I have just about maxed out my mileage based on the time I can find. As it is now, I get up at 4:30 for my longer weekday runs and meet my long run partner at 5:30. This way I am back home on weekdays before anyone else in the house is up and I get back from my long runs soon after the family wakes up.

Good luck with the juggling. I just keep telling myself that I am doing this for my health - and a lot of ego - so I should not stress about the number of miles I can fit into my schedule so long as the family is happy.

Thanks Gottagetfaster. When I get through the house renovation, I might have more time. If I got up at 4:30 AM I would have to go to bed at 8:30 PM, and I can tell you the wife would not be happy!

Perchcreek, I saw in your profile you had a couple of races this spring. Did you race, and if so how did you do?

I'm planning on running Richmond as well, yet I haven't registered or reserved a hotel room yet. Should I get the hotel room soon?

I liked staying at the Omni last year, so I got my room early. You can cancel the reservation a day or so before the marathon if something happens and you cannot run, so I figure I might as well get the reservation early. I am pretty sure there are several other hotels around the start and/or finish, so I would be surprise if you could not get a room later if you wanted to wait.

Please excuse the editing - Question about running Umstead. We ran last night, and the horseflies about carried me off. Does anyone have any tips for making it an enjoyable run? Seems like I'd sweat the bug spray off in about a mile. Anything else repel them?
I can sort of tune them out, but I can't stop running. DH was utterly distracted and had a horrible run.

I've had problems before, but for some reason they have not been bad in the mornings as they were last year. I recommend spraying your running clothes with repellent, but not sure if this will help. The bug problems will get better as the summer progresses.

Gottagetfaster, I saw Dr. Kratzer and a X-ray found a bone spur on the top of the left foot, but he is not sure of the cause. Could be arthritis. I need to change to a better motion control shoe and get some physical therapy. I see him again in five weeks, and if I still have pain he will try a cortisone shot. If that does not work, an option is surgery to take out the spur.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I just had to pipe in and say that after my very buggy run this morning on the ATT (wake) my hat is off to you NC summer runners.. between swatting at the bugs, and trying to keep them out of my mouth, It was no wonder I was so damn out of breath even at a slower (humidity) pace.
I was miserable..!

Amy, I tried spraying my clothes and wore a hat covered in bug spray, it did me little good. I have no answers for you - only hope!

Yeah, I did my long run out at Umstead yesterday and after about 16 miles of being tortured by horseflies I must have stepped on a yellow jacket nest and got terrorized by those all the way back to the trailhead. I felt like I was in a really bad horror movie (cut to scene of woman running, panting, tripping on roots...)

Bob,

Glad you liked Dr. Kratzer but sorry to hear about your foot. Are you allowed to run for the next 5 weeks? Good luck with the PT and hopefully this will be a quickly healing injury. Look on the bright side, if you have to miss some running, this is a pretty good time of year to do it.

I am hoping to hit Umstead this Saturday morning for my long run and I would like to request that Swatkins and justjen please swat all of the nasty biting flies before Saturday. Thanks.

Dr. Kratzer did not ask me to cut my running. I've been able to reduce the pain by loosening the laces on my shoe, so I think I'm OK. Today I tightened them up a little--away from the problem area and my foot felt OK.

Sorry to hear about the bad experiences with the biting flies and yellow jackets. Today I was bitten five times. Once the humidity gets high these bugs get bad. Also, not to scare anyone, I was getting ready to jump over what I thought was a stick in the American Tobacco Trail and opps it was a copperhead snake! I stopped and walked around him. Add the fact I found a possum in my five-gallon water bucket for my horses this morning and well what a day! Yes he was alive, and I let the little fellow go--but not without a lecture!

Ha ha, I think DH killed half of them, so between us all, maybe we can get them...
My dad told me to use Deep Woods Off, but it sounds like that might not be enough. I'm considering running with a flyswatter. Gotta love running in the South.

Here is an article concerning the best and worst states to exercise outdoors:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,161259,00.html

Sorry, NC was near the bottom--but that doesn't stop us! Does it?!

P.S. Biting flies aren't so bad in Umstead in the morning!
Not so with the American Tobacco Trail.

P.S.S Umstead is extending the South Turkey Creek Trail to wrap into the North Turkey Creek Trail. Before you could run from the south to the north trail through an uncontrolled area (old road bed). They will use some of the old road bed, but are knocking down trees to stay as far from the current road as possible.

Someone may have asked and answered this question before, but where is a good place to do speedwork on the track? Are local high and middle school tracks available for public use? I live about a mile from Reedy Creek Middle, and a few miles from Cary High. Could I use either of their tracks? I run in the morning.

Ran at Umstead this morning, and only had one horsefly at the end of the run, but I killed the sucker, so I was fly-free.

Need another recommendation. Doctor said I need physical Theory on my foot--bone spur. I'm looking for a good physical therapist in the Cary/Apex/Raleigh area that deals with the foot.

Thanks in advance for help offered.

Bob,

I can't help much with the PT. I have gone to a couple for very minor things and I was not overly impressed with either one.

I do have a good massage guy and I asked him for a referral.

Everything is going well, I just got tired of posting my same ole training runs. Richmond is still pretty far away, so most of my runs are the boring same old stuff.

Bob,

Here are the suggestions that I was given:

"There are a lot of really good PTs in the area, but I do not know if any of them specialize in runners. I have worked with some folks from Dunn PT. They have an office on Stonehenge Drive in North Raleigh and Cary. A good friend of mine is Brian Conly and he runs Advanced PT on Falls just south of 540. Brian's number is 878-3334
I do not know the procedure for getting in to see him, so I suggest your friend call and find the right path!

Tim is a great massage thereapist if you ever need one.

Good luck.

Thanks Gottagetfaster.

Your post were not boring to me, but I understand we only have so much time in a day.

I have switched my training from high mileage of 40 mpw to about 25 mpw with an emphasis on intensity these 2.5 weeks left before the Fayetteville 10k race. It really feels good to have the rest in between the training days and to push myself to go fast. I plan on doing the loop in Umstead twice a week since the Fayetteville race has tough hills to overcome. That's where I'll be tomorrow morning.

If you are running Turkey Creek twice a week, you are getting in some very tough hill workouts.

Good luck in Fayetteville.

I saw someone was running in the Chicago Marathon in October but I can't remember who it was. I'm planning to run in that event for my first marathon. My old shoes started to give me shin splints but now that I have new shoes I'm hoping to get back on track (no pun intended) with my training. Anyone else going?

I'm running the Chicago Marathon, my sixth, I hope. I hurt my neck last weekend installing a ceiling fan. I think I have a disk problem. I started PT Thursday and had an MRI last night. Wish me luck. Still running though. Planning on doing 19 out at Umstead tomorrow. Planning on an early start to avoid some of the deer flies.

See you out on Umstead Sunday. I'm only doing 9.4 though. I have noticed a reduction in the deer fly problem in the morning--thank goodness.

How did everyone do on their runs this weekend? I really stuggled on my long run on Saturday. I think the heat and humidity are finally getting to me, but September is only 6 weeks away!
