hail, fellow Orygunners; I'm also a native GPer transplanted to Portland. GO CAVEMEN!! Did a long run a few weeks ago while visiting; motel on 6th St. to Merlin and back.

But my reason for this post is to get some feedback on Timberline 26.2, and how crazy I might be to run it as a long run before the Portland Marathon (THREE weeks out). I've been training for my 3rd consecutive Portland, and an email piqued my curiosity on Timberline. anyone have any experience? It's on the Pacific Crest Trail. Net downhill. I'm not a trail runner. Any wisdom in trying this? Not sure what has me so intrigued with this idea. I've actually been really struggling with motivation this year with just training for Portland.

So tell me if I'm nuts. I suspect this might be a dangerous race to play around with, but I'd like to hear some opinions.

Hi tpr,

I've signed up for Timberline, but haven't run it myself yet ... can't help you there. In general, I've always found trail marathons a lot more fun than road. You might enjoy it if you treat it as a long run. Take your time and enjoy the scenery. I'd be eager to hear from someone who has run it. Good luck if you do go, and good luck in Portland.

AFAIK the Timberline marathon is basically the second half of the PCT50 that was run a couple of weeks ago. I don't know what they do to sort out all the runners at the beginning, but it's an extremely runnable trail. There are a few sections with a few rocks and roots but many long sections that are great footing. At no point is it narrow or turney in the manner of truly @#$% technical trail runs. The first part of the trail down from Timberline is on glacial sand, so wearing gaiters might not be a bad idea.

Be warned though that there are some significant uphills, even going from Timberline to Timothy Lake. Nothing significant by the standards of a trail ultra, but to someone used only to road marathons they'll get your attention. I think there is a net drop of not quite 3000 ft, most of it early in the race.

There are also two highway crossings: the hwy35 crossing is just a few miles from Timberline but usually has light traffic, the hwy 26 crossing is often heavy traffic. PCT had a volunteer in a safety vest there, but it's possible you might have to wait a minute or two.

The only other warning: near the end you go around Timothy Lake and come out to a road. You think you'll get to that road about a mile before you really do: that "extra" mile seems to drag.

The PCT R.D. said that they will be running a continuous shuttle from Timothy Lake back to Timberline.

Hey Econo, I might try for that 5k.

Sarah A, I just looked through the results and saw your nice time at Scandia. Congrats! Thinking back, I may have walked past you 2 or three times in the finish area. You're a very-petite blonde, right?

I'm a short, stocky, bow-legged, young-looking 42 y.o. that walks kind of funny. I was wearing a blue nike shirt with a white horiz. stripe on the chest and a white nike hat. Not probably someone you'd notice or remember unless you are an orthopedic surgeon! I finished in 41:45.

Craig, you missed a great day out there. Perfect conditions.

Thanks, duckgeek! It was my first time running Scandia. Nice course. At the start they said "runners set, click-- as the starter's gun malfunctioned. The timer, however, started. I don't think they realized this for about 6 sec. before just yelling "go" to send us off because my watch time and the finish time were 6 sec. off. Other than that, it seemed well organized. I didn't think about until later, but I should have posted here before the race to see how many other Oregon Coolrunners were going to be there. It would have been nice to finally meet some of you! (Yes, I was the petite blond at the finish line area, duckgeek, I don't recall seeing you though, sorry. I'll know who to look for next time!)

Also, I might as well put in a pitch for a Roseburg area race coming up in October: The Cobb Street Harvest Run will be at 8:30am on Oct. 13th. There will also be a 2 mile walk and 700m Kid's Trot. More info at eclecticedgeracing.com, the same folks who put on the Eugene Marathon. Bring the family and enjoy the Wildlife Safari afterwards or drive the winery route or pick out a pumpkin at one of the local farms! We don't have too many races in Roseburg during the year and this is the first with a hired race director.

Less than four days until the start of Hood To Coast! Who's in? Team Name? Leg number? I'm with the Slug Hunters, most of whom are from Boca Raton, FL. Start time: 7:45 pm. I've got leg #2 this year. Lovely downhill for the first leg, fairly flat second leg, and a final climb on the third leg. The good news with an early leg is I get to gloat when I'm done and the others have hours to go!

Good luck Sarah! I'm not doing Hood to Coast after all. The team didn't need me, which is good because my running has taken a turn for the worse. Even with minimal warmup, that would be 20 miles of running in 14 hours, something I likely couldn't complete at this point in time, even going very slow.

I know at least Econo and myself did the Monster Dash 5K yesterday in Eugene. Anyone else? It was expensive, and they had lots of organization problems, but the race itself was fine (accurate course, mile markers, and time). Not sure I would do it again when there are so many other races around this time of year.

I stopped training and racing about 6 months ago, except for a short jog now and then to keep my sanity. I now do 15-20 miles on a good week, all at an easy pace. So then I jump into a race on a whim, and I seem to have gotten faster! What is up with that?

mega, you forgot to mention that you won! Fastest Trick-or-Treater! Congrats on the unexpected speed.

The race was fun but annoying in its lack of information. I wish I had signed up for the "trick-or-treater" race... The witch costume and broom didn't slow me down too much.

Technically I won, but a guy did run 15:00 in the non-competitive, non-timed, fun-run 5K after the main race. Of course he didn't have to carry a trick or treat bag or two popcorn balls, so I fugure that was good for at least 2:06!

There was a lot of confusion between the two runs. I was told when I signed up that it cost an extra $5 for the main race, and the second race wasn't even going to be timed. I had no interest in trick-or-treating during the race, but then they announced you had to (many runners didn't actually do it). It actually turned out to be fun, and it actually helped me win and probably run faster. I'll spare you the story behind that... A number of runners either missed the start, started with the wrong race, or simply skipped it completely due to the cost and lack of information, including some very fast runners. I saw some fast guys warming up that ended up not racing at all, plus the fast guy who ended up in the wrong race.

Your costume was very cool BTW.

Tempting, tempting regarding the Hagg Lake mud run -- but the 25K in my case. I ran this 2 years ago and loved it but felt guilty regarding the mass destruction of the trails. The runners tended to try to go around the mud on the sloppy parts and ended up really tearing up the surrounding grass.

But it's so fun.....
