Spencer, I'm sure you know this, but apply RICE to your ankle. (Rest, ice, compression, elevation.) And lay off the basketball if you want to do a half. Scott keeps doing that too, and it almost always hurts his training. He loves basketball, though.

Back before I realized that I overpronate, I was training for the Callaway half. I showed up for the race with shin splints, achilles tendonitis, ace bandages up to my knees and a trunk full of ice packs. Needless to say, it wasn't my best performance. On top of the injuries I brought with me to the race, I lost three toenails because the stability shoes I bought a week before at Dick's didn't have enough room in the toebox. Perry & Josh have since straightened me out, New Balance clown shoes notwithstanding.

Point is, listen to your body & take care of it. You'll still be able to reach your goals; you've got time.

You guys do realize that Lake Blackshear is infested with alligators don't you??? I heard that there are a lot over there this year. My in laws went jet skiing over there and said that it is no joke. So that is just a word of warning for everyone to take note on. Good news on the ankle!!! I can walk pretty normal after one day. It only hurts a little and now I have a four day weekend to rest it before I start my training next week. I have already been hooked up with good shoes from the store and it does make a world of difference. Before I had back pain and knee pain....the shoes changed all of that. Alright then....my next goal after this half-marathon is to buy a bike and start preparing for triathalons. I had a chance to but a really nice racing bike for 500 dollars but I passed it up and now I am regretting it. I found the same one online for 1700 dollars....the guy said it was a deal but I passed on it anyway.

I'm aware of the alligators at Blackshear, my family has a place there and has ever since I was born. I've seen tons of them, but from what I understand, they do the swim at the beach part of the lake which is pretty much open water and I don't think there is a real threat, not to mention, all those people splashing around in the water, I think the gators would be going the other way. Plus, it's a short swim, so you won't be in the water that long, and the park/camp ground area over there is pretty flat, should be a good one.

Good Luck to everyone doing Peachtree, I'll be there, and I'll also be working at the Expo, so anyone who goes, stop by the Reebok booth and say Hi.

Josh,

That does make sense on the alligators being afraid of all of the splashing people. I am going to have to buy a bike soon so if anyone knows a good place to get a good deal at then let me know. How does the transition work?? They always make it look so easy on the TV but I always thought it would be difficult to make the changes. Do you have your shoes tied already...do you run bike and swim in the same thing??....give me the low down.

Yeah, I guess 1/2 mile in alligator alley won't be that bad - it'll probably make me swim faster, huh?

A friend of Scott's is the father of one of the kids who works at Bike Tech. He said the 2006 bikes come into stores at the end of July and that the old ones get marked down really low, kind of like with cars. Try waiting a month & you'll be more likely to get a good deal. The bike store on Watson Blvd in WR gives better service, but I don't know whether the prices there are better or not.

We did both races at Wrightsville this morning & it was a lot of fun. Even though they're going to do Peachtree, Amber N. & Angela ran both of them as well - I was really impressed! We all went to Cracker Barrel afterward & put back all the calories we burned off, though. Let me see...100 cal/mi times 9.3 miles...yep, I'd say Cracker Barrel pretty much took care of that. Oh, well.

As the MTRC team is very new, I don't think anyone is on it yet, but Alan can get on any team he wants whenever he wants!

Alan's not running for the ATC anymore. But, Scott's right, he can make the standard for any team in Georgia.

Hey, I made the 35 - 39 ATC team standard (34 min. 10K)! Unfortunately, I was only 33 at the time... I guess they slow the times down for a reason. I'm just having a hard time coming to grips with the whole aging thing...

I hope everyone does well at Peachtree or at least has fun. I'll be watching the Peachtree at home for the first time in 10 years (sore heel). That's what I get for training like I'm still 25...

Hey, Perry - I just saw Josh on TV! They were interviewing Lorna Kiplingat and I could see Josh in his Run Fit singlet walking behind her, so your advertising strategy paid off, huh? You got an FSN commercial for free! (Well, almost free, anyway.)

It's just KILLNG me that I didn't do it this year - I don't know what I was thinking. I suppose I just had a slightly negative memory of it from last year because I actually tried to get a PR or something, which is kind of useless at Peachtree (at least for us mere mortals.) Mostly what I remember was just being SO incredibly hot - I made a beeline for every sprinkler I saw. I think it was because of the time group I was in - everyone stayed so close together that their body heat just radiated. Plus it was very sunny last year, unlike today! With what they're saying about the nice cool weather today, I'm just kicking myself.

I think next year I won't even send in a qualifying time - I'll just stay back in the party group and soak in the atmosphere. I mean, what's the point of me trying to compete there anyway? I'm definitely no Kenyan. I'd rather just have a good time in this one. Last year I said it felt like Mardi Gras for runners - life's too short, so I might as well enjoy any parties I get to attend, right?

This year I had to drive in from Macon in the AM, so it was up at 3:00 AM and met with Angela (who drove), Amber N & Kimberly. We got to Marta without any problems and I got a chance to warm up some in a parking lot before heading to the corral in plenty of time. Met up with Mary Katz who took off like a teenage Cross Country runner doing to 1.5 miles. I hung with her for 3 miles and then the hills happened and my 170 poung frame wasn't able to chase little Mary any more.
Splits: 7:15, 14:21, 21:12, 29:34, 37:45, 45:17, 46:50.
As you can see I slowed way down at miles 4 & 5, but that's where most of the hills are and also I started walking the water stops. My goal was to set a PR by breaking 47:30, so you can see I managed with a little to spare, but I didn't leave anything out on the course. 90% humidity and 78 degrees!
Happy 4th of July to all. God Bless America!
Scott

Scott forgot to mention that we found the worst Waffle House in Georgia (worst in terms of service, not food).

Kimberly and I ran Peachtree together at a much more *ahem* comfortable pace. 1:04:18. Even so, we didn't score any in-race goodies. Scott got an eye-popping orange long-sleeve t-shirt, and Angela picked up a couple of headbands and patriotic wristband.

A good time was had by all.

Glad y'all had a good time. Looks like Perry reconsidered as well.

Hey Scott, I was looking at the 1-500 masters & found this guy:

Is he a relative maybe?

Hello Everyone,

It is nice to see that there are runners everywhere, and especially near Pooler, GA! Well, Macon is not too far away at least.

I am a 25 year old male who has been running on and off for a little over a year now. When I first started running I was doing great and pushed through all the soreness, fatigue, and so fourth to discover just how great running can make you feel. Of course I was very new and compared to many of you my milage and speed was probably not significant at all (running three miles non-stop was the most I was able to accomplish), but the running really started to help me in many different ways. It made me feel better physically, emotionally, and mentally. However, I went down to Florida with my previous employer to do hurricane relief for a few stores that were severely damaged. Guess what happened? I sprained my ankle, didn't realize it at the time, kept working, and by the time I got back home it was ballooned to a huge size. It took weeks of physical therapy for it to be right again.

Anyway, after that I stopped running for a while, scared that I would injure it. Then when I did start running I had lost everything I had worked so hard for so I gave up.

Now I have been running for a couple weeks and plan to keep on running, and running, and running!

You know something I have discovered? Very few people really want to be running partners! I have asked people at work, school, church, and elsewhere but they really don't seem that interested.

So I have just been running by myself. But I hope to convince a few of my fellow co-workers to go running with me sometime soon.

I wish I lived in Macon so I could go running with you guys sometime!

By the way runaway girl, that is a very nice picture in your profile! You look very, very fit and athletic! Keep up the great work!

Membarious, I was going to suggest that you join us for a long run on a Sunday morning, but I think it would be quite a drive for you. Savannah Striders Club has group runs that would be a bit closer to you. Click to take a look:
http://www.savystrider.com/pages/where_to_run.html

I think we all know how dificult it can be to find running buddies. I've finally been able to create a few of my own among those in my fitness program at work and I finally got one in my family, but it took a loooong time and lots of convincing that they don't have to go fast. Having the support of a local running club makes a big difference.

Oh, and thanks for the compliment on the pic - I got lucky on that one, the sun wasn't quite up all the way yet that morning.

Does anyone know if there will be any Saturday training for the Labor Day Road Race? I seem to need the group speed work to get me going.

For those of you who are scrupulous about exact mileage, I just found this link in the Newbie Cafe.

http://www.sueandpaul.com/gmapPedometer/?centerX=-85.55478572845459¢erY=42.79659728465777&spanX=0.02785205841064453&spanY=0.017949300751681108&zl=2&polyline=

It's a hack of the google mapping software specifically designed for runners and walkers to measure their routes. I've already wasted a bunch of time geeking out on it, and it seems pretty accurate.

Steve,

I decided not to try and organize the In-Training sessions this year. With so much going on at the store, I wouldn't be able to do an effective job to make it successful. I'm not sure if anyone else in the club would be willing to organize them. Maybe we can revive them next year.

The director of the Fuzz Run in Covington just e-mailed me about offering a discount to Macon Tracks members for the race. The race is on Sept. 10th and is on the Run & See GA series. It has won the Georgia Runner magazine "Best Race in GA" for 3 years.

We have to send the entries in together. The discount is $3 off per runner. So, if anyone is interested, come by and register at the store and I'll send the entries in together (hey, that also saves you 37 cents on postage!).

Hi, this is Natalie Bush. I'm wondering if someone might have some suggestions for speed workouts. I know you all are excellent runners and I trust your opinions to be quite accurate.
I seem to be lingering around a 20 minute 5K. The fastest I've run in a time trial is 19:56. I would really like to be in the 19:30's before cross country season begins (so I might be able to win.) Right now I do strides after every workout. I do hill repeats, mile repeats, and distance runs. 30 seconds is a lot to knock off of my time, but I'm determined. Is is possible to do this in two weeks' time? Please, if you have any suggestions, let me know.
Thank you so much,
Natalie
