In the 5K I ran in November here in Raleigh, the winning time was 14:44, and there were 12 runners under 17 min (including a woman). I don't know why they wrote that either. . .I thoguht it was weird too -- happy to see Raleigh in there though!!

The American Tobacco Trail has two sections: Durham and Wake. Here is a general link that should help with the Durham side:
http://www.trianglemtb.com/pages/trails/att.html

For the wake side:
http://www.wakegov.com/county/parks/atc/directions.htm

The Durham side is paved and goes through the city.

The Wake side is a fine granite trail that goes through the country.

I hope to see you on the trail.

The North Carolina Roadrunners club is based out of Raleigh and has several group runs throughout the week. Most of the group run coordinators are great with newbies.

There is also the Cardinal Track Club out of Carborro and Carolina Godiva Track Club out of Durham, but with group runs in Umstead.

Good luck.

Hey all,
Just thought I'd pipe in - I ran the ATT this morning for the first time. Can't say enough good things about this trail..Liz when you are back to running, it'd be easy to get to from where your horse is. It was a great run, and I'm looking forward to getting back out there.

Many thanks to whomever posted the note about bugs, I didn't have any trouble this morning, but next time, I'll be bringing my bug spray!

The I/O half is October 23, registration on line is 26.50 - I signed up yesterday...my first race in my new home state!

justjen, glad to see you had a great run on the Wake ATT. The bugs have not been as bad with this cooler weather--plus I think I killed enough to lower the population!

Need some help finding a Doctor. I've had a pain in my upper left foot for several months. Changed my laces on the left foot last week and it has helped, but the pain has not gone completely away. Thinking I should have it checked. Looking for recommendations for a Podiatrist that is good with running injuries or a sports Doctor that is good with feet. Let me know if you can recommend anyone--thanks in advance.

Bob,

I have used Dr. Kratzer with Raleigh Orthopaedic for some minor foot issues I have had in the past - most PF and the like. I have also used Dr. Jones with Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Associates for non-foot issues. Dr. Jones is a runner and just ran the Chicago marathon, so he seems to work well with runners instead of just telling us to stop running.

Good luck with the feet.

Hello!

I'm looking for some group runs... any idea where to find some?

I'm training for a fall marathon and I run about a 9-10 minute/mile pace.

I'd also love a running buddy!! I just heard that a girl was assaulted running at Bent Creek Trail off Shelley Lake...I run there quite a bit!

Jen,

The black flies out at Umstead sometimes seem to be able to almost pick you up and fly off. I have seen several runners apply bug spray before their Umstead runs. I tend to run there starting around 6 am and get finished before most of the bugs have a chance to wake up.

Congratulations on your first trail badges of honor!

The North Carolina Roadrunners Club has a group that meets at Shelley Lake around 6 am and usually runs 10 miles or so at 8:30 to 10:00 pace. The contact person for the group is Georgia Hagen and you can e-mail her at lenatbks@mindspring.com. I ran with this group a couple of years ago and they are some very nice people.

justjen, sorry to hear about your fall. Umstead has a tendency to wipe people out with the hills!

This cool weather has really helped with a reduction in biting flies. I have non-deet bug spray I use--if I can remember to apply it. I'm not sure it works. I spray my horse with fly repellent, and it doesn't seem to slow down the biting flies from attacking them.

Here is an link to an article describing the attack on Bent Creek Trail. It is disturbing that it happened, but the lady involved fought back and got away. It is sad that it ever happened. I try to keep my eye out for suspicious behavior.

I wonder if there are many runners at 8 am on a weekday? On weekends the greenway seems to have enough people on it to be safe, but I bet there were very few people out there at 8 am on a weekday.

My wife keeps telling me how dangerous the world is for women and I keep telling her that she is paranoid. I guess as usual my wife is right again.

Be safe ladies.

for anyone who doesn't have it already - Sports Authority and I'm sure many others sells Runner's Mace, it has a nifty little velcro strap so you don't have to hold it - it wraps nicely around your palm, finger can even be right on the button, Just In Case.
I often feel foolish grabbing it before I go run, but man, I'm going to kick myself even harder if I don't grab it and heaven forbid, need it.

Also, Inisde Out Sports has group runs leaving from both Raleigh and Cary stores, call them for times/distances.

Gottagetfaster, have you made the commitment to go in the Richmond marathon?

How many mpw are you doing now? Your 12 mile with a tempo mix looks like you may be getting ready.

I have reserved my hotel room for Richmond, but I have not registered for the race. I can cancel the room a few days before the race and you can register for the race right up to race day. I have had injuries in the past, so I am a bit paranoid about signing up too early if I do not have to.

I am probably starting my tempo work a bit too soon. However, I started it this early last year and it worked well for me in Richmond.

I am currently running around 60 to 65 mpw. It will max out at around 70, so I may also be asking too much from this body.

Have you commited to Richmond yet?

Hey y'all.
I run in Cary, Sunday long runs at Umstead. I can't believe I've missed this post for the past 8 pages!

Thanks for the tips earlier about trails in Cary, and for the ATT link. I'm always looking for new places to run. Running on the Cary sidewalks is painful sometimes...

Good luck to those training for Richmond. I ran it last year, first marathon. I thought it was awesome. Right now I'm training for the RNR half mary Labor Day weekend in Va Beach.

Hooray for summer and fall racing seasons!

Well my focus is the 23 July 2005 3rd Annual Running of the Bull's 10K and breaking the 50 minute mark. I want to do Umstead and Grandfather next year and feel Richmond may be too much to add. Still my mpw are creeping up closer to 40 and I feel strong. It wouldn't take much to add an extra ten miles for the week and have a good training program going for Richmond. The only think I don't like about marathon training is the lack of speed work, and I want to use speed work to see about getting my 10k and 5k times down.

Keep up the training. You got me motivated!

Bob

Bob,

I hear you about the lack of speedwork in marathon training. However, my 10k time has dropped pretty significantly as a result of my marathon training. I have only run a couple of 5ks, so I don't know how the marathon training has affected those times. I think that the endurance gained from marathon training, along with my weekly fartlek run and tempo/intervals does help with the 10ks, but maybe not as much as a more speed specific form of training.

Good luck on the 23rd.

I take it back--adding an extra ten miles would be difficult. I have to compromise for work and home to be able to get 30-40 mpw now. I remember I was taking 1/2 day vacations to get in 18-20 mile runs in Umstead for the Umstead marathon.

We will see. I can decide after the 10k.
