You can't miss the grey hair - unless it's snowing and I wear a white tuque. I really want to cheer for the cool runners but I need to know who you are........best of luck everyone. You might need snowshoes according to weather reports........
Good luck Mercury, I won't be there on Sunday I'll be running the hypothermic 1/2 marathon on Ile du Boucherville. From what I was told today picking up my race bib this is not a road race it run on trails on the Island and the trails should be nice and muddy if it warms up tomorrow. Muddy and snow on Sunday this should be fun.
Good luck to all running on Sunday.
tonight 3.11 miles in 26.32 minutes. tomorrow rest and stretch. Sunday's cocktail GU 2x caffeine and redbull energy drink.

Good morning everyone - will be running, swimming and throwing in some yoga for good measure (yeah, right, OUCH ) this weekend but won't be on the hill nor will I be able to join in for the Chinese food .
Good luck Roly, looking forward to reading your report..
Good luck to the Ile B runners....want to hear about it too...

Good luck Roly. It is supposed to drop below freezing - barely - overnight, so footing may be more solid than anticipated. At Ile Bizard, I am more concerned with ice, especially as you go down into the golf course part. Even last year, in the outstanding weather, footing caused one to zigzag a lot. We'll just see. Good luck to everyone, racing or not.

.... anybody considering the mountain today(or tomorrow)?..... don't bother!!! it's all but impassable.... so my run this morning took a massive detour: ran to the monument, then down through the Mcgill ghetto to old montreal, west through Griffintown down to Atwater market, up the hill to Dr. Penfold, east back to parc, north up to J. Talon and then west back to chez moi...... felt like a tourist 2:40.... must've covered about 18 miles I guess. Bumped into Burt from the shoe-shop.... big smiles and high fives.

Alright, I still plan to run tomorrow morning at 8am (or earlier if I must!). Who's in? Alternate plan instead of the mountain 'cause it's too dangerous is to leave right from my doorstep. Distance will be determined by who decides to join me. KJ, you in? You're so close to me! Who else? Am I going to do this run alone too? Grommit, what time you running? Want to finish your last 10-13k with me?
Mitch, we miss you !!!!! I thought about you and Da Houde as I climbed up Clarke alone the other night ... did you run that during the day? Contact me, let's do that soon together!

KJ: I try not to work too many weekends... but I lucked out and got two in a row

I found myself a running partner ... TB!! Because of the ice pellets falling right now, we figure it won't be safe tomorrow on the streets, and definitely not on the mountain (thanks for the warning, Grommit!) Here's the plan ... I'm going to put up with Mr. TM for 45 minutes and run beside TB who is doing his crazy long run tomorrow, then I will go hit the pool to be joined by a half-thrashing, half-floating TB a while afterwards. He gets me to run on the TM which I despise, and I get him to dip in the pool and show off my fake prowess. Then off to Chinatown afterwards! And then after that, I plan to do a spinning class ... Get all the sports in tomorrow!
Grommit: Sorry, no can do for next week ... T is spinning, W + Th are Toronto. Friday is kids, unless you're game for a short run, we're supposed to snowboard that night and though I'd like to run Da Houde, it may not be wise ... ooooh but it's tempting! ...
Hope it's not too slippery for you all tomorrow! Have fun and we expect some race reports!

Thank you all for your encouragement.
Not sure how I am going to run this race. Should I just take it as another training run on the trails or race it. I havn't really been doing any speed work but I may just increase my pace a little and see whats happens.
The weather may decide for me since it looks like rain this morning. Who knows?

Hypothermic Half Marathon. (this will be short for now have to run out for lunch)
Best half I have done yet and the toughest, first place male finished in 1:36 gives you an idea of the terrain. 3 loops on very, very slippery ice granular snow that was very loosely packed + slushy, icey, trails in the woods with water puddle thrown in periodically just to get your feet nice a wet. This was no race for a PB great training but it would have been a loty easier if I had worn snow shoes. Your footing was very difficult slipping and sliding and sinking into the snow.
The post breakfast was fantastic in a hall at the Hotel where the race started. (scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast, croissants, cinamin buns, fruit salad, fried potatoes, bran flakes, beans, coffee , juice and door prizes) The Running Room did great with the organization on this race.
Grommit you would have loved it. SS I received the best finishing medal to date from this run.

I want to see you medal ... your time is great, don't knock yourself! Congratulations on another race well done!
I on the other hand did a 5k on the TM. Forced by TB. I would have been more distance had I actually gotten out of bed when TB called me this morning. After a few minutes, I had bumped it up to almost a 5:40 pace then a little while after that, I figured I'd try a 5:15 pace. I definitely know I wouldn't want to do a marathon at that pace. TB thought I was "exerting" myself. I thought it was just really uncomfortable - I hate the treadmill feel on my stride .. so unnatural. Had I been outside, I would have been revelling in a 5:00 pace soaking up this gorgeous sunshine! Mind you, I couldn't keep up that pace either, but it sure feels good to let the horses go sometimes ...
Take advantage of this sun ... I'm going cycling soon, just after this nap ... TB made sure to stuff me afterwards with some yummy Chinese food .. you should have seen it DR ...

Hello Runners!, Racers, .. and everyone who took it easy!... I was glad I didn't sign up for any events for this weekend.. and I was happy just watching another Hockey game while the rain did it's thing... Well, I am going to take advantage of this afternoon sunlight, and bump up the pace today.. I will be ready for the next race day, and I think I might even sign up early for it!
Roly.. Good work out there today.. It sounds like miserable conditions.. You did all you could do.... make the best of it!, and enjoy the post party!
Silly Sally.. I will takr your word for it.. That the treadmills feel unnatural.. and I feel for you. Enjoy the Bike ride!

I have to say that the weather was perfect today for a race, 10k at Īle Bizard. The rain stopped just before the starting time. The course, 2 loops of 5k, was hilly, not a lot of flats, so rythm was out. You had to trust your feeling. On one half of the loop there was some ice but they had put a lot of sand so traction was very acceptable. I took this race as a test to see where I was in my training since I was on and off for the last 2 months. I was quite surprised with my time, I finished 14 sec off my PB. Very happy about my day. Next on the list should the 10k in Lasalle.
Where was KJ, I thought you said you were going to be there.
I really need all of the Montreal cool runners experience to help me to complete Jay.
Let me explain. I can run the distance if I take it slow no problem there , the problem is any time I try to push the pace up a notch I end up getting hurt (pain) enough to slow me down. Training for the Montreal Marathon AT slowed me down. Running the Montreal Half hip and knee pain slowed me down. Ottawa half hip and knee pain slowed me down. Hypothermic half hip pain again.
Is there execises that I can do to help develop the hip. Core exercises that I can work on. I really want to work on speed and strength development.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention coolest part of the race the deer standing next to the trails It let me run by it about 10 feet away and didn't move. That alone was worth the money.

Hi gang. Roly; it sounds like you could use some IT Band stretching for the hip pain. Is it located on the outside? I had the problem for years and my doctor put me on arthritis meds but in the end, a fitness trainer supervisor at the Y gave me some stretching exercises that cleared up the problem once and for all. It didn't happen overnight but got progressively better.
As for the knees, might I suggest Leg Curls & Leg Extensions at a gym? Use the machines there and they will strengthen the tendons around the joint and should help tremendously, again over time. Stop in one Tuesday or Thursday at the NDG - Y between 4:00 & 5:30 when I am working in the weight room & I can arrange a guest pass and give you a program. Email me if needed.
Waydago Omni, on your PR today. You ran great on a course that doesn't give up PR's easily. Man those hills........... I did manage to PR as well, much to my suprise, since I did nada speed work because of my nagging hamstring. 38:13 was the time, but interestingly enough, I only finished 2nd in my category - 50-59yrs. I was 7 seconds slower last year and won. Oh well............it just goes to show...............I'm not sure what it goes to show actually. As I sit on my exercise ball with ice pack on the leg and another on my big toe to get rid of a humongous blood blister, I can only look forward to Lasalle & maybe the Boreal Half. We'll see, after more physio sessions this week.
Great to see ya Chops ( with child). You too Omni (and child), Have some suds like me as we watch the Super Bowl. Cheers.

Obviously there is a pattern to the pain here ... maybe you should look into your biomechanics and think of orthotics? Do you do any core strengthening exercises, like abs and shoulders and butt? That's why I kick-box. Stretching is always good ...
When you say you can run the distance, you are talking about running the half (29k) or the full (30.5k) You know as much as I do that the full is an ultra, right ... so does that mean that you're just signed up for the half, which is more than mightily challenging and still way harder than a regular road marathon ... let us know ... cause we worry and we care ...
I like the medal ... I want ... don't care for what's on the back, but the raised snowflake ... yeah ...
Um, didn't make the cycling ... that 4 hour nap nixed it. It's all TB's fault! Stuffed me until there was no blood circulating anywhere else but in my stomach! Alright, there is the stationary bike tonight ... maybe ...
Have a nice night and congrats to other racers - you all did amazing!

SS as far as core exercises go I have done weight training since I was 13 (about 30 Years) In the last 18 months I have stopped. kinda got bored and fed up of the same thing. I think I'll dust of the weights at home and start training again. I have about a 1000 lbs of weight and equipement sitting in my garage.
I am signed up for the full Jay I wouldn't have if I felt I couldn't do it at least slowly. My problem is with pushing my pace up a notch.
Mercury1 thanks for the advice I'll try and start with the leg curls and extentions at home. It will be hard getting to the NDG Y at 4:00 or 5:00. BTW I use to train there about 20 or so years ago when I lived near Cavendish and Somerled.
TB thanks for the documents, I'll print them up at work and start trying a few of the exercises.

Hey roly.... congrats on finishing today..... sorry about your pain.
"I really need all of the Montreal cool runners experience to help me to complete Jay."
It probably wont surprise you but.... I screwed up my hips [torn adductors and abductors] once apon a time.... I ended up not being able to walk without a limp for a month or so .... never mind running!!...... The cure was pretty simple and effective (and expensive= 6 trips to the physio) as long as I kept up the exercises and stayed away from running.... You do not need a thousand pounds of weights.... you're a runner these days not a lifter What you need is an elastic band and something to attach it to.... I used to use the leg of my desk.... looked mighty silly.... but wtf Right?
here's a site with some pics... It's the elastic band ones that fixed me..
On the subject of the Jay M.... you'll be fine ...... look it says so here....... "If you have not run a marathon in less than 5.30 hours in the last 12 months, don't even think about doing this one. We realize that the expense of traveling, lodging, etc makes the trip pretty expensive for some. Okay, your first reaction is that 5.30 hours for 18.5 miles is nothing. This is not a joke. This is a very, very hard race and if you have not run a 5.30 hour marathon in the last 12 months, the chances of being cutoff are very high. Think twice before registering. Our Cut off time at Aid station 5 will be 5.30"
....... but as with all good long races (this don't look like disney much to me....) there's a cut off time to save people from hurting themselves..... so, as I said up there... you'll be fine you may dnf... but you'll be fine
did I run today in the rain?..... absolutely not !! got outta bed, looked out the window..... had a pee and went back to bed... legs were a little tired anyways..... does standing in a 10' square for 10 hours straight count as cross training? ... I am so not into trade shows..... arghhh!!

Good web site - I have bookmarked it.
Um, Grommit, this is the Jay Half (18.5 miles or 29.5 km) that you are talking about, not the Jay Full of 30.5 MILES. That's what I believe Roly is registered in. For which one did you register?
You've got guts, Roly. I'm a complete wimp beside you ... <Sally bows>

Thank you all for the information and help. I will be adding a lot of these exercises to my routine even thought I have done weight training in the past there are still some muscles and areas that may have been missed and need to be worked on for better running performance.
I really, really am looking forward to Jay, and even If I DNF I will come out of this a lot healthier and stronger to try agian the next year.
