Who is doing Bellin Run in Green Bay.

Ran the course this morning (by my house) as part of a 9 mile run. Always frustrates me that on my Garmin (and bike) the last 1.2 mile come out as 1.23 miles with only 2 turns when rest of course is pretty much right on. I know it is certified but that .03 is 10 seconds extra.....Hmmnnn. Oh well, certified is certified.

My understanding is that certified courses actual add a very small overage as "Shortage Insurance"

A post by AndyHass-
All certified marathon courses include a Short Course Prevention Factor... I believe it is 1/10th of 1% added on to guarantee it's over the minimum length.

Maybe - Maybe not for Bellin.

Enjoy - I hope its great weather - Its always fun to see the fast locals show up and perform.

Is it possible they add that tad of extra distance right at the end???? Even the last .2 is a tiny bit long. The 6 mile mark to finish is .21. I ran it 3 times with Garmin and biked it at lunch today and .21 every time. Weird!

lets see 1 mile = 1.609 KM
so 10 km / 1.609 = 6.215 miles

Not exact, but a 10k is not 6.2 miles

More precise 1 meter is 39.37008 inches
10,000 meters is 373,700.8 inches
12 inches to a foot = 32,808.4 feet
5280 feet to a mile = 6.2137 miles to 10,000 meters

even my earlier - short course insurance of .1 of 1% = .001 x 6.2137 = .0062 of a miles x 5280 = 32.74 extra feet. at 7 minutes per mile that would add 2.6 seconds to your time.

I will be running the Bellin Run this year. I ran it last year and it was the most fun i have had running in years. The huge crown is great. I hope the turn out is the same this year.

I ran the course last Wednesday for a temp workout. My house is about a mile from the start. I had my Garmin but i really did not pay attention to the final distance for the course.

I looked at the weather report for this weekend and it is looking pretty good.

I hope to break 40 mins. What is your goal for the race?

Orion,

We live pretty close to each other. I also live close to the course start/finish on Grignon St.

My long term goal is to break 40 min. but it is a challenge on my 20-25 miles per week. Last year I did 41:03 at Bellin. I for sure want to break 41 min (for first time).

Good luck

Did my first couple of runs Monday and Tuesday in my new north Appleton neighborhood. It's a lot more hilly up there than I realized, whjich makes for some good training.

It's only been 17 days since Green Bay, but I'd say that I'm probably 90% recovered. Legs still felt a little heavy last night when I ran a couple of miles around 7:30 pace, but they're coming along.

Busy moving this weekend, so no Bellin Run for me. Out of town for the Bret Younger run in July, so I probably won't be racing until the Grunski Runski in August.

What's everyone else up to?

Call out for WI runner Tagenkamp - Setting the American Record 8:07.07 in the 2 mile at Prefontaine Classic. Finishing the race 3rd He looked like he could have reached a little bit deeper if it had been close for the win - I am hugely impressed with Mottran - he made 8:03.5 look easy for the win.

Curious to know for those who did Bellin Run if weather affected their time. I expected to break 41 min but did 41:19. Unable to hold pace last couple miles because HR was taking off because of sun/heat beating on us. Beautiful day but a tad warm to get best time. Agree????

Man it has been hot lately. I love it except for running!!

Tchuck - sorry you did not meet your goal. I find I do not do well at races when it is over 55-60 degrees. But I am also a wimp in the heat.

I agree with the Bellin Run heat post. It really hit me around mile 4, and when I finally got back into my groove around mile 5 with shade, I totally wiped out watching out for crossers at the water station and not a crack in the road.

This was my first time back running it after a 5 year break, and was amazed by all the kids. Im all for kids training and running in this thing, but found many were missing race etiquette - starting in big groups in too fast of pace mainly, and blatantly just stopping in the middle of the road, then heading to the water stations. Found that hindered my time more, but after talking to other runners, heard they thought there were even less kids this year, and you just learn how to avoid them.

Plus those 10 year olds flying by me - grrrrr

.

Kindof want to, but its the same day as what I think is the fastest 10k in WI - Otto Grunski Runski - Tough choices. The great thing about Paavo is that if you finish in the top 10 men or top 5 women - its free entry the next year. One of my local friends is running it for the 10th time in a row this year - 9th free year.

Anyone here have a good 4th of July race? All of the usuals around here have been cancelled this year.

It has been hot, but I feel like I am finally getting a little bit acclimated. I did a track workout last night in the soup and it was a lot of fun.

Anyone doing the Take A Step 5k race in Stevens Point on July 17th? Myself and a few friends live in the area and are going to do it. We're all high schoolers but like running with any other runners and figure that would be a good event to try.

Well, it looks like no one has posted here for awhile...

Runninlaw, I ran a 10K on the 4th, got injured, and have been sidelined since. I threw my back out two weekends before the fourth, took a few days off running, then it was sore, but training didn't seem to bother it, as long as I laid off the speed work. Did a 40 mile week the week before, then took off a couple days before the 4th. I should have gotten a clue when I warmed up... my right thigh and hip really hurt. But this was the yearly hometown tradition (Milton Independence Day 10K), and I missed it last year, so I did it anyway. All went well until 5 miles. I was on about a 7-minute pace, started to push it because a rival I usually beat in this race was ahead of me, but still within reach, then wham! The thigh/leg tightened up to where I could hardly walk. I did walk a block, then forced myself to finish (dumb :rolleyes : ), about 4 minutes off my normal 10K pace.

Afterwards I could hardly walk. I think it is something with the sciatic nerve. Been to the doc twice, see sports med. doc tomorrow. Since then the few times I tried to run it's OK starting out, then after a time (first 1.5 miles, then as short as three blocks) the leg would seize up. So I stopped completely last Wednesday, then Monday night I was able to do 4 miles without too much pain. I hope I haven't jeapordized my Fall marathon (Lakefront - Milwaukee)....

Hope everyone else's summer has been going better.

Yikes Larry - that stinks!!! Hopefully you will have plenty of time to recover before Lakefront - but don't jump in too quickly once you start feeling better.

The sports med doc is a Wis. Ironman finisher. He finished last year after having a tibial stree fracture during training. He is great! Understands runners and knew just what was wrong with me. The right half of the pelvis got rotated forward and shifted down, amking the right leg seem longer. He sent me right to PT, set me up for a month ore of PT. He said there is no reason I shouldn;t be able to do Lakefront, but "don't expect a PR".

That was over a week ago. I've been doing the exercises they give me. I feel a lot better. Did 8 miles on Sunday and Tuesday, then 11 last night (Thursday). Will do short recoveries next two days, then see if I can get back on or close to the programmmed run sunday (16 miles). I'll probably try to get back on schedule with the mileage, but skip the speedwork until 100% or close.

About 4 miles east of Whitewater is the Kettle Moraine South. If you like running hilly trails, you can't get much better than this. If you go to the Wisconsin DNR website you can get maps.

The country roads south and east of town are not too bad for running. I've never run in town but there is a college there, and I know they have a cross-country course, and a lot of shady residential streets.

If you want to run rail trails, just drive over to Fort Atkinson, there is a 17 mile "Glacial River" trail, some paved, some crushed rock on an old rail bed. Or drive up to Jefferson and get on the "Glacial Drumlin" trail, north of town. You can run East to Waukesha or West to Cottage Grove (or continue through Madison all the way to Dodgeville). Mostly crushed rock rail beds. I'm sure they are free for runners.

Have fun!
