years Day. It's at 12:00 noon so there's longer to get rid of the hangover! Scott------------------

Josh, What's your goal for Saturday? Scott, Caryl Deems contacted me and said that the change would be no problem. Have you thought about which leg you would like me to run? I don't want to put any competitive pressure on Kimberly or Jim. I'll be running strictly for the pure fun of it. Steve, How's the injury? You still planning to sit this one out? Well, as I review 2003, I ran 2,672 miles. But, I set no PRs and did not accomplish my 3 New Year's resolutions. Oh well, maybe "I'm due" for a good year this year. ------------------ Perry My User Profile

Perry,Injury is not improving a lot. I took about 8 days off and tried to crank back up but the pain is still fairly bad. I can stretch well after and it relieves much of the discomfort. I am one hard headed old fart though and probably will keep running. I am itching to get involved in a race atmosphere so I might see you guys Saturday. If I come I'll jog the 5k. Good luck. Maybe everyone of you can bring home an award. Steve

Perry, I promised Jim the start, so you can have the second leg. Kim will run 3rd and I'll finish. Glad to have you aboard, I'm just glad I don't have to run 2 consecutive legs and do the half-M after all! Steve, have you considered PT? It helped greatly when I had plantar fasciatis. See you all at the race Saturday. Scott------------------

I got my application for the Macintosh Classic in the mail. It's going to be a 5K this year. Shame, as I liked the 4 mile distance. Anyway we'll be doing that one, Anna will do the Dog Jog with our black lab, and John and I will run the 5K. Last year the weather was awesome that day, hope it's as beautiful again this year. I came down with a sickness the other night and it was pretty rough on me yesterday...Mike is trying to talk me out of doin the full marathon...but I told myself I was going to do it..so I'm not going to back down...even if I dont break 3 hours...I want to finish the thing. Still going to try and run the same time goal...but not sure if the body is going to let me..I guess we'll see...but I'm going to give it a try..I ran that 4 miler last year...the weather was awesome..but the course was pretty tough..I finished 3rd behind Alan and John Tuttle...but it was a nice race...dont think I'll make it this year though.. Careful, Josh. The marathon can be a beast, if your body is not up to the task. You know you could postpone the plans and run Tybee or Calloway Gardens. I've heard that both are good courses. On the other hand, you never know... You may do fine in Warner Robins. Maybe you'll have a year like mine in 2002: I still won, even though I had one of my worse marathon performances ever. You just never know who is (or isn't) going to show up. ------------------ Perry My User Profile

I'm undecided about trying the Aviation 5k because I might run it too hard and set myself back. Went 5.5 miles yesterday with hardly any pain.My initial plans were to run the Aviation Marathon as almost a long run and then run Tybee as a race. I've had reservations on Tybee for about six weeks. This is my plan. Maybe ten miles tomorrow to see how I hold up and if that works, eighteen to twenty next Saturday. If I can survive it then Tybee will be my first marathon. There is always the half though. I am envious of you guys right about now. Wish I could be there. Scott, you and Perry should do pretty well on the relay. I know it will be a lot of fun. Josh, hope you meet your goal. We'll cross paths one day and I'll introduce myself. If I don't see you tomorrow......go get em!

Perry, Thanks for stepping up to the plate for us. I have your medal, and I'll keep it in my running bag, so I'll give it to you next time I see you at a race, or at the membership meeting. You got us up in the standings, and when Kimberly slapped hands with me we were behind 1 mixed team and the all male team. I was able to catch the Air Force captain on the all male, but I never saw the mixed runner. Oh well, no trophy for second place mixed team, but a good workout, a sweatshirt and a medal. I felt guilty passing all those guys who were finishing up the 26.2, and all I had to run was a 7.2. One of the folks giving out water said to me in a surprised tone, "You look like you just started!" I told him I had. Scott------------------

Scott,I agree about the guilty thing. As I was going by folks in the first half, I wished that I had something on my back identifying me as a relay runner. I wanted them to know that I was not competing against them, but just against other relay teams. 2nd place is good. I had fun running without the pressure of going head-to-head with my usual competition. The again, that's probably the reason I couldn't hold my usual pace. Josh, I talked to Mike after the half. He said that you were in 5th place then. I guess you ran pretty even splits. I know you wanted to pick it up the second half. ------------------ Perry My User Profile

Guys,I ran Saturday morning at about the same time(about fifteen minutes earlier) as the marathon. I kept going back between my elapsed time and the actual time so I could gauge where everyone might be. I got in a good ten mile run but felt a little depressed to not be in W.R. The weather was great where I was. How about there? Wind? Scott...Perry Great job taking second in the relay. I bet those finishers were in awe of the 47 year old screaming by on the stretch. Josh, You met your earlier goal so that was successful I hope. I'm going to Tybee February 7th if I can get in a long run this weekend. Anyone else? Later, Steve

I'll pass on Tybee. Can't decide on 1 so I'm going to try 2 races in 2 days, Feb 14th Run for Sight and Feb 15th Mackintosh Classic. Probably going to regret this and get a big "I told you so" from Kimberly! Scott------------------
