So, I ran the Leif Erickson trail this morning for the first time (well 6 miles of it anyway). Wow. What a great run - it is so beautiful up there. I can't believe I've lived in Portland for 16 years and I've never been up there. Totally worth driving across town to get to it.P.s. I thought about doing RunHitWonder just because last year's shirts were so pretty (sky blue). I would have been totally bummed by this year's orange. yuck. All I can say is, they'd better be green or yellow next year!

Hi all,I am somewhat new to running... have ran a few 5K's including the recent Nike Run Hit Wonder. I am very excited about running and ready to take it to the next step.. the 10K. Do you know of any good 5-7 mile running routes in the PDX area? I live in SW but would be willing to explore all sides of Portland on the weekend runs. Thanks!

I've lived in PDX just as long, and I haven't run Leif Erickson either. I did stop by one of the trail heads last week, though, and I am definitely go to run part of it soon. pdxfitness - welcome to CR and congratulations on getting the running bug! Some of the places I like to run start from downtown and go along the waterfront, Springwater corridor, or up Terwilliger.

You knuckleheads; get out & run somewhere else for a change! Kidding!...I could use some of the same motivation myself. pdxfitness, Tryon Creek park has great trails for running.

pdxfitness - another vote for Tryon. Also there have been a couple of races in Cook park in Tigard this year. There might be some good running there...If you don't mind a little drive, Sauvie Island is great, too (and by great, I mean flat). I did 15 there this weekend.

How do you all find out about local runs (5k/10k/Halfs)? I just recently started running and plan to run the Napa Valley or Newport Marathons next year. I'd like to run some events in the mean time, preferably 10k or halfs. Also, are there any running groups that like long miles and don't mind out of shape-ish newbies? I don't get out and meet people much anymore, and don't know any other runners. My girlfriend gets tired after about a mile, and don't you dare try running up an incline with her. FYI, I run 6 mi in around 50 minutes, and just ran 13.36 miles (from my house to the Spencer Butter parking lot) last weekend. The hills sucked. I had no desire to do it again, until today. perdurabo at gmail dotcom

I usually check out:http://www.goodrace.com/ and http://www.racecenter.com/ And some local events seem to only be posted at the running stores.

Eugene Running Company has group runs that accommodate all sorts of ability levels (including long runs), and I may be wrong but I think Step Beyond also has group runs. The Nike store has group runs, too...and UO has some good classes that Joe Henderson teaches. He says the Winter term 10K training/racing class has the least amount of people in it (meaning it's more likely that spots are open for community members). I've seen signs of a hash house harriers group in town, too.

Somehow I missed this thread going. I don't ever look into the "Neighborhood" section. I'm another Eugene runner.Anyone doing the Scandia 10K this Saturday? ------------------ About Me

@Econo,Yeah I've been in contact with Joe about taking his marathon class in the beginning of 2006. I guess I have plenty of time to get in shape! I was pondering the Napa Valley Marathon, because it's not as far off as the Newport one, but the drive's a killer.

Yup, the Hash House Harriers are strong in Eugene. Last I knew, they were running on Monday evenings in the summers and Sunday afternoons in the winter. Mrs. dg and I used to run with them occasionally, pre-kids. A very fun and diverse group if you don't mind some rowdy tomfoolery to go with your running. Phone number is at the end of the article here: http://runtrails.blogspot.com/2005/01/are-you-hasher-material.html or grab Todd Bosworth at the end of just about any local race from 5k to 50k. He's the tall blond mid-40's guy with a smile on his face trying to find a post-race beer. Hey Econo, have we been passing each other on long Sunday runs along the river? I got a smile and a nice "howdy" from a 40ish lady running with a couple of men a few Sundays ago, as we passed each other going opposite directions around the park a couple of times. For some reason, I thought it might be you. I'm solo training for my first marathon, Chicago on 10/9. I've got 19 and 20 milers scheduled the next two weekends. Gulp! Good luck to alaskagrown on her Crater Lake Marathon. Chris ------------------ There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. - Miracle Max Go Ducks!

@duckgeek,We've all probably been passing each other again and again. I run the river loop a lot, too. In fact, I live on it. Well, not ON it, but within 50 feet of it. Another advantage to living on the river is that I get to hear the best damn bum arguments/drunken singing ever, come night fall...

Ah the sweet music of summer...drunken revelry on the river trail. Duckgeek that might have been me, but I run alone usually. I did a nice 17-miler there last weekend.... Oh yeah, here's how you can spot me; I'm the only one out there in a running skirt (black), trying to get the trend started!megapronator, I'm doing the Scandia 10K with my 12-y-o son. My goal is to be average in my AG this yr, 20th percentile next yr, then total world domination after that.

Hey Oregon runners...My BF and I will be there on vaction in Sept and are planning on running the Bank to Bay 10K as well as the Octoberfest 10K. I'm also considering moving there (Portland - hence the 10 day vacation to scope it out). I'm from Ireland originally so don't think the weather will be any problem. Any info you guys could pass on would be wonderful. My working background is in legal secretarial as well as banking (capital markets). Thanks!!! Stay safe out there.

Hi!!I've lived in Eugene my whole life (so far) and recently ran my first 5k (Community Fun Run). I came in 9th in my age division and can't wait to approve upon my time of 28:45. I've only been running for a couple months, so I am really looking forward to seeing how much progress I can make in the near future. Anyway ... I love living in Eugene (track town USA)! GO DUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where are you moving from? Why are you moving? Might help us to know what you're looking for in a city/community, etc... Are you set on Portland, or would you consider smaller cities in the area? I live in Vancouver, WA which is just across the Columbia river from Portland. While you're here in Sept. you might want to check it out. It's sort of a bedroom community of Portland. I love the area! So much to do and things are easily accessible. A very active community. People are very friendly.

@OnTheRoadAgainForget reason and logic, if you can deal with the Oregon rain, Portland is a kick ass place to live. But since you're visiting soon, you'll see for yourself.

Econo - I'll see you at the Scandia race. Of course I'll have no idea it is you, but the 2 mile out-and-back stretch assures that most people will see each other! I not sure what I'll be wearing, but I'll be the guy with the really bad running form running somewhere near the front.------------------ About Me

OnTheRoadAgain -With your background in banking and as a legal secretary, you'll probably be able to find employment in downtown Portland. There are a lot of great places to run downtown, especially along the riverfront. Also, we probably have one of the best year-round climates in which to run. Except for a few days in the summer when the temperature is near 100°F, and a rare episode of freezing rain/snow, you can run quite comfortably all year long. You just have to learn to run in the dark in the winter! Good luck to you.

Megapronator, the Scandia run was so hot! Whew! And I hate that last mile where it seems like they keep moving the finish line further & further away. Alaskagrown, haven't heard from you in a while. We want that Crater Lake marathon report.

Econo - How did you do in the race?Honestly I didn't notice it being warm. I usually run in the late afternoons, and it has been so hot the last few weeks it seemed quite comfortable racing at 8 am. I was pooring with sweat by the end, however. This was the first time running this race, so I made sure I warmed up over the last mile of the course. It was a good thing, because that last stretch is misleadingly long. As it turns out I was locked into a pretty close competitive battle for 3rd, and it was helpful to know not to start a kick when you see the finish. At that point it is still a 1/2 mile away! I ended up having a great race. I didn't taper at all, and still finished finished just ahead of a couple guys who would normally beat me, and I ran a real good time for me as well. ------------------ About Me

Megapronator, you did great!!! I watched the awards afterward -- you must have received an AG win, right? I almost got my goal (to be average!! well, a newcomer has to start somewhere)...12th out of 22 in the F40-44 AG. My son won one of those Dari Mart certificates, so I might con him into buying me a monster cookie.
