The Raleigh marathon was cancelled because a title sponsor cannot be found. I think it is a matter of time before this gets started again. See the link below:http://www.raleighmarathon.com/ There is a marathon in Umstead Park March 5th, 2005. I plan on signing up. See the link below: http://www.carolinagodiva.org/umsteadmarathon/ ------------------ Let's race. Is there a good website for finding races in the raleigh area? I have to visit a bunch of different ones to find out about the races. . . it looks like there's not much going on this winter I just ran my first 5K this weekend (second empire) and was looking forward to doing another one, or a 10K.

I use these 3 websites, which contain all the races... www.active.com Put in your zip, and choose running www.runnc.com www.ncroadrunners.org Races slow down due to the holidays (not too many of us with family obligations will run a race on weekends this time of year). I know the Apex Turkey Trot is coming up 11/20...you could run that one. It's in the park. It is not the best organized, but the course is measured well. After that, nothing until Run In The New Year (RITNY) in January.

I also forgot the most obvious place to find upcoming races...The News & Observer posts upcoming races in the back of the sports section weekly. I noticed the postings in the back of yesterday's sports section, so I guess it must come regularly in Tuesday's paper. Performances at races are also posted.

www.runraleigh.com has some listed as well as th Carolina Godiva website (sorry I don't have a link). Inside Out Sports also has a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. You're right. The next big race is probabaly the Run for the Roses. emlennon, how did you like the Second Empire race? I thought it was really well-organized, I had my results about 5 min after I finished.

There's the Jingle-Bell Half Marathon in Winston-Salem coming up soon, too. I'm not sure if it is on the Salem Lake 30k course or not but I think I'm running it. BTW, I'm in Durham and run mostly with godiva and the duke roadrunners.

Second empire was my first race so I don't really have much to compare it to! But I thought it was great-- it seemed very well- organized to me, I was impressed at the amount of traffic control and everything! No long lines for chip pickup (at least when I went) and lots and lots of food! The weather was also very nice. And, as you said, the results were out pretty quickly although I didn't end up seeing mine (I knew my time though).I won't be here on thanksgiving unfortunately. Thanks for the advice!

I would like to do some hill training in Umstead. I have a map of the trails, but I don't know where the hills are? Anyone know of a web site that shows the topo of Umstead or could you let me know the hillest trails in Umstead. Thanks.------------------ Let's race.

There isn't anywhere in Umstead that ISN'T hills. The main bridle trail is very hilly but has a nice soft, smooth surface to run on. The majority of it is shaded as well which is nice.

The new trail in the Eastern part of Umstead is very hilly. I think it's name is Turkey Creek Trail, though don't hold me to it. When I run Turkey Creek I often pass the moutain bikers struggling up the hills. There are some good long hills on the main bridal trails too. On the part near Reedy Creek Lake there is the hill we call the Corkscrew. Sycamore trail also has some decent climbing if single track is your cup of tea.

Hello! I'm new(ish) to Raleigh, I moved here in July. I live on Lake Lynn so I've been running here mostly, and also at Umstead. Does anyone know where I could get a good map of the greenways? I found one online, but it's not so helpful for someone that doesn't know the area well. I'd love to know distances too. I'm currently training for a 1/2 marathon, so I'm looking for places to do runs that are 6 miles and over. I know Shelley Lake has other paths that connect to it...but I've never been there. Anyone do long runs near Shelley Lake (or Lake Lynn) on weekends? My running parter and I are planning for 8 miles next weekend...we run about a 10 minute/mile pace for long runs. Thanks!!

gamblejl, I do my long runs at Shelley Lake on Sunday mornings. The negative is that it is a 2-mile loop around the lake, but the good thing is that there are restrooms and plenty of people. If you need a running partner, I am usually out there on Sunday mornings(9 min/miles). Actually, this Sunday I am running 18 miles(training for the Disney marathon in January). Good luck with you training. Rob

I see we are up to 69 entrants so far for the Umstead Park Marathon. The maximum entrees is 170, so hope to see everyone there. Marathon training has been tough on these cold days. I can run during lunch, but with runs that extend beyond 6 miles I usually get up early and run on the American Tobacco Trail near my house. Well the coldest time is when I get up, so it makes it tough to get out there and get those training runs done, but so far so good. Sunday is a 17 miler and this will be tough with the low at 15 degrees. I am thinking of switching to Saturday morning with a low of 20 degrees--still tough.------------------ I'm a running fool, but not a foolish runner.

Are you running the Umstead Marathon? I just signed up for it and I was trying to find out if anyone could tell me about last year's course or they had heard anything about this year's course. Any info?

I have asked for a description of the course from the race director. If I here back, I will post his reply. Generally you will have to run every bridle trail to get the necessary marathon distance. Here is a link that shows the names of the bridle trails and the distance: http://umsteadcoalition.org/trailmap.htm. If you have not run in Umstead, try running some of the bridle trails to get the feel of the hills and the footing. I can say this is one tough marathon!Note that the Umstead Park marathon is full (170 maximum allowed). I hope to see many of you out there. I have run the bridle trails in Umstead for the first time, and let me tell you, that is a tough course! I can't tell which is worse going up hill or taking the pounding going down!

Has anyone found a store that does good fitting for running shoes? (That watch you run etc?)I've been meaning to venture out to Umstead park for some hill workouts! I want to stay on the crushed gravel trails (to stay away from rocks and roots because I tend to trip a lot!) Which entrance is the best to go in to find these trails? I know there is an entrance up on Glenwood, but I'm not familiar with any of the other entrances. Thanks! Liz

The main entrance is off I-40 at the Harrison Ave exit. Coming from Raleigh, turn right at the end of the exit ramp and there you are. There are bathrooms and a drinking fountain at this entrance. You can take either the Company Mill or Loblolly (dirt) trails to the bridle trails. There is also an entrance on Ebenezer Church Rd just off 70 Highway. The Gralyn trail is crushed gravel and will take you right to the main drag of the bridle trails. There have been articles in the paper recently about "No Parking" signs going up around there.I go to Inside-Out Sports at the Ridgewood shopping center for shoes. They are very laid back but attentive and have a treadmill so you can try out the shoes. [This message has been edited by swatkins (edited Jan-27-2005).]

I run in Umstead fairly regularly, so I know what to expect - although I am not looking forward to running those hills for a full marathon. I was told that the course will be all on the bridle trails except for 4 miles of single track. I am hoping the single track portion comes early in the race. I have a tendency to shuffle my feet when I get tired and this might cause a problem or two on the single track. Any idea what kind of pace you will be shooting for? I am trying to work out my pace. I have a good idea of what my pace should be for road marathons, but I have no idea what the Umstead mountains will do to me after 20 miles.

I ran 21 miles two weeks ago in Umstead and came away with an average 11 minute/mile pace--slower than ususal, but I was running just under what I consider marathon pace. I am not used to the hills. When I ran the Richmond marathon I averaged just over a 10 minute/mile and that was with a cold. I gained some weight and the cold had me performing poorly for weeks. I now feel better, and I am working on the weight. If I can get my weight back to what I was at Richmond, I am shooting for a 10 minute/mile pace. I'll adjust the pace based on my fittness the day of the race. The detailed course description is suppose to be put on http://www.carolinagodiva.org/umsteadmarathon/, but it is not there yet. Running the non-bridle trail part will be tough if it is at the end of the race! ------------------ I'm a running fool, but not a foolish runner. oops! I meant to post here and accidentally posted in the general neighborhood. Anyway, I am a stay-at-home mom looking for other moms to run with a few times a week. If anyone is interested or knows of a group they could put me in touch with I would greatly appreciate it! Jen

It sounds like you and I are in similar situations. I also ran Richmond and do not think I am ready for the Umstead hills. I am thinking about shooting for a pace of 15 to 30 seconds/mile slower than Richmond and then seeing how I feel at the 1/2 way point or at mile 20.
