Hello, everyone. I haven't posted in ages and I also haven't run in ages. Last year I accomplished my goal of running the 1/2 Easter Bunny in the Fox Cities. Soon after I quit running. I am now looking to start again but have ABSOLUTELY NO MOTIVATION to get out of bed at 5:45 like I used to and run. I think I have to start at square one with 2 mile runs again.

Any advice? The closest race club is the Pacesetters (I'm in New London) and I couldn't make any of their running times but I used to do five days a week in the am. Has anyone found a running coach? Is that worthwhile? I don't know anyone who runs more than a mile or two. They all think I'm a little crazy for wanting to run 1/2 marathons.

I'd appreciate any advice from any local Wisconsinites!!

Thanks

Don't loose your mental edge now, Mikey! You will do awesome!! Good luck tomorrow - I wish I was out there with you all - and I would be extraordinarily pumped if I thought I could pull off a 3:10!!

Have fun - I look forward to your race report. The weather looks PERFECT!!!

Go into your local running store and ask them about groups. I'm not familiar with the New London area, but I know there are 2 stores in Madison that have significant groups. Find a race coming up that sounds interesting to you and make it your goal. I find if I have something to work for, I am much more motivated. Make up a training schedule, stick to it and enjoy!!

Anyone do Green Bay Marathon???? 29 degree wind chill at start. 80 degrees yesterday.

I did half. I liked the cool weather and PRd in 1:30.47 on my measly 20-25 miles per week. Any other solid performances??

when you say you can't make their running times, do you mean pace or time?? I'm not an early morning person so the 5:30 in Menasha 6:00 Neenah can be hard, but they are very predictable and you can pick them up later in the route. If you've not run in awhile, you may not know about the Saturday morning runs, they are a little later.(the pace a little faster, I'm told).

When I say I can't make the Pacesetter's times, I mean that I can't run when they do because I live and work over a half hour away so their runnng groups meet when I'm not available.

I'm also sure their pace is much quicker than I am. I used to average 9 min. miles before. Now I'm sure I'm much slower.

Thanks for the responses, though.

The fox cities marathon training runs should be starting soon, I sometime run with them even when I'm not planning to run the race because the start time is later 6:45 (I swear that's earlier than previous years, though ). Lots of different paces, lots of people to run with, and I definitely know that there is a least one person that commutes from New London. Every other week starting June 3. They have water, bananas and bagels available, makes training easy when you just have to plan on grabbing you shoes and getting in your car.

Tchuck,

I did the GB half too. I PR'ed but only because it was my first time attempting a half. My husband and I were undertrained....our longest run/walk was 7 miles so we knew we had to be safe and conservative to avoid finishing injured. We ' warmed up' for the first 3 miles by alternating a ten minute walk with a 5 minute run but we were soon frigid so we aborted our plan and transitioned to a run 3 walk 2 pattern and then a walk 2, walk 3.... Our goal was to finish without injuring ourselves and to have fun. We finished in 2 hour and 57 minutes so we took our time to enjoy the course and neither of came out of it injured...sore, but not injured.

I had so much fun. I loved seeing the people on the streets clapping and cheering. Of course, I wish it could have been warmer but what the heck..I loved seeing the diversity of the people..some slim, some not, some were smooth and gliding and other were plodding but everyone was still out their doing their thing. It was an awesome first time!

I did the GB full. Boy was it cold. I had an old sweatshirt over my t-shirt that I was planning on dropping once I got warmed up and I did warm up a lot around mile 7 but boy did I pay for dropping that sweatshirt. I trained running along the lakefront, all winter, with wind, but I was never as cold as I was running that full yesterday. It was MISERABLE. I finally stole a zippered sweatshirt from my family around mile 20, and I was glad I did and wished I had earlier. I think the first half of the course was a lot better than the second. Along the rest of the course (half and full split up around mile 11), there really wasn't anyone cheering us on anymore and the quality of the water stops really dropped. When I got to the second half water stops people working them barely stopped talking to eachother long enough to hand me some gatorade much less have it poured. And from mile 22 to the end (when you are the most tired and not paying attention to anything but finishing), all of the people, I saw, that were supposed to be taking care of the cars at intersections the runners were going through were either sitting down and talking to friends or not paying attention to the runners at all (one guy was messing around with his son, I am all for family time, but not when I have to dodge a buick so I can get to mile 24 during a planned race). And when I got to the finish, just under 5 hours, (they were supposed to have things up for seven hours and I finished WAY WAY before that) they had all the chairs and tables stacked up so people couldn't sit down. The last thing I want to do when I finish a marathon is have to look for a chair or sit on parking lot concret.

I really did like and enjoy the race, you can't do anything about weather, and I will do the race again, but I was just really disappointed in the second half quality of the race workers and how the finish was handled. It was a big let down after having so much for the first half of the race.

Be sure to give this feedback to the race directors.

I did the GB 1/2. Have been plagued with IT and knee problems for the last month, so had to give up any sort of speedwork and/or time goal. Came in at 2:08:43 (10 seconds less and I would have PR'd - darn!) It was dang nasty cold! My fingers went completely useless and numb despite my little gloves. I had a doozy of a time getting my Shot Bloks out of my little pocket and working the bag open!

My family and I did GB as a charity run for the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, and we managed to raise about $2800 in the process - so that was one definite positive that came out of it. Also, an old friend called me out of the blue the day before and told me that he was running the half, so I actually did have someone to run with. (The rest of my family & friends were entered in the 5k.)

Overall, I'm satisfied with how I ran - didn't aggravate any of my injuries and did a good job of gradually building my pace. I'll likely do Fox Cities again this fall and try to shoot for sub-2:00. In the meantime, really looking forward to Bellin!

What a beautiful morning to run in Neenah WI - 49F (5:00am) - Light winds. To be this is ideal weather for training - What did you do with it?

I did a 10 mile recovery run - just enjoyed the morning.

Good running to all -

What did I do yesterday in that nice weather, you ask?

I did a 5K race at my son's old preschool. I was bummed pre race because once again I have a nasty head cold. The good news is that I ended up with a PR anyway! It was a hilly route, but a fast course. The weather was ideal and I strode in at 21:16 (the clock said 21:09, but I think they forgot to start it right away). I felt strong and no one passed me once I got going. I even caught a guy during the last 200 meters. My husband also PRed with a 22:49 - almost a 2 minute PR!!!

Our kids did the mile with my parents and were so excited to earn ribbons! In the raffle we won a Bucky Book and a $20 gift certificate to a local pizza place. Oh yeah, and I got some hardward for being 2nd woman o/a in the 5K! Not too shabby! Gotta love small races!!!

Another great morning for running in NE Wisconsin with sunny skies and temps around 50 degrees!

Still not 100% recovered from GB last weekend, so I kept it short and slow again this morning, with the goal of easing back into my pre-race training routine over the next 2-3 weeks. Looking ahead to this summer and fall, and I'm thinking about maybe trying the Antigo Tater Trot 10K in August. Anyone have any experience doing this race??

tts, if you can make it to the Waupaca Kmart parking lot at 5:30 p.m. Mondays, you're bound to find a few folks with whom to run. See the calendar listing in Silent Sports from a couple months back for contact info.

Chad - I have run the Tater Trot - Not as fast as the Runski - But a fun race.

Mile 1- about 3 are dead flat then you have a decent, but not killa uphill and downhill to mile 4 then flat to the finish. The only other unusualy thing is there is 1/2 mile through a potatoe field dirt road about 4.5-mile 5. Not as good traction, but not aweful.

I give the Runski a 9 out of 10 for fast courses (Too many turns to get a 10, but flat enough) I give the tater trot a 8.0 out of 10 - less turns, but a decent hill and a dirt road. I give Bellin a 8.0 for course, but have to bump it up to a 8.5 because of all the people to pace adn run with.

Thanks, Mike. Like I told you the other day, I really don't even like running 10Ks, but otherwise I don't have any races to run until the Cheeshead in September.
