WI Winter is finally here - BRRRRRR! I have turned into a wussy and will continue to enjoy the warmth of the Treadmill. Although I may run outside 5:45 am Sunday(-10F) with the group just to remind me why I am happy to pay for the YMCA membership.

Yeah, I hit the 'mill late last night. When I do, it's as a last resort. I just couldn't get out earlier in the day.Speaking of the deep freeze we're entering, I'm a bit concerned about classic skiing 40K at the Badger State Games in Wausau tomorrow. I could be out there for 4 1/2 hours! If I were planning a run, I'd have the good sense to get back indoors sooner than that. Anyone else doing a BSG event this weekend?

jtpaten - Good luck at BSG - 9 mile ski area is fairly shelters from the wind - stay warm and let us know how it was. I have not skied there in many years, but ran some of the trails a few times last summer.

Hey Todd thought about the 5K, that will be at the end of my 3rd week coming back and I am in the middle of base training. I am cold fish about it right now. It would be a good chance to spot check my current fitness level, but I already know my current fitness level sucks. I may wait until the Point Bock 5 miler to do a fitness check.

It is nice to see where you are at,especially a 5K. I base my training paces off of current 5K race pace. I know I am a bit slower because of a few lbs of winter fat and more clothes but how much slower????? I run my tempos 50 - 60 sec. off my current 5K time and long runs about 2 min. slower. Also, it lets me know where I am at compared to last year. Last year's race if I remember correctly was around 20 degrees. This year it may be 0-5 degrees. I finished 3rd in my age group last year. If colder, less may show up and I can place even higher. But then again, the diehards are the stronger runners. ------------------ My Profile

RunForFun, BSG wasn't as bad as it could have been. The 40K races were cancelled due to the weather so the dozen or so of us who were signed up for that distance joined the 20K skiers. It was a good thing, too, because the windchill was well into the double digits. Half way through the second and final lap, my face mask had fallen off and my grip wax was failing me. I couldn't have gone twice as far.I'm not sure why, but I'd much rather ski than run in weather like that. But there was a piece on the local news about a Green Bay Marathon training group out on Saturday morning that made me feel like a slacker. When it turned even colder yesterday, I got on the Nordic Track. With -30+ windchill today, I will probably resort to a 'mill at the gym today. Hate to do it but the alternative -- to run outdoors -- would be just too brutal.

Jtpaten - I would guess that low moisture snow causes a lot more friction - wearing your wax off fast. Not me - I used to be a manly-man. Now I embrace the TM

Did the DePere Valentine's Day run. It was cold - -2 degrees at start I believe. Thank god there was only a light wind but I still froze an area of my body that I don't wish on anyone. I did 40 sec. better than last year so I feel good where I am it compared to last year.I finished first in my age group but am bummed I finished in 20:01. At the end of mile 2, I knew I didn't have enough kick to break 20 min. Well, I picked it up enough but the finish line jumped out at me and my normal 100M sprint was only 40yds after the last turn. Oh well, still hit my goal of 20:15. How did you guys do??? Todd ------------------ My Profile [This message has been edited by Tchuck (edited Feb-10-2007).]

I did the Valentine's DePere run too. It was hard to get going because the cold made my calves tight and my feet numb. Finished in 21:35- good enough to win my age group. A big improvement from last years 24:05! Happy running everyone!

Fun, but crowded. I don't like that you start at the square and end at CR. That's a long walk either way, before or after, depending on where you parked.

Well the last week has been great!!! But now it looks like another CRAP weekend coming up! I'm scheduled to do a 20 miler Sunday, will probably have to do it indoors like my last one three weeks ago (-30F windchill). I really hate that. I try to break it up by doing 5 mi t-mill, 5 mi indoor track, etc, etc, but it is still tedious, hot, and I don't feel like I get the same workout as doing this distance outdoors. I was hoping to push it to 21-22 outside this time.Is it just me, or have we had more than our share of crappy weather this winter (south central WI)??? the last couple years, it seemed like most major storms went south or north of us, this year we've been right in the middle of the heaviest snow of every storm passing through! I've had enough, already! Sorry for the rant.....

Wow. The calves are definitely burning after running through all the snow today. We're scheduled to get a lot more tonight as well. Good luck with everyone's runs this week!

LOL! I hear you Larry! i just did my 20 miler in Madison. Holy cow was that a workout! It was a VERY slow run as we were running through 8 inches of snow on unplowed streets for a decent portion of it. I was somewhat fun hurdling 2 foot snow piles from time to time...nice to feel like a 12 year old once in a while! I did find out some good info though for those of you in the Madison area: while the city takes forever to plow (they wait until all the snow stops until they even start so the residential streets are a disaster until very late), the bike paths and university paths (lake shore, etc.) are IMMACULATE and were by 8 am this morning! I couldn't believe it. So if you need to get a run in with the snow, check the bike paths first! Spring is coming - it HAS to be, right - PLEASE?!

I really enjoyed the 2006 WORS (Wisconsin Off-Road Series) Trail Run Series, but things aren't lookin' good for 2007. There were nine races last year; only five this year with only one guaranteed to take place. The series seems to continue to suffer as an afterthought to the WORS mountain biking series. Here's what was posted last week at http://trailrun.wors.org/ "As WORS Trail Run Series heads into year five it faces serious challenges to its existence. WORS Trail Run Series Director for the last three years, Cassie Gran, resigned after the completion of the 2006 series and a meeting was conducted to pass control to new directors who subsequently reconsidered and informed WORS in December they would not be heading up the series. With WORS in the midst of putting together its mountain bike series and 2007 racer handbook, a tentative trail run schedule was put together and all other matters related to WORS Trail Run Series were put on hold. "So at this point WORS is still looking for a new trail run series director and is working on getting local support for the five events on its trail run schedule. ... It is our hope that the shortened schedule will increase turnout at each event. Unfortunately, with Cassie’s departure, the trail run series sponsorship relationships that she formulated over the past two years will need to be re-established. We will be posting updates to this website as trail run details are figured out. "It is WORS sincere hope that we can continue to produce trail runs, but at this point we can only guarantee that there will be a trail run at the Subaru Cup on August 19th and that we will try to present a five race series for 2007 beginning with a run at Nine Mile Forest in Wausau on June 3rd." So, does anyone know of a potential race series director willing to swoop in and save the series? Here's the WORS trail race schedule (5K & 10K courses) for 2007: #1 Nine Mile Forest Chase Trail Run Sunday, June 3rd, 2007 Nine Mile Forest Wausau, Wisconsin #2 Firecracker Off-Road Trail Run Sunday, July 1st, 2007 Eau Claire Co. Expo Center Eau Claire, Wisconsin #3 Reforestation Ramble Trail Run Sunday, July 15th, 2007 Reforestation Camp Suamico, Wisconsin #4 Crystal Ridge Scramble Trail Run Sunday, August 5th, 2007 Crystal Ridge Franklin, Wisconsin #5 Nordic Mountain Adventure Trail Run Sunday, August 19th, 2007 Nordic Mountain Mount Morris, Wisconsin

QUESTION FOR METRO MILWAUKEE RUNNERS!I live in West Allis and want to know if there is a local track (high school or other) that is open to the public for running? I run in the VA park and use Bally's in the winter but enjoy being outside running also and do not want to stop at every 5th intersection for cars all the time (though it is a nice way to get to know the town). Any local suggestions? I am not from here originally. Thanks!!
