Well...it looks like my racing season is about to get started... with two different goal races.

May 1 - Knotty Pines 5k - Swainsboro (ran this race the past 3 or 4 years..money 3 deep..won it last year)

May 22 - Run Americus 5k - Nice fast course

May 31 - Celebrate America 10k - Alpharetta OR
Bulldog 5k - Athens

June 5 - Torture Trail 10k(I hate this race, but I hate to miss it)

June 12 - This one is a maybe..but Peach Festival 5k

July 4 - Peachtree...this is one of my goal races..and that goal is to break into the top 100...something I've never been able to do!

Sept 3 - Michelin Midnight Flight for Sight10k - Anderson SC..I've always wanted to do this race..but I might not do it this year...read next race below

Sept 5 - Labor Day 10k...this is my second goal race..I want a PR on this one! Break 33mins

Sept 18 - Briar Creek 10k - Sylvania ...very small race...usually only about 25 people..and they give GOOD money 3 deep in Overall and Masters...won this race the past three years...

So thats what I got coming up...looks like an even mix of 5ks and 10ks...with goals in mind of winning a little $$ and breaking 33 for the 10 and breaking 16 for the 5...we'll see how things go...

I'm running the Hartwell Dam Run this Saturday, then the 5K in Perry next Saturday. May 29th it'll be the Georgia Games. I'll be out of the country for 3 weeks in June, so I'll miss Torture Trail and Peach Festival. There's a 10K in my parents village but I'll miss that by 2 days! Bummer. I'd love to have raced abroad!

Hot Time in the City......
The city of Covington, that is. There was no race in Macon on Saturday, April 24th, and the “Covington YMCA Healthy and Happy Kids Day 1 Mile Fun Run and 5K Run/Walk” was at 3:00pm so we signed up for a family discount (4 runners for $40.00) and dropped it in the mail. Then we watched the Weather Channel in dismay as the forecast predicted temperatures in the 90s for that particular day!
The big day arrived, and it was a busy one. John had a State Qualifying meet that morning, and he was running the 3,200 meters. He qualified for the State in his meet, and after a light lunch we took off for the other race. The drive took a little over 90 minutes, and we arrived with time to spare. There were some festivities planned, with the local police and fire departments and other local organizations. The police had their DARE program Dodge DAREango on display, and there were several fire trucks also. There was music and also an aerobics instructor to warm up the crowd. The mercury kept climbing as we approached the 1 Mile Fun Run and one of the fire trucks set up about 200 yards from the finish chute and laid out one of its hoses. The 1 Milers took off and when they finished, they got a good cooling off.
Half an hour later the 5K lined up. It was about 90 degrees and there was very little shade. I was chatting with a woman who was going to attempt to run it with her daughter, despite at pack a day plus habit. I didn’t see her after the race, so I don’t think she finished!
We took off and I noticed that John was out in front from the start. The first mile wasn’t bad, and there was a slight breeze and also a little shade. Most of the runners took the shady side of the street, even if it wasn’t the same side that the turn was on. Mile 2 was about the same, with the option of shade and a fair breeze, but mile 3…… Well, the breeze died, there were no trees, and that last mile marker just wouldn’t appear. Then finally when it seemed like they had lost the 3 mile marker, there it was. Then we turned right into the fire hose, and got soaked. It felt ok, except now my dry-fit shirt weighed about 5 pounds. Two teenagers kicked past me in the last 0.1, but I didn’t think they would affect my age group place, so I'm ashamed to admit I just let them go.
I met back up with John and found that he had come in second overall, for 1st in his age group. I made 1st in the 45-49, and Kimberly took second in her age group.
The festivities continued, with free fruit and Propel while the supplies lasted, which wasn’t very long after the kids discovered it. The awards were a little different from the usual. The adults got plaques and the kids got trophies, which I thought showed some forethought. We had a good time, even if our times weren’t as good as they would have been in a morning race. For a small race it was well organized and the course was well marked and thought out. They had plenty of sponsors, and that makes a difference. I recommend this race if it comes around again, even if the name of it is almost as long as that doggone 3rd mile!

Looks like a good race for everyone..I saw the results on runningintheusa.com and you guys times were pretty good. It can be really tough running in the rough heat..espically when it's one of the first days it gets up that hot...even though we're from the south..I still dont think you can ever really get used to running in the heat...just my opinion though...the great thing is..we just got a new wellness center at the college...and being a student I get to go for free...so I'm in treadmill heaven...not to mention...we have an indoor ruber track...

First race on the list is tomorrow..I'll post how it goes..although I know Alan is going...in fact..I think we're gonna meet up and ride together.

How did all the races go this morning? The one in Macon was WET. Only 10 people showed up! They went in the hole big time for a race that was supposed to raise money for a worthy cause. They must have ordered 100 T-shirts and they had to pay the city $360 for traffic control (I saw one car the entire race).

I ran through the puddles to win in a lackluster 17:45. I was never challenged. David was second in 20+ minutes. He missed the final turn. Afterwards, he told me "this race never happened." He said that I should type in "Karl Hungus" in the results in his place. But, I don't know about that. Karl usually runs quite a bit faster than that (right, Josh?).

I'm tapering my mileage for May and spending more time trying to get the store up and running. I can't seem to focus on my training as much as I need to in order to race well. I guess my priorities have shifted.

The best dam run anywhere....
So said the flier, so Kimberly and I decided we'd see for sure. The Lake Hartwell Dam Run is on the state line between Georgia and South Carolina, and the 5K and 10K runs both include both states. The flier shows a gradient map with one slight dip on an otherwise flat course for the 10K and a perfectly flat 5K course. The route was out US 20 across the Savannah River into South Carolina to the 5K start and then back into Georgia across the Hartwell Dam. We signed up for the 10K, and then the Weather Channel started threatening rain for race day. No idle threat either!
8:30 am in Hartwell, Georgia. The rain had stopped, finally, and the 5K runners had been shuttled to the 5K start in school busses, and about 150 runners were ready for the 10K start. James Baldwin was there as well as Michael Selman from the Chattahoochie Road Runners, and a few other familiar faces from the Run & See Georgia circuit. The two races were supposed to start together, which would give plenty of time for most of the 5K runners to be done by the time we 10K runners got to South Carolina. We took off downhill, as expected, and ran about a half mile then a half mile uphill. "There goes the dip," I thought, then I saw the real "slight" dip. What we had covered didn't count as a hill, I guess. We headed back downa steep hill to the bridge over the Savannah River, and there, perched on the rail, was a bird of ill omen. A buzzard was sitting there watching all the runners. I thought it was funny at the time, but later on I was halfway expecting to see him again.
Uphill we went from the bridge, and a long hill it was. Right at the top was the 2 mile marker, and by the reactions of the runners, none of us had made the time they had wanted to on the second mile. The course leveled off to slight grades from here on out, but there was no 3 mile marker, and when we hit the turnaround we had no splits called, just a warning that the yellow line was slick and not to step on it.
Now we ran back past the oncoming runners and headed onto the dam walkway. It stretches 2.5 miles including the dam itself. It was mostly flat, but by then the humidity and the hills had taken their toll, and the run was becoming hard work. Miles 4 and 5 gave disappointing results, but a great view of the lake and the river from the dam.
After mile 6 the course was full of 5K walkers going my direction and folks cooling down from finishing both races going the opposite one. Quite a lot of dodging was required, but then finally the dam run was over.
It's not a bad race. Now I know what to expect I'd like to run it again. The map was misleading, but that's to be expected. The weather was bad, next year it could be better. The race was well organized, with the exception of the missing 3 mile split. Who knows, if the sun had been shining it might have been the most scenic 10K in Georgia and South Carolina.

By the way, though I was disappointed in my time of 47:41, it was a PR for the 10K.

Perry,

Karl might not mind if you used the name...but can you play the role of a porn star.?? haha Any other big things going on with the store?

Scott,

I've always wanted to go do that race just so I could have that shirt..."The Best Dam Run"...and what a nice shirt it must be.

As for my race...if thats what you want to call it. I finished second in Swainsboro behind Alan...it was pretty warm...mid 70's and the rain had just stopped..so it was sooooo muggy...First mile was alright..althought a little to slow for what my first mile usually is...thats when I knew I was in for a long day. The wheels just fell off the farther into the race I went...final time of 17:18...worst 5k since November of 02...not really sure what the problem is right now.

My check cleared, so I'm in Peachtree. Hopefully my sub 50:00 time at Labor Day will get me ahead of the folks who are just in it for the atmosphere. Also, maybe the plastic cups won't be so much of a hazard this time through! I'm excited now.

We had fun in Forsyth Saturday. I got a PR on the nice easy course, and even though there weren't a lot of runners, I think the Legal Eagles may have raised a little for the Relay for Life. Perry won the race and Amy Boyer won the ladies, way ahead of me. Cool new race.

Josh,

David wants to run the Americus race and wanted me to ask you about the course. Is it really flat? I'm planning to run it too.

David, Bill, and I will be headed down to Albany on Saturday. I'll be running the half. They will be doing the 5K. Anyone care to join us?

It's being held at the Marine Corps base and it's called the "Run for Relief." The guy I talked to at the base said that the courses are flat. The half starts at 8 am, and the 5K starts at 8:20 am. $15 race day registration.

We are talking about meeting somewhere on Eisenhower Pkwy. and riding down there. We'll have to get an early start (meet about 5:30), as I'd like to be there at least by 7:15.

Scott, any chance we can take your van? If not, David or I can drive one of our Jeeps (either seats 4).

Scott,

I was thinking the Wal-Mart parking lot near the I-475 interchange. I'll confirm with David & Bill and get back to you.

Josh,

The Saucony order is in. Check your e-mail.

I talked to Steve Corkery and the official Georgia Games is not going to happen. However, there will be a 5K run/walk that day with my wellness group and any other Macon runners who wish to participate.
So, come one, come all to the Central City Park at 8:00 am on Saturday May 29th for the cheapest race in Georgia. $3.00 gets you in. Water & oranges will be served, and the race will be timed, courtesy of Steve.

Just because you started late, doesn't mean you have to finish last.

John and one of his friends want to run the Americus race this Saturday, and I'd like to run a certified course this weekend (for a change!), so who else wants to ride down to Americus with us? I have room for 4 more, probably more when the two teenagers can't get out of bed on Saturday morning!

Scott,

Did you check the Americus photos online? There is a good one of you standing there contemplating the humidity before the race.

Hopefully, I'll get much cooler temps and lower humidity in Buffalo on Sunday.

Perry, thanks for the heads-up on the photos. There were some good ones of the starting line, one good one of David and 2 of Eric. Also, good luck in Buffalo.
The temps are awful. I tried an 8 miler yesterday and walked the last mile home after running 7. This is too hot for May, and 95 forecast for today! Time to make use of my Wellness Center membership and start back on the treadmill. Can I do decent hill repeats on a treadmill? Or should I just do them early in the morning?

You could do them on the treadmill. But, the intensity of the effort and all the incline adjusting will freak out those around you. When I've done them on the treadmill, I would jump off the belt at the end of the uphill portion and jog around the room to cool off. It's hard to reduce the incline and speed at the same time with your heart rate maxxed out. I've only done them twice on the treadmill and that's because it was storming outside. Typically I get them done early in the morning.

Did you see the photo of me on the starting line with all the guys toweing over me? There's one I need to show my cross country runners that think you have to have long legs to run fast.
