Wondered if anyone was in this? I planned on going out Saturday morning for a run around the park and give my emotional support to the runners.

I will be working one of the aid stations on Saturday morning and afternoon, but there is no way you could get me to try and run 50 or 100 miles!

Have fun sharing the trials with the ultra folks.

Looks like a squall line will pass through Saturday morning. This is going to be rough on the Umstead 100 runners and volunteers. I think I'll push my run in Umstead to Sunday morning.

Good luck runners and volunteers.

My favorite Duke Forest loop is on Whitfield road. Just east a half mile from the New Hope fire station on Whitfield there is an entrance with many cars parked along the road. The wide open trail loops around to the fire station on Whitfield and then you follow Whitfield back to the car. It's a scenic, hilly 4 mile loop. Great for hill training. Many runners and dog owners. I run with my dog always.

Gottagetfaster, it looked a bit dicey Saturday morning. How did you and the runners fair in the Umstead 100? I came out Sunday morning and saw about thirty some runners still on the course.

I was there from 10:30 until 1 pm and everyone looked good. I had to go do some work around the house for a couple of hours and that is when the weird weather started. I think the temperature dropped 15 degrees in a few minutes and there was some hail. I got back out to Umstead aroun 3 pm and there were some really wet and cold runners. We were providing custom fit garbage bags and they were going like hotcakes! Several of the runners looked to be in rough shape. They had started their laps in fairly warm weather and proceeded to run through rain and ice and with the temperature dropping very fast. Our aid station was about 4 miles from the start/finish, so most of the runners were just trying to make it back there so they could change clothes.

This was a great experience and I would highly recommend it to everyone - helping at the aid station that is, not actually running one of these events.

Does anyone know of problems parking on Trenton Road outside Umstead Park? There are "no parking" signs posted, but it seems to be a common practice to park there. I figure its a risk, but where else can you go to run before the park opens at 8:00 AM?

I have parked by the No Parking signs on Reedy Creek road on many Saturday mornings and have never received a ticket or gotten towed. However, I am ususally leaving the park by 9 am, so I do not know what happens after that time.

There are usually 5 to 10 cars parked when I am leaving, so there are a lot of other people using the same entrence.

I have been a bit concerned about the safety of my car, but so far nothing has happened.

Thanks Gottagetfaster.

Well with the Cary Road Race days away I have successfully gotten sick! I can only hope to feel well Saturday to at least put in an effort for my 50 minute finish--but not looking good.

Any chance someone could write an Umstead 100 report? I would like to hear about anyone's experience in the race.

Calfpain, welcome to the board.

I am hoping that your name is based on past problems and that you are currently a healthy runner.

I found two Umstead 100 reports in Runners World Forum:
http://forums.runnersworld.com/thread.jspa?threadID=256232&tstart=0
and
http://forums.runnersworld.com/thread.jspa?threadID=256583&tstart=0

Gottagetfaster, great compliments on the aid--good job!

Hope to see some of you out at the Cary Road Race tomorrow. My fever broke last night and I feel better. I still have congestion in my chest area, but I am able to run. It is frustrating to train hard for a race and have an illness steal away your hard work!

Good luck tomorrow. I will be skipping the Cary race for the first time in 3 years. My training has be very poor since Umstead, so I am just lay low for a while.

I woke up this morning with hope for a good finishing time in the Cary Road Race. My congestion was less and other than a backache, I felt OK. With some stretching, the back felt better. When the gun went off I went out what I thought was my 10k pace, but it was too fast and had trouble with my breathing after a minute of running. I was doing OK for awhile following my 50 minute pace. I started getting off pace at mile three and didn't have the heart to push myself harder. I enjoyed the Cary Road Race except for my finishing time of 52 minutes.

The amphitheater and lake were beautiful. The course was fast with a hill to conquer--twice due to the loop. No waiting for a bathroom. Great weather. A fun place to hang out with family and friends. I hope they hold the race in Regency Park next year!

Having finally gone to the doctor, I have learned I have bronchitis. I hope to be back training soon, but for now I'll take it easy.

Can anyone recommend a good 5k race in May/June in Cary/Raleigh area?

Run for Research is in RTP 1st weekend in June. Nice hilly course, good post-race food, massages, music, etc. Race for the Cure is in June as well but I don't much go for the mega-races. Anyone know if the Great Raleigh Road Race is being run this year?

Ooh I may have to run this one! How hilly are we talking?

I am so thrilled, I can run again I love every second of it. Even though I haven't even gotten up to 3 miles yet. Soon. Maybe next week if my shin feels better.

Thanks Swatkins, I'll look into the RTP race. I'm not into the mega races either.

I've stopped running until this bronchitis goes away--it is putting up a fight with the antibotics.

I decided to run in the Apex 5k May 7th. A small race of about 80-90 people. I have regained my initial fitness before the bronchitis and hope to set a PB.

This might be it for racing until July 23rd Run For the Bulls 10k in Fayetteville.

Good luck to all you runners who are racing this spring.

The Wake County American Tobacco Trail has been extended from 3.5 to 5.25. See the web site:
http://www.wakegov.com/county/parks/atc/default.htm

It has been open since late March, but I haven't been able to do the five miles out and back until last Sunday. The extra 1.75 miles is quite beautiful. There is a new parking lot at the end of the 5.25 with access to White Oak Church Road. It was a great run being able to cover ten miles with one loop.

They have also added restrooms to the New Hill-Olive Chapel Road and White Oak Church Road parking areas.

I hope to see you on the trail.

Bob

Hi guys,
I've just moved to NC (tomorrow will be a week!) and I'm actively looking for places to run - I've found some of the ones you mentioned here, but I can't find any information on Lake Johnson, where is it?
I'm in Holly Springs, but will be doing most of my outdoor running on my days off, so I could possibly travel any distance for a good run.
Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the area.

I am partial to the greenway in Raleigh. The portion of the greenway that I most run on starts at Shelley Lake. There are not usually too many runners on the greenway - at least not between 6 and 9 am on Saturdays.

Hope you find some good running routes around here and again, welcome to the neighborhood.

Sorry for the lack of details.

Here is a link to map of the greenways. The map is not very detailed, but there are more detailed maps at the same site.

http://www.trianglegreenways.org/North%20Raleigh%20Greenway.htm

Shelley Lake is located on Millbrook Road just off of Creedmore Rd. The greenway connects to the loop around Shelley Lake on the far side of the dam (as you come from either parking lot). You run over the dam and take a right and you are on one portion of the greenway.

Hopefully this was a bit of help.

justjen, welcome to the Triangle. My favorite running is in Umstead and my second is the Wake County American Tobacco trail. If you look at earlier posts you can pick up web sites with details.

Umstead is a great place to run since the hill work can really help with your training.

I hope to see you out on the trail.
