Question for anyone here... I am new to this site, so haven't had much time to peruse. What is the difference between member and cool runner?

Econo: You were there when it all started... j8mon, you become a CoolRunner when you have 30 posts? 25? Something like that. It's not too many. Wyoming is nice too. We're both transplants from snowier places. I am coming back to Oregon, so I feel justified in posting in this thread!

I always wondered where you ran off to alaskagrown. I'm glad you're coming back!I was going to run the Eugene HM until I got peer-pressured into running the Avenue of the Giants. But I know of several folks from Portland who are planning on running Eugene. It's not very often you get a chance to run in an inaugural marathon. ------------------ Labduck

I'm planning on running the full marathon. I have CIM coming up in 3 weeks- just did my last long run (23 miles am followed by 7 miles pm) yesterday. Then I'll take a few weeks off, play around with a Jingle Bell Run or New Year midnight run (there's gotta be some coming up!) and then do a 12-16 week build up for the Eugene marathon. I'm committed to running the Coos Bay Wagon Road Relay (Roseburg to Coos Bay- awesome relay!) the weekend before. Also, I heard they're doing a kids marathon where kids can log their mileage leading up to race day and do the final 1/2 mile or mile (can't remember the actual distance) and get their finisher's medal. I'm going to be working with my son's school on this event. Sarah

Hey Tammy! I just remembered you're down in the Medford area. I have to fly out of the Medford airport next Friday the 17th and will be returning late that evening. I'm staying overnight with a friend (non runner) in Medford but was going to run early Sat. morning before driving back up to Roseburg. Are there any running clubs or groups of runners that meet early Sat. morning? I was going to run along Bear Creek (I think that's the name). Sarah

Hi Sarah! If I were down in Medford I'd meet up with you for a run, but I'm actually up closer to Grants Pass, so I'm not really in the know as far as running groups or clubs that meet for scheduled runs. The Bear Creek trail is a fairly long trail that is good to run on, so if your hotel is close to that, that is probably going to be your best bet for a run w/o having to deal with cars.

Hey everybody,Just found this site...Coolrunning looks great. I just ran the Tri-Cities marathon on October 29th and will be running the Mosier Twin Tunnel 12k in Hood River in December. I live in Portland OR. I've lost 110 pounds in large part to running! Glendoveer is a great 2 mile trail loop in NE Portland, but it gets boring after three loops. I'm looking for a great running jacket for Portland weather. Any help would be great Brian

Welcome Brian and congrats on such a significant weight loss! I'm down in the other end of the state, but there are a few Portlanders around.

Welcome Brian!I live in Portland, and I tend to do my long runs downtown on the loop between the Steel and Sellwood bridges. It's 10.5 miles long, mostly flat, and fairly scenic. As for a rain jacket, I have several, but I seldom wear one. My rain apparel is usually shorts, two technical shirts (one is usually long sleeved), a hat, and gloves. I find I get too hot when I wear a jacket, especially for anything over three miles. ------------------ Labduck

I got the cast thing off my leg, and now I'm thinking about the Eugene marathon myself. That isn't much time to ramp back up, but I've improved pretty fast so far. 5 weeks ago I couldn't crack 10 minute pace for a short run, but today I did a tempo run at 6:28 pace.Everything I've heard is that the Eugene Marathon is likely to be a pretty big race. They announced a cap of 5,000 runners for each race distance. That seems like a huge number for a first time race, but it has developed a lot of interest. I'll ask Joe next time I see him how the registration is going. I wouldn't be surprised to see some pretty fast guys running it as well - even with no prize money. ------------------ About Me

Their marketing is excellent -- I see it everywhere (at the Seattle Marathon, in Running Times, Marathon & Beyond, etc.).I switched plans and will run Eugene instead of The Avenue. Avenue of the Giants will always be there, but there is only one inaugural Eugene Marathon.

I'm running the CIM this weekend but I've had my eye on the Eugene Marathon for several months now. Can't pass up a chance to run in my own backyard practically! No travel expenses to boot! Ok, lets get through this weekend first .....Sarah

I live in Vancouver, though I seem to run over in Portland pretty often, mostly on Wildwood Trail.Jackets: I picked up an ultralight shell at REI that's really simple and single-layer ripstop and really like it. It's so light that I can take it on and off as needed and stuff it in a pocket or wrap it around my waist. I find that a little bit of water repellency and windproofing is all I need. Eugene is on my "maybe" list. I have a goal race 2 weeks before, a semi-goal-race the week before, and a very tough race the week after. I'll probably decide about April 19 (unless they limit the field.) Great to have you here, see you running! ------------------ -Hippo- We went to face our demons, but all we found were angels

Hey all-- New C25K runner and just wondering if I'm being a total wuss by not running outside and sticking to my treadmill! Any good runs in East County that steer clear of bums and juveniles? I've already done Glendoveer, so I need more ideas! Glad to have found this thread!

Welcome RunHungry81!I'm a westsider, so I don't know much about running on the east side. However, during Hood to Coast, we ran on the Springwater Corridor trail from east of Gresham all the way to the Woodstock area. I think the leg I ran went from the Gresham Main St. Park (?) to 122nd St., and was about 6 miles. It seemed like a nice place to run. I don't think you're a wuss for wanting to run inside on the TM, especially since you just started running. Several years ago when I did C25K, I ran indoors all winter. I now use a treadmill about once a week as a way of controlling my pace, and my legs appreciate the softer surface. ------------------ Labduck

I'll chime in on what Labduck said. The other place in that area that connects to Springwater corridor is Powell Butte - some singletrack there. You also might try down by Blue Lake Park. The bike path along Marine drive connects to some stuff in the park. The Gorge is also a wonderful resource. Trail #400 runs all along near I-84 and much of it is on the old road for pedestrians only. Any of the trails in the western end are awesome, though on many you'll find some small hills (like 3000ft ) We live in a great place to run.

Very cool, thanks! The only prob with Springwater Trail is that my boyfriend was a cop with Gresham and has told me horror stories about that path from Main City Park to 122nd. I might just stick to the TM until I'm fast enough to outrun the crazies in Gresham. Thanks for the suggestion of the Gorge, I'll have to drag the boy out there sometime

Howdy everyone- just wanted to introduce myself to the thread. I'm a new runner (almost finished with the Couch to 5K- yippee! I can run!) in SE Portland. (Runhungry81- Isn't the C25K just great?) My first 5K is the Christmas Classic near Olympia WA which was the closest 5K I could find in the last week of my C25K (www.ontherunevents.com/xmasmarathon). Anyone else running this one?
