TY

If you're out at DH's workplace on Saturday mornings you might see me shuffling by. I've moved my long runs to that time because my DW and DS are in Tae Kwon Do just down the road from there at that time, so the time is separate anyway. Just look for a slow, dorky-looking middle-age guy with a few too many pounds (but all his hair) and a mustache that's breaking all the running attire "rules" (cotton t-shirts, heavy cotton shorts, etc.). If it's too cold or wet I'll be on the treadmills at the Y, but you might see me if it's nice.

Shelley Lake and Lake Lynn are similar in that both have parking just below the dams that form them (Shelley Lake on Millbrook, Lake Lynn on Lynn Road), but also have recreation areas in a different location with its own parking. Lake Lynn's is off Ray Road, and the jogging trail has a quarter-mile spur that gets you to the lake itself. There is a playground, but I think the one at the Sertoma Arts Center on Shelley Lake is better. (On the other hand you did say you were planning on renting for awhile. If you're looking at apartments, there are several complexes that back up to Lake Lynn and have direct access to the main trail.)

Hey Ty you don't want to stay in Fuquay??

I guess your work and husbands is north of Raleigh the traffic is stinko getting up that way.
We just moved to Fuquay and love it. I have been running out towards harnett county, down rt 55 and 401 lots of sidewalks and wide shoulders. Then there is harris lake the place with the park beautiful and you get to see Homer simpson at the Nuke Plant. Was out in a Kayak this past summer and had to take a picture of that cooling tower! Nutty. But we sure have nice low electric rates!!!

Umstead Marathon filled up in less than three weeks?!? Dangdangdangdang. If anyone's registered and decides not to run, please mention it here in case one of us can take your spot. <sigh> Guess I'll have to wait until 2008 or run as a bandit next year. Dangdang.

Somebody asked earlier if anyone else will be running with Mickey at Disney next month. I'll be there; it will be my second marathon -- Marine Corps in October was my first. I'm not fast, but I can cover the distance. And Mickey's not leaving any money on the table; I got an e-mail from him offering me access to the "VIP runners lounge" for "only $50."

Surprised no one mentioned last weekend's Jingle Bell 5k at St. Mary's. Nice fast race on Hillsborough Street, although a little bit cold. Good turnout, decent t-shirts, and a nice spread afterwards.

My t-shirt of the year: UNC Hooker 5k from November. Good colors, graphics, and nice shirt material.

Umstead fills up fast; I don't know if banditing will be possible, it only has 200 racers and they're asked to carpool.

quote:
Isaiah 40:31 says, "but those who hope in the LORD
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

It definitely does not describe me now. Edited to say I mean in a weariness sense, not meaning anything in a religious sense.

You don't have to be a bandit to run it. Umstead is a public park. Bring your own water and food, and join the runners.

7.5 miles today at a slow pace. Longest run since May. The slow pace made it feel good. I feel great that my running is improving. Did some strides at the end and they felt good.

Well I got up early so I could bike to the American Tobacco Trail. After feeding the horses, I start riding down the street and I notice, hmmm seems to be pretty foggy and I wonder if I should be out here? Well I got smart after a mile and turned around. Drove the ATT and ran 3.3. Legs feel strong, but with some soreness from the weekend run and biking.

I love this weather!

Yep, Umstead fills fast! It did last year too.

I ran the Jacksonville marathon yesterday. It was, as promised, a completely flat course and a lot of it was in the shade. But it was hot and humid too. I think it was 60 at the start and warmed into the mid/upper 70s. Ran 3:29, which I was happy with.

My legs feel great today. I have had no problem running up and down the stairs at home or at work. But I'm taking a rest day anyway!

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Bit, you ran a marathon in Florida! Too hot for me! You did a great job breaking 3:30. You finished 137 place out of 902 runners, and you were fifth out of 41 for your age group--super job. Any more suprise races this winter?

Brick today: 16.4 mile bike ride and one mile run afterwards. I hope to do a 10k tomorrow.

Then with two days swimming only: big ten miler Saturday!

Enjoy the weather today

Great job, bit! Another solid marathon. I think you should spend this spring working on your speed by running lots of shorter races and try to really pop a goal marathon in the fall.

BTW - Does crossrunner still post here? I have some special ed. questions, if anyone else wants to contact me off line (email is in CR profile).

I'm registered for a couple runs this winter and Umstead in March. These are not "goal" races and I'm not specifically training for them. Just for fun!
(Oh and probably Boston too. Although I haven't registered yet.)

BrookT, speed is something I want to work on! I need to train with a group and do some shorter races. My marathon PR is two years old and I need to fix that! Maybe something like Chicago in the fall?!

Bob, good luck with the 10miler this weekend

Bit, outstanding job on that marathon. That is really impressive. Give Boston a shot. We will cheer you on from here(unless one of us can come up with a miracle and qualify also).

I can't wait to see what you can do once you get some speed work in.

Hey bit, congratulations on your 7th marathon of 2006! You must be very proud of your performance this year. How many are you planning for 2007?

I'm recovering nicely from my marathon 13 days ago. I've run over 50 miles at a slow pave over the past 2 weeks including a couple of 10 milers and feel great. I'm headed to NY for the holidays and will try to keep running over there.

Hope everyone has a merry christmas and happy new year!

Thanks guys!

Not sure how many I will do next year. I didn't plan to do seven this year. I thought maybe I could do four in a year, but a few more snuck in there! : )

Weeleeto, sounds like you are recovering nicely! Good luck running in NY!

Hope everyone has a nice holiday!

Well I planned on a 10 miler yesterday, but I didn't feel right about it. I ran 7.3 miles and it was harder than it should have been--even though I was going at a slow pace. I had a similar problem Wednesday when I had to cut off a planned 6.7 mile run down to 5.7 miles--and had to walk some to finish. Well the answer came an hour after the 7.3 mile run, I had a virus. Suddenly my muscles ached and I got a fever. My guess is that I had the virus and my body was successfully fighting it until I stressed it and the virus then got a the better of me. I feel better this morning, but cancelled riding the 33 mile bike group ride. I'm going to take off from aerobic activity until at least Tuesday.

Feeling better. Did 2.3 miles this morning with a strong finish with a 3:48 1/2 mile sprint. Biked forty minutes for lunch. The YMCA pool is closed for lobby renovation, otherwise, I could throw in swimming tonight to round it out. I will do some strength exercising and stretching later today.

Glad you feel better, Bob! I'm taking an impromptu day off because I feel like I may have strained my calf where it attaches to the back of my knee. I'll give it a shot tomorrow. This was my first day with no running since 11/3. I don't even know what to do! I cleaned my whole house with all the time I had.

Anyone do strength training? I have taken it up on the hope of improved performance. Plus my bad neck needed stronger muscles.

Bob, I used to do a lot of weight training in my misspent youth, but none in the last decade, so I can probably answer general questions, but not in how it weight training relates to running!

I ran seven miles last night on pavement, which was cool. Longest run since the injury. I seem to be recovered, finally.

Bit, Chicago sounds a little $$$$ for me, but I love the city, so maybe... I'm more likely to tackle something like WineGlass or Steam Town or Hudson/Mohawk next fall.

This summer, I think I'm going to focus on summer track. Godiva runs a summer track series for all-comers. It has events from 100m up to 5000m, alternating long distance and middle distance weeks.

I'm too old and delicate for the sprints, but some of the longer middle distances (esp. the mile), sound very appealing, and would serve as great speed work after a winter/spring of easy base running.

Who's running Umstead? I might go volunteer, dunno.

Has anyone found strength training to help increase their performance in running or biking?

We have several people running Umstead in this forum. I would love to hear about their training.

Yesterday was so nice. I finially ran my ten miles. It was tougher than I thought it would be, but I finished without walking. My PF complained slightly, but I recovered soon afterwards. This run reminded me why I hate training for a marathon.

I have to go to China on Business in a week, so I'm going to concentrate on biking and swimming this week becasue all I can do in China is run.

I'm preparing for Umstead. I went out there Sunday and ran 17 miles with 13 at "marathon pace."

I'm thinking about running the Country Music Marathon in Nashville on April 28. If I do that, I'll probably run this one easy, just to finish and have fun so I can focus on a pace for Nashville. Is six weeks long enough to recover and prepare for another marathon?

Hey guys. I haven’t posted in awhile because well I haven’t run in a long time. The foot problem that I had at mile 5 of the marathon is probably more serious than I thought. I think I broke my foot. I go in for x-rays on Thursday. It has not healed much since the race. This is probably going to side line me for awhile. It doesn’t hurt to the point that I can’t stand it but I have some really weird shooting pains and a lot of numbness. Anyway I will probably be out all of January unless the doctor can find the problem and then clear me to run. Anyway great job last season. We all made some pretty good progress. I think bit deserves an award for running so many marathons, staying healthy, and posting some pretty sick times. Hopefully I will get back into it soon. Just sitting around is killing me. I have gained about 20 pounds since my race(10 lbs over my normal running weight). I tried running once since the marathon and I could tell that my foot just isn’t right.

Happy new year to everyone. Hope to race with you again sometime!

Jason, WOW. Very sorry to hear that. I hope you find the cause and heal quickly.

I have to agree: Bit deserves the 2006 Best Triangle Runner Award!

Boneshealing, yes you can do it if you treat Umstead as a training run. Runners who do 50 and 100 miles runs uses multiple marathons as training runs, so it can be done. The key is to avoid injury and overtraining. I think 17 miles at marathon pace is too fast--way too fast. You need to back-off some so you can last five months of very long and difficult running. Best of luck and let us know how your training progresses.

Ran two miles this morning and biked 16.4 miles this afternoon. Feel strong. Back to pool tomorrow.
