Jay congrats for running an excellent race. I really see you getting below 3:30 in the OTC. Thanks for the report--I liked it.

Bit, I hope to be back in Umstead soon. Umstead is a thirty minute drive for me, but I think it is worth it for the hill training necessary for Grandfather. I ran five miles on the ATT and did OK, but I can see my PF is not yet healed properly, so back to the gym. I will try another Saturday run on the ATT. If all goes well, I plan on getting back to Umstead May 20th or May 28th. Not much time to train for Grandfather, but now my goal is to finish in the five hour time limit not break any time goal (was shooting for 4:20).

I also have never had a pasta dinner before he race, but I look at the dinner as a chance to talk to the other runners. I actually have to be careful not to eat too much before an early morning race. I do better eating small meals through the day.

Anyone know what time the falls dam closes? It says 5:30 PM all cars must be out, does that mean I can't run there after 5:30 PM? Anyone run there? Any trail recommendations?

Thanks y'all!

Hookiegirl,

What trails specifically are you talking about at Falls Lake? I used to run wakefield plantation too until i moved, excellent trail alongside the electrical cables.

I did a trial run yesterday of 12.7 miles and I think I may not be able to run Grandfather. The Plantar Fasciitis pain increased with every mile. On top of that I have lost some fitness since the run was difficult at a slow pace. After three weeks of little to no running my progress is not enough to resume training. Without starting training now, there is no way I'll be ready.

Since I paid for the marathon, I will try to use the gym to keep fit and hope that things change and maybe run the marathon--but I doubt I will even try. It is not the uphill that worries me, but the pounding the PF takes on the downhill.

Bob,

Thanks for posting an update. I was thinking of you when I was running in Umstead yesterday.

I am very sorry to hear that you may not be able to run the marathon. However, sometimes it's better to skip the race in favor of letting an injury heal instead of running anyway and making the injury worse. There will be more marathons after the PF gets better!

Take care of yourself and keep us updated on how things are going! I hope you heal quickly!

Bit, if I don't run, please tell me all about the Grandfather Marathon experience.

I have one last plan to still run GMM. Train at the gym concentrating on the Stairmaster and bike since neither hurt m PF. I did find hour and over on the elliptical does hurt the PF a little, so I will back off on the elliptical. Put in some really long hours on these two machines for a month with no running at all. Do some testing running June 14 and if the PF has healed enough, run the race to finish which is five hours if you want to finish on the track and five and half hours if you just want to finish. If the PF is still too painful to run after a month off of not running, then I can say we will try another day.

I miss doing the loop at Umstead. Boy Umstead can really get you in shape! One thing I don't miss is the deer flies which will be coming out soon.

Bob,

I'm sorry to hear that you're sidelined by injury, I know how frustrating that can be.

As far as keeping up your fitness, have you tried water running? I believe it is a lot more specific than biking or elliptical so it should keep you in better shape for when your PF heals.

I definitely will tell you about GMM if you don't run! But I am still hoping you will be there.

You are right about Umstead being able to get you in shape! After not running there for over a month, my legs were seriously complaining after 17 miles!

Ugh! I am not looking forward to the return of those huge flies.

It sounds like you have a good recovery plan, but I second Jay's suggestion of water running. I know several people who have kept in fantastic running shape during times of injury by doing long water runs!

Where can one do these water runs. Is it a matter of buying the equipment and going any pool?

Bob

P.S. I'm in Munich Germany now, and I found a great running/bike trail. Our hotel rents bikes and tomorrow I plan on a two hour bike ride. PF still screaming, so no running.

You just need a flotation vest or belt and a pool deep enough. Some more info here:

These folks make flotation equipment tailored to the purpose:

SAMFROMRALEIGH,

I just moved into the area from NH. I've got a house under contract in Falls River - right across the street from Falls Lake. I've test drove the running trail a few times and I like it - nice, twisty, undulating single track...

I've run there in the morning, before 7:00am. The gates are locked at that time, so I just park in the little parking area off of Falls of Nuese road that's just past the entrance to Bedford/Falls River.

No one has told me to leave, so I figure it's ok.

Anyone who runs a sub-20 5k I shouldn't be told to leave!

Nice seeing you on the trail Jay, sorry I didn't have time to talk with a you, but glad to see your training for your marathon on the American Tobacco Trail. As you saw, I'm biking on off days. I go to the gym on strong days. I have banned myself from the elliptical machine since the elliptical makes the PF start to hurt. Stairmaster is my new training machine. Feeling better each day. May try a test run this coming weekend.

American Tobacco Trail update:
Wake is extending their trail to the Chatham county border, but will not open it until Chatham county has their trail built to a parking lot that Wake users can access (trails must end at a parking lot). Chatham is in process of building the trail and has two bridges to complete--each almost 200 feet long. Durham also has a section to complete to connect to Chatham with a very expensive bridge to be done.
http://www.triangletrails.org/ATTstatus-3.xls
http://www.triangletrails.org/ATT.HTM

When all this will be done--I don't know, but when I find out I will let you know. I do know that Chatham is working on the trail and bridges.

Bob,

I ran on the Wake section of the ATT this morning - good stuff - level dirt and no traffic!

Where's the best place to find out about upcoming NC races? The Northeastern-centric cool running doesn't seem to have much for NC.

For races in the area I look at these web sites:
http://www.runnc.com/
http://roguerunners.org/AreaRaces.htm

Not sure I'll be running Grandfather, but if I do I'll probally drop out of racing until next spring to make sure my PF is fully healed.

I'm running that. Planning for a 3:30 race, maybe 3:15 depending upon how much I improve during training. Should be a good course if it isn't too windy.

The way I look at it, the Wright Brothers picked Kitty Hawk for a reason

It looks like there was a short race series in Umstead last August (5K-12K). Anyone know if the series is going to be held again this year?

Brook trout,

The august race series is on the ncroadrunners.org race calendar.

I ran one of them last year. They are very informal, just running and hanging out. But they are a lot of fun. I hope to do them all this year.

Hi all. New to the area and enjoying your posts. I've been running mainly around the Apex Community Lake since it's near my home. Also enjoy running on the Cary Parkway. When I first moved here I really enjoyed the Lake Johnson trail.

zpc, enjoyed reading about your 5k race. Good blog. I hope to running again soon, but at least I get out to bike on the American Tobacco Trail. I have been working hard on the Stairmaster to try to keep in shape in case I run Grandfather July 8th.

Thanks Bob. I hope your training goes well. Don't think I'm ready to run grandfather yet. I hope to next summer.
