Does anyone have any idea when the Labor Day road race website will be updated? I know the race flyer directs people to the website, and I had a question about it from someone at work.

Also, is anyone going to the Magnolia 4-mile run at the Perimeter mall next weekend? I'll be driving up to run it with a friend who lives in Atlanta, so if anyone wants to carpool, let me know.

Perry,

My heel is hurting me too and I am considering taking some time off to recover. I rested it for the most part when I was on vacation and it didn't hurt until I started running again. It doesn't hurt when I run but it hurts after and in the morning. It is not an intense pain.....just an uncomfortable feeling. Any ideas what it might be. Should I get it looked at or just deal with it?

Perry,

I have yet another question for you!!!!!!! I am going to be training pretty hard from July 4th to Sept 17 (race day). Do you reccommend winding it down at some point or do I continue right through until race day?? I would think that one would, at some point, take it down a notch in order for muscles to recover. I am thinking that the last week would be sufficient......if that is the case....what kinds of runs would I do in the last 1 or 2 weeks before the race in order to maintain?

Anything else I need to know about running here? Any other information you want to pass along to a new running Maconite like me.

Thanks.

Hi! Welcome to Macon. The racing season is pretty much over here in town, but there are many group runs you can join in on.
1) The Triangle Sunday Morning Run. 7:15 am at Rivoli Rd. All paces, all distances. There are folks who run 2 miles out and back at 12:00 pace all the way up to some who run 12 miles at 8:30 pace or better. The longest established group run in Macon. Water stops provided.
2) Wesleyan Morning Group. 5:45 am at the parking lot at Wesleyan college on the corner of Forsyth & Tucker. Tuesdays 5 miles, Thursdays 6 miles (sometimes). Pace about 9:00.
Ask Runawaygirl about the Cemetary run.I have heard about it but know little.
Hope this is some help.
Scott

I think some of the Geico folks run on Wednesday evening at Rose Hill Cemetary.

I've unfortunately never done it with them, but there is a GEICO group that's been running at Rose Hill cemetary on Thursday afternoons at 5:30. Not sure they're doing it this time of year, since that's the hottest part of the day.

Rose Hill is one of the oldest cemetaries in town and a pretty historic place - take a look at it sometime. It's just off Riverside Drive near Spring Street. You'll be able to tell immediately that it's pretty serious hill training, and not nearly as creepy as it sounds.

Just confirmed - 5:30 on Wed or Thu. Just call Gary at 744-5260 by 4:00 on that day to confirm before you head out there.

Don't forget the group run every Wednesday evening at Run Fit Sports, we try to get out of here at 6:15, but it is usually about 6:30 before we get out and get going. All levels of runners, just depends on what your looking for.

Spencer,

You may have a touch of plantar fasciitis. If you stretch your calves a lot and make sure you have good arch support, maybe it will go away. If it gets worse, as mine has, you'll have to really back off to get the inflammation under control.

Yes, I would do a taper before your goal event. I usually do my last hard workout 10 days out (3 x 1 mile at 5K pace). I cut the mileage 25% the first week and 25% more the second week. Of course, what works for me doesn't always work for everyone. During the final 9 days, I do a lot of strides and some short intervals at goal pace to get the body programmed to run at that pace.

Perry,

Hey good news.....I took saturday and sunday off and on Monday I felt a whole lot better. I even had a really long run on Tuesday and I still don't feel any pain. It just dissapeared....it had been bothering me for almost a month but now......it is gone!!! Thanks for the tips. I might need some more before this is all over with. I am starting in July with intense training. Right now I am just building up in preparation for more miles.

Ok, Perry – what’s it take to join the team? You said you’re a little more flexible than Kyle & his lofty standards. Here’s my current PR list:

5K 23:36
10K 48:29
½ marathon 1:54:04
Marathon 4:14:34

I've won my age division often enough, that is unless April Beck shows up. (Is that girl ever gonna have a birthday?) And I’ve been 1st overall in a few:

Macon Challenge 10K 10/04
Callaway Gardens 5K 1/05
Battle of Byron 5K 5/05

There might be one more, but this is what I could think of off the top of my head. I keep track on my race bibs and they’re all on a hook back at my office.

Ok, I know I pretty much suck, but I also know I can do better if I have something to reach for besides a stupid age division trophy. Just give me a goal to shoot for and I’ll work my tail off. Scott’s the same way – just needs a reason to train. No wait, we’re talking about Scott here, I should’ve said “practice.” His 5K PR is 20:39, but I’m not sure about the other distances for him. Don’t do us any favors because we’re customers, though. I want this to be totally legit, otherwise it’s like finding out somebody let you win – just plain embarrassing. So just tell me what to do, coach.

Well, there is a rough standard for the guys team, and that's to break 17 min. for 5K. For the guys Masters team, you need to be able to break 19 min. We really have not set a standard for the women. Amy has run 18 min. and I believe that April has run 21 (right, Kyle?). We have no Masters women on the team.

That being said, obviously we can't put everyone on the team, or the store would go broke giving out store credits. So, I typically discuss prospects with Josh (the team captain) and with other active team members.

The purpose of the team is advertising and promotion of the store. Right now, we're over budget on advertising (we've spent about $16,000 over the past year). So, Josh and I will discuss the team status tomorrow and weigh the options on adding new members.

But, if you run under 17 for guys and under 22 for women, we'll definately take notice...

I see what you mean. Wasn't aware of store credits and all that - just wanted something to shoot for, no freebies. Until you mentioned it, I never even noticed that the MTRC team includes reibursement for travel & stuff.

As far as requirements, this is what's on the MTRC site for women:

Women’s Open Team Standards:
Distance A Team B Team
5K 19:30 21:59
10K 40:30 43:59
½ Marathon 1:30:00 1:45:00
Marathon 3:15:00 3:45:00

Qualifying time for Scott's age div in the 5K is 18:50. So I guess what you're saying is that the RunFit team has the same qualifications at the MTRC team, then. No problem - I must have misunderstood you, perhaps you were just joking that day. Wouldn't want to embarass the team, and I'm certainly not looking to get something for nothing.

Well guys, I guess I'm no longer JUST a runner. I finished my first triathlon yesterday at Callaway Gardens. I finished 21st overall and 2nd in my age group. If only the run had been longer....haha

Congratulations, Josh. I knew you'd do great. How was that water? Suni Heaton was just telling me yesterday at the triangle that it's usually pretty muddy, making it hard to swim.

Yeah, the water was kinda muddy and nasty, but I don't think I ever put my head under the water (which I know isn't the right way to swim), so I guess I can't really say either way. Still, it was a lot of fun.

I want to get into triathalons as well. It it something that i have been aiming for for a long time but I just never find the time or money for that matter. I think as soon as I run my half marathon in September I am going to get into triathalons or at least start training for one. A couple of years back I wanted to do the iron man one day but that dream has been put on the back burner.

Scott and I are registered for the Beach Bum Sprint Triathlon in Hilton Head on July 30th, but we signed up before we realized that the entire race is on the beach and in the ocean! We knew about the swimming part, (duh) but it looks like we'll be running & biking on the beach as well. We're waiting to hear from the race director to find out whether to bring mountain or road bikes, so it should be an adventure.

Wanna join us?

Just found out mountain bikes will work just fine - the beach will be flat & hard (low tide.) Good news for me because I have a good mountain bike, but no road bike yet. Whew!

By the way, I just checked the standards for ATC's competitive teams out of curiosity. Perry & Kyle are going waaaaaaaay easy on us slow-pokes! Thanks, guys!

Yeah, I asked someone about the Beach Bum Tri and they told me on Sunday that it was all on the beach, including the run and bike, so I guess count me out for that one. I might tri (haha, sorry, I couldn't help it) the one in Carrollton on the 17th of July and the one at Lake Blackshear in August.

And about the ATC Standards, they are pretty tough, I've yet to meet them myself, but I"m still trying.

Alan's the only person around here that I know has made that team.

Just out of curiosity how much does it cost to sign up for most triathalons?? I jacked up my ankle today. I am really upset because I was only a few days away from training for my half marathon in September. I was playing basketball and just came down wrong on it. It is a little swolen and I am hoping that a few days off will be good enough but there is no telling if it is bad quite yet.

We're planning to do the Veteran's Memorial Tri at Lake Blackshear, too. From what I've seen so far, avg registration fee is $45-$55, but if it's a USAT sanctioned event, you'll need to pay an additional $9 every time unless you become a USAT member. Scott has - it's just $30 per year, and it pays for itself after you've done a few tri's.

You know, there's one in Destin on August 27th. Anybody feeling REALLY brave? If you're attacked by a shark during a triathlon, do you think you deserve some kind of honorary award, like a purple heart or something? How about a purple wetsuit, bike and racing flats?

I found a good triathlon calendar:
