Alright, a topic that I'm excited about!I live on the westside of Portland in the Cedar Mill area. I run pretty much every other day, somewhere between 3 and 5 miles. I pretty much keep to this schedule since I'm over 40 and I'm trying to save my knees! I usually try to run an organized race every month or so. The best list of the races in Oregon that I have found is on the Willamette Valley Road Runners web site. http://www.wvroadrunners.org/index.html Did anyone run in the Shamrock Run this past weekend? It was an absolutely beautiful day! I had a great time in the Beer Garden I think my next race is going to be the Bridge To Bridge 10K on April 3rd. It goes across the Fremont Bridge which should be a great view of the city. I hope this topic takes off. Thanks alaskagrown for starting it! Portland courses- 1. gotta love LEIF ERICKSON TRAIL, esp. for Sunday long runs! 2. Springwater corridor downtown- starting at Oaks Park you can loop downtown via a nice bike path, across the Steel Bridge, back south on the west side of the river and back across the Sellwood for a nice 10-miler. 3. Lunch runs- downtown- 2 laps across the Hawthorne-Steel bridges = 5.3 miles. 4. More lunch runs- start at the fountain in Tom McCall park, cross Hawthorne bridge and go south past OMSI to pick up the Springwater trail and go as far out as you want- all the way to Oaks Park and back would be a good 8-miler. The path has markers every half-mile. 5. more long runs- pick up the Springwater Corridor again a little further east at 45th/Johnson Creek (Tideman Nature Park?) and head east for as long/far as you want; fairly flat. Once you get past I-205 you don't have to cross many roads.

To all of you who have sent me welcome posts, I appreciate it. Might take me a little while to get back to y'all, because I had a bit of an accident and now I have a concussion. But I really do thank you for all the feedback...I'm so excited! Jenna

Hi tpr55, I run #3 a couple times a week as a recovery run. I heard a rumor that there was a seal in the river on Tuesday! I also head over to the track at the YMCA on Barbur (about a mile from the Tom McCall fountain) for tempo runs, or continue up Terwiliger for a good hill workout. AG - My next race is the Race for the Roses on 4/17. I'm doing the 5K - I won my age group last year, and have to defend my title

SarahLouisa - I actually did the 5K because it's my preferred distance. A long time ago I ran track in college at Willamette U. in Salem, where I was a sprinter (100m, 200m and 4x100m relay). Anything over 400m is too far to me! I'll occasionally do a 10K if there is a good reason: Bridge To Bridge which goes over the Fremont Bridge, Nike Run Hit Wonder because of all the bands that played, etc. But mostly I just stick to 5K's.

Are these paved or dirt trails? Just curious if they are good for bicycling? We just purchased a trail-a-bike for my husband's bike so we can include our 3yr old daughter in our workouts. We didn't want to get a bike trailer that she sits passively in. Plus, she was getting bored in the jogger (read: fidgety, whiny, talkative). We love the trail-a-bike as does my daughter! She's an energizer and we would probably get tired before she does. She does quite a bit of the peddaling so she's not just sitting there coasting.

Leif Erickson is more an 8-10-ft service road than a trail, but it's dirt and not paved. Springwater is largely an asphalt bike path.

I think it was 20:40 last year (the fast runners all ran the half). I'd like to be about a minute faster this year. The 5K is my favorite distance, but I'm going to challenge myself with some longer races this year, as soon as I break 20:00 that is

I just accepted a grad. assistantship in Exercise Physiology at Oregon State Univ.! I'm very excited! Are there any runners here from Corvallis, or does anyone have any insight on the area and where to run? Where do I look to learn about races in the Northwest (website, magazine)? jag

another source for runs near Corvallis is www.goodrace.com. [There's a run in corvallis on April 16th I've decided to do (the 10K), a benefit for Court Appointed Special Advocates of Benton county (they provide mentors for kids in the court system going through foster care difficulties).]Jaguar, the rain this week is an anomaly. Seriously, we had a gorgeous winter...sunny & nice. The rainfall for the past 10 years has not approached what it was in previous decades. You'll love Corvallis -- very pleasant place to live. I don't know where to start to list all the big races in Oregon, though. There are lots!

run report: i ran on the treadmill for the first time in my life last night. it was really strange. when i stepped off the thing, i thought i was going to fall over. my legs didn't really stop going, and i got really dizzy. but other than that, it was pretty boring. the treadmills at the UO face tinted windows, so all you do is watch yourself run. not my favorite activity, but i think trying to read would just make me feel silly. or sick. back to running in the rain for me. i'll stick to lifting weights at the gym.

Hey AG, I just got done with my run outside and I got hailed on! I have a treadmill at home and I was going to use it, but my workout for today was a 4 mile run plus 5 100m sprints, so I had to run outside and finish at a track.I got to agree with you about running on a treadmill, it's pretty freakin' boring. Thank goodness I have my old college stereo in my treadmill room so I can run as LOUD as I want. That's the only way I can tolerate it. I've been fighting off a nasty respiratory virus for over a week now, so my last three runs have been tough. I'm entered to run a 10K race in little over a week, so I hope I'm over it by then.

you're getting hail in p-town too? wow. what is happening in the ol' valley? i've seen that a lot of folks in the newbie/basic training forums say that running outside is a lot harder than running on a treadmill. i guess that tells me that the hardest part of running for me is staying distracted, not focused! if i start running on the bike path here, go slow, and zone out on whatever, i think i could literally run all day. when i'm on the TM and there are all these numbers staring up at me, reminding me that i've only been running for fifteen seconds since the last time i looked down, it makes running more than an hour seem impossible. fyi, i ran outside today.

Ah yes...it appears our normal March weather has finally returned. I had almost forgotten what running in cold rain felt like! I must be fairly assimulated now (after 4+ years) to the PacNW...I actually missed it! And I'm glad I'm not the only one who'd rather run in the rain than on the treadmill. I just feel so darn uncoordinated on those things! Happy Running!

btw...I'm kicking around the idea of trying the Portland Marathon this year. It would be my first at that distance. Anyone have any experiences they'd care to share?

Hey all, I found the following book to be a good source: Trail Running Oregon: Northwest and Central Oregon's Classic Trail Runs, by Lizann Dunegan. It's not comprehensive (that is, it has fewer hikes in it than a normal hiking book), but if you like to hop in the car and drive out to someplace scenic, you might as well bring your running shoes, right? Good descriptions & maps of what look like very scenic and sometimes challenging runs. AG, at the UO Rec center the upstairs machines (stairmasters etc.) by the indoor track are better because you have a view of the intramural fields below. Plus, you don't have to be encased in a gigantic glass fishbowl. But like all of you, I think indoor training is like doing time in the state pen.
