Grommit,

I guess we will meet up at the gym at 6:00-6:15 am. I'm second guessing my sanity today in going thru with this, but it should be cool. Does the gym have fans near the TM or can I exspect it to get hot.
I will be using GU and e-load to get me thru it.

Nap time. going to a 40th birthday party for a friend tonight. I'll stay away from the booze and save it for my finishing celebration.

I have a digital camera, but might only catch you closer to "THE END" when I will pass by with the kids. Not sure if David will run now, have to speak with him - he's caught a cold.

Fit for Life is south of the Met across from Jarry Park, north of Jean-Talon, just north of de Castelnau.

POST-TM CELEBRATION: At my house, which is about 5 or so min. away from Fit for Life. I'll give you my address at the gym or you can join us at my house directly (e-mail me for address). I will be back from the gym directly after the Finish awaiting all you hungry people. Roly's got the pizza, I've got the cake and drinks. Feel free to bring anything else.

See you all soon! And good luck to our runners.

Sally

UPDATE: David will not be running, not feeling 100%, but will be joining us for the post-race bash. Mercury, will you be running with them? Me and the kids will be there around 11:30 to catch the tail end of the spectacle then will head straight back to my house to get ready. So the party will probably start around 12:30ish for those who are wondering. Attendance so far: me, my kids, Grommit, Roly and David. TB said he would try to come by ... Df and munchkin ... can you come? KJ? Hello, anyone else? Hands up please and ASAP so we can figure out how much pizza to order

My hat off to both of you for this demonstration of mental fortitude. I hope your treadmills allow you a view into the morning's aerobics and hip hop classes just so that time passes more quickly...

In other Mars news, I've put in a really good week of training just this past week, recovering after 2 weeks of nastiness during which my GP actually forbade me to workout. Major chest congestion, bronchitis, nasty cough, sinus trouble... the works. My doctor gave me anitbiotics, 2 types of steroids, a codeine cough syrup, and Allegra in a dosage 6 times what you get OTC.

Since the bubbling in my lungs, and the rest of whatever hit me, has ended, I've put in 3 runs, 2 bike workouts, 2 swim workouts, 1 elliptical workout and 3 serious weight training workout. God it feels good to be alive and functional!

I'm within a few days of signing up for Big Sur. Yup, I think the Big Sur marathon will be my first stop in terms of major races this year. Anybody want to join me out on the West Coast? If you are tempted, make up your mind quickly... registration is up to 78% as of this morning.

A short passage on running technique in Joe Friel's triathlon training bible caught my eye during the period when I could only read about working out, and I've been trying to change my running stride a bit this past week. It's been tough to stay mentally focused on my form throughout my runs, and I'm feeling a little post-run tightness in unusual spots, but it feels like I can make this change permanent, and my last 2 runs, despite the inactivity, have been extremely successful. I improved my previous best times on two training courses from 52 to 48 minutes, and from 1h 17min to 1h 10min, just like that. Interestingly enough, I feel like I'll have to ramp up the marathon mileage from scratch, since my legs are really feeling the difference in technique so I don't feel like I can carry over much of the endurance I've built up over the years. Kind of a different exercise. Ah well... we'll see what happens.

So... I see that Jay and Boston are on the agenda for some of the MTL Frozen Runners, and an IM for SS at the end of the year. What else is coming up for the team? Df... Ottawa, Quebec, or Montreal? TB, take care of that foot. Looks like some cross-training is on the horizon. Chops... what's going on buddy? Nike HM? Ottawa HM? Ralf... Berlin? Jungfrau? Omni... what races will you be doing with the push carriage? Truxx... when is that sub-40 10 K for? KJ... anything coming up? Capoeira competition? DR... any track coming up? Who else? What else?

Enjoy the pizza at SS' place...

The GERBILS are finished!! And wearing their medals around their necks!! We're all here at Sally Central waiting for the pizza ... Grommit qualified for Boston with time to spare 3:32:41 and Roly put in a fine finish for his first ever marathon, just under 4:40.

Grommit wants to post his splits but I'm ignoring his watch that's he's stuck in front of my face. I'll let him write his race report himself

Let me just say ... we CoolRunners are super proud of you both ... Placing first and second in our first Montreal Treadmill Marathon are great achievements.

More news to come as our men recuperate enough to fill you all in!

Congrats gentlemen! Great job Roly for your first and Grommit for the BQ! I hope you guys all got some good footage for this and I'm waiting impatiently to find out when it will air and on what channel...

Enjoy the pizza, you earned it all and more! So what is on the agenda in terms of training the next few weeks following the marathon? Roly how are the legs?

Hey Mars, good to hear about your good training week, I hear ya about the nastiness and the chest congestion, I had it in december... (all of december!). How is Mrs. Mars doing?

Seems like everyone is triathlon training these days. Wish I had the guts to learn how to swim

When is Hurleys?

Watch it out there, it's slippery...

Watch it out there, it's slippery...

1) Apart from a little neck problem causing some pain in her right arm, she's doing great. She started PT for it last week. That's what she gets for being a mouse-jockey... Some more regular working-out on the horizon for Mrs. MM...

2) After some nightmarish experiences in swim classes when I was 7, I never got into a pool until my late 20s. And then, only to do martial arts training drills. In my early 30s, as I got more comfortable in the water, and with the help of my first wife, I learned how to breaststroke, even if it was for just a lap at a time. In my late 30s, between my growing interest in multisport events, and a herniated disk problem that pretty much left only swimming as a workout option for a 4-month period, I learned how to swim. Breaststroke and front crawl. Now, I'm not sure I want to call myself a "swimmer" because I'm so slow, but you know what, I've gone 2 K in the pool with the front crawl without stopping, breathing and all. So... there is hope, and it's never too late. This is truly a case of "if I did it, anybody can".

3) The pavement is just fine here (in Las Vegas), thank you very much. I hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary. BTW, I have been wearing light gloves and long sleeve shirts, since it has gotten a bit nippy out here, but I'm still running in shorts. And the weather should start getting warmer in the next month or so. Just thought I would share this will all of you. I know... I'm just evil...

Take care all.

Mars

I won't bore you with details of a RR for this one. Actually I don't even want revisulize it for a RR.

Thank a bunch to grommit for going thru this with me and a little correction to his time 3:23:41. I guess this means I OU1.

The legs are little stiff I was doing OK up to the 20 mile distance with a time of about 3:25:00 and slowed down a lot for the last 6.22 in about 75 minutes,

Thank you Sally for the post run medal and for hosting the post celebration.

Thank you DF, TB and SS and family for coming by to cheer us on. But Sally you could of shown up before my last mile.

Grommit, TB and Sally all took photos of the event and post celebration. Hopefully they will be posting them soon.

Good afternoon all, boy its cold out there today ! Last night was lovely with the snow coming down...today, I went from indoors to indoors...

Congrats guys, found you two in good spirits this am...and found TB keeping you company on another TM...I think actually he was keeping the young lady to his right company, oops, did I just say that ?!

TB and I shared some coffee and the bus back downtown, leaving our two racers to focus on finishing their marathon.

I headed to the pool for 30 minutes, its hard work, will have to find time to go more often. Then headed to a yoga center for 90 minutes of Ashtanga - yikes ! the more I sweated the more I smelled of chlorine.. I figured that at some point the people on each side of me would start saying " do you smell that...where is it coming from.." speaking of marathon, one of the gents was wearing a San Diego Marathon shirt...

Mars - you are evil on two counts - the weather in your area, and bringing up Big Sur. Glad to hear from you, been a while.

Df

Oops forgot - sharing the computer with munchkin this aft - Mars - if I'm in shape, Nike 1/2 then the Montreal Marathon..with a handful of 5 and 10s - these are fun, gives me a chance to see people I've gotten to know...

Grommit: sorry about that typo, my fingers couldn't keep up with your actual running pace and I tripped.

Yeah I'm fealing a little tired and some soreness in the legs, but overall suprised I can walk normally up and down the stairs. Even had to run up to get the phone.

And no nap started to but the phone rang and woke me up. I'm heading off to bed soon. The 3 1/2 hour sleep last night is catching up.

Um, sweetie ... it's actually tomorrow which is the really sore day ... tell us how it goes ... Try to get up every once in a while to stroll, even around the cubicles. As TB said, it's the sitting that'll kill you.

From Joe Friel, The Triathlete's Training Bible, p. 172.

"Nicholas Romanov, Ph.D. -- formerly a Russian university professor of physical education who now lives and works in the US -- has spent 2 decades studying the biometrics of running. One of basic tenets of Dr. Romanov's work is that the sensation the runner experiences when running correctly is that his or her feet are simply moving up and down -- not swinging forward and backward. With this technique, the recovery foot is lifted toward the butt, creating a small, acute angle at the knee, and thus a shorter "pendulum" of the recovery leg. The significance of this is that for the same amount of applied energy, a short pendulum moves through its arc faster than a long pendulum, which would occur if the recovery leg was nearly straight at the knee. So the shorter pendulum resulting form the high foot carriage helps produce a high stride rate. In an attempt to increase running velocity, the foot must be raised higher to keep stride rate constant or increasing. After the foot has been pulled up, the recovery leg begins to open at the knee as the foot is allowed to drop back down to the road, making contact below or only a couple of inches in front of the body's center of gravity. From the runner's perspective, all that has happened is that the recovery foot has been pulled vertically up toward the butt and allowed to drop stright back down to the running surface... Such a movement is very economical and also diminishes impact forces, thus reducing the risk of injury."

Over the years, I've gone over a lot of material on running technique. Some of it I never bothered with since I couldn't visualize it, or mentally "feel it", and the rest I tried, but it was just was too difficult to apply... either I couldn't run more than half-a-mile without feeling that my heart was going to give out on me, or if I could keep running, it would be something like a 12 min/mile.

But as soon as I read this, I could feel it in my mind. I knew it would work for me. So I went out and tried it, and aside from needing to really focus on my stride throughout the run, and some soreness in unusual spots on my legs, it felt good, and my speed improved significantly. I do feel like this new technique will require me to rebuild my long distnace leg endurance again, but I like the way it feels, and I like the fact that I feel faster.

For those of you who know my stride, you know it can only be an improvement. So we'll see how this will turn out... experiment in progress.

BTW, this also makes mid-foot landing easier, which also presents advantages in terms of energy return and energy conservation.
