Good luck, Umstead runners! Be sure to post a trip report when you can feel you various body parts again!

Hey, my weight is 180 lbs too--except I'm 5'8"!

Sorry I did not get a chance to resond before the race. I was out of town last Thursday and Friday.

The race was HARD! I am not sure if it was the hills ( I still think they should be called mountains) or trying to get over the flu from 2 weeks ago. Either way, miles 24 and 25 seemed to be all straight up hill. My quads are still yelling at me.

Other than that, the race was a blast. I do not usually run the single track at Umstead, so this was new for me. Luckily the single track sections were during the first half and therefore I was not dragging. I was a ton of fun just trying not to fall on my face. However, the uphill section of Sycamore was not particularly fun.

This was also my first marathon where I was offered Bar B Q at the finish. You have to love North Carolina.

I hope everyone else did well and had fun as well.

I will write a race report later, but I will say now I had great fun! Racers, volunteers and supporters were great. Here in this photo I met Ben who was running his 37th marathon and will run the Umstead 100 April 2nd! Ben is 60 years old, and he ran the Myrtle Beach marathon two weeks before this race!!

http://salutor.blogs.com/photos/umstead_trail_marathon_20/dscn0487.html

This marathon was tough, but I really felt I did well. I walked the shut-in simulator hill and the wheels-fall-off hill, but kept on trucking for a 4:40:26 finish--right on goal!

Gottagetfaster, sorry to hear that the flu got in your way, but you got through it!

175 people signed up, 142 people started, 131 are shown to finish.

Great job meeting your goal.

How are your legs feeling today? I was amazed at how sore my quads were, but they seem to be recovering today.

Before the race I spoke with a guy who ran the Umstead 100 last year and since had major knee surgery. He ran the Umstead Marathon as a "test" before he runs the Umstead 100 again this year. Wow. There are some tough folks out there.

Still a little sore. Going out this afternoon for a 5k recovery run.

I asked Ben, "How do you train for a 100 mile run?" He said, "Run multiple marathons." I am confident that I won't be getting into anything over the marathon distance!

The Ultra Marathoners are a different breed. I thought about giving the Umstead 50 miler a try, but my common sense prevailed. I just do not have the available time needed to train for those distances - not to mention the physical or mental toughness.

Take it easy on your recovery run.

Well I threw the recovery run out the window and pushed myself for a 26 minute 5k. I feel free now to push myself and not worry how this might effect my ten miler tomorrow or my 18 miler this weekend. I feel much better getting back to 5k and 10k runs with speedwork thrown in. I will try to keep some long distance running of about 13-15 miles every 2-3 weeks.

Hope to see you in the Cary Road Race April 9th. My goal is to beat my 53 minute 10k time.

OK, I wrote the Umstead Trail Marathon report as promised.

I hope a few others could share their experience with this race.

See you out there,

Bob

Hey all!

I think I saw one, but any SW Durham runners? I'm just restarting my running career after a 5-year break (oops). If anyone has tips about where to run, who to run with, etc., I'd love to hear them.

Also...good shoe places? I had a phenomenal place in Boston, and another one in DC, but I'm at a loss here...I'm a big fan of the little independently-run shops staffed entirely by runners.

Can't help you much, but no one else responded!

For Durham running you could contact the Carolina Godiva Track Club http://www.carolinagodiva.org/ There is some good trail running in Durham.

I don't live in Durham, but I work in RTP. I can't think of any running shoe stores, either, except maybe that new New Balance store across from SouthPoint Mall. Lots of shoe stores in Cary & Raleigh, though...is it worth it to you to drive here?

I think I've found one in Durham...9th Street Active Feet or something. It's near my school, and seems to be a pretty serious running store where they actually look at your gait, etc.

As for running buddies...I'm still looking? Anyones? Bueller?

As bianchilvr mentioned, Carolina Godiva Track Club is a great place to look for running buddies. They have weekly runs in Duke Forest and Umstead Park and you don't have to be a member to participate in these group runs. I suggest showing up for a couple of these runs. Good luck on your return to running! I hope to see you on the trails!

My physical therapist told me that there is a running/athletic shoe store in Cameron Village that has a force plate to help analyze what type of shoe would be best for you. Has anyone gone there and done that? Was it worth it? And what store was it; he didn't know the name!
Thanks

And thanks all for the advice about the somewhere-but-asphalt running.

lesil22, as you can see from some previous postings, the Carolina Godiva Track Club http://www.carolinagodiva.org/ is a runners club with weekly runs in Umstead and Duke Forest that don't require being a member to attend. Also, the North Carolina Road Runners Club is another place to check out: http://www.ncroadrunners.org/ for group runs.

Good luck on your running.

Bob

In addition to the 2 running clubs mentioned, the Inside Out Sports store has occassional beginners group runs in Cary. You can check them out at http://www.insideoutsports.com/athletes_corner/newsitem.aspx?id=73

I googled this (haven't been there)...it is The Athlete's Foot.

I've seen the Duke Forest trails, but where does one park? And is it safe for a woman to go alone during the day? Right now I'm doing laps around my apt. complex and man is it boring...

cinderella 18- I am not a woman, but I don't think I would worry much about running in duke forest during the daytime; I have never seen anyone sketchy in there, mostly just dogwalkers and other joggers. It's really not all that isolated. there are lots of trails, I don't know them all; when I go I just park at one of the spots along nc-751. If you're looking for something that's a little bit in between, you can run the trail around the duke golf course; you don't really see much of the golfers, it's moderately hilly, and very well-travelled (no safety concerns). To get there, park in the lot just south of Erwin Rd on nc-751, or in the lot near the washington duke inn (751 and science drive). If you'd like to meet up to run a few of the other trails, let me know and I'd be happy to try to arrange something.

Just a reminder: Cary Road Race April 9th, Saturday, 5k and 10k races. We have four people from our company running. See http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1184739
to sign-up. Also see http://www.townofcary.org/depts/prdept/events/crr.htm
for more information.

I ran the course and there is one so-so hill that you have to run up and down twice since the 10k course is a double of the 5k course. This course is faster than last years hilly course near Cary High School. Also, they finally have chip time and split the 5k race to start an hour and forty-five minutes after the 10k race.

Looking to break 50 minutes in the 10k--thanks to the training in Umstead Park!! I hope to see some of you out there.

Bob

Does the Cary Road Race still end on the track? I always thought that was kind of cool. I finally made out to the Turkey Creek trail--it is an incredible trail. What a hill!

They moved the Cary Road Race to Regency Park. I think this is a good idea. I ran the course, and I think you may enjoy the one mile run around the lake to make up for not finishing on the track at Cary High School.

Umstead 100 starts Saturday:
http://www.ncroadrunners.org/umstead/
Wondered if anyone was in this? I planned on going out Saturday morning for a run around the park and give my emotional support to the runners.

Bob

Hmm, thanks, didn't think of that!! My friend bought some shoes there and was very unhappy -- they made her knees hurt after running about 5-10 miles in them, they still looked fine, but they wouldn't take them back! I don't know about going there. . .Has anyone ever been (the one in cameron village?)
