Ellabee - I will agrue with anyone that Jouneys Marathon for having @ 140 finishers is the best run very small marathon around. It was my 1st marathon and still my most enjoyable - But I enjoy the solitude of nature compared to the city and big crowds. I say - Go for it ! I would think about it again - just to have a victory steak dinner at Blink Bonnies - oooooooh-yaaah is that good food.

Forgot to say in yesterday's post that I have decided the Pine Line will be my first marathon on April 28, 2007. Small, but flat, close to where I live, and they stay open til everyone finishes. No medals, apparently, but I can live with that. I will have 3 HM's under my belt by then. Planning to do half or full in Green Bay late May, and probably Whistle Stop in October.

WI MTP - Yes, I've enjoyed the 2 Journeys halfs I've done...I agree on it being a well-run, albeit small, race. I too enjoy the relative "alone" time, which is one reason I thought that would be a good race for my 2nd full. Plus, while we only live an hour away from Eagle River, this year we stayed at a nice, cozy little motel in St. Germain the night before and really enjoyed not having to worry about the longer drive. Never stuck around for the after-race meal though, but perhaps next year will be different. Thanks for the tip!

ellabee - Blink Bonnies is not part of the marathon - But it is on the main road that travles between St Germain and Eagle River - But actually 1-2 miles west of St Germain. If you go, get there early (5:00Pm) or you will be sitting at the bar drinking a long time before a table is ready.Gregorsa - Good for you. I have not done Pine Line yet - I thought about it in 2006, but it did not work out. If I do not do Boston in 2007, I may do it or just wait and do Green Bay.

Anyone else do the Cheese Chase 10K in Monroe on Saturday 9/16? It's for their semi-annual Cheese Days Festival. It's the toughest 10K I run on the road. Starting about 3 miles there's a 1.5 miles that consist of three long, steep hills one right after the other, then another gradual uphill for mile.I sure didn't set a 10K PR, but I did PR the course by almost three minutes (third time I've run it), and took 3rd place in my age group. The prize was a pound of cheese! After the race, they have free Berghoff's beer, cheese sandwiches, and fruit while they give ou the awards. The turnout was good: 289 in the 5K, and 125 in the 10K. Overall it's a good time, I recommend it in 2008! They do still have a race on years without Cheese Days (Berghoff Blues Festival instead), not sure if they run the same course. In the past, Berghoff had an annual 10 race in October, but the course was less challenging.

Sounds fun and good beer, but a little to far for me to drive - Congrats of the course PR - It proves that you are stonger.

The Monroe run sounds fun, but it is not a race weekend for me. I am doing the Home Run race in Fitchburg the next weekend. Anyone in on that or know anything about the course?I did Wo-Zha-Wa half marathon last weekend. I highly recommend it as a great training run. It is CRAZY hilly, so probably no PRs, but it is fun, well put together and a nice small race. Of course it is always beautiful in the Dells too. Can't beat the $15 entry either. It was COLD today! Would have been great, but for some reason the weather (pressure drop maybe) was causing my knee to flare up. I am not ready for winter, but I am enjoying the 50 degree runs!

Not in on that run either - 37F with 10 MPH winds this am - I wish I had grabbed warmer gloves. But other than the hands very nice weather for a run - shorts - T + Long sleave T. I am not a big fan of winter either - More for the ice than anything.

runninlaw: I don't know about the Home Run on 9/30, but it looks like the same area as the Berbee Derby on Thanksgiving. If so, the course is sort of hilly. This weekend, 9/23, I'm doing the Zoo Run at Vials Park in Madison, 10K. The course goes around Lake Wingra, and through the arboretum. I've run it many time in the Meriter Nurses' Run in May, and other races. Nice course. The Zoo Run is new this year. It's supposed to be chip timed. These courses are a couple of miles from eachother. The Home Run goes through a residential neighborhood, and around a park. It's quite flat. I recall one tiny hill that bends left, about a mile in. I would say the Home Run course is easier than the Derby course.

GaelicTempest - Easy does it - relax.Welcome to the area - Really try to get a good night sleep on Friday night, because it sounds like you might be a little wound up Saturday night. Edgeman - You are not by chance Adam from Edgerton? Just curious - I ran my 1st marathon with Adam from Edgerton - Journeys in 2004. Good luck to all the racers this weekend!

lstall - how did the zoo run run go? I really like that loop too (I run that loop in training and did one jingle bell run). Unfortunately I had no time for races last weekend.edgeman - thanks for the info on the Home Run course. I am hoping it is not too hilly as it is my last pre-marathon "fitness test." I did a half marathon a week and a half ago (Wo-Zha-Wa) and it was ridiculously hilly, so I don't think I got a great "predictor" time.

anyone here do any of the WORS trail runs? I'm thinking of doing the Sheboygan one because I live here, but just curious about how these courses are and how they are organized or marked.

runninlaw- The Zoo Run went well, it was a pretty good time overall. Lots more people than I expected (359 in the 10K, 396 in the 5K). I finished the 10k at #62, 6th in my AG. Missed a course PR by 5 sec., but I felt pretty good about it because I'm in the middle of marathon training for Chicago and didn't taper for the race at all.The only downsides were (1) only one water stop on the 10K course at 1.5 miles, (2) not enough volunteers handling traffic (runners were getting cut off by cars by some churches between VIlas and the Arboretum), and (3) ran out of T-shirts but they did drop the entry by $5 if you didn't want a "rain check" to pick up a shirt later. Considering it was the first running, I think they did a pretty good job. I don't think they were expecting the turnout they got. ------------------ - Larry - [This message has been edited by lstall (edited Sep-26-2006).]

Hey, I finished the Fox Cities Half in 2:08:34! (It being my first, I had no goal other than to finish in under 2:10:00.) My time would have been even better if I hadn't desperately needed a 3-minute pit stop at the port-a-potty after mile 8. I thought the hill before mile 11 was easy. Of course, if I ran the whole marathon, I'd probably have something different to say about that hill. How did the rest of you do? Any PRs?MTP, I did actually manage to get a good night's sleep on Saturday night! Slept like the dead from 10pm until 5am. Probably because my 2-year-old only let me sleep about 3 hours on Friday night - she came down with a cold and kept waking up screaming! Ditto for Sunday night. Man, was I wasted yesterday. I've got achilles tendonitis now, huge bummer. Hoping it resolve quickly. I so loved the half marathon! I'm already planning to run the Green Bay half in May, and possibly the full at Fox Cities next year. Color me addicted! ------------------ http://tatertrek.blogspot.com http://www.active.com/donate/tatertrek

lstall - congrats on a good race! Yes, I can't believe how many people showed up! I bet they will get most of the kinks out by next year.doug1430 - yes, I know a few people that do these and my running club just sponsored one in the madison area a few weeks ago. I have heard they tend to be challenging courses and depending on who puts them on, the courses may not be that accurate. In mid August there was one in the Devil's Lake area and apparently the 10K was about a MILE short. If you ever do the one in Middleton (the Madison area one I was referring to), don't expect a PR because it is a HARD course (I did my speed and hill training there) but it is beautiful (and it is very accurate). Gaelic Tempest - Congratulations!!! I am so glad you had a good race and met your expected goal (by a minute and a half!!). I highly recommend Green Bay if you are looking for a spring race. I did the full this year and was very impressed with how well it was put together. It is a ways off, but is anyone doing the Berby Derby this year? Hopefully it won't be as crazy cold this year!

GaelicTempest1st congrats 2nd - What I found effective for achillies - 2 - 5 gallon pails - fill one with 60% cold water - add the ice from the icemaker. Pail # 2 put very hot water in. 5 Minutes in cold, 3 minutes in hot - repeat 3-4 times. You may need to freshen up the hot water. The idea - Cold = out with the old blood, Hot = In with the new blood. Finally - I ran a poorly paced race - I was shooting for 6:15 pace and ran a 5:57 1st mile - I also was all alone mile 5-10, so I ran into the wind without help. Anyway enough whining. I had a 1 minute 16 second PR = 2:45:58 in the marathon. I had been shooting for a 2:43:XX, but the 1st mile took that away.

Hey MTP, congrats on the PR, even if it wasn't quite what you were hoping for! That wind was pretty harsh at times and certainly made the race more difficult.I will try your hot/cold bath remedy later tonight. Thanks for the tip. It's very slowly resolving itself. I have yet to run since the race but may try a very easy 2 later tonight.

thought I'd check in:nothing big. I'm working on base miles right now. Worked in my first threshold run on Friday. Lots of aches and pains this week -- must be the change in weather, my tired, old joints. MTP: looks like Scheels will be coming through with the community challenge!!! Just in time I need some winter stuff.

Nice to hear from you Sue - Anything coming up for you? I would expect maybe Point in December - Not me - I am told I have other plans.I am still recovering from the Glacial 50 miler - I am glad that I did it - always wanted to do somthing longer. But ... I am not sure 2 weeks after an all out marathon was wise and pushing it to the max the last 15 miles - Its who I am, but wow - everything is still not in the correct place. What have you heard about the Community Challenge? I have sent the marathon 2 e-mails and have gotten no reply.

just be aware of your gait, if you can feel that you are running different, maybe cross-training would be good. I remember seeing fill after his 100, running down the road (actually, DH pointed and said "there's Phil"). I didn't recognize him because after running with him occassionally over the last 3 years, I knew his form and it was overemphasized. I haven't heard a thing from the marathon staff, but my neighbor said the web is updated. I guess the breakdown last year was $100, $50, $25 gift cards. I'm a little miffed about the paper's coverage when they finally listed the community finishers. Why did they have to put the overall's name on the list? Your name should have been listed as first person in the area. They sure failed to recognize that the third person to cross the finish line lived in the community. *sigh* what can I say? Hubby's doing Frostbite. It would be interesting if I did it....but maybe not.
