We ran our first 5K race after 4 weeks of training in just under 33 minutes. Would we be stupid to attempt the Crazylegs? Crazylegs is probably a great one for you. There are a lot of spectators and runners, so if you need the extra boost to keep going, you will have it. They are also doing a wave start this year there isn't so much congestion for the first mile (which was a nightmare last year - I didn't get into a good stride until I was near the end of State Street!).
It is a fun one - go for it!

I was at Southshore - Striders 1/2. Another quality event even if Ma nature was not at her best.It had rained a lot the night before and you had a few water hazards and muddy shoes until you got to one spot were you had not choice but to run through some pretty deep water. Temp was 35F winds 10-12 MPH behind you on the way out and in your face on way back. All and all the striders always do a nice job and I plan to go again next year. It is always a nice low cost event.

Hey there, I live in Reedsburg (Wisconsin Dells area) and I could really use a running partner!I used to live in Green Bay, but all my running friends are there, alas. I have a 2-year-old daughter, and I did run throughout my pregnancy, but it's still been an uphill climb since then to reach my pre-pregnancy shape. (And furthermore, to find the time to get those longer runs in!) I'm currently training for the Run for the Butter 10K here in Reedsburg in mid-June. I haven't done a 10K since the Bellin Run in 2002! I did complete the Jingle Bell 5k in Madison in 2004, but no races since then due to a nagging knee injury. The knee is finally cooperating with me once again, so I look forward to getting back into the swing of things! I ran 3.2 today, and I hadn't run that far in a few years (sadly.) It felt good, and I did feel like I could have gone a bit further, but then it started pouring like mad. I'd really like to do a marathon someday . . .

GaelicTempest - It is not so much where you have been or even where you are currently at, but where are you going?Sounds like you are going forward and going to get better than you are right now. I live in Neenah and we are like Green bay - Enough people around to train with and enough races to keep you interested. The marathon is a good goal - Start with the 10K and then 1/2 Marathon and then the Marathon. What you will find is that by the time you can run a marathon you will be in better shape than you have been before for all distances. Enjoy the journey - Pay attention to speed bumps (Busy life, injuries or just bad days) and stay away from the people that do not support your goals (They try to suck the life out of your running). Although I am not Irish - I am married to someone that is part Irish and have 2 girls - Erin and Katie - Which makes me Irish by association.

Have you tried using www.gmap-pedometer.com to create routes? You can start from any point and make your own route.

I ran on the city path by the coliseum and someone told me it eventually connected with Military Ridge. I don't remember mile markers. I can't imagine military ridge being very exciting on foot. The main thing I remember from biking it many years ago is that going from Madison towards Mt Horeb was uphill and the way back was fast. I'd prefer the ups and downs of the arboreteum and the circular path would lead you past your vehicle a few times for fuel/water. But as Madison has grown quite a bit since I left in '96, I don't know how the traffic plays in around the zoo/hospital/Edgewood anymore.

Hi- I live in Marshfield, fairly new to running, my first event is the half marathon in Cincinnati on May 7. Thinking towards doing another half in the fall- considering Fox Cities- any thoughts? I drive through Appleton on the highway quite often, but not familiar with the course- any input appreciated. Sarah

I live in Marshfield 10-13 years ago - Didn't run back then.I live in Neenah now. The fox cities website has a elevation chart for marathon. There is elevation change, but nothin bad. I would be a good marathon or 1/2 marathon - Close enough to home and well run. I will most likely run the marathon this year. Only other suggestion if you wanted to wait a few weeks would be Whistle Stop in Ashland. Either way - you won't be disappointed - Welcome to the board If you want to know more specifics on the Fox Cities course and general marathon info - ask away as I know some posters here have run it multiple times.

Hey how is everyone doing now that spring seems to be here?Training for G-ma's hit a rough patch last week but I have hopefully gotten over it and back on track. I think the next long run will be a lot of mental games considering last week. Depending on how it goes I am looking for races after the marathon because I have read that you should already have a race in mind for afterward to help with the post marathon blues. Trying to decide if I want to do the Hayward Half marathon again or if I should go for Whistle Stop Half (I think there's a half). Oh the choices!! ------------------ Jennifer 8 WEEKS TO GRANDMA'S Current-205.5 Memorial Day Challenge - Goal 196

Runninlaw-The nicest 20 mile run I know of in the Madison area is around Lake Monona (about 11.1), plus the arboretum (6.2). The extra miles come from jogging around Monona Bay to get to the arboretum and back again. The whole run comes out to just under 20 miles.

Who else ran the Crazylegs on Saturday?? I really thought the wave start was a vast improvement - it's nice not stumbling over people for the first two miles. But the course detour (State St. construction) added more hills than usual. Oh well, I ran 2 seconds slower than my PR from 2004 (38:19 this year). But considering the added hills, the wind, and that I forgot to charge my Garmin the night before, so I had no watch to pace by, it was a great race! Unfortunately, the walkers didn't like it as well. My wife and daughter walked as usual. It took them 52 minutes to do two miles (they can easily walk that in 30 minutes usually). Lots of detours around State St. construction. Walk was funnelled onto narrow sidewalks, instead of having the whole street. Hopefully it will be better next year. ------------------ - Larry - My Profile

I ran the crazylegs for the first time...very cool. Also the first time I ever ran 5 miles! I'm a newbie. I finished in 55 minutes and my goal was under an hour so I'm content. Just a quick question...do you always go up that steep hill right after the one mile mark? FYI - running into camp randall and seeing the people in the stands was awesome...trust me, I was so slow that the stands were filled!

I am a new runner from Madison. I ran in the Crazylegs last Saturday. I am not fast yet, it took me 59 minutes 28 seconds. It took my legs a week to recover from that Today, I ran 2 miles in 22 min 15 seconds, so I already improved. I would sure like to lose about 15 pounds, I hope this will help as I increase my milage. Have a good day all. ------------------ Laurie PADI Divemaster #177811 http://www.fhtmpro.com/kutil

I am newly relocated to Dodgeville Wisconsin as of 9 months ago. Originally from Maine but liking this area a lot. Looking to do a 1/2 marathon up in La Crosse on Sept 30 so that should be a challenge. I have not run in a while so I am slowly building up the miles.Any suggestions for good races to a newbie?

Yes CrazyLegs always runs up and over Observatory Hill! It can be a killer if you take the first mile too fast. It was a lot worse in previous years before the "wave start", because a lot of folks who lined up in the front weren't really 6-minute milers, and would end up bonking on the hill, resulting in a lot of dodging and tripping when they suddenly stopped running right in front of you! This is one of my favorite races. ------------------ - Larry - My Profile

Hey all,I'm a Wisconsinite in exile. Raised in Plover (Stevens Point Area), went to school at Madison and now live in the Twin Cities, MN. I didn't start running until I moved to Minnesota, and I constantly kick myself for missing out on all the running opportunities in Madison. I'm hoping to run either Crazylegs or the Madcity 10k next year. I also have to run something in Stevens Point, to redeem all my sluggish years spent making fun of the cross country team ------------------ rahma's profile

I ran the Crazylegs and thought it was great...had so much...had a tought time with the running as 5 miles pretty much maxed out my previos best for distance. Anyway, ran my first 5K a month ago and finish at 34 minutes or so. Am thinking about doing the 5k they have during the Mad City Marathon...anyone ever run it? Flat? I know the by Observatory Drive kicked my arse...

My husband and I will be moving to the Madison area in the beginning of June from Houston, TX. He will be starting grad school at UW-Madison.Anyone know of a good fall marathon in Wisconsin? I would love to start training as soon as we get up there. I checked a running calendar on badgerlandstriders.org and it looks like we're missing several marathons by not being there in May! Also, I would love to run with a group, particularly on the weekend. Anyone have any suggestions? We will be living in the sticks north of Madison, so I probably won't make it into town except for on the weekends. Thanks!

Thanks for the info... I'll check them out. I'm really looking forward to checking out the Wisconsin running scene. Houston is so freaking hot, the cooler weather will be a welcome change. The running in the snow will be interesting, though!

Hi all, I've been keeping up with the reading here in Wisconsin land but I haven't posted in awhile. Welcome Texan to Wisconsin - UW Madison is really awesome and lots of good running events. Running in the snow is so fun - you will welcome spring and summer with open arms Jennifer/Grandma's Gal - how are things coming for you? I read your updates now and again - you sound to be doing wonderful!!! As for me, I've taken up power/vinyasa yoga and it has done wonders for my abs and my running. My long runs are between 8 and 10 miles but I've cut back from those because my IT bands have been bothering me. And the rest of you, I enjoy reading the comments about Crazy Legs, the South Shore Marathon, etc. Keep it coming!! Best, ------------------ Jenn

Hey Everyone!!!The sun is finally out!! I am so sick of running in the rain and the wind. I am hoping to have a great warm run tonight. Training for Grandma's is going pretty good. I had a couple rough runs where I was trying some different fueling things and they completely backfired on me. Now I think I have that all under control. I am in a stepback week and so 14 miles for my long run this weekend. Then the final big one next weekend of 20 miles (hoping to get more like 21). As of today 31 more days. Oh boy the nerves like to kick in every once and a while. Almost to the point of just wanting to get this over. Hope everyone is having great training

I live just over the line in Dubuque, IA. I get to Madison quite often and love to run in the Arb and the Picnic Point/campus area. Don't race very often, but in the last couple of years I've done the Jingle Bell run and the Valentine's Day 5K on the UW campus. Used to live up north in Rib Lake, coached a high school cross country & track team when I was there.
