Swatkins, thanks. Yes, I know the bike is hurting the recovery. I try my best to minimize the head tilt (I even purchased a flat handle bar bike instead of a drop down). I'm doing traction everyday, which has yet to help. The running hurts the neck/back/arm more than the biking. So it's all bad. I will try to let time go by before considering surgery. ------------------ I am dynamic and the mountain is static, but when I run up it I swear it moves. Bob My User Profile

Cross-posting from the Fall Marathon Trainer's thread over in mainstream racing:Been a few weeks since I checked in. 20 mile long run today on-top of 40 miles for a total of 60 this week. That's with 12 miles yesterday and ... I had my best 20 miles ever. My last marathon my 20 mile split was 2:47 and change. I ran 20 today in 2:44 and change or 8:12 pace. My goal MP is 8:00 pace, so this was a huge confidence builder. I didn't intend to run it so fast but the whole run just felt awesome. I think the key was tanking up on my wife's banana bread all day yesterday. I'm not kidding. The perfect pre-marathon food for carbo loading. I'll post the recipe if anyone wants it. Then this morning I had another piece and some strawberry/banana fruit smoothie. It was just an awesome run. I ended up developing a hot spot on my second toe yesterday when I ran in new shoes with too thick socks. I taped it up for today but it turned into a blood blister anyway, but I don't even care, I hardly noticed it. Here's what I've been doing: http://www.coolrunning.com/cgi-bin/log/display.cgi?u=jaysoffian;s=jaysoffian Next week begins mesocycle 3, race prep in the Pftiz 55/24 plan. 7 weeks to go. I'm getting excited. j.

Does anyone have a good track to use for speed work? I am in the Apex/Cary area and Apex HS has their track fenced in and climbing each Tuesday morning sounds like a bad idea. Where do people hit the track around here? Thanks! K

I'm not really in your area. I use the West Millbrook Middle School track or the one at Buffaloe Road baseball park. The one at Millbrook High School is closest but they lock it up as well. I know people use the one at NC State in the evenings.

Does anyone know somewhere to find runners in the Smithfield or Clayton area? My sister is looking for someone as a running buddy or a running group and she is just beginning the c25k. I haven't found anything except in Raleigh proper online, and am looking for suggestions to give her. Right now I'm telling her about the Hash House Harriers

Does anyone know a good website that lists all of the upcoming races in our area? I looked on this site but most of the races I see are in Charlotte or other areas. Is there another website that might be useful? Thanks!

Hi Jay,I did it on a whim this morning as a build up race for some yet-to-be-decided-upon goal race (whenver the weather finally cools down fer good). I'm glad I did it. Nice event - and I didn't realize there was prize money and thus, there'd be a couple Kenyan's and some local sub-elites! That was exciting to see (for a few minutes, until they were out of sight). I thought the event was well run and I enjoyed the course - probably because I was running it for a workout - I took one look at the course, and with the heat, sun, and direct exposure, I decided that today was a good day for a tempo run I didn't realize you were running until I saw your name in the results. We finished within a couple of minutes of each other so we probably within sight of each other for much of the race. You probably saw me - short, stocky bald buy - blinding oragne singlet - I got an AG award and also won the 1 mile run (shameful, I know, but I was challenged by some teenagers : ). It was cool to see the local boy take the Kenyan. The Kenyan was only 17, though Describe yourself - I must have seen you at some point or another. Did you like the race? ------------------ brook trout my profile

I was unable to do the race as I had baseball responsibilities most of the day. I am planning on doing the Second Empire 5K next weekend though. I've always enjoyed that race. How did you do yesterday?

Jay, your looking good. Ran 4.3 miles yesterday--my longest run since my practice run in May. Most of the pain was in my arm due to the pinched nerve. A little pain in the PF, but doable. Ran pretty slow. Some good biking this week and had a rough ride today in the Cycling Spoken Here 10 AM group ride--we had a sever bike crash near Jordan Lake, and one person had a concussion and another broke his collar bone. Many more had cuts and bruises. The ride back was slow to say the least. I'm enjoying my runs, and I don't care how slow they are. Just having the ability to get out and pound the trails is enjoyable. Bob ------------------ I am dynamic and the mountain is static, but when I run up it I swear it moves. Bob My User Profile

Joel, you did it as a tempo and still finished two minutes faster than me. You're killing me. I went out too fast, first mile was in 6:30. Then I died in mile 3. I was aiming for 35 minutes so I finshed about a minute slower than I wanted to. Here's a pic of me crossing the finish line: http://www.ecrun.org/PatrolStroll/RaceDayPics1/pages/DSC_1029.htm I did the fun run as well with my wife and kids. I remember seeing you and thinking "why is that guy running this thing so fast? What a show-off." My son (3 yrs old) did the fun run in < 11 minutes. I think he's got a future in running. I agree it was a very well done little race. I'm not surprised Devin won ... he seems to win quite a few of the local races. j. [This message has been edited by jaysoffian (edited Sep-25-2006).]

No shame dying off on that course - it was pretty tough - especially with the exposure and the sun - I was hurting too! It wasn't a tempo run (I did hold back at the beginning, but I was dying at the end, too) - I couldn't have done much better that day.I'll never live that mile run down. I wish I hadn't run it, I'm so ashamed... First, the race director was kind of egging folks on (come on, run just one more mile!), so I jumped in. Then that teenager took off like a rocket and the competetive urge just took over. He actually led until the turnaround but then faded, as did the other couple of guys that were actually running the thing hard. I kept hammering because I thought I was still racing the teenager, but he must have stopped at some point, because he finished about 40 seconds behind me, so, yeah, I must've looked like a hot-dog flying into the finish like that Oh well, at least I set my mile PR! I thought it was a nice event. I'll run it next year if it comes back, for sure. There's a slew of races coming up in the area, finally. I'm thinking of running 2nd Empire, too - but I'm not sure I want to race at 2:00pm. Nice to hear that you're running again, Bob. Wow, sounds like an intense bike excursion, though, yeesh. ------------------ brook trout my profile [This message has been edited by brook trout (edited Sep-25-2006).]

Hello Everyone,Planning on moving to the Raleigh area sometime in the next few months. Wondering how it is as a running town. Are there a decent amount of running groups, good trail running, etc?

Yeah, I'd say Raleigh is a pretty fair running town. There's are quite a few trails, greenways, etc. and there's a great State Park (Umstead) with miles and miles of perfect, if hilly, bridle paths. There greenway system is nice, but the links are somewhat short and not completely connected. There are several area running clubs and quite a few races in the spring and fall (not many over the summer, though).Drawbacks are bad air during the summer and lots of traffic, but it's easy to find a place where you'll be able to do lots of running.

Having lived in Miami, Atlanta, and Sunnyvale, I think the air quality and traffic here are fine. Guess it's all relative. :-)Local running clubs are: http://www.carolinagodiva.org/ (Durham) http://www.ncroadrunners.org/ (Raleigh, Cary) Both sites have links to their organized weekly runs. There seem to be quite a lot of informal running groups as well that I see out when I run. There are lots of good places to run, kinda depends on where you end up living. Running outside in the summer isn't a whole lot of fun, but no worse than NY I imagine. Really there are only about two months (July, August) that can get bad. The rest of the year is an absolute pleasure for the most part. Good luck w/your move. BT - I'll try to run 2nd Empire this year. I missed it last year with an achilles injury. A coworker is running the Anna's Angels 10-miler in RTP, I may try that one too. Do you always race in the orange top? I'll look for you. j.

Lately, yeah - that's my "hunting" singlet (so the hunters won't mistake me for a moose when I'm running in Falls Lake). How's the 2nd Empire course? Is it hilly? Also, do you or anyone know of any fast 10K races? I'm trying to hit a specific time target, but I need a relatively flat course to have any hope. Not many truly flat courses in this area, I've come to realize. ------------------ brook trout my profile

If I may be permitted a couple of remarks .... This will only be my second fall running season since I started running, but I did run the 2nd Empire last year. It was my first race of the fall season, but it's also where I set my PR. The course starts at the restaraunt, circles around the capitol, heads west on Hillsborough, circles around the bell tower at NCSU, and finishes where it started. The outbound section on Hillsborough is slightly up-hill as I remember it, but that makes it downhill in the final stretch. I've only run one 10k, but my local half-marathon shared the course of a second one.. The Old Reliable starts downtown, heads past the capitol to some of the residential areas NE of downtown, comes back by the capitol, goes out-and-back on Hillsborough, and finishes downtown. I believe there's a slight uphill at the start as you head north from downtown, then the uphill on Hillsborough described above. (Your biggest problem here might be the crowds since I believe this is one of the oldest races in the area and very popular.) The Inside-Out Sports 10k starts in Cary at the CVS at the corner of 54 and Cary Parkway (near the store). It goes about a block down Cary Parkway, the cuts over to Westin Parkway. It's an out-and-back course, but the out is downhill and the back is uphill. Of the two, I'd probably go with Old Reliable for any PR attempts, but I'd still be leery of the crowds. There's probably also other races out there, I just haven't experienced them. I'll probably be doing 2nd Empire again this year. I finished last year's Grand Prix series they're sponsoring in the top twenty in my age group. Most of that was perserverence, though, and not speed. I was one of only a few that finished at least four of the races. I'll probably be waving at you as you're in the home stretch while I'm still on my way out to the bell tower. (Maybe someday I'll find some speed somewhere - sigh.)

Yea I have to say that Patrol Stroll is one of my favorite events. It was a lot of fun to get to run on that track. I was a little surprised to see devon win it. That Kenyan is a strong runner but so is devon! Anyway I can't wait for the 2nd empire. I am going for under 20 with my kids in that one. Hope to see you all there.

Jason!Hey, was that you?! I thought it might be as I went by - I was the guy said, "incredible" - but you might have heard many similar remarks. That was remarkable, chasing a guy in a double stroller for three miles! You are one fast stroller racing guy! I wonder what you can do sans stroller. Those hills must have been murder with TWO kids. Great job. Thanks for the good info rlemert. I was thinking of doing that grand prix, too. I'll be looking at the weather forecasts for this weekend. If the temps and humidity are reasonable, maybe I'll jump in to the 2nd Empire. Jason, are you going for the sub-20 with the stroller? ------------------ brook trout my profile [This message has been edited by brook trout (edited Sep-26-2006).]

Yes that was me with the double jogger. You had a pretty strong run as well. Congrats on the weight loss. That is way more impressive than running with a stroller! Yes, those hills just crushed me at the end. It sure was a fun event though. Yes I am actually going to try for a sub twenty for the 5k with the double stroller at the 2nd empire. On a flat course the stroller does not subtract much from my time. You can see how much it affects my time when there are hills or actually the worst is a strong wind like the race I did with them on Sunday. I have been consistently in the low 19’s with them on a Cary Parkway 5K course that I train on. If they allow me to get a good start then I can do a 5:40 first mile and probably stay close to a 6:30 average for the other two miles. The 5K is what I have trained for so I am much better suited to that distance. I really fade fast after about 3.5 miles. There are several other guys in Raleigh that actually run sub 40 minute 10ks with single and double baby joggers. Those guys are nuts! I finished third in the 25-29 age group for the 2nd empire classic series last year. I did all five races with my son in the single jogger and still managed to place. That is not too shabby. However, this year I am in the more competitive age group than last year(Mainly because the top 5 runners in the series were in the 25-29 age group so they don’t get included in the age group categories). I hope to place third but I would probably have to go sub 19 to do that. 19 is a whole different ball game from 20. My best time ever is a 20:25 on a hilly course with my son only. I had a terrible start and I had to wait almost 30 seconds before I could get into my stride. I really think I can get it on Sunday. Good luck to everyone and I hope to pass you there. quote: Originally posted by brook trout: Jason!Hey, was that you?! Yea those towels were pretty cool. Literally! I wonder how many people will run? There were 494 runners last year. I bet it will be closer to 1000 this year. I wonder if Devin will win again? I have only seen one other runner in the area that would beat him. There was a guy in the race results below that shattered the course record. A 14:39 for a 5K on a sort of hilly course is pretty crazy! I would love to see him go head to head with Devin. It should be a good race.http://www.active.com/results/viewresults_multiple.cfm?filename=1320393_20060606062601.txt quote: Originally posted by swatkins: Forecast calls for a high of 80 on Sunday.
