Check this out. I'm walking down the hall in my office today and peek into the boardroom to see a fellow staff member in a meeting. The client has the tech t-shirt from the 1/2 mary I just ran. As the office runner I'm asked to sit in on the meeting discuss my feelings about this years route and some of the proposed changes for next year. Cool - too bad I didn't get another shirt out of it.

Was that the Scotia? Very cool. That was a great shirt!! I feel guilty wearing it, though, since I didn't actually run it. Do they want to change the route again? This years route was new, wasn't it? What did you suggest?

Ya, it was the Scotia. Ya, I like the shirt - its a bit more stealth than the 04 version and I didn't have a red one so it all worked out good. Don't feel guilty wearing the shirt - you paid for it. They are just thinking about massaging the course to improve runner flow and to improve automobile access - they want to keep this one for a few more years.

We road the PoCo trail again today. I forgot about a number of short stretches on asphalt and a number of road crossings. Aside from the few paved sections and a stretch of sidewalk on the Mary Hill Bypass by the railway underpass its a pretty good trail. Lots of other trails link into it to so if you live in the area you could create some variety. I really want to run it. Knee is holding up well so far, maybe I'll be back in shape to give it a try next spring..

We were dropping off the page again............. Got my new orthotics and gave them a test run, so far so good!! I am thinking of running this marathon, just for fun. Has anyone done it, or know someone who has? Is anyone interested in doing it, or the half? Would be a nice weekend getaway to Vegas, at a hectic time of the year............... Hope everyone is happy and healthy!!

Cheers

I can't quite see the connection between "Death Valley" and smiling! Unless those pictures are before the race started. Other than that, looks cool.

December the temperature is around 70 degrees F. It is nice and flat, and all below sea level. I think the desert scenery is beautiful, so different from the rain forest we live in......not that I would ever want to live anywhere else.........

Sounds like fun Maureen! Probably will make that one of the to-do races on my life list...
As for me, training's going well (though difficult) with only 8 weeks more till Royal Victoria. Time really flies! I'm already getting nervous!

Tim, you will knock 'em all flat on their butts!!
Is anybody doing Run For The Cure? Seems I am on a team. In the meantime I am in a lull................new orthotics are good, but I am struggling to find the time to train, especially with the days getting shorter. I need a big kick in the butt!!
Hope everyone is well............we should never drop to page 2!!

Hi guys...looks like we dropped to the 2nd page again...how's everyone doing? Any upcoming races this fall?
Marathon training was going well until 3 weeks ago, when I came down with an injury, which made me cut back the mileage and all speedwork. I'm ok now but now with an extra long taper.
I did the Terry Fox Hometown run Sunday morning in PoCo...got the chance to see PM Paul Martin and Gordon Campbell...overall the run was kinda chaotic, with 10,000 runners, bikers, walkers, wheelchairs, and others so I didn't do as well as I expected.
Only 3 weeks till Royal Victoria....I'm getting nervous!

Hey Tim,

Sorry about the injury. But you must have a tremendous base by now; I assume you're still targeting sub-3:00 at Victoria? I wish I were running it again...

I've completely slacked off the past few months. I promised my wife no more marathons until I finish my Ph.D., but without a training schedule, I just don't wind up getting out there much. Then I took a couple of weeks completely off due to a chest cold.

I'm running a 5-mile race in late November, but there's nothing else on the calendar. If my Ph.D. status looks promising then, I might start ramping up for Boston '06, which I'm already qualified for. But I have a fair amount of getting back into shape to do (as well as dropping some pounds) before I can even begin the training program.

Hey - California runner here, but I'll be visiting Victoria and Vancouver in October (around the time of the marathon...I'm having trouble convincing by hubbie to let me run the 1/2 though, since it falls on our anniversary). Anyway, just wondering if anyone can point me to some good running spots in the area so I can just happen to plan our hotels around some good trails. Thanks.

Well, stay at the Empress, and make an event of it!

I ran the marathon last year, and it was on my birthday. My wife and I spent the night after the marathon at the Empress - we got a free room upgrade; everyone else had spent the night before the marathon.

I don't know about Victoria, other than the marathon course, which is great, but in Vancouver, probably the two best places are Stanley Park and Pacific Spirit Park.

Stanley Park is right next to downtown. You can run a 6-mile loop all the way around the seawall, or if you want topography, run on the trails through the park.

http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/parks/parks/stanley/

Pacific Spirit park is bigger, and is out by UBC. It has miles and miles and miles of forested trails. I can do a 20-mile run and never leave the park (except for a few miles on the beach!).

Enjoy!

Bob

My GF and I signed up for the Victoria marathon... hopefully I'll bump into you again there, Tim (and other Coolrunners there).

Last year, I met Bob H. by complete fluke at the check in.

Like yourself, I'm just getting over a cold, but I did manage a 16:31 5k recently, so hopefully I won't fall apart like I did last year. :-(

Who else is going Victoria?

When are you planning to arrive at Victoria? I'll be heading there early Saturday morning via coach (PCL) and ferry. arrival at about12:30-1, race kit pickup at around 1-2, hotel check in at 3-4 pm and pasta party at 6:30.
Looks like you're in shape for a 2:50 or better...2:40s perhaps?
For me I'm just aiming for a sub 3, if not, a minimum of a 3:10. It's my 1st full so I don't want to be too hard on myself...
Recover soon, have a great taper, and see you on race weekend...

I'd like to post a +/- 2:45... but I'd be plenty happy with anything under 2:50.

Tim, you'd be running about the same speed as my GF.

I am driving over... not sure exactly what time... I'm leaving Saturday and coming back Monday.

You're welcome to catch a ride... if you're interested, drop me a message at runwithme@hotmail.com

Good luck all you Victoria marathoners!!! I will be there at our Ceevac water stop. I believe we will be having runners coming through our stop 3 times so I'm so happy I can root on everyone. I decided to pass this year on running it because I wanted to do the Lake Cowichan 56km ultra instead, great day for me too.

See you all sunday!

Wow, everybody's racing this weekend but me. Instead... this weekend I get to move up into a tougher age group!

Good luck all, especially Tim - sub-3:00 on your first marathon will be incredible. I can't believe it's been I year since I ran Victoria...

We are "Are we there yet?" I think. I don't actually know most of the team members, and suspect most of them are MUCH younger than myself........... However I am quite sure it will be fun!! Good luck to the Rock Stars!!
