hey...
just want to know that I'm not alone! And also, would like to know where you run locally?

Another Raleigh runner here. I do most of my long runs along the greenways. How about yourself?

Live in Apex and run my neighborhood streets every day but Sunday. On that long run I run at Umstead, Harris Lake, Shelley Lake, Apex Park, or Bond Park.

Edited to mention: I see you are a teacher...are you new to the area? I have two kids in Wake County Schools...good luck!

If you are interested in group runs, here's the local running club http://www.ncroadrunners.org/

I run Shelley Lake every saturday morning and my neighborhood (near Spring Forest Drive) during the week. Sometimes I run on an indoor track at a gym I live near. I have gone to Umstead Park but mostly to hike.

Yes, I'm a Wake County teacher. I teach kids with disabilities in a middle school. Been there for 4 years. Getting ready to start year 5. Been living in Raleigh for a little over one year....I lived in Granville County when I first started working here.

Well, then I may have passed you (or been passed by you) on Saturday mornings.

Not likely! I'm very slow! But that's cool that you run there too! I was just there this past Saturday and ran for a little over an hour.

Do you run with the HUGE Gallow groups that meet at Shelley lake?

My long run partner and I usually meet there around 5:15 am or so for our long runs. Because the sun is not yet up, we run a loop up to Falls of the Neuse and back to Shelley lake. We then run the greeenway all the way out to Old Wake Forest Rd and back - that is a good 12 mile loop.

I understand that they are planning on connecting more of the greenway in the near future.

Hello Raleigh area runners! I'm in the Morrisville area, and have been mostly sticking to the roads around my neighborhood. I've never actually been out to Shelley Lake, mostly because it seems like a bit of a trek- but then I guess I'm not exactly sure where it is. Any other greenways around that may be good for running? The ones I've found in the Cary area seem so short?

Because I'm lazy, I run later than you do (I love to sleep!)...so I get to the lake around 8 am or so on Saturdays. Because I'm so slow, I prefer to run by myself...that way I don't feel like I'm slowing others down. I like your idea of looping up to Falls of the Neuse. I live close to there and could run to it and then up to Millbrook. Long run but I'm training for a half marathon so it would be ideal. I have also heard that they (whoever they are!) are planning to try to connect all the greenways...that would be great! I think that Wake County has such great parks and greenways. Its a real pleasure to run here.

and to hstaub47....Is Lake Johnson near you? I've never been there but I hear its very nice. Shelly lake is off of Millbrook Road in North Raleigh, you can also access it off of North Hills Rd.. I'm not sure of the best way for you to get there but it is a long trek for you. Still...its worth the trip and is a very nice place to run. It has about a 2 mile loop around the lake but there are several paved trails off the main loop that are anywhere between 1 and 1.5 miles and there's lots of nice sidewalks surrounding the greenway...so I can get 5-6 miles easily and not run the same place. I'm sure one can even run more but I haven't done that yet.

crossrunner - thanks for the tip - Lake Johnson is also a bit of a trek, but sometimes worth it for a longer weekend run. I'm also considering just heading out to RTP on the weekend, there are actually a lot of nice paved running paths, but of course not as nice as running around a lake. I see a few people out there during the week, but I'm not sure about the weekends but I'm hoping it's pretty safe. I may just have to try Shelley Lake just to see what it's like at some point.

Have you tried the bridle trails in Umstead? Many people run there on the weekends. The packed trails are great if you have any knee problems. The trails are pretty hilly and that can be a good or bad thing. Be warned that many portions of the trails are remote and I would think that some women might not feel safe. Most women seem to run with other people, so I guess that is the best way to feel safe while running.

Hey, NC runners: I was in High Point yesterday on business. I had a chance to run on some type of "Greenway" that was just off of Highway 68 and Regency Drive in High Point. The trail was absolutely beautiful The only problem was that it was flooded out in various spots and I finally had to turn back. Does anyone have any information on this trail?

Thanks, folks!

hstaub - I'm in Cary (near Preston Corners) and end up in Morrisville on various routes I take. You may want to try Lake Crabtree (pretty decent trails), Bond Park (short trails but nice) and especially, North Cary Park. The greenway there connects to Umstead and allows you to run as little or as far as you could (reasonably) want.

Oh yeah....Lake Crabtree is great! Lots and lots of trails...(dirt trails mostly). Beautiful area and its not far from hstaub.

We've actually been on the trails at Lake Crabtree and they are beautiful - even some of the dirt trails are decent for running.

Cooldad - where is North Cary park? Is that the park that's off of Norwell? That would definitely be close to me as well. I didn't realize that the greenways there connected to Umstead.

That's exactly where it is, Cary Parkway and Norwell. There is a soccer field, basketball courts and a playground with trails leading off behind it. The trail connects to the greenway at the bottom of the hill, passes under Weston Parkway and drops off onto the lake Crabtree system across the lake from the county park. If you continue to follow the trail with the lake to your left, you will cross a large earthen dam and end up at a bridge across I-40 (whew). Across the bridge is a gravel road (recently resurfaced) that is good for running. At this point you are in Umstead.

From North Cary Park, across the bridge and to the airport overlook (where the trail takes a sharp right), is approx. a seven mile round trip by my measure. A very pleasant and mostly shaded run. See you there.

The one week I don't check this forum and people nearby are actually posting. I live right by Falls of the Neuse and Spring Forest and do most of my runs in the North Ridge neighborhood. Lots of good hills, my favorite being on Hunting Ridge.

Crossrunner, are you running at the Spa? The treadmills are decent but they have a 30 min time limit and they are so busy in the evenings I hate to hog one but it takes me 4 miles just to get warmed up!

I do my long runs at Umstead alone all the time and have never encountered any problems whatsoever. I think that since it attracts mostly serious runners, there is not so much riff-raff. Don't feel the same about Shelley Lake. I used to run out there a lot but there are really some questionable people there. I was chased by a Hispanic guy there a couple of years ago and have felt uncomfortable about some of the people hanging out close to the entrance. If I go there at all, I run on the trails that fork off--under Millbrook one goes out around Crabtree Valley Mall.

For trackwork, I go to East Wake Middle School.

Oh you are real close by! I run North Ridge a lot too. When you say Spa...do you mean the Spa Health Club? I belong there and I run like an idiot on the indoor track there when the weather is just too horrid to run outside. Sometimes I run upwards to 5 miles on that thing...I feel like a hampster on a training wheel .
I just ran on that trail that goes to Crabtree Valley mall just this morning! It was great!! Lots and lots of other runners were out there this morning. I feel ok about Shelley Lake because I go when lots and lots of the running groups are there and they are very encouraging and they make me feel safer...even though I don't run with them.
For track work I run at West Millbrook Middle School...where I work as a teacher.

My kids are going to be starting West Millbrook this year! We were at East Millbrook but got redistricted. I'm probably the one person who's happy to have their schools change! When do you usually go to the Spa? I usually go about 6 in the evening if it is too humid or there are thunderstorms (which seems to be every night!) I thought West Millbrook MS track was locked up after hours. I often run that way and stop at the Kroger's for water.

I've only had trouble at Shelley Lake in the early evening. I liked going there because the mileage is marked so I can keep track of what my pace is. What pace do you usually run?

swatkins...
As far as I know WMMS track is opened after school hours...I usually will run on it after I get off work if there is no track practice (I try to be considerate of the kids practicing). I once helped with a track meet there (I got to shoot the starter pistol ) and there was this guy running on the track during the meet! We asked him nicely to leave but he said that he paid taxes to run on the track so tough luck! Oh well...

I usually am at the SPA around 4pm on hot or very cold days. If I'm on a break, I'll go in the morning.

I'm a very slow runner. I have such short legs and a very tiny stride. If I put my mind to it, I can run a 9 minute mile (but I don't know if I can endure it for, say a 5K). My usual long run pace is about a 11:30 minute mile. I've been running for almost 10 years so I don't know if I'm meant to be a speedy runner. I'm satisfied with saying that I have great endurance...as I have ran 2 half marathons and a marathon at a turtle's pace.
I think your kids will like being at West Millbrook. They won't have me as a teacher as I teach the kids with autism. The teachers at WMMS are a great and caring bunch and the administration is great.

Are the autistic kids mainstreamed? My younger son (going into 6th) carried a diagnosis of PDD-NOS and went to a language delay pre-school at JY Joyner for 2 years before starting kindergarten. He's now in the AG Program, thanks to people like you. Other than awkward use of language and some idiosyncrasies you would never think he had a problem.

I'm no speed demon myself--I probably run a 10 min/mile for most of my training runs, if you would ever like a running partner. My sisters run about the pace you do so I'm used to it.

My students are not mainstreamed because they are severly autistic. There are some kids with autism at our school who are mainstreamed and I see them on a consultation basis from time to time.
I may take you up on the training partner thing. I'm still trying to build up my miles as I had a broken ankle last year that sidelined me for sometime. I'm just now gotten to the point that I can do 20mpw again and I'm currently training for a half marathon. My speed was greatly effected by not running for such a long time. I ran for as fast as I could for a mile today and it took me 10:05 and I thought I would die! I'm hoping to work on my speed to the point that a 10 min mile won't kill me and then I will feel comfortable with a training partner. I love to run with others as it makes the time pass so quickly and its so much more fun but I feel so guilty slowing others down. I was running at Shelly Lake on Saturday and got passed by a big group of Galloway runners. I felt like such a turtle.
Let me know who your child's teachers are when school's open. I have to go tomorrow for the start of the workdays.

Did anyone else run the greenways around Shelly Lake this weekend? I ran early Saturday morning. Once you got totally soaked, it was actually a lot of fun. You could really understand that the greenways were built in flood zones because the standing water as a foot deep in a few places.

I didn't go out there as I have gotten caught out there in heavy rain before. If you're going clockwise, at about the 3/4 mile mark it gets really flooded. One time I was out there the water was halfway up my legs. I ran in the neighborhood yesterday and there was a lot of places the water was ankle deep, esp. on Spring Forest.

Crossrunner, my kids are on the Dolphin team (6th grade) and the Tigers (8th). Just the first week, but already I like WMMS much better than East.

I ran at Apex Community Park on Sunday (yep, in the pouring ran for 2 hours). Water was lapping just a few inches below the pathway but didn't cross it, and I've never seen it do so. The ducks and swans were loving it, though.
