The problem is that you are going up against the Cary Road race. Most people will be running in that race. Sorry. Your event did look like it would be fun.

COOLDAD - thank you for your response. I am surprised that people can up and move with no job in place. I'm tempted, but too practical. But good to know that the job market is strong.I have checked out the Charlotte area and now want to take some time to check out the Raleigh area. As a single gal approaching 30, I want to be sure I'm not in the middle of suburbia! So much to consider. It's quite overwhelming but I don't think I can afford to live in these parts (just outside NY City) for much longer. Thanks again for your response!!

Anyone see the blurb on WRAL about the brushfire at Umstead yesterday?

Yes, I heard it on the radio. Thanks to a quick response only 3.5 acres burned before they got control. This drought is getting worrisome.14.5 miles at Umstead today. Bob

Good news: I'm down to 159 pounds, from 184 in December. (And from 280 in October 03.) I think I have some more to lose, though. Maybe 10-15 pounds. We'll see.Bad news: I've pulled or irritated the tendon that attaches right under my left patella. I've been walking the last few days and it seems to be healing very slowly. I just feel like what little bit of running fitness I had is slipping away and I'll have to start from scratch yet again. I finally felt "thin" enough to buy my first singlet. Figures it gets delivered the day after I pull my knee. I've been wearing it while walking but it feels really silly. I'm just hoping to even out my messed up tan lines right now!

Hey Bob,(I can't log on with the name Bit, so now I am bitbit.) I think I passed you today during the race, but I wasn't sure. I started way too far back and was trying to weave around people! I got there just a minute (literally) before the race started and did not even have time to get my chip! But I had a great time. The course seemed easy and the weather was wonderful. I didn't stay long after the race since I knew I wouldn't be in the results. But my watch/gun time was around 43:30. I am so glad you had a good race (and PRed) despite some health problems. All those runs in Umstead have paid off! Good Job!

Bob,Good seeing you as well. Sorry if I was a bit distracted during our conversations. A lot going on these days. I'm building base right now so I wasn't looking for a super fast run but I still wanted to PR. I predicted I'd be able to run about a 46:30 and had I run a smarter race (too fast out of the gate as always), I think I would have. As it is I turned in 46:59 which I'm happy with. My splits: 7:20 6:51 (downhill) 8:06 8:00 7:13 (downhill, 2nd loop) 9:30 (1.2 miles) My next race is the 500 Festival Mini Marathon. Good luck with your continued training for GFM. I'm still in awe of anyone who'd willingly run up a mountain. :-)

Great job Jay. We ran the same pace the last two miles, but your first two miles were much faster than mine. I worked pretty hard to not kill myself the first mile, so I am beginning to learn my lessen.Hope to see you soon. Bob

Ok so. I am new to the wake forest area and also a college student so I'm only home a few months of the year. I was wondering if anyone else also runs in this area and any suggestions of safe places to run.(I'm a female and don't know anyone else in the area to run with)Thanks!

Sorry, not from Wake Forest, but I think Umstead Park is safe. I see many women running alone in the park. But this would be a drive for you to get to.Bob ------------------ I am dynamic and the mountain is static, but when I run up it a swear it moves. Bob My User Profile

I'm near Wake Forest, but not in......... I've been running around my neighborhood in Wakefield Plantation - great hills, but have heard from my neighbors that Falls Lake has some great trails to run. I'm a newbie runner or I'd suggest we meet up (girl here as well) and not ready to feel like I slow anyone down. If you hear of some great running areas let me know - I'm always interested in hearing where the good running sites are!

Bitbit, any more races this spring/summer?My plantar fasciitis is hurting, so I took myself off running for 1-3 weeks. I have not run this week, and I have started up biking and elliptical machine work at the gym Beyond Fitness at Waverly Place. I am working myself up to three-four hour work outs on the elliptical machine weekly and two-three hour workouts on my bike at Umstead weekly. Everything else is about an hour workout each day alternating between the bike and the elliptical machine. Hopefully this will keep me in shape so I won't lose much from not running. I have Grandfather Marathon July 8th to contend with. I find the gym boring compared to running the trails. I hope to get used to it. If you see me at the gym please say hello. Hey Bob,I'm so sorry to hear you are out of running. Hopefully with a couple weeks off, you will feel good enough to run. Even though the gym can be mind numbing at times, it will really help you keep your cardio fitness. Umstead is just as tough on a bike as it is on foot! I haven't been out to Umstead as much as I would like lately. (I don't belong to a gym, otherwise I would say hello!) I registered for GMM on Saturday and then went out and did my first long run since Umstead. I did 17 miles and felt pretty good. I hope to run a couple shorter races before GMM, but I am not sure what. And there is a half in Hickory in June that sounds fun. I usually wait until like a week before a race to decide if ai want to run it. Anyway, I really hope you recover quickly and don't get too bored at the gym!

Bob, I have used Chad Lal at Athletic Edge in Cary at 673-0663. He helped me with some hamstring problems I was having and I bet he could help - some at least - for your PF. Are you doing the stretches were you pull the toes back and rub the arch with your thumb? Have you looked into getting the weird sock you wear overnight? I have heard that works pretty well, so long as your spouse does not laugh too hard at you. Good luck.

Bit, super that your taking the Grandfather Mountain challenge. Did you sign up for the pasta dinner the night before? I plan on being there. Hey, I think you'll find Umstead to be a great training ground to prepare.PF injury getting better? Hard to tell, but I am working very hard on the elliptical machine and biking at Umstead to stay in reasonable shape to get back into marathon training. I did a little treadmill running and the PF flamed up. I plan on trying a 3-5 mile run tomorrow on the American Tobacco Trail and see how the PF reacts. Gottagetfaster, I wear the Stassburg sock (see www.thesock.com), stretch the foot, massage the heel were the pain is. I have neglected to use ice, so I will try to include that when I can. The best and most difficult solution: rest. Bob ------------------ I am dynamic and the mountain is static, but when I run up it a swear it moves. Bob My User Profile

Hey Bob,I did not sign up for the pasta dinner. I actually haven't had pasta the night before a marathon! It sounds crazy, I know. Maybe I will try it before a long run sometime. I used to live close enough to run to Umstead, but I moved and now I have to drive. So I just don't get out there as often as before. I hope the run goes well tomorrow. I hear ATT is nice and flat so hopefully it won't aggrivate the PF too much.

Just ran the 500 Festival Mini Marathon, a.k.a the Indianapolis Half Marathon over the weekend. It was a well-run event (and I emphasize "event") and I had a good race. Here' s my cheesy race report: http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum8/HTML/008562.shtmlTo anyone that likes to run in big races, I recommend this one. Just make sure you get yourself placed in the correct corral. j.
