As noted above I'm doing the Scotia. Did the same run as Maureen around Burnaby Lake and the River in 1:35 ish. I think that was about 16 k. I'll PR for Scotia (not hard considering how I went about it last year) but my goal of a sub 2 hr isn't likely. They said 4 thousand this year - how many ran it last year - 2400?

Tamblyn, looks like about 2800 last year... not sure about this year. I just hope it isn't as bloomin' hot as last year!!

Maureen, I'm with you there - I was really surprised at how hot it was that early on a June day. It was fairly cool during my bike commute this am and I hope we get similar weather on Sunday. I'm going to try a pace band this time and see if it helps me.

I got some unwanted news today. An x-ray I had on my foot earlier in the week revealed something called avascular necrosis in a metatarsal joint. I have been told I risk fracturing bones if I continue to run on it. So, I cant do the Scotia half................ I am not going to get into how much I hate this or how down I feel, but instead I wondered if anybody is aware of anyone who might be thinking of running and wants my entry? They can have it, but I keep the shirt.......... I know I cant wear it but it will be a reminder of this experience................... ------------------ Moi!

Maureen, that really sucks all that training and to have this happen at the 11th hour. How serious is this - any thing with the word necrosis in it scares the bejesus out of me. Hope you get well soon.

That sucks Maureen ...get better soon...I did manage to find an alternate carpool...Weather this weekend calls for partly sunny skies (high 22, low 13)...a bit on the warm side but it should be ok in the morning Good luck and I hope to see some of you this weekend

Cute pix in your message, Maureen. Bogus news about the injury... attitude is a big part of injury management... think of this as "short term training variable" ;-)How long until you can run again? I'm familiar with Metarsal Stress Fractures, but not the injury you've described. For those that are running, hopefully I might bump into someone... I look something like this... http://www.bcathletics.org/photos/shau05_tn/pages/shau8k05_0027.htm -ernest

Hi all,I've been incomunicado for the past few weeks - a week in Turkey, a week in Greece, and a week in Banff. Unfortunately those weeks were also very short on miles (although I did get in a 16 miler in Istanbul), so I think I will have to bag my plan to knock those annoying 6 seconds off my half PR of 1:30:06. I will settle for anything under 1:33, beating my Scotia time of last year. But even that may not be realistic - I was training for Victoria then, doing over 40 mpw. I don't think I've topped 30 since Boston, this year, and no speedwork. :-( Maureen, really sorry to hear about your foot. Keep us updated! See the rest of you tomorrow! Oh, and btw, looks like the course changed again. Now it's out and back on 16th, instead of starting down 10th. Man, I wish they'd bypass that hill on 4th... Bob

tim... good spotting at the half... great to meet u!have met both u and bob now... you can run but you can't hide! sorry didn't get to talk with you more... i wanted to introduce you to a few people... ask some questions about your training, race, etc.... i got zoned-out scanning the results... fortunately, the didn't double dip the top 3 masters, so i moved into 2nd for my a/g. unfortunately, nike is no longer a sponser and they replaced the cool swank prizes (watches, shoes, backbacks, etc.) with hokey plaques...

I was talking to a friend who is an events manager. She tells me that the last course change was to minimize traffic management costs. I didn't mind the new course - It was nice to get a look at the leaders looping back down 16th.

yeah it was nice meeting you...I spotted your name on the results and I realized that by your race number that you were the guy next to me who was scanning the results! too bad I had to leave early.. nice job in breaking 1:20...I probably won't be seeing sub 1:20 until early 2006 given that if I train consistently You coming out for the Summerfast 10k? Oh wait... I guess you have to be there to volunteer since you're a member of VFAC and the race's organized by your club... I'm 90%-100% sure I'll be there to run it so I'll talk to you there

Hi all, For those who are interested I had a bone scan Monday - came back normal. Now what?? Still hurts, so I am trying to run again. Anything over 30 minutes hurts......... Very frustrating!! I wanted to bump this thread back up into the top!! Did anyone follow the Badwater race? Two locals........both did extremely well. I would love to run an ultra...........one day. I hope everyone is well, and enjoying "summer". "the sun'll come out ...........tomorrow..."------------------ Moi!

hey maureen, glad the scan was negative; you've probably considered this already but would a different type of shoe help? What about a different type of terrain -- are you able to do you do any of your running off pavement/concrete? have been watching badwater -- our local newspaper (i live in the tricities area) featured Matt Sessions in a couple of articles over the past few months (talking about his training methods) also have been following mudrunner (who completed Western States -- he's posted his report in Ultra section). I'm doing the Fort Langley 1/2 this Sunday . . . if the sun is going to come out . . . about 10 a.m. this Sunday would be good jenn

Jenn, I wonder if we had this conversation already............... I live in Port Moody. Where are you? And more importantly, how did you do today? Was kind of toasty........... I was almost gonna crew for Matt...... He did amazing!! The very fact he finished puts him in a very elite crowd. He even earned the buckle!! Hi guys... I, too, read about Matt Sessions in the Tri-Cities a few months back...glad to hear that he did well at Badwater...I sorta met him in October of last year after a 1/2 marathon (he was the overall winner) in PoCo. Currently in the depths of intense marathon training (for RVM on Oct. 9th)...dropping back the mileage this week to recover and mini-taper for a 10k tuneup on the 23rd (Summerfast 10k)...Ernest (Andele), if you're reading this, I hope to see you there...you volunteering or racing or both?

Haven't been online much lately... Tim -- I won't be at Summerfast. I have family commitments elsewhere. Just taking it easy at the moment, but will probably resurface Aug. 7 for a race somewhere... Jen -- I very nearly ran that Fort Langley Half, and as it turned out I would have had a good battle with Durrant. My hip was acting up that day, so I took a pass... and the day-of-race premium was $10, which was a bit steep. I run with the Walnut Grove Peninsula Runners occassionally and have run the Half course as a training run. Hilly mofo!

Thoroughly enjoyed the Fort Langley Half last Sunday & would recommend it -- enthusiastic volunteers, lots of food & draw prizes. Medal was cool too - ceramic, painted with the Fort Langley symbol. The weather was perfect especially with the 7 am start -- there was lots of shade still even for the back of the pack (me). It was a challenging course with a good hill the top of which was the half-way point and undulating in other spots; most of it on quiet country roads with little traffic. Was pleased with my result (2:17) as my training has been a little wonky the past month or so (more time in the gym than on the road). Unfortunately on Monday I pulled a muscle in my calf so am sidelined for the moment. Tim, good luck with Summerfast! Looks like we're in for a week of warm weather . . . finally. Jenn

Jen, sounds like a nice challenging run! Never heard of this race before...and I thought Langley was mostly flat... Well I did run the 10k last saturday, with a time of 39:17 (39:22 gun), a pr but not quite what I expected. Splits were very negative-20:10 and 19:07...still not a bad time considering that I ran it on tired legs, in the midst of marathon training. The weather was great...cloudy and abit on the chilly side with some headwinds on the seawall. 8 more weeks till taper...I'm really looking forward to it... Anyways have a great week guys...the hot weather's finally coming our way so enjoy it while it lasts!

Maureen, didn't see you're last post on Sat night so I thought I'd post here rather than recessitating that old thread.I understand your confusion about my long run comment. Because I typically run so little distance my weekly long run is a 11 k around burnaby lake. When I was working up to my ultimate training long run of 22 k (1/2 with baby stroller) I just do two laps of the lake. When I am running a 15/16 k run I would do three things. 1. Run with a friend and leave cars at either end of the lake. then run 1.5 times around lake 2. Run the Brunet River as an out an back to add on. 3. Park by stables. Run one lap counterclockwise and then do an out an back to the wildlife center to make it up to 15. Do you run the PoCo trail much. I took my bike out there a few weeks ago and thought that it would be a great training run in a work up to marathon distance (one of my longer term goals).

I didn't see this til now. I don't run PoCo trail often, though I would like to. I get a bit confused about where to start and what the distances are. I do run with a friend sometimes and we leave her house, off Pipeline, and go up the river a bit, to the red bridge and back. I did Burnaby Lake on Sunday and I always park at the soccer fields, run to the dam, and head up river to North road and back and around the other side of the lake. Nice run took 1 hr and 22 min. I usually do it in 1 hr 20 or so, but really took it easy on Sunday. I hope your DW is feeling better!------------------ Moi!

I believe the PoCo trail loop we road was 30 k. We started at Colony Farm went left at the bridge and followed the trail along the Fraser and the Pitt R. to DeBouiville Slough. Then we ran westerly on the Trans Canada Trail to the Coquitlam R. and returned to Colony Farm along the Coquitlam. It would be a great run and had I managed to keep healthy after Scotia I would have made it my next distance goal. DW is doing fine thanks and *cross my fingers* DD appears to have dodged the cold too. I usually start by the dam as I ususally am pushing my DD in her stroller and we like to start with the stairs. I try not to push the stroller on runs longer than 10 k. Funny I'm out there so often walking my dog or running that we've probably passed each other sometime. I will bet we have.....weird, isn't it? Well, I usually say "Hi" to everyone I pass, so we have probably exchanged words, actually! I am definitely gonna do that PoCo trail run. Is any of it on roads? or all trail? ------------------ Moi!

There are two or three locations where you have to run on roads from what I recall and other places where the trail is paved (asphault). 1. a very small chunk after DeBouville Slough to link onto the Trans Canada Trail. 2. the frontage road along Mary Hill Bypass; 3. after the Fraser R. Dyke portion you have to run along the Mary Hill Bypass (seperated by concrete barriers from traffic, and along some side roads by the Dublin Docks pub until you hit the trail under the Pitt R. Bridge (watch your footing here as the trail is buckled by tree roots). Other than that its mostly dirt trail. If you want to make it longer and don't mind donig some out and back you could link up to Minnekada Park by continuing along the Pitt R. dyke trail above DeBouville Slough.

I do a fair bit of my running on the Poco Trail. You can start at Lion's Park (just across the bridge on Lougheed then go right on Shaughnessy & right at the next turn). A roughly 15k run would be heading north on the trail to the blue pedestrian bridge, go right to Shaughnessy, cross & head east along Patricia all the way to Coast Meridian, cross Coast Meridian now you're back on a trail, head east to a bit of a junction, keep right & you'll end up running behind Hyde Creek Rec Centre (good place for pit stop). Keep going along the creek until you come out at a wooden footbridge, go left (north) across the bridge (now you're running parallel to Cedar Dr.), follow the path to Victoria (next intersection), cross Cedar on your right & now you're on the dyke, run along the dyke (first beside the Debouville Slough & then you swing south & are parallel to the Pitt River) to the third exit (the one after the marina), head right down off the dyke & you're on Prairie, head west along Prairie all the way back to the Coquitlam River (cross Shaughnessy), go left on the trail & Lions Park is almost there.A shorter run would be starting at the park, heading left (south) on the trail to the Red Bridge & back (approx. 7k?) - that's all on asphalt trail. There's also the 2.5k loop around Town Centre Park on asphalt trail. There are more routes of varying distances incorporating Colony Farm. Didn't know about any of them until I took up running! It makes for lots of variety in training. Jenn ps there is a map of the trail on Port Coquitlam's website www.city.port-coquitlam.bc.ca ppss Tim, congrats on your results this weekend!!!
