It was a nice day for running! If only I had remebered my gloves... I would have been really comfortable. It wsn't bad though. I still have something to learn about being prepared for the cold weather.
We ran about 5 miles or so at a comfortable pace, and then bumped it up toward the end. It felt good to run, for sure! I think we are going to run some other places here including the regional park... There are a lot of options there, with trails and I am looking forward to it!
DF7.. I am glad you enjoyed the run tonight! Yes it is beautiful outside!!

the good news is.......... chances are, if you're gonna twist your ankle in a pothole you'll do it in the first 10 minutes of your run. Well, this is my theory as of this morning...... I haven't had an opportunity to run since last Saturday and was so happy to get out the door on dry pavement and head for the mountain. The legs felt great, good tunes in the ears... everything was perfect... and then I find myself doing a full body-roll on the deck in front of a bunch of schoolgirls and a couple of motorists..... one of whom offered me a lift home. The culprit wasn't even a very big hole, but beautifully crafted to take my size 9,5 and twist my ankle in such a manner.... to make me pull out a few of those seldom heard profanities from the other side of the pond
So I sat on the curb for a moment and then walked/limped a little, thought to myself "this will stop hurting soon" and tried to run. I managed about 500 yards and called it quits....
I reckon, that had I have hit the same "trou" later in the run I probably wouldn't have done the damage, but as I wasn't anywhere near warmed-up the lack of flexibility in my ankle... threw me off balance=twisted ankle.
So its out with the vitamin i and the 4 year old frozen peas.... and I may take a couple of days of x-training (yes I do the RICE thing)

..... hmmm maybe Sally will teach me to swim

take care

Df7, truxx, omni3. good to hear you got to enjoy a nice run outdoors. I wimped out and ran on the TM last night for 3.1 miles.

The hip muscles are still a bit sore. I know those stretching and hip exercises that TB and Grommit provide will work I tried them and they hit the exact area that was tender.

Grommit your suggestion that I lean forward while running is bang on. It seams that leaning back can cause additional stress to the back and hip flexors, combined with sitting all day and these two areas being some of my weakest muscles.
Live and learn.

Mercury1. BTW great race on Sunday congrat.

Grommit ouch.. sorry to hear hope it heals quick.

Have a good day.

I know when I run on the treadmill more often, my hips end up hurting, that's one reason why I avoid it. Maybe that could be contributing as well? You didn't complain about your hips before you had the TM ... Hmmmm ....

Grommit: Sorry to hear about the ankle - I feel for you. Make sure to let it heal properly ... now don't try to do Boston on a sprained ankle ...

Df, Truxx & Omni: Good for you ... getting out to run ...

I have recently decided that sleeping in is more important than the second daily training session, at least for the moment until I get past this fund-raiser Monday (who's coming?) Anyway, we're being tested this week in the pool and I'm not supposed to be tired. Yeah ....

I had some hip pain before I bought the TM. The AT and knee were a little bit worse so I only complained more about them , I seem to have corrected those problems by stretching, exercise and running slow. I now have to work on additional stretching/exercising and running form.

This is starting to become a full time job.

Yes, let us not forget how it's the JOB that's interfering with our PASSIONS ... Can you imagine being paid to go off and train and play sports and have fun all day long? Wouldn't that just be too cool?

Omni3 On Sunday when I was running in the snow, splashing in water puddles and slipping on ice in the rain for 2 1/2 hours I wasn't calling it a passion... What the F%k am I saying I had blast.

Way to keep training people. Far too windy / cold today to chance the outdoors. Did a tempo run of 25 minutes indtead on the TM. I use my heart rate monitor when I do tempos since I am trying to train my body to become accustomed to handle (ultimately) a sub 6:00 / mile pace for 10K. I presently run at 85 - 90% MHR for 25 minutes. Today that carried me at 9.3 mph or 6:15/mile. Over time I hope that sub six will feel manageable.

Tomorrow, I hope to do the mountain. Anyone know what the conditions are like up there? Have to do some hills.

Hello Everyone! What a nice run this evening! It was about 4 miles+ total.. From here to the regional park, and through the neighborhood at sunset. I ran it the reverse direction from when I ran it last year. Then I started my kick a little earlier than the other direction, and I was really tired when I finally arrived back home and warmed down. I feel it in my Quads on the stairs. It will be fine tomorrow..

Sorry to hear the Ankle story Grommit! I hope it isn't as bad as I imagined from the visual.. I am like that too.. try and run on it just to make sure it still hurts.. yep, it hurts.

Roly, thanks for the encouragement today.. right after I read the days posts from everyone is when I bolted out the door!

Grommit: Hope the injury isn't too serious. I have no doubt in my mind that you'll be prancing arround Mont-Royal sooner than later. Check your e-mail. I've forwarded something to your attention to help prevent against reinjury.

As for myself, I've commenced a new core program that is both physically and technically demanding (Roly knows). I realise that I need to work on my coordination (especially with weights and lunges). That inconjunction with the yoga have occupied my mind while my foot is on the road to recovery. The pain manifests itself with less frequency, duration and intensity.

Track workouts hurt less but my golf ball is still my best friend. Getting ready for a Léger-Boucher fitness appraisal tomorrow. It'll be modified and be run on the TM. Tried to get some last minute cramming in with a 45 minute run on the TM this evening.

JB: I recall Prariekid aske me a question about the fitness appraisal. This is the name of it. There's plenty of info on the web on this:

http://artic.ac-besancon.fr/svt/act_ped/svt_lyc/second/journees2000/Pages%20htm/Epreuve%20piste.htm

Omni: Great to hear from you. Sounds like you had fun on Sunday. I have no doubt that you'll reach your 1:35 goal in April. Good stuff

Truxx: Great to hear from you buddy. Looking forward to running with you sometime.

Mercury: I enjoy the numbers you post up on your posts. I'm sure you'll qualify for Boston at Boston.

Take care,

TB

Hmmm ... Sorry Grommit, I'm not too entirely impressed with this article. And the guy can't spell ... "of coarse". I've dated a couple of cyclists and they never had an issue about shaving their legs, were never ashamed or conscious of it, and wore it more like a trophy ... "Hey, look at me, I'm a real cyclist."

Secondly, I can't imagine what it might feel like in transition while trying to peel off that wetsuit and ripping out all the hairs on the body at the same time ... I'm sure it isn't easy, but I will never know because I am a hairless Asian.

I see lots of really hairy men at the pool ... REALLY HAIRY ... I think they should all shave, triathlete or not ... don't care if it makes them faster or not, it would just be more fun esthetically for my eyes

Grommit:
ATRICE is my friend. Arnica + Traumeel + Rest + Ice + Compression + Elevation. Try it. It allowed me to run Honolulu even with my golf ball ankle. I care ...

Oh yes ...

Sunday morning run on Mont-Royal. 9:30am. Meet at the monument. My friends David from New York and Dirk (my Ironman trainer) from Florida will be there. Who's coming? Be there or be square.

Good morning all,

Grommit how is the ankle this morning.

Mercury1 very impressive training. I will start adding intensity to my training now during the week doing less milage Tues.- Thurs throwing in some speed work. While still building up the long slow milage on hills and trails on the week-ends.
last night ran 6.7 k outdoors in 34.32 Average pace of 5.09 min/km.
I tried running my last 0.34 miles of a run last week on the TM at a speed of 9.5. Boy was I huffing and puffing after that don't know how you do it for so long, lottsa practice I guess.

Truxx Keep up the running you gonna make us look bad.

TB I'm still trying to figure out how the heck to perform some of those exercises based on the description and photos you sent???? Keep up the hard work you'll make it to Boston one day.

Sally- Do to a tight schedule this week-end I will be running on the mountain at 8:00. My plan is to run up to the parking area turn around run down then up again and duck into the trails for a half hour. I'll try to stick around until 9:30 to say hi and meet everyone.

Grommit : Join Sally, RG and I as we pray daily to the Ankle Gods...

And do the strengthening exercises, right SS?

What works for me is popping lethal amounts of NSAIDS right off the bat then RICE. And swearing that I'll be more consistant with the ankle physio.

UPDATE : I realize that coming from me, "RICE" might be confusing. By RICE I mean the regular acronym of Rest, Ice, blah blah. Although starch is good too... With some broiled salmon... hmmm

it's just a tiny boo-boo.... I'll be fine. As for the exercises I've been doing about twenty minutes a week of ankles/shins for about 18 months in the name of prevention.... I guess my ankle would've been a lot worse without this... right?

anyway we're just a little bruised and swollen... I'll survive

Sorry, though I would love to, I won't be able to make it tonight to the Hell-Hills Run, though like Ralf and Mars and Chops, I have grown to love them ... something about putting myself up to the challenge and realising that it isn't so hard after all!

Have a good run, wherever you decide to go ... bundle up!

BTW, can you make it to Sunday's run? I know that would be two outings away from mother and baby in the same day, but just a thought ... Chops, will you be there?

Thank you both for getting back already! That is what I love about this group..
It used to be easier to get there to the Ville Maria Metro when I was in Montreal.. Now I have to really plan it.
I will save the trip for Sunday morning, depending on the weather.. I'll keep you poseted before then. Cool!
