Hey Roly ... I always take 2, usually 3 weeks off from running after a marathon and just cross-train a bit, starting a week to 2 weeks afterwards. I don't kill myself. One thing that does happen to me after a marathon is a supressed immune system, so it often happens that I will get sick soon after a marathon. I've had bronchitis several times afterwards, but this year was just a nasty cold.
Don't kill yourself now to find yourself in a horrible state of overtraining later, like right before Jay. Grommit and I have a really wide base and a horrible number of races between us. Besides that, we're stupid and silly but when it comes down to it, when it gets serious, I think we would take our own advice instead of our usual throwing caution to the wind.
Besides that, I think that Grommit and I are both genetically lucky with endurance genes. Both of us are extremely functional on little sleep and rest ... sick puppies we are! But hey, even I have my limit ... I'm going to try to get 7 hours sleep tonight! Last night was 2, which is way too little. 4 or 5 is more manageable. 6 is basically normal. 12 is I'm in a coma. But I've slept 14 hours straight a couple of times when I really needed it.
Take the proper time to recuperate Roly ... we love you and want to see you finish Jay in one piece, alive and kicking.
Ralf: I am sorry to hear about your shin splint. So you're on Voltaren? That's one of my best friends. So you're going to get acquainted with Ms. Pool and Ms. SB? I will think of you as I train ...
Grommit: Why Mr. SB ... surely Ms. SB would have been more exciting, n'est-ce pas? Thanks for the links, will take a look later when I get some more time.
Chops: I heard you were "barred" - what happened?

You guys are all so scientific with workout / injuries etc. I am impressed. On the other hand, when I think too much it usually gets me into trouble. Have been feeling lousy lately, probably due to either the weather, overtraining or need for another vacation. Been on the treadmill more than I would like to admit, lately. Trying to get my body use to sub 7:00min./mile pace for Boston & Ottawa. Won't do much for my 10K though. Ile Bizard is almost upon us.
Tonight felt particularly tired. Ran for 55 minutes on the TM @ 8.4 - 8.6 mph ( 6:58 - 7:15 / mile) which ordinarely would have been relatively easy, but not tonight. Struggled the whole way, breaking things down into 5 minute segments, just to finish. Phew! Did my weight program after a brief rest, though I could only manage 2 sets of 13 exercises, rather than the usual 3. Bed will feel great tonight.
Hope to be at Hurley's, if Mr/Mrs. Weather co-operates. Goodnite all.
Boy, those articles were a mouthful! All that jargon ... you would be impressed, Mercury. I on the other hand am thinking, what!? I don't have time to do all my physio exercises nevermind all those other tests, even taking my heartrate regularly is a chore.
Alright, Grommit, you win ... I will try to adapt a more regular rest routine. I miss running, that's for sure ... I may have to chat up Mr. TM ... Ick.
Mercury: hope to see you at Hurley's, even with this crappy weather. Heck, it took me over 2 hours to get downtown today, which is about 9-10k away. Police, firemen, blocked streets, ice galore, water spewing out of sewer system, stalled cars, accidents. The pedestrians were a heck of a lot faster.
Roly: Mr. BB is a good friend. I should invite Mr. BR (Barbadian rum) over sometime ...

Oh don't cancel! Just show up a little late if need be ... A member of my tri team is supposed to show up - he needs running partners!
Swam an hour and a half and also ran 6k, the distance to and from the YMCA pool. The people are really nice on my tri team and I will try to get some of them out running with us.
Sunday - Mont-Royal - meet at monument on Parc - 9am - Who's in?

no Running on Sunday. DW van is in the shop till Monday. Good thing it was all the recalled parts that broke. Besides I need the day to rest, with all the sick people at work I think I may be coming down with a bug.

Thanks to DR, SS and Roly for a wonderful evening at Hurleys. The cake and book were thoughtful and generous gifts. May you find nothing but success in all your endeavors this year. Gotta turn in. Early start tomorrow.

And thanks to TB for having his birthday 'cause that gave us the perfect opportunity to stuff our faces with good food and great cake. Thanks for picking up the cake, DR, 'cause I would have never found the time! DELICIOUS! Sorry the rest of you missed it ... we saved you a piece ... NOT!
TB, you didn't mention the special round treats that DR gave you as part of your gift, and I'm not talking chocolate ... sooo thoughtful.
Roly: Good to see you alive ... don't forget, take it easy a few more days ... cross-train ... think future Ironman in your head ...

Yep, another great evening at Hurleys, thanks to birthday-boy-TB, Roly and Silly for the company. We discussed the 2006 racing season and tried to figure out whose plans were the craziest... (Hey, I was the only sane one there...hehe)
So after the Treadmill Marathon, we were thinking of holding a deep-water-running marathon in the water ... anyone interested? Haha!
TGIF! Have a great weekend guys!

Congratulations TB. I am sorry that I couldn't get to Hurley's last night. Seems that you had a lot of fun.

Thanks for thinking about me, Sally. Voltaren was last week. Before it was Ibuprofen. Now I am on something heavier (Indometacin). I wonder what will come next.
I am still trying to figure out what SB means:
a) Sucking bike? Naw, how would you know, you never saw my bike.
b) Streckbank (probably stretch bench in English)? Why should I get aquainted to medieval torture. To raise my pain limit? Or since the pain in my shin wouldn't be my primary concern any longer?
c) Swimming bool? Apart from the poor orthography, this can't be since you also mention Ms. pool.
d) Sally's bisquits? That would be my favorite answer. But I still have some doubts.
So, was zum Teufel heisst SB? Wer kann mir helfen?
Enjoy your weekend
Ralf

Anyone interested in running a 5K in Montreals underground.
Urban moles, on your marks A 5K race moves underground to follow Montreal's storied network of tunnels
ALAN HUSTAK, The Gazette Published: Friday, January 20, 2006 OK, it's not yet on a par with the Boston Mara-thon, but Montreal's newest athletic challenge has definite possibilities: a five-kilometre foot race through the tunnels and passageways of the storied underground city.
The Feb. 19 race will be part of the 7th annual Montreal High Lights Festival and is expected to attract 500 participants and another 10,000 spectators.
"It's a first. It's unprecedented. There's nothing in the world like it," said Michel Labreque, High Lights president and CEO.
"Our main objective is to launch it, get it off the ground, then it watch it grow.
"With all the stairs and tunnels people have to navigate, it will be more like an urban cross- country run than a marathon.
"There's no track quite like it in the world. You have to climb 480 steps and go down 569 during the run."
Labreque said the race is designed, in part, to familiarize tourists and Montrealers with the subterranean network.
"Everyone knows part of the underground city, but few people walk through all 30 kilometres of it, from one end of it to the other. So the race is an opportunity for people to discover its many surprises."
Stitched together between 1962 and 2003, when the last link between the World Trade Centre and the Palais des congres was completed, the underground city is a maze of atriums, tunnels, indoor gardens and food courts. It links 35 skyscrapers and office towers and 2,600 stores into one giant enclosed shopping mall and retail complex.
The run will begin in the Peel metro station at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 19, a Sunday, and head through Cours Mont Royal, through the Eaton Centre, south into Place Ville Marie and Central Station, east through the Quartier international into the Palais des congres and north to the finish line in Complexe Desjardins.
The race will be followed by a walking tour underground.
To avoid congestion, runners' start times will be staggered, and their speed will be clocked with computer chips.
Participants must be 16 years of age or older to enter. Advance registration is $20. On site registration $25. The race is, however, restricted to 500 contestants.
The first 2,500 people to sign up for the walking tours will receive pedometers.
