Yea you are right a goal is a goal. If # 2 can beat me on my training course then more power to him. However, I am going to look him up from the race pictures and you better believe I am going to give him a run for his money when he tries to overtake me on one of those hills.

Honestly, the prizes were all basically the same last year. I won’t say what they were in case someone wants it to be a surprise on the awards day. I don’t even know if it will be the same as last year. I will say that I really enjoy the prize I got for 3rd place last year and I use it quite often. The prize from last year says 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. Which actually does mean something to me. Most of the time you can get 3rd place in the series age group with a solid 4 runs. However, 1st and 2nd place in the age groups is usually quite an accomplishment.

For everyone running today please be careful. It is a lot hotter than I thought. I just did my run and I burned through a water bottle that I carry by the 5K mark. I normally don’t even finish it after a 10K. That sun was relentless today. It is kind of windy also. Anyway I still had a 43:18 with the adverse conditions. My pacing is much more consistent now without the stroller. It looks like this heat will be gone for the Old Reliable on Sunday. That is a good thing. The course has no shelter on it at all. You just bake on Hillsborough street if it is really warm and sunny out.

Good tip. I waited until a little later in the day for an easier 7 miles. Temps were better by 5 or so I think. Am looking forward to the Old Reliable Sunday (hopefully the forecast holds). I did this one last year, and I'm hoping to try and improve a bit on last year's time if possible. Also looking forward to the new start/finish on Fayetteville Street - should be neat.

Question for folks who use the Wake ATT now that hunting season has started. Anyone ever have any issues/encounters hearing gunshots (from hunters) out there for your morning runs? I've heard others mention it, and found it somewhat... well... discomforting. [ I'm trying to *clear* my mind when running, not worry about the residual cap flying through the air! ]

I enjoyed using the Wake ATT during Aug/Sep - found it great for long-runs, nice surface, nice mile makers, etc. However, haven't been out in a while and am interested to know what it's like during the late fall/winter mornings - if anyone has experience. Thanks.

I was out there today and it was peaceful, but it was in the middle of a weekday. I would be surprised if hunting was allowed from the ATT, actually. Is it?

Right - I don't think it's allowed from the ATT itself, but I think it is allowed on some of the surrounding land. [ I'm thinking perhaps especially in the Wake section near the trailhead [ Mile Marker 0 - 2.5 or so ].

Perhaps it's only an issue/concern early in the morning (and/or before dawn). Back in the summer heat, an early run (maybe even slightly pre-dawn) was helpful (critical if going long), even though the trail "officially" doesn't open until 8am I don't think.

During the winter, getting on the trail before 8am likely won't be necessary, so maybe it's a non-issue. Was just wondering if others had ever observed (or rather heard anything "in the distance") during hunting season.

I just wanted to say good luck to everyone also. It should be a very nice weekend for racing. Boy it was hot today though. It was almost 80 when I did my 6.2 this afternoon. Felt more like late spring then late Fall. There is nothing like doing a little warm weather training in mid November. I guess that is why is such a great place to run.

Jay, thank goodness the marathon is Sunday when it will be perfect cool weather rather than tomorrow--great PR weather. Sunday will be great weather for the Old Reliable as well. Richmond marathoners have their work cut out for them tomorrow.

Ran yesterday twice: 2.5 miles easy in the morning and a moderate paced 5k in the afternoon. Today biked 16+ miles. Amazing that biking is so less stressful from heat on days like today. It was agreat fun ride, and I never worried about the heat.

I wish best of luck to all racers this weekend. Post your race results and let us know any interesting stories.

I’m a first time poster, but I have been following, enjoying and getting good advice from this thread for quite some time. Although, I’m not as fast as some of the regulars here, I’m getting addicted to this running thing. My very first race was a marathon I ran back on 4/30/06. I completed it in 4:23. I want to try to break the 4 hour mark on my next marathon. I’m currently training for the Kiawah Island marathon in SC on 12/9 and so far the training is going well. If anyone has run that marathon would love to here any comments you may have. I ran the Inside-out half marathon in 1:50 and will also be running the old reliable run this Sunday. I live in Cary and just wanted to say hi and good luck to everyone!

ATT during hunting season: The hunters hunt on both sides of the trail for the first few miles of the Wake ATT, but can not shoot across the trail nor can they carry loaded weapons on the trail or shoot from the trail. Hunters can use the trail. I have seen hunters on the trail, mainly in the morning, and in once incident seen them pulling their kill in a small Childs wagon down the ATT. You hear gun shots in the morning, sometimes close to the trail, but they are few and far between. I wear an orange shirt in the winter. It is not blaze orange, so I worry a little. Hunters normally hunt on holidays and the weekend, but you will see them out in the middle of the week. Many of them are hunting before dawn--when it is good and dark.

Not trying to scare anyone away from the trail--just trying to give the facts. One time I was running near bridge at the 1/2 mile marker at about 8 AM and heard a gun shot not a hundred yards away from me. Let me tell you, I was three feet into the air.

No OBX for me. Work obligations, a nagging foot injury, and a sick daughter have conspired against me.

Not sure what the deal is with the foot. Feels better now, still slightly sore on the bottom behind my second toe on my right foot (second metatarsal head). Now that I think back I've had some soreness there over the last month, but it really bothered me after my 10 miler on Sunday, then only got moderately better over this week. Googling seems to indicate it might be a metatarsal stress fracture, but it doesn't seem painful enough for that.

I'll go see the foot doctor whenever I can fit it in. I plan to do an easy run tomorrow and see how it feels.

At least my daughter is starting to feel better. Still got a ton of work obligations this weekend though.

Still, bummer after 24 weeks of training.

Oh well, there will be other marathons I guess.

Bob - thanks for the info on ATT. Interesting stuff. So... just when does hunting season end?? That might be when I'll be ready to venture back out to that section of the trail anyway! .

Jay - Tough break man. I've often thought with marathon training, how tough it is to put in all the hours, but on top of that, have the planets align to pull all that together (without other issues coming up) - for just that certain few hours stretch. [ I guess that why it's such a special distance ].

You'll be back though - maybe leverage your training towards Kiawah, Thunder Road, or Myrtle Beach?

Hi!

There're lots of Cary types on this thread, so you're in good company.

I've obviously never run Kiawah - but I had considered it as my first marathon. Sounds like it'll be a nice race!

Weeleeto, welcome. Yea Cary is one of the best places to run in the country. The weather is good almost all year round(summer mornings that is). Do you ever run on Cary Parkway? That is where I usually train. Good luck at the Old reliable. It is a very flat course. Remember to save some for the last 1.5 miles though. They are almost totally down a slight hill. Perfect for picking up a minute or so. Hope to see you there. You will recoginize me by the big yellow stroller.

It looks like the 2nd empire results are posted up through 4 races. I think I have a little more lead in my age group than I thought. Right now I am 15 points ahead of second place. However, my lowest race total is 10 points lower than his lowest. You have to drop 1 race so even if he beats me by 15 points my total will end up 10 points higher than his as long as my total for the Turkey trot is not lower than the last 5K. By my calculations 25 points is something like 1:15 seconds for the 8K. Should make for a great race!

Nice job out there today, bit. Conditions must have been tough towards the end - everyone faded - you much less than most. I had some other buddies that were running and you were a minute in front of one of them at the half, but you finished 20 minutes ahead! Even the some of the elites faded. Hope you had a good experience, despite the conditions.

Is anyone familiar with this Apex 5K course? I'm thinking of coming out for this race next weekend. Looks like a gentle roller on a bike path - might be a little tight with several hundred runners, but migh be a good time.

Good luck Old Reliable folks! I'd head out, but I need to get in a long run tommorrow.

Brooktrout,

Yea I am very familiar with that course even though I have never run the race. Most of it is on a 5-6 foot wide path. However, it starts about ¾ of a mile before you get on the path. There is plenty of time for the race to spread out. It is extremely hilly. It is run in the right direction though. I used to train on it with my son in the stroller. We used to go the opposite direction. There is a 1/8 of a mile 40-50 foot high hill that is extremely steep. The race goes down that hill. We used to go up it. That used to be a fun one with the stroller. I think that a local guy named T Walters always wins it. He just happens to be the guy that usually runs a 34 minute 10K with the stroller in the Old Reliable. I don’t know if he runs the Turkey trot with the stroller though. I was planning on running it but without the stroller. Still not sure though. I still have a few goals to achieve and one more to add. I don’t think I have a serious shot at the sub 40 10K tomorrow but a sub 19 is entirely possible at the Turkey Trot.

JasonsDrivingForce, couldn’t agree more about Cary being such a great place to run. The weather is great and I really like all the hills around this area. A couple of years ago, I moved from Charleston, SC where’s pretty flat. At first, getting used to the hills was kind of tough. Yes, I do run quite a bit on Cary Parkway. I usually start on Lake Pine, down Cary Parkway, High House, Maynard and back on Lake Pine. You’ve probably passed me before. Thanks for the tip on the old reliable, this will be my first 10k ever. I’m hoping to run it at a 7:45-8:00 pace. But, I’m not sure if I should start at that pace and hold it throughout the race or start slower and pick up the pace. It should be fun although I'm a little nervous.

Brooktrout, I’m also running the Apex 5K Turkey Trot next weekend. Including the inside-out half marathon, this is me my 3rd race in a month – I told you, I’m getting addicted to this running thing! I’m thinking about running the Inside-Out 8K Turkey Trot, but I first want to see how my body feels since I’m also doing an 18 miler tomorrow and a 20+ miler the day after next weekend’s 5K in preparation for my 12/9 marathon.

Like JasonsDrivingForce, I’m very familiar with the Apex 5K course. I live less than a mile from there and most of my short runs are on that trail. It’s a very hilly course, but I was relieved when I noticed that we are going down the hill that JasonsDrivingForce describes - should be able to pick-up some good speed down that hill.

Looks like the weather has taken a turn for the worse. It is very windy and there is a lot of rain in the area. The race is still on and the rain is supposed to stop. Just check the schedule on the link below to see if they cancel the race. Lightning or an extreme wind(Not likely) is about the only thing that would cancel or delay it.

http://www.runnc.com/exec/young/schedule.cfm?publicationID=283#orr

I might not run today because I don't bring my kids out in the bad weather. If it clears up though I might still do. Game time decision. Good luck to everyone.

Thanks J!

It was a tough day! I was uncomfortably hot by mile TWO.
But the first half went pretty well. There were rolling hills with some shade. I slowed down a little bit from the half to mile 16. And from 16 to the end, I was just trying to finish. The heat and sun were really getting to me. I just felt completely drained.

Oh well. I finished in 3:35, which isn't that terrible.

Richmond was nice though and a lot of people came out to spectate the race!

The nice part about running slow is that my legs are only a tiny bit sore! I think I will still take today off though.

Rain will end before lunch and the Old Reliable race should have fantastic weather.

OBX marathon was a wet one. Jay, I'm very sorry for your race. I definitely would look to Myrtle or VA Beach or SC for another marathon.

Bitbit, glad to see you survived Richmond. I hate those hot races!

So, I ran in Umstead this morning. I ran one end of Reedy Creek Road to the other, before venturing out on to the Turkey Creeks.

Anyways, I ran past the Airport Overlook on ReedyCreek road until I encountered a park entrance gait. The road appeared to continue beyond the gate, but it was too dark to see much detail.

Looking at a map, it looks like Reedy Creek road continues under i-40 and dead-ends into Weston Parkway. Is the road paved and residential after leaving the park? Does it hook up to the Cary Greenway system at it's terminus?

A Durham runner/middle school teacher for students with learning disabilities here. I like the Wake County portion of the tobacco trail for long runs on Saturdays and Sundays. The only drawback is that it is really flat. It is an easy run for building up your miles but I think it hurt me a little bit at MCM to have not done more hills. I'm also a slow runner-11:00 for long runs, 8-9 for shorter runs when I feel good, the stars are aligned, someone is chasing me, etc.
