The reason we have to run the Reindeer is my daughter wants another shirt for her collection, and she knows she likes the Reindeer shirts!

Guys,
Help me with a moral dilemma.

I am planning a long run this Saturday of about 22 miles. I usually do these all over the downtown Macon area. Would it be unethical to just jump into the Reindeer run? I was thinking of joining at 1/2 mile into it and leaving at 1/2 mile from the finish. I get kind of bored running alone.

What do you think.? Would I be a despicable bandit?

Steve

As long as you aren't partaking of anything that the race committee has provided, I don't see a moral problem.

Guys, I'm afraid that I have come down with the flu. I have an appointment in the morning with the doctor. If it is the flu, this may be the end of my racing season. I'll take a break to get over it and start training for the spring.

Steve, I'd do it. There's no law that says you can't run anywhere you want to, and as Perry says, you will not be using anything that the race staff have provided, except maybe a cup of water. I'd be glad to see you!
Scott
PS, Perry, get well soon!

Thanks for the replys. I think I'll do it.

Scott, if you see me you'll be on your way back up the hill. I'll be moving kind of slow. That will be at about mile 15. Hope we pass.

Perry, that's a bummer. Maybe it's not but a minor bug and a few days off will help.

See ya'll.

Knock on wood, this may be the 1st time I can actually run the Reindeer Run. Two years ago I had plantar fasciaitis, and I walk-ran it with my daughter for her 1st 5K. We came in ahead of 2 sorority sisters and no one else. Last year I had the flu, and managed a 24:30 something. There's still time to hurt myself or get sick, but maybe I'll have a decent time for a change!

Scott, let me know if knocking on wood three times helps. I'm superstitious so I'll try it too.

I'm back from the dead... I haven't run in 5 days, and I'm chomping at the bit to get back out there. Not sure if I'll make it to Madison. I'll see how the week goes.

It's 9:19 a.m. So, the Reindeer Run and the St. Nick 5K should be over. I wish I could have been in one of them. I guess it wasn't meant to be. I am curious how the races played out, who won, who ran fast, etc.

Our race turned out to be a big of a bomb....I think the weather kept people away..we only had about 50...it was freezing...and a lot of the people who said they were going to come didn't....I finished 2nd and ran 16:38...which I'm 'kinda happy with..faster than I expected..but when I was done...I knew it wasn't as fast as I could have run. The winner was Robert Bonilla who finished 2nd in the Labor Day 5k...he ran 15:51...after me there was a huge drop...not sure if anyone broke 20 other than the 2 of us....

SEC Championships tonight...
GO DAWGS!!

I jumped into the Reindeer Run at about a quarter mile after all the runners had passed. It's different starting at the rear and passing people most of the way. I'm amazed how many people must really go out too fast and have to walk.

Scott, I saw you and hollered at you but you must have been focused. I think John was in second after the half turn. Some black guy was in the lead at that point. How did it turn out? I left the race at 1rst Street and continued my long run. I don't think I'll use a race during a long run again because my pace picked up more than it should.

Is there an Al Toll race this year?

I probably wasn't so much focused as I was hurting! I died on the hill on the way back. At 2 miles I had 14:30 and finished 24:06.
John's race was pretty awful too. He had gone to the rest room and missed the start by a minute. He still came in 3rd. With the head start he gave Clark Walker, there was no way he could catch him! His 1st mile was sub 5:00.
Well, Madison will be a lot more fun. It's uphill on the way out and downhill on the way back. Also we'll have some attractive scenery there. The Reindeer Run would have a lot more participants if they ran up through Mercer and back instead of the industrial estate. I know that traffic is lighter down there, but it sure is the ugliest part of Macon we get to run through.

Perry & Josh,
I remember seeing you guys post some on piriformis. I need some insight in you don't mind.

I was running intervals this morning and started having a pain in my butt right around the wallet area. I was nearly through so I continued with a few more 400's. I can hardly walk without a lot of pain now.

Does this sound like your symptoms and how long to get over it?

Piriformis is painful deep in the crease where your butt meets your thigh. It's kind of hard to pinpoint. It does take a while to heal. I guess I stretched for about a year before it completely went away.

It never hurt really bad. It just made it difficult to get a full stride. The stretch that was most effective was to lie on my back, cross one leg over the other in a figure 4, reach through and grab the front of my shin, and pull for 30 seconds each leg.

Have you checked out info on sciatic nerve pain? I've heard that that is more painful and sudden. Just a thought.

Scott, David is doing the 5K in Madison. Does it follow a portion of the 8K course? I think I'm well enough to give the 8K a shot.

Steve, There is a stretch I do for the piriformis that helps. I lie on my back and I pull my left knee up and over to the right, letting my foot drop as close to the floor on my right side as I can, while looking left (it's my left wallet pocket area that hurts). I hold this for about 2 minutes and it helps a lot. I stretch the other side for balance too.
Perry, I've never run the 5K there, but I would imagine that it would be part of the same course.

Thanks for the replys. I'm feeling a good bit better today but plan on laying off for a couple days. Maybe it's just overuse but I will be stretching more.
Two or three days off shouldn't hurt my marathon plans too much hopefully.

Scott, during the 5K race John passed me at MLK I think. I was still well back in the pack and was wondering why someone moving at that pace started so late. He must have run a good watch time.

As mad as he was, he was motoring. I don't know what his chip time would have been, but it was way down there. He'll never make that mistake again. Sometimes learning the hard way is the only way!

Steve,

As far as my piriformis goes...it's my right hip...and I've had it since June..and I still haven't got over it 100%...somedays it hurts..so days it doesn't...all I can say is stretch stretch stretch!!

As far as missing the start of a race...I've done that a few times myself...teaches you a thing or to..but it also helps you run a fast time...I've ran a PR doing that...I've since then broken that pr..but it was a pr at the time.

Good luck to all the Madison Christmas Rushers tomorrow. Bill said he'd be there, and David's supposed to run the 5K. My daughter will run that too. Kim, John and I'll run the 8K. Jason from Coolrunning said he'd be there. Jim Baldwin's coming up too. See you at the hot cider stand!

Is this a good race? I've been thinking about it today..and I might go. Not 100% sure on that..but I may. I've never run this one before so I was just wondering if it was a good race.

Thanks

It's a good race. The start is somewhat late, but that's an advantage if you have a long way to travel. The course is gently rolling, and the people are very friendly, serving hot vegetable soup and cider after the race. There was plenty of food and power bars for all. The shirt is classy, longsleeved, with a sweatshirt option or a no-shirt option. It's one of my favorites and I like the 8K and 5K combo. They did have a problem in the 5K with no 2 mile marker, but the 8K had accurate splits called every mile.

I just posted the Will Robinson and Reindeer Run results on the website, if anyone wants to check them out.

I'm going to take a break from speedwork and racing the next few weeks. The Madison race definately showed that I need a break. I'm also leaning toward the 5K in Warner Robins, instead of the half.

Perry,
Please tell Christy that I got her application and check and that the application is submitted. Kim will call her to find out where in the rotation she wants to run, but I'm thinking Jim ought to start us, Kim and Christy do second and third, and I'll finish up. I'm thinking we ought to make a sash like in Ekiden!
