Hi all! I am new to this website, and am happy to see so many WI runners! I'm from Eau Claire and just signed up for the Mad City Marathon in May. I'm getting nervous, thinking maybe I should have just signed up for the 1/2. Any advice?

Hey Jennifer,

Thank you for the update re the Snowball 5K in Eau Claire. I'm in the midst of a busy semester but I considered going. What type of construction, I wonder? The 29 bypass?

Yes, I'm considering the 1/2 marathon in Chippewa. What hill is a killer? Actually I don't have a clue what the course is except I think it goes down Wheaton Street.

I'm glad to hear that your marathon training is coming along! I can't imagine!!

Eau Claire has lots of options for running. Just google Indianhead Track Club - they are a club in that area that lists most of the local races plus I think that they have a running group that goes out running in the morning.

Best,

Jennifer,

I don't know who that advice on Eau Claire was directed to - I thought the person from Eau Claire was concerned with clubs but instead about the Mad City marathon, which I am totally unqualified to give advice about.

I do want to say your story about the Frigid 8 in Chippewa (on your blog - yes I'm nosy) was so inspirational - you truly have a great attitude It made my day!

Jenn-I think the construction at Sacred Heart Hospital is what cancelled the race. They are adding on and so there is a lot of stuff going on there. The people that I have talked to about Pure Water days Half say that the course goes up the “West Hill”. Which I consider a big hill but I don’t like hills at all so they all look big to me. I’m glad you liked the blog, I like to think it keeps me honest in my running adventure.

Shuff-Welcome to the group!! I live just 30 miles north of you. What kind of training plan are you doing for the Marathon??

Have a great day!!

Jennifer,

I bet you're right about the Sacred Heart construction. Well, that's a bummer, even though I didn't think that I would run that.

I do think it's the West Hill for the Rogge 1/2 marathon. I just looked at the times from last year and everyone that ran it was like 1:30 to 2 hours and I think that it would take me an eon to finish so I don't know if I want to risk being 12 miles behind everyone

Are you going to run the race at the beginning of March in Chippewa? I may but I might also have a big project due around that time so I don't if I'll make it up.

Jennifer-
I am not currently doing any specific training program, and was hoping to find some good advice here! I am thinking I may just do the 1/2, my longest run so far has only been 11 miles and I have never been in a race. I would like to do the full marathon, but am not sure if that is realistic.
Another question- do you weight train at all? I've heard it can help, especially with the knees. Just curious.
Thanks!
Shannon

Jenn-I have put the Chilly Chippewa Race on my calender for March but that is right in the middle of basketball Tournament time and so depending on how the teams do I might be working that weekend. The only good thing is that usually tournament time means night games.

Shannon-I am using the Hal Higdon (Novice) Marathon Training program and so far so good. But I really won’t be able to tell you how good the program is until June 17th. As for weight training I like to do a variety of things. For my legs I stick with the lunges and squats. Arms are more push-ups. I also like to focus on core strength too. I have seen that my endurance has improved with the weights. It used to be that when I came back from a long run my whole body would feel tired but now it’s just more in my legs.

Sweetiemfw-Welcome to E.C. What are you going to school for?

Well it’s finally snowing here today!!! I have been waiting for the normal WI winter weather to come and I think it’s here. To bad we are supposed to be back in the 40’s by next week. Not saying that I don’t like the temps, I just don’t like the melting with the re-freeze over night. Just makes for really slippery morning runs. Although the TM and I are starting to get along a little better.

Jennifer,

I'd like to get another 5K in because I haven't run one (or a race for that matter) since November. What marathon are you doing and when? Or are you beginning to train for one?

We're not getting snow where I am - in fact, it's 40 today and just beautiful weather for a run except my husband and I got snowshoes for Xmas and haven't been able to use them

So weight training has been helpful for running? I didn't do any cross training but now with my hectic schedule I incorporated pilates on days off and it has helped my arms and abs stay loose and connected during my runs.

Thanks Jen - posted jan 19 "We're not getting snow where I am - in fact, it's 40 today and just beautiful weather for a run except my husband and I got snowshoes for Xmas and haven't been able to use them" 2 days later we got 7 inches of snow in SE wisc. For 30 consecutive days we had no snow and above normal temps. Enjoy your snowshoes. hahahahaha

Steve-I think for the first time us in the north have a lot less snow than the south. Have fun with it!!

I sent my registration in for Grandma's Marathon and should know by the end of the week if I am in. Training so far has been going good. I did 7.5miles on the TM this weekend and it was great. I think if I would have been outside I could have gone forever. But I will stick to the plan so I don't get myself injured.

Hope everyone is doing great!!

I am formerly from Racine, Wisconsin and still have family and friends there and in Green Bay. I used to love the lakefront area of Milwaukee. Go Packers.

The Whistlestop is really a great race. I ran it last year (only my second one) and had a great time. It is pretty much all down hill and the wind is mostly to your back. The trail can be a little rough at times but since it is an old railroad track, all inclines and declines are gradual. I'd run it this year but my friend is getting married that day. Good Luck!

Hi Steve and Jennifer and everyone else,

Wow, I'm so overwhelmed with the work that I have these upcoming months that I haven't been able to get out and get running but I did today and it was 45!!! It was rainy but it was warm I felt so good at the end, too!!

No snowshoeing yet but that's alright! I'm helping my husband diet and in the process I've lost 3 pounds, which is good because I was a lot smaller when I worked full time and all of my nice clothes are about a size smaller so it's nice that there's a bit of room for my gut to breathe

JENNIFER - WOW, Grandma's Marathon - that will be awesome!! I'm really excited for you I don't think I could finish a 10k with my training lately.

Ok back to doing work but I'm glad everyone is doing well and to all that just joined the Wisconsin board: WELCOME!

Jennifer,

I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU!! (And nervous - well because I would be nervous: ) )

When is the marathon? I would LOVE to make it up to Duluth just to watch the marathon and hang out up there because I haven't been in ages.

I'm trying to convince my sister to run that 5k in Chippewa at the beginning of March so we'll see.

Again, congratulations!!!

Jennifer - Woohoo for Grandmas Marathon. In my opinion it is one of the top 3 greatest marathons EVER! I'm registered. good luck in training, keep in touch. see you at the spaghetti dinner.

Ray - Lucky you - you moved from Racine. I stikll being held hostage here. Nah, I shouldn't make it sound so bad. My family still its roots planted and we're fairly comfortable with the city and all it has to offer. (lighthouse run and Spirit of Racine Triathlon).

MrClean - did you run Freeze for Food? Ia tttempted to show up for the race. But...I got stopped by state trooper for speeding near Lake Mills. After I got my ticket (ouch) i could still get there by 1pm for 10K, but i made wrong turn and went down the aboretum drive. Finally I found my way to the Shelter and was 13 min late. I ran the course for a workout with no race number. Was kinda bummed about it. But things happen. I think i ran about 600 other races without incident- so i was bound to happen. I should've planned better. Nice little event thought and i liked the course. The weatehr wasn't bad consider that we got 8" of snow down in Racine.

Another vote for the Chilly Chippewa 5k - I'm the race director and this year's race is looking to be the best ever. Next year we are adding a 10k race to coincide with the 5k - 10k course will go through Irvine park and back to Chi High. If you have questions e-mail me at skifstrb@chipfalls.k12.wi.us

Thanks, Roger

Jennifer - Do you have you room booked for Grandmas yet? Grandma's if my favorite so far.

I booked mine last June. You can always stay at the dorms.

I did not read the whole thread - so you may have covered this already.

Most all of WI Marathons are good events in one way or another (I can not vouch for Lake Geneva).
* Trail Breaker Waukesha - early season - low key
* Pine Line Meford- flat - easy - early - low key
* Lake Geneva ?
* Journeys Eagle River - Rolling hills 1st 1/2 - Best small marathon IMO (<200 people)
* Green Bay - Flat - Fast - Concrete - Lambeau Field
* Mad City - I have not run - afraid of the possible heat
* Paavo Nurmi - Hurley - Hilly - not a PR course - but fun
* Fox Cities (Appleton) - Fairly fast - nice event (A few problems in 2005)
* Milwaukee - Very well run - fast - but not competely flat - PR course
* Whistle Stop - Ashland - Big net Downhill - Crushed Limestone easy on joints

We are so blessed in WI - 10 marathons to choose from and the Packers (True Love is unconditional)

Some year it would be fun to do all 10 in the same year - If Lake Geneva and Journey's would cooperate like 2005 - not like 2006.

Any veterans have opinions of Lake Geneva?

Madison, WI.

Hi all. I did not run that freeze for food run. Other things just got in the way. ( lame excuse) I am going to do the Like Mills Triathlon. First Tri ever.........freaking out a little. I paid my entrance fee so no turning back now. It should be fun. I know I can cover the distance, how fast is another story. It's a 1/4 mile swim-----15 mile bike-----and a 3 mile run. I am open to any advice given.

Thanks,
Jan

I'm from Wisconsin! YAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!!

Okay, not really that enthusiastic about it, but whatever.
I am from Milwaukee County, in an itty bitty town not far from Racine. That's about as descriptive as I can be given my current mental state of sleeplessness (South Milwaukee-Cudahy, WI).

I'm not currently running (due to a longggggggg string of eating disorders and related and unrelated injuries and health problems) but I'm dancing and hopefully will return to running (and with that, soccer, rugby and tennis) between the end of February and the end of April.

so yaaaay.
