Anybody around the 95 Hwy and Durango Drive area looking for some company on one or more early morning workouts each week? Mainly 30-60 min. in the mornings.

Also wouldn't mind having some company to run the loop at Red Rock.

My pace can range anywhere from 8 min/mile for a 5 K workout to a 10 min/mile pace for 20-30 K. See my profile for PBs... but I'm a little off my PB shape right now.

I don't mind slower runners (down to 10 min/mile) or faster runners (if you a willing to ease off your pace while I do my darndest).

Guys or girls... doesn't matter. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to bring them up. If you have worries, check out the Montreal Neighborhood (4 threads, going back to last November)... I've just moved to LV from there.

Take care.

Mars

Salut Mars, hope you get some running mates...otherwise, you know, Montreal is full of them. hills, rain, more rain, heat, drop dead heat, we do it all. Bet you won't be missing the winter months and our wonderful snow removal.

Tried my 2nd 15k+ slow, flat run this am..but with the problem I'm experiencing, c'est pas facile.

Have a nice weekend, regards to Mrs Mountmars...

Hey mars!

Glad to hear that you're well into your routine. Surely in the entire city there are runners that read CR forum! Not to worry, I'm sure you'll attract a great bunch to run/train with, on or off the forum.

Have a great run!

Hello,

in order to continue our concerted thread-napping effort I will post my Thursday-night hill-run report here. I am sure Mars will be the first to appreciate the course we have done yesterday.

The three of us - i.e. JB, MLC, and yours truly - started our course by going to the Parc du Mont Royal via Décarie, Queen Mary, Côte de Neige and Remembrance Road. Once in the parc I guided JB and Chops to the small but nasty secondary hill that both remebered well from a previous run with Marcel (21.7.). Hereafter, we followed our friend Olmsted to the Chalet where we turned right into one of the smaller trails which brought us back to Olmstedt near the Beaver Lake. Leaving the parc we followed the Boulvard until Belvédère which we climbed up again to Summit Cirlce (at this time I heard some protests). The rest was easy: three quarters of the summit loop then descent via Sunnyside Av., Victoria, Mira, Circle and Ponsard. So, a lot of known secions but in a unusual order and sometimes run in reverse direction.

Everybody did fine and we had a lot of fun. Much of our conversation turned around the upcoming Montreal (half) Marathon. Thanks JB and Chops for the nice run. Take care

Ralf

Hi Mars,

We miss you dearly and all hope that you will be able to hook up with new fellow LV runners as cool as us!

We are a flock without its Shepherd, but are trying to find our way ... good thing we all love each other ... Group hug ...

You guys KILL me...

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm sure some LV folks will pop up sooner or later.

I do miss the MTL gang, though. I think about you every run I'm out there. Thanks for the hill run update Ralf... nice course... devilishly difficult... my kind of run. Best of luck in the Marathon coming up next week. Remember... don't be too agressive in your first half.

If anybody from Las Vegas visits this thread... is anyone doing the Cirque du Soleil/Agassi 5 K run this upcoming Monday?

The missus is doing quite well, thank you very much.

Take care.

Mars

Hi Mars - can't believe that summer is almost over, I know its September already.. ..on this mornings run, cool for a change, I saw that leaves have started to fall, wind has knocked down branches...won't be long and we'll be layering up again - sigh.

I can't believe the amount of "stuff" as the kids would say that the bunch of us who have connected through this forum did since last winter, the hill runs, Sunday morning roll call, the Tuesday night socials..

I wish you were here next weekend to bandit along with Chops and Grommit, it would be like one of your past Shepherding duties...

Don't forget to post your race report next week..hey, you might spot some celebs..who knows ...

Take care, have a nice weekend. Df

Imagine the reaction of the first LV runner that pops up on this thread ... scritch scratch ... What are all these Montreal runners doing here?!

Wonder how long it will take us to get to 20 pages ... If we can't be with you in person, Mars, we might as well be with you in spirit.

Sniff, sniff ... don't know if there will be anyone to run with me on the mountain tomorrow morning ...

Looking forward to hearing about your first race out there.

Monday morning, Labor day, I made it over to Henderson to be part of the Cirque du Soleil 5 K, a race put on by the Cirque du Soleil folks and the André Agassi school. Yes, yes, for those who don't know, André Agassi has set-up a Prep Academy and a whole school foundation thingy. Very impressive.

After picking up my race packet, I realized during the first moments of the warm-up and stretching period that this would be a different kind of race. Indeed, I had never heard people yelling, screaming, or laughing during their stretching because, well, this was the first time I was in a race where clowns went around trying to surprise and startle runners stretching while they weren't looking. Of course, the clowns' intentions were good, but there were a few runners caught off guard. All in good fun though, as fat clowns, contortionists, sad mimes, strongmen, acrobats/gymnasts, and other characters from some of the Cirque's numerous shows in Las Vegas were present for encouragement and entertainment.

The weather is beautiful, clear, and about 90 F. I was probably 92 F or so (33 C) by the time the race started.

The group warm-up was also quite unusual, as the instructor-led routine has twin contortionists, a strongman, and hand-walkers, in the background doing their own versions of the exercises the instructor was leading the crowd through. I just know that any runner who tried to imitate what the Cirque's artists were doing is probably still in the hospital a week later. Imagine what contortionists did as hamstring stretch, or the strongman did as an arm warm-up...

I didn't come in with great expectations for this race. First, the 5 K is really not my favorite distance. Second, my training is still quite erratic these days as I try to set my work and family schedule into somewhat of a routine. And third, well, I just don't do enough speedwork to improve in a 5 K race. So... I definitely wanted to be under 25:00, but didn't think I had it in me to go into the 23:XX.

As I headed toward the starting line, I make a mental note that this is definitely the liveliest bunch I've ever seen before the start of a race. Then I see the Red Bull booth, where they were handing out free cans of the stuff, as Red Bull was a race sponsor...

As I await the horn to signify the start of the race, I can't believe all of us (close to 300) are squeezed into this tiny parking lot. The horn goes off, I'm middle of the pack, and it still takes like 20 seconds to get to the starting line. 10 m past the starting line, we are still walking. Crap... there goes 15-20 seconds right there.

We run down a street about 150 m, and then I realize that the whole race will be run on sidewalks. OMG! Yes, the sidewalks are double-width (kind of like the Parc Lafontaine sidewalks surrounding the park in Montreal), but still, the sidewalk is packed, and I spend as much time running side-ways as I do going forward. I haven't been this tightly boxed in since the start of the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon in 2001. Oh well, it is a fundraiser... who cares about the time, right? First mile in 8:51...

After a mile and change, the crowd starts thinning out a bit, and I'm thinking I can start getting into a groove. Just at that point runners are coming toward me. WTF... I see... this is a out-and-back course, and the lead runners have already passed the mid-way point. And these guys are coming fast! Can't take the chance of passing on the left and stepping into a runner coming the other way. Man... I'll never really get going. I do my best to bob-and-weave, pass the mid-way point, and try to pick up the pace. At the mile 2 marker, my second mile was done in 8:02.

I should be alone for the 3rd mile, right? No! As I've been running for about 17 minutes, the walkers, who started at the back of the pack, are coming in the opposite direction. Man-oh-man, I say to myself "I hope I finish this thing in less than half-an-hour". I went through the walkers pretty quickly though, and then opened up. 3rd mile was done in 7:14. Only 0.1 mile left, but the last 1/4 mile is mainly uphill, so the heartrate really can't go any faster. Last 0.1 in 54 seconds, for a total time of 25:01. And I had to dodge two clowns in the last 100 meters. Finished 70th out of about 295 runners.

After the race, a raffle is held for tickets to Cirque du Soleil shows, restaurants, and trips. All great stuff. Sadly, I didn't win anything. All-in-all a really fun race, despite my whining about the space and my time. This is a race where you forget about your PB, and you just go out and have fun. It'll definitely be on the schedule next year too.

Good morning Mars, wow ! quite the excitement !

Sidewalks though...oh Lord, why not on the street ? Is it because traffic can not be redirected for the time of the race ? Did you or Mrs M get any pictures of this ? Thats a nice finish time considering the lack of space to move - next year --front of the pack

Thanks for posting - enjoyable read along with my early breakfast, heading out soon to meet the boys for the 1/2 this morning.

Regards to madame, have a good week - Df

Hej, did I read rafle? I used to be good at this (won twice in Westmount). Do they do it again next year?

Ralf

P.S.: Thanks for the congratulations on my marathon. I finished way behind my plans, but I don't care too much. Much of room to improve.

Those clown and circus people images are priceless ... I loved your description of your race, which, in my opinion, you ran in fine Shepherd form ...

I will be out in Vegas working from 10/3-10/9 at the Trop. I would love to get in on a run that didn't involve out and back on the strip. I ran at Red Rocks a year or two ago, it was a trail race. My only problem is I don't have a car but I can find my way around pretty well. I am new to this site so I don't know if you can reply to me or just an open post. Either way I will check back.

Hey, Mr. FJ, we certainly could meet for one or more runs during your week in Las Vegas. Very roughly, what days, what time of day, and what distances are you looking for?

Hello there ...

Well, Mrfunnyjokes, I hope you get to run with Mars as he's a lot of fun and has great stories ... we miss him dearly in Montreal.

Mars: I considered going to the LV marathon cause I didn't want to waste the training for the Honolulu marathon ... but then I looked at the calendar, and I think I will have my kiddies that weekend ... <sigh> ... you would have had a visitor!

Many thanks to Mr. Funnyjokes for a great run on Sunday morning!

After some emails and a few cell phone calls, I went by to pick up Mr. Funnyjokes for an 8-miler in the Summerlin area. Phenomenal weather (so what else is new in Vegas...), beautiful views of Red Rock Canyon and the mountains bordering the Las Vegas valley, a 3.5 mile steady incline, some very strong wind in the first half (during the incline!), and some great conversation all made for a great run and a wonderful meeting on Cool Runners.

Mr. Funnyjokes indulged me in listening to a 15-minute lecture about the geology of the Red Rock and the surrounding mountains, I found out about how to become a stand-up comedian, and then we discussed US politics, human rights, the war in Iraq, oil prices, and the folly of SUVs.

It is clear that we are both in the right line of work for us. I could never be a comedian... I would feel compelled to get into a 10-minute explanation of a joke if the audience wouldn't get it.

After he took me out for breakfast, we left saying that we'd have to do this again when he's back in Vegas. I'll try to work on a little more speed, and he's going to try to extend his distance.

Otherwise, I'm continuing to prep for the Las Vegas marathon in early December, I'll be assisting some friends get in and out of their wetsuits in an Olympic triathlon next weekend, and the search continues for an occasional running partner in my part of town...

Take care.

Mars

Ya? Where do we sign up for that in Montreal? Do we get to pick who we assist?

Hey, just wanted to thank mountmars for taking me out on a run while I was working in Vegas. He went out of his way to pick me up and drive me to Summerlin (sp?) for a great run. I usually resign my self to one or two hellish runs on the sidewalk from Tropicana to the airport runway and back when I'm in Vegas, but not this time.
Good run & good conversation.
Thanks again, I look forward to passing on the positive running karma to visitors to the Phila. area.
