They've changed the routes for the August series slightly from last year. Here's this year's routes: http://www.ncroadrunners.org/images/augustseries-06.jpg Last year all the runs went out Graylyn all the way to Ready Creek and then ran back to N Trukey Creek and down/up N Turkey Creek. The 5k actually didn't go down N Turkey Creek at all. I kinda liked that since Graylyn is a bit more forgiving than N Turkey Creek. It's also wider which gave the runners plenty of room to separate before heading down N Turkey Creek. Oh well, this year it's all N Turkey Creek all the time. Bring it on! :-) j.

Yowza - can you imagine what the 5K time for that course would be? I'm not sure I could break 24 on that. Yikes.BTW - am I missing something, or is there a real lack of races in the triangle area? Maybe I'm spoiled or something (and I know southerners hate it when us transplants say things like this), but in Southern NH, I could choose between half a dozen races each and every weekend almost year round (Jan and Mar were slow) - all within 30 minutes drive. Down here, I have to wait until OCT. for a 'normal' 5K race that I don't have to drive two hours to get to... Am I missing something? Are there any weekly race series or anything that I'm not aware of? I miss racing - don't want to wait until OCT! ------------------ brook trout my profile

Brooktrout,I moved here from Knoxville, TN. We had races there almost every weekend, anything from 5Ks to half marathons on a regular basis. I had no idea how spoiled I was when I lived there. The races were always well organized, reasonably priced (sometimes only $7 if you were a track club member and skipped the t-shirt), and very fun! I can't say enough good things about the track club and track club members there! I miss it! (There were a lot of non race, but group runs too!) I guess there are less races in the summer here because of the heat. The few races that I have run here have been excellent though! I am looking forward to some fall races too!

Moving here from the SF bay area where you could find a race almost every weekend, yeah, major lack of races. Even in the Spring/Fall there aren't that many races here. :-(j.

Heh,We should open a timing company, then In MA, there is a timing company that hosts a weekly race series for each season. The charge is minimal (was like 7 bucks), the course was great, and it was professionally run. Anyway, despite the fact that the race was on a Tuesday night, the participants were usually 150-200 runners (the times I went). X $7 bucks, that's a tidy bit of cash for a night's work (there were a couple of employees and volunteers). The company also timed other races, too, of course. Start a weekly race series in the Triangle, with the dearth of races (and thus, presumed pent-up demand), and you might have a gold mine!

What running camp?j. I just got back from running camp at ZAPFitness in Blowing Rock ( www.zapfitness.com ) It was out of this world and I more than got my money's worth. I was told I should shoot for a 3:45 time, that I am capable of more than I have been pushing myself to do--and I ran at a faster pace than I normally do the entire week at much higher mileage and was never even sore--worst I got was a blister under a toenail. There were runs scheduled every day, doubles some days. Most were at Moses Cone National Park and all the runs were on trails. They had an on-site chef and massage therapist. We soaked in a cold creek after every day's run but there was a hot tub as well. There were classes every day on training, nutrition, cross-training, race-day strategy, etc. We were videotaped on the track then our form was critiqued. We also had the opportunity to meet with a coach to draw up an an individualized training program so I have a different approach to try this year. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is interested in becoming excited about running again. Bit, how did you do on Grandfather? Very few races in the summer due to the heat, but one race I like is Running of the Bulls down in Fayetteville--10k race. See their web site: http://www.cincodemayo10k.org/Toros.htm If you want a tough summer race, travel one hour south of here July 29th. It is also great to see the many military in the race. For more races see: http://www.runnc.com/exec/young/schedule.cfm?publicationID=283 and http://roguerunners.org/AreaRaces.htm Still far from running due to PF injury. Probably 3-6 months. Biking and Stairmaster is what I'm left with. Started going out on group bike rides and really like it. Going to make that a permanent cross training event. Bob,I posted a marathon report. It's probably one page back by now! We have been a chatty group lately, which I think is great! I really hope your PF heals well. I am glad you are enjoying the biking. Maybe you will end up a triathlete after all this! (Several people from my old track club always highly recomended biking. The picked it up during injuries and didn't stop because they thought it made them better runners! Biking is a tough workout!)

Bit sorry for missing your great report. I went back and found it--super job. Wish I was there. Maybe next year or the year after. When I think I'm ready to run, I will start using the elliptical machine to check that I'm really ready. Maybe my next race will be the Cary 10k in April--the same one that made running not possible. So not sure I'll be ready for a marathon like Grandfather by next year, but I have it as my goal to accomplish. I am struggling to find a place to run. I track my miles using a GPS watch and Tabacco Trail kills the signal and Upstead will probably be the same but I have not run it yet.I am training for the Marine Corp in Oct and am running between 12-20 miles on my long runs the next couple of months and live in Apex. Any other locatins people would recommend? Thanks!

Bob,I really have to commend you on being committed to your recovery. It's hard to take the time off and come back slowly, but it sounds like you are doing things the right way. I know a lady who has had terrible PF for YEARS. She refuses to take any time off to let it heal. It just doesn't make sense! GMM will be waiting for you. Normally, the GMM course goes on the Blus Ridge Parkway, which is supposed to be very scenic, but we missed that part this year due to construction. Maybe by the time you are ready to run GMM, it will be back to the old course! Kintoro, I used to live very close to Umstead and ran there every week. I rarely had problems using my GPS there or on Black Creek greenway. I don't know of any other spots besides Black Creek, Umstead, or ATT. There are some group long runs listed on the NC roadrunners website, but I haven't attended those. Good luck at MCM!

Kintoro,Forgive me if this is stating the obvious, but the tobacco trail has mile markers, so you shouldn't need your GPS (marked every half mile, actually). The trails in Umstead are well documented. The lengths of most of the segments are well known. Check out this map. All the sections are marked with mileage. It's sometimes hard to read, but it's better than nothing. Last, if you're really dependent on your GPS and you have the extra dough, you might want to invest in one of the new Garmin models (205, 305). I had similar problems as you with my 201, but I have yet to lose the signal even one time with the 205 - and I'm running some heavily canopied trails - Company Mill (Umstead), Falls Lake Trail (Falls Lake), etc. The reception is far superior to the 201, in my experience. ------------------ brook trout my profile

Am I crazy but I count steps. 1350 equals 1 mile.I am new to the area live down here in Fuquay, kinda head out the door and explore get lost and run many more miles than planned. Ended up someplace in Harnett county yesterday. Called the wife for a pick up 14 miles from home. It really is all good. Anyone else need a running partner? I am 50 been running for 40 years, have run everything from the 400 meter to marathons. Run about 60 to 80 mpw. from 7:15 per mile to 9 min miles depending on the distance and the weather. Probably race more this summer and fall. I teach PE and coach up in new jersey. I must return labor day to NJ and finish the year teaching then at Xmas I take an early retirement and can then be here at the new house permanent. I look to coach a high school track program maybe teach full time or sub.

Brooktrout:Where/when do you run? You and I have a few things in common - same profession, about the same age, kids about the same age. Might be fun to run together although you're a little faster than I am right now. I've been doing my long run on the ATT on Sunday's starting around 7-8 AM. j.

Bit, I wish to say that I was committed to my recovery, but truth be told: I had PF problems for eight months before I stopped running. And I only stopped running because the pain was so intense. Looking back, if I had stopped for a month when the pain was mild and done the stretches and used the soft splints I would have been able to do all my races and continue to run. Now I feel committed to not making that mistake again and ensuring I'm healed before starting up again.Well I have my Orthotics and they feel good. My PF is feeling better than ever. I have decided to give it another month of rest before I ease back into running. I really enjoy the group rides on my new road bike. Don't care for the gym, so I'm motivated to get back into running. ------------------ I am dynamic and the mountain is static, but when I run up it I swear it moves. Bob My User Profile

I was surprised to see the posts about not enough races in the area. Admittedly it slows down over the heat of summer, but in the spring and fall, you can race almost every weekend if you want to. I ran 13 local races just from January to April -- had to miss a few -- and it looks like there's another 13 just in September and October. This is a *great* area for local races. I should have checked previously to see if anyone else here was going to Peachtree this year. It was my first year back since my father and I used to run it together when I was in college. (Back then, it was only 25k runners. :-) Amazing to see everything required to put on a 55,000-runner 10k. Sorry that I won't be able to work in the Running of the Bulls on Saturday. :-( Other than the NCRC Umstead runs, I think the next big one for me will the RNR half in Va. Beach. And if everything works out, Marine Corps in October will be my first marathon. Keep running! Brad "They will run and not get weary" - Isaiah 40:31

KINTORO, I'm also in Fuquay and have a hard time finding places to run. But you run a heck of a lot further than I'm running. I'm working on increasing distance, coming off of an injury and trying not to get run over while jogging with the stroller. Lake Johnson looks inviting (at least the paved part of the Greenway). There's a trail in Cary (Symphony Lake at Regency Park), but you'd probably have to run it 10 times to get in your usual mileage (it's 1.2 around). I'm really trying for the Old Reliable this year, but will run the 5K if I'm not exactly ready for the 10K. I really think I'm in over my head in this thread. You all seem to be, literally, miles ahead of me in running. But I'm new and motivated, so keep up the inspiration! [This message has been edited by jjjmcghee (edited Jul-31-2006).]

Umstead Turnaround Points? Thanks for the suggestions about running in Umstead. I'm getting to be more and more a fan of the park. I ran Bob's 7.25-mile loop Saturday morning and liked it. I see that the Umstead Marathon and 100-Miler routes use turnaround points past the airport overlook and near the Graylyn Drive entrance. Are these turnaround points permanently marked, or only during their respective events? If I'm going to tackle the 12.5-mile loop I want to make sure I'm going the right distance and not turning around too early (or too late :-). Thanks in advance, Brad "they will run and not get weary" - Isaiah 40:31

The end of October I'm going to a workshop for a week in Chapel Hill. I'll be staying at the Marriot Courtyard at Chapel Hill. Can anyone tell me if there are any good places to run near there? Thanks

Umstead has no permanent milage markers, so any signs up for turnarounds for a race are temporary. There is the web site that gives the milage for trails at each intersection, so I turn around at intersections to run close to my needed miles on a long run. Might try a thirty minute run tomorrow. PF is feeling better, so another test run is up. Really enjoying the group rides on the bike as a fun break from running. Anyone know if the mile markers at Shelley Lake are accurate? I was running tempo loops out there today, and by the markers, I was doing about 6:45 pace, but by my garmin, I was doing about 7:05 pace. Not sure which to believe.------------------ brook trout my profile

You will be staying right on a paved running path that leads to some nice quiet neighborhoods. If you head away from the hotel towards the left as you face hwy 54 and run along it until you reach the tunnel and go through the tunnel, you will find yourself in a great (and safe) place to run around and explore. It's hilly, but the town isn't called chapel hill for nothing. If you check out the usatf website and search for running routes with the word meadowmont in them, you will find several options, since that is the area you will be in.
Brooktrout- I have run at shelly lake and my times are always more impressive there than anywhere else. I think it is marked short. Trust the garmin.
